ANZAC- “coined out of material more precious than gold”: a look at how the Australian home front understood the Gallipoli campaign
Master of ArtsDepartment of HistoryAndrew OrrThis thesis will examine the home front of Australia during the Gallipoli campaign of 1915 in order to better understand how Australians conceived of the battle. It argues that individuals within the office of the prime minister self-consciously interpreted the battle in an attempt to establish a uniform national identity that was separate from British imperialism. It also argues that the campaign reinforced prewar gender roles for men and women. Historians have largely ignored the Australian home front during World War I and the immediate postwar period, focusing instead on how Gallipoli has been memorialized over time or on traditional military aspects of the campaign. Analyzing such themes as gender, identity, and race brings questions of citizenship and male and female gender roles into a perspective not yet adequately explored in historical literature. Applying these perspectives to the subject of Australia and Gallipoli, helps us to understand that the campaign was far more than merely a military engagement. It was a social experience that enabled the executive powers of the Australian government the ability to formulate a national identity and restructure society into the image it desired
Foreign direct investment, growth, and spillover effects

The purpose of this paper is to examine foreign direct investment in a comprehensive but straightforward way. We hope to do this by examining FDI in a generalized and historical sense, FDI’s relationship with growth, and the means by which FDI influences growth and productivity
Effect of varying levels of products containing medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) compared to zinc oxide (ZnO) and carbadox on nursery pig performance
This study evaluated whether products containing medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) are able to replace antibiotics and feed additives, specifically ZnO and carbadox, in increasing nursery pig performance. In this 35 d experiment, there were 360 weanling pigs (DNA 200x400; 5.4 ± 0.07 kg) testing 6 different treatments: 1) control; 2) 50 g/ton carbadox; 3) d 0 to d 7: 3,000 ppm P1/ d-8 to d-19:1,500 ppm P2 ZnO; 4) 1% blend of C6, C8, C10; 5) 1% Feed Energy R2 (Feed Energy Corp., Des Moines, IA); 6) 1% FORMI GML (ADDCON, Bitterfield-Wolfen, Germany). There were 10 replicates of 6 pigs/pen in a completely randomized pattern. From d 1 to d 19 pigs were fed the experimental treatments and a control from d 20 to d 35. The data collected weekly were pig and feeder weights. The experimental unit for growth performance was each pen, but for the blood and fecal it was individual pig. This study used the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS (SAS Inst. 9.4; Cary, NC). In the overall treatment data (d 0 to d 19), pigs fed ZnO had improved average daily gain (ADG) (P =0.0001) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) (P =0.0004) than those fed the R2 and control formulas which were statistically similar to each other. In the overall data (P =0.012) of ADG, pigs fed ZnO were significantly more efficient than those fed R2 or the control. In the overall ADFI calculated (P =0.001), pigs fed ZnO and carbadox consumed significantly more feed than pigs fed the R2 diet. The FORMI and C6:C8:C10 diets were found to have intermediate performance. Therefore, MCFA were not able to be proven more efficient for nursery pig growth performance than ZnO or carbadox
Evaluating alternatives to zinc oxide or antibiotics in nursery pig diets
There has been an increase in consumer pressure to reduce the use of ZnO and antimicrobials in swine diets. Since there is limited research evaluating alternatives on nursery pig growth performance to replace antibiotics or ZnO. This study was conducted to test the dietary effects of ZnO, carbadox, and medium chain fatty acids (MCFA). The experiment used 360 (DNA 200x400, initially 5.4 ± 0.06 kg BW) nursery pigs weaned at 21d. At weaning, the pens were assigned to treatment in a complete randomized design containing 10 pens of treatments and 6 pigs/pen. The six dietary treatments included 1.) negative control, 2.) 3,000ppm ZnO phase 1; 1,500ppm ZnO phase 2, 3.) 50g/ton carbadox, 4.) 1% blend of C6:C8:C10, 5.) 1% feed energy R2 (Feed Energy Corp, Des Moines, IA) and 6.) 1% Formi GML (ADDCON, Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany). Pigs and feeders were weighed weekly to determine ADG, ADFI, and G:F in Phase 1 (0 to 7), Phase 2 (8 to 19), a common diet was fed from d 20 to 35d of the experiment. Data was analyzed using the SAS GLIMMIX (SAS version 9.4, Cary, NC) program with P0.05) for ADG, ADFI, or G:F. These results suggest that more research is needed to determine whether MCFA based products can replace ZnO or carbadox with little overall effect
Evaluating corn distiller's dried grains with solubles as a rumen undegradable protein replacement for soybean meal in Boer-type grower rations
A global increase in goat meat demand reveals a gap in knowledge for US farmers looking to increase profit margins through replacing rumen undegradable protein sources. We investigated whether corn distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS) or corn gluten feed (CGF) can be utilized as a lower cost replacement for soybean meal (SBM) in Boer-type grower rations. In our experiment, 75 Boer-type goats (26.9 0.2 kg, approx. 70 d of age) were used in a completely randomized design for 35 d. Goats were assigned to pens based on weight and then pens were randomly assigned to one of 5 experimental diets: 1) 100% SBM, 2) 100% DDGS, 3) 66% DDGS/33% CGF, 4) 33%DDGS/66% CGF and 5) 100% CGF. Pens consisted of 3 goats per pen with 5 pens per treatment. Each wk BW, ADG, ADFI and G:F were measured. Data was analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure in SAS (v. 9.4, Cary, NC) with pen as the experimental unit and a designate alpha value of 0.05. Our results showed no treatment effect of diet for variables (P<0.05), except for feed cost, measured in dollars/goat for 42 d (P=0.0008). Feed cost (1.43 less for goats fed CGF or DDGS compared to those fed SBM (P<0.05). Treatments including DDGS or CGF showed a significant (P<0.05) quadratic effect for ADFI, g/d (P=0.038) indicating a feed intake reduction for utilization of both alternative protein sources: 66%DDGS/33%CGF, 33%DDGS/66%CGF, 100% DDDGS, 100% CGF(1,022, 1,074, 1,110 and 1140 respectively.) Therefore, our research shows that DDGS can be effectively utilized with CGF as a lower cost rumen undegradable protein replacement for SBM while maintaining BW, ADG, ADFI, and G:F metrics
Method for spectral phase retrieval of single attosecond pulses utilizing the autocorrelation of photoelectron streaking spectra
We propose an algorithm for retrieving the spectral phase of an isolated attosecond pulse based on the photoelectron spectra generated in atoms by the attosecond pulse in the presence of a time-delayed infrared laser. Instead of employing the whole set of the streaking spectra as in the previous phase retrieval algorithms, we calculate the autocorrelation (AC) of the streaking trace, and use it to extract the spectral phase. We illustrate that this method can be used to extract narrow- as well as broadband attosecond pulses. The method converges much faster and is more accurate. We also define two parameters, V and A. By comparing the AC pattern and the V and A parameters from the experiment and from the retrieved pulse, this method provides a metric to evaluate the accuracy of the retrieved pulse

Through the inter-disciplinary intersection, both big data and anthropology could be mutually and greatly impacted, but due to the widespread perception that the fields function aversely, seemingly few people are investigating. The intersection has already illuminated fascinating research and practical applications that could revolutionize how data is interpreted and is utilized both in academia and the private sector. The literature review will seek to showcase these applications through a number of both academic and nonacademic sources which relate anthropology and big data
Input Use Decisions with Greater Information on Crop Conditions: Implications for Insurance Moral Hazard and the Environment
Emerging precision agriculture technologies allow farms to make input decisions with greater information on crop conditions. This greater information occurs by providing improved predictions of crop yields using remote sensing and crop simulation models and by allowing farms to apply inputs within the growing season when some crop conditions are already realized. We use a stylized model with uncertainty in yield and price to examine how greater information on crop conditions (i.e., a “forecast”) affects input use for insured and uninsured farms. We show that moral hazard decreases—farms apply more inputs—as the forecast accuracy improves when the forecast indicates good yields, and vice versa when the forecast indicates bad yields. In the long run, moral hazard decreases in response to an improvement in forecast accuracy. Even though moral hazard decreases in the long run, indemnity payments are likely to increase in the long run—driven by the increase in moral hazard when the forecast indicates bad crop conditions. We use the results of our model to discuss the potential impact of different technologies and types of inputs on the federal crop insurance program and the environment
Bridge scour evaluation in cohesive soils using physical and geo-electrical soil properties
Doctor of PhilosophyDepartment of Civil EngineeringStacey E. Tucker-KuleszaScour accounts for 60% of all bridge collapses nationwide. There are two recommended methods for evaluating scour in cohesive soils, and both are flawed. The most common method is to use the scour evaluation manual from the Federal Highway Administration, Hydraulic Engineering Circular-18. The empirical equations, however, are based on the results of flume tests using cohesionless soils and are typically over conservative. The second alternative, performing site specific erosion testing, can be cost prohibitive, as erosion testing using available apparatuses is highly specialized and time consuming. Therefore, this research seeks to provide a new methodology that gives more accurate information than the equations based on cohesionless soils and is more cost effective than erosion testing. Various soil characteristics that affect the erosion of soil also influence in situ bulk electrical resistivity measurements. The objectives of this research were to develop a rapid methodology to predict soil erodibility using electrical resistivity and build an empirical equation to predict critical shear stress for erosion in cohesive soils using various soil properties. A total of 26 sites were used for in situ testing and soil sampling. Soil samples were used for erosion testing with the Erosion Function Apparatus and measuring geotechnical properties. The results indicate that electrical resistivity works as an excellent binary classifier for identifying soil with high erodibility. An electrical resistivity over 50 Ωm has a 93% probability of classifying the soil as high erodibility. As such, electrical resistivity tomography can be utilized to rapidly prioritize existing bridges where soils near the surface are classified as highly erodible. Regarding the second objective, multiple variable screening criteria determined percent fines, liquid limit, and electrical resistivity as the statistically significant model variables for predicting critical shear stress. Electrical resistivity is an increasingly common measurement by transportation agencies and this is the first time it has been identified as a variable for predicting critical shear stress. The use of electrical resistivity reduces the need for uncommon geotechnical, geochemical, and biological soil tests to predict critical shear stress. Design factors for implementing the developed model for a practical design were also recommended based on probabilistic analysis. If adopted by transportation agencies, this research will reduce the need for cost prohibitive site specific testing and overconservative bridge scour designs
