This project develops a novel procedure for proxying economic activity with daytime satellite imagery across time periods and spatial units, for which reliable data on economic activity are otherwise not available. In developing this unique proxy, we apply machine-learning techniques to a historical time series of daytime satellite imagery from the Landsat program dating back to 1984. Compared to satellite data on night light intensity, another common economic proxy, our proxy more precisely predicts economic activity at smaller regional levels and over longer time horizons. Our procedure is generalizable to any region in the world, and it has great potential for analyzing historical economic developments, evaluating local policy reforms, and controlling for economic activity at highly disaggregated regional levels in econometric applications. Therefore, we produce our proxy for any region in the world and publish the data as georeferend TIF files in this repository. In our paper, we demonstrate our measure’s usefulness for the example of Germany, where East German data on economic activity are unavailable for detailed regional levels and historical time series

Viha ja julkisuus: yliopistojen tutkimus- ja opetushenkilökunnan kysely 2020
Aineistossa kartoitetaan yliopistojen tutkimus- ja opetushenkilökunnan kokemuksia vihasta ja häirinnästä. Lisäksi selvitetään vastaajien sosiaalisen median käyttöä sekä yleistä hyvinvointia. Aluksi kyselyssä kartoitettiin vastaajien sosiaalisen median käyttötottumuksia. Vastaajilta kysyttiin esimerkiksi, kuinka usein he julkaisevat sisältöä eri sosiaalisen median palveluihin. Vastaajilta kysyttiin myös tunsivatko he tekijän ja ilmoittivatko he tapahtuneesta jollekin taholle. Kyselyssä on käytetty seuraavia mittareita: Big Five Inventory BFI-S (Persoonallisuus), Eyesenck Impulsivity Scale EIS (Impulsiivisuus), General Health Questionnaire GHQ-12 (Psyykkinen kuormittuneisuus), Identity Bubble Reinforcement Scale IBRS (Samanmielisyys ja identiteettikuplat), Single-Item Self-Esteem SISE (Itsetunto), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory STAI-6 (Ahdistuneisuus), Trauma Screening Questionnaire TSQ (Psyykkisten traumaoireiden seulonta) ja Utrecht Work Engagement Scale UWES (Työn imu 9 -mittari).
LAKTAT - Laypeople as actors in all-day schooling. Quantitative assessment at the socio-spatial level (Sub-study A)
Over the past two decades, the staff at German all-day schools has changed significantly in terms of both quantity and quality (Tillmann, 2020). The school environment has now become a multi-professional arena (Rother et al., 2021). Not only teachers are involved, but also so-called additional educational staff (wptP), which is made up of individuals with sometimes very different educational qualifications and expertise. Individuals without formally recognized educational training, known as educational laypersons (Steiner, 2013), also play a role. To date, the professional discourse has hardly dealt with educational laypersons. In addition, there has been little research activity with regard to this specific status group. Research on the overall situation of educational laypersons, their integration into the school organization, and their educational orientations is still sorely lacking. The overarching aim of the LAKTAT research project is to analyze the relevance of lay educators at all-day schools, their organizational integration, and their pedagogical orientations, and to formulate the initial elements of an exploratory theory on the “layification of all-day schools.” Not only because of the shortage of skilled workers, the question of qualification in this area must be raised, reflected upon empirically, and further addressed in educational and professional policy discourses. The research project was carried out using a mixed-methods design, which combines both quantitative and qualitative research methods and has been described in detail by Danner et al. (2023). There are three sub-studies focusing on the levels of system (A), organization (B), and actors (C). The data was collected in three different local authorities in Lower Saxony (two districts, one large city). Substudy A focused on taking stock of the teaching staff at all-day schools. An online questionnaire was used to collect current and comprehensive data on the situation of teaching staff. The aim was, on the one hand, to create a systematic overview of professionalization in the all-day school sector. On the other hand, this preliminary survey also had a practical research function, in that the results of the latent profile analysis of the quantitative data provided a basis for the informed selection of qualitative case studies in sub-studies B and C. The qualitative transcribed interviews and network maps from sub-studies B and C are available from the FDZ Bildung at the DIPF – Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education, but cannot be linked to the quantitative data on an individual level. Access to the qualitative data is granted upon request to the FDZ Bildung (see also further information).
Citizens' Opinion: Finnish Views on Activities of Citizens' Jury on Climate Actions 2021
Aineisto liittyy Ympäristöministeriön rahoittamaan ilmastotoimia puntaroivaan kansalaisraatiin, joka kokoontui keväällä 2021 keskustelemaan keskipitkän aikavälin ilmastosuunnitelmasta (KAISU). Aineistossa selvitettiin kokeellisen asetelman avulla suomalaisten näkemyksiä KAISU-kansalaisraadin toiminnasta. Aineisto on kerätty osana Kansalaismielipidepaneelia, joka kuuluu kansalliseen yleisen mielipiteen mittaamisen infrastruktuuriin (The Finnish Research Infrastructure for Public Opinion, FIRIPO). Kontrolliryhmältä kysyttiin muun muassa, pitävätkö he kansalaisraatia luotettavana menetelmänä Suomen ilmastopolitiikan valmistelussa sekä uskovatko he, että kansalaisraati pystyy tuottamaan hyviä ehdotuksia politiikan valmisteluun. Tämän jälkeen vastaajia pyydettiin arvioimaan eri väittämiä koskien ilmastopolitiikkaa. Vastaajilta kysyttiin muun muassa, onko Suomen ilmastopolitiikka oikeudenmukaista ja tasapuolista, tulisiko ilmastonmuutosta torjua aktiivisemmin sekä kuinka paljon he luottavat eri toimijoihin (ympäristöministeriö, tutkijat, yritykset, hallitus) ilmastonmuutoksen hillinnässä. Tämän jälkeen kartoitettiin vastaajien mielipiteitä politiikasta yleisesti. Heiltä kysyttiin muun muassa, ottavatko poliittiset päättäjät kansalaisten näkemykset huomioon päätöksenteossaan sekä ovatko kansalaiset kykeneviä puntaroimaan poliittisia kysymyksiä. Kyselyn lopussa kartoitettiin vastaajien yleistä luottamusta toisiin ihmisiin sekä luottamusta eri tahoihin ilmastonmuutosta koskevan tiedon lähteinä (esimerkiksi hallitus, ympäristöministeriön virkahenkilöt, kansalaisraadit, sosiaalinen media, yliopistot ja tutkimuslaitokset). Taustamuuttujia aineistossa ovat muun muassa ikä, sukupuoli, äidinkieli, koulutus, maakunta, kotitalouden vuositulot, kiinnostus politiikasta ja puoluekanta. The data relates to the Citizens' Jury funded by the Ministry of the Environment, which convened in spring 2021 to discuss the Medium-term Climate Policy Plan (KAISU). The data was used to examine Finnish citizens' views on the functioning of the KAISU Citizens' Jury through an experimental design. The data was collected as part of the Citizen Opinion Panel, which is part of The Finnish Research Infrastructure for Public Opinion (FIRIPO). At the beginning of the survey, respondents are asked to evaluate statements concerning current political issues, such as their views on the social and health care reform, cuts to public services, and efforts to combat climate change in Finland. In the next section of the survey, the respondents in the experimental group read a short text concerning climate policy decision-making in Finland. The survey used a randomized experimental design in which the experimental groups were presented with a text containing four different statements (Q4, Q5, Q6, and Q8) in two different forms (versions A and B), with varying word choices. Four aspects were varied in the text: the organizer of the Citizens' Jury (the Ministry of the Environment or university researchers), the selection method of the Jury (emphasis on diversity and representativeness or no mention), the Jury's preparation (prior familiarization with research data or no mention), and an example of the Jury commenting on the Ministry's proposed measures (an example of the Jury's potential to influence or no example). Additionally, a control group C was included, which was not presented with any text about the Citizens' Jury. However, the control group was still asked questions about the Citizens' Jury. For example, they were asked whether they consider the Citizens' Jury to be a reliable method in the preparation of Finland's climate policy and whether they believe that the Jury is capable of producing good proposals for policy development. Following this, the respondents were asked to evaluate various statements related to climate policy. These included questions about whether Finnish climate policy is fair and equitable, whether climate change should be tackled more actively, and how much they trust different actors (the Ministry of the Environment, researchers, companies, the government) to mitigate climate change. The survey then explored the respondents' general political views, including whether political decision-makers take citizens' views into account in their decision-making and whether citizens are capable of deliberating on political issues. At the end of the survey, respondents were asked about their general trust in other people as well as their trust in various sources of climate-related information (e.g., the government, officials at the Ministry of the Environment, citizens' juries, social media, universities, and research institutes). The background variables included are the respondent's age, gender, native language, education, region, household's gross annual income, political interest, and political party preference

Experiences of People with Fatigue Syndrome in Applying for Social Security Benefits 2024
Aineisto koostuu kirjoituksista, joissa väsymysoireyhtymää sairastavat henkilöt kertovat kokemuksistaan liittyen sosiaaliturvaetuuksien hakemiseen. Aineisto on kerätty alun perin sosiaalityön maisterintutkielmaa varten. The data consists of writings in which people with fatigue syndrome talk about their experiences of applying for social security benefits. The data was originally collected for a Master's thesis in social work. In the writing call, people with ME/CFS were asked to write about their experiences of applying for social security benefits if they had had difficulties in getting the benefit they had applied for or had been refused it. The call for contributions included a number of questions to help with the writing process. These provided the opportunity to describe, for example, how the difficulty or refusal of benefit has affected the respondent's life and well-being, the emotions that the situation has caused, or the support and help that the respondent has received from different sources in applying for benefit. As background information, respondents were asked about their main source of income, the duration and severity of their illness, and whether they had a diagnosis of fatigue syndrome. The data were organised into an easy to use HTML version at FSD
