Stem Of The Arts: Incorporating Art Into Stem Fields
Sherri MartinieThroughout this research project, we explored how arts can be intertwined into the STEM field. Collectively, we planned, created and facilitated three activities that centered around different styles of art-specifically the areas of art, music and dance. Our goal was to express to students how art and STEM can be used together and prove STEM is needed in areas of art. We conducted this research at Woodrow Wilson Elementary and various STEAM nights throughout the USD 383 school district. At the beginning of each activity, students were given a survey asking, “What is STEM?” and “Could art be a part of Stem?” Students recorded their responses before beginning the activities. The first activity we facilitated focused on incorporating art into STEM. Fourth-grade students were given the opportunity to let their imaginations run wild by using static electricity to make their creations come to life. Students were given a variety of materials (cardboard, tissue paper, markers and glue) to construct a “movable” project. After they finished, they were given balloons to explore how static electricity could make their art alive. The second activity we implemented centered around integrating music into STEM. Fifth-grade students used iPads to explore the Tynker App and create choreographed dances. Students activated their prior knowledge of coding to design a character and code it to create a dance. The third activity we conducted focused on incorporating music into STEM. Sixth-grade students were given a Makey Makey and asked to create a song utilizing their understanding of circuits. Using alligator clips, students were able to connect to a conductive material (bananas) and control their circuit boards. They were able to investigate how closed circuits worked in order to appropriately make the Makey Makey work. After each activity, we gave the students another short survey with the following two questions, “Could art be a part of STEM?” and “If so, how?” Before the activities, 80% of students stated that they could see art being a part of STEM. After facilitating each activity 90% of the students said they thought art was a part of STEM
Understanding the role of sexual transmission in the spread of ZIKA virus using an individual-based interconnected population model

Pre-Print, Unpublished Manuscript.Zika virus has affected the world as a long-term threat. Modeling its transmission is important in order to facilitate forecasts and control measures. We propose a novel node-based interconnected population model to simulate both vectored and sexual transmission of Zika virus. Using a sexual contact network, we incorporate heterogeneous mixing in the host population with stochastic transmission for realistic predictions. We also incorporate climatic variations in our model, which affect the mosquito vector population and consequently the arbovirus transmission. We perform extensive simulations to understand the effects of sexual transmission rate and network topology on the spreading of infections. Sexual transmission contributes to the epidemic spread and under certain conditions, can sustain it up to several months without vectors. This can potentially lead to recurrences once the mosquitoes overwinter. We also find that sexual transmission can have a stronger effect when vectored transmission is relatively weaker due to climatic conditions. Our results show that vectored and sexual transmission affect the disease dynamics differently
Effect of extracellular vesicles on cancer cell lines in vitro and biodistribution in an ectopic osteosarcoma mouse model

HaubHuman umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (HUC-MSCs) have an enormous therapeutic potential because of their immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. However, there are limitations for their therapeutic use due to low cell survival after implantation, the risk of culture-borne pathogens, and the risk of embolism and thrombosis after intravenous infusion. Exosomes, on the other hand, constitute an important part of the MSCs secretome and may play a role in their therapeutic effects. Here, it was demonstrated that HUC-MSC-derived exosomes accumulate in human and mouse osteosarcoma cell lines in vitro and reduce their proliferation. The distribution of HUC-MSCs exosomes was shown in osteosarcoma tumor-bearing mice. Exosome distribution in vivo was observed using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of gadolinium-labeled exosomes and by fluorescent imaging after infusion of near infrared dye-labeled exosomes. HUC-MSC exosomes accumulated in the tumor throughout the 48 hours post-injection period. In contrast, synthetic lipid nanoparticle accumulates in tumor only for the first 3 hours post-injection. In summary, this study showed that HUC-MSCs exosomes can accumulate to osteosarcoma cells in vitro and in vivo, and thus they may be useful for detecting cancer metastasis

Classroom Behavior Management Chart
This paper will discuss effective classroom behavior management in Saudi Arabia. For the purpose of this study, behavior management is defined as the tools that teachers use to keep students focused on learning, highly engaged and productive. Creative behavior management is important because without it, teachers waste their time and effort on correcting behavior and not on teaching. Good classroom management prevents disruptive behavior and helps teachers address behavior issues when they happen. 21st century classrooms are different because they rely on collaborative learning more than lecture learning. So, we should take into account as teachers, that collaborative learning requires other tools and rules to be followed by 21st century students. Studies have shown that using a visual classroom behavior management chart is an effective way to manage 21st century classrooms, because it takes into account six essential elements (Discussion, Support, Activity, Movement, Engagement, Success) in order to accomplish success in the learning. There are many strategies for using classroom behavior management charts to reduce classroom disruptions and office referrals, improve classroom climate, increase student on-task behavior and establish respectful and civil interactions. The key benefits of using classroom behavior management charts are teachers establish clear expectations with logical and fair responses to misbehavior, teachers spend less time disciplining and more time teaching, teachers learn tools to motivate students to do their best, and students are taught how to behave responsibly. This study involved training students at the beginning of the school year to educate them about behavior expectations and the positive relationship between good behavior and learning. In this project, behavior expectations will be presented to students on posters and reviewed by the teacher frequently. The anticipated success and improved learning in the classroom will be determined after one semester of implementation
Proposed Curriculum for Physical Education to Elementary School for Girls in Saudi Arabia According to the American Education System
The purpose of this proposal is to investigate and design Physical Education and Health-related curriculum programs for girls in Saudi Arabic elementary schools. The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase is the initiatives for preparation and design (training packet) for female teachers on how to teach physical education and designing curriculum for girls. The second phase is for implementing the physical education curriculum after the preparation of a specialized curriculum for the students in the academic year 2019-2020. This quantitative study will employ two groups: an intervention group using American instructional methods for teaching physical education and the controlled group which will use the teaching instruction based on Saudi Arabia physical education for boys. Ten elementary schools for girls will be randomly selected based on school location (north, south, east, and west regions) in Riyadh. The goal for implementing physical education for girls at elementary schools is to help build fitness, improve health, develop social skills, and positively affect the appearance and psychological conditions for girls
Initiating Aha moments when implementing person-centered care in nursing homes: a multi-arm, pre-post intervention
Comprehensive adoption of culture change via person-centered care (PCC) practices in nursing homes has been slow. Change such as this, requires transformation of organizational culture, frequently generating resistance and slow moving change. This study examined how nursing homes perceive their adoption of PCC practices across seven domains and how these perceptions change in response to an educational intervention embedded in a statewide program, Promoting Excellent Alternatives in Kansas nursing homes (PEAK 2.0). Given perception is an important feature of the change process, it was hypothesized that pre-adopters engaging in PEAK 2.0’s initial Foundation year (level 0) would have lower perceived PCC adoption following a year of education and exposure to PCC, whereas adopters (PEAK 2.0 level 1–5 homes) would have higher perceived PCC adoption following a year of participation in their respective level in the program
Teacher Assistants in the General Education Classroom
The primary goal of special education is to help students with individualized needs to thrive and find success in the school environment. Research evidence from over the last 30 years in education has consistently demonstrated that students who are mainstreamed, or who are allowed to attend the general classroom with their peers, are more successful. However, there currently is not an infrastructure for supporting these students in the Saudi classroom. This is why increased implementation of professionals and teacher aides are critical to the realization of Saudi Arabia's goals, as they relate to education. Paraprofessionals are an important part of the team that works to help students with special needs achieve success, and they are uniquely qualified to ensure that learners' individual needs are met as they work toward the primary objectives in the general classroom. The current study will consider the best way to increase the number of teacher aides in the system
A spatio-temporal individual-based network framework for West Nile virus in the USA: Spreading pattern of West Nile virus

PLOS Computational Biology, 15(3), e1006875. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1006875West Nile virus (WNV)—a mosquito-borne arbovirus—entered the USA through New York City in 1999 and spread to the contiguous USA within three years while transitioning from epidemic outbreaks to endemic transmission. The virus is transmitted by vector competent mosquitoes and maintained in the avian populations. WNV spatial distribution is mainly determined by the movement of residential and migratory avian populations. We developed an individual-level heterogeneous network framework across the USA with the goal of understanding the long-range spatial distribution of WNV. To this end, we proposed three distance dispersal kernels model: 1) exponential—short-range dispersal, 2) power-law—long-range dispersal in all directions, and 3) power-law biased by flyway direction —long-range dispersal only along established migratory routes. To select the appropriate dispersal kernel we used the human case data and adopted a model selection framework based on approximate Bayesian computation with sequential Monte Carlo sampling (ABC-SMC). From estimated parameters, we find that the power-law biased by flyway direction kernel is the best kernel to fit WNV human case data, supporting the hypothesis of long-range WNV transmission is mainly along the migratory bird flyways. Through extensive simulation from 2014 to 2016, we proposed and tested hypothetical mitigation strategies and found that mosquito population reduction in the infected states and neighboring states is potentially cost-effective
Effects of alternatives to zinc oxide or antibiotics on nursery pig diets
With a need for an antibiotic replacement, the objective of this study was to evaluate the differences between pigs fed medium chain fatty acids versus carbadox or zinc oxide. A total of 360 weanling pigs (DNA 200x400, 5.4±0.07kg BW) were fed for a 35-d trial. Pigs were allotted to pens in a complete randomized design with 6 pigs/pen and 10 pens/treatment. There were six dietary treatments: 1) Control; 2) 3000 ppm ZnO in phase 1 and 1500 ppm in Phase 2; 3) 50 g/ton carbadox 4)1% blend C6:C8:C10; 5) 1% Feed Energy R2 ( Feed Energy Corp, Des Moines, IA; 6)1% FORMI GML (ADDCON, Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany). These treatments were fed in two phases: Phase 1 from d 0 to d 7, Phase 2 from d 7 to d 19, and a common phase from d 19 to 35. During the trial, feeders and pigs were weighed weekly to calculate ADG, ADFI and G:F. Data was analyzed using GLIMMIX procedure of SAS (SAS Inst. Cary, NC). For overall treatment results (d 0 to 19), pigs fed ZnO were more efficient in ADG and ADFI (P<0.05), compared to the control and R2 diet, with other results being intermediate. For the entire trial, ADG was highest when fed ZnO compared to R2, with all other diets being intermediate. For ADFI, ZnO and carbadox were significantly higher (P<0.05) than R2; all other diets were intermediate. There were no significant differences overall for G:F (P=0.32). In conclusion, ZnO and carbadox showed a greater impact on ADG and ADFI; however, C6:C8:C10 diets and FORMI, may achieve similar results. Additional research should be collected to further demonstrate the value of MCFA compared to dietary antibiotics
