    Kirmser Undergraduate Research Award - Group category, grand prizeJun, Sim JungThis study focuses on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) and the link between adulthood depression in the Hispanic culture. The two variables, ACE scores and depression, will be evaluated and examine how they correlate with one another. This study hypothesizes how the higher the ACE score an individual has, the more likely they are to experience depression as an adult. The target population will be hispanic individuals above the age of 25. The reason behind wanting to focus on the Hispanic culture is because past studies have mainly focused on predominantly white cultures and because individuals need to understand the full impact of their experiences and how better approaches can be created to help them address their potential trauma and mental illness. This study further investigates how impactful childhood experiences have on an individual’s adulthood and how it can be helpful for practitioners to better understand their clients in a way that can be beneficial for both client and practitioner. It is important to study all populations, not just the majority group, in the United States so that research will not be overgeneralized

    Autophagy–lysosome pathway alterations and alpha-synuclein up-regulation in the subtype of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, CLN5 disease

Scientific Reports, 9(1), 151. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-018-36379-zNeuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are a group of inherited neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorders. CLN5 deficiency causes a subtype of NCL, referred to as CLN5 disease. CLN5 is a soluble lysosomal protein with an unclear function in the cell. Increased levels of the autophagy marker protein LC3-II have been reported in several subtypes of NCLs. In this report, we examine whether autophagy is altered in CLN5 disease. We found that the basal level of LC3-II was elevated in both CLN5 disease patient fibroblasts and CLN5-deficient HeLa cells. Further analysis using tandem fluorescent mRFP-GFP-LC3 showed the autophagy flux was increased. We found the alpha-synuclein (α-syn) gene SNCA was highly up-regulated in CLN5 disease patient fibroblasts. The aggregated form of α-syn is well known for its role in the pathogenicity of Parkinson’s disease. Higher α-syn protein levels confirmed the SNCA up-regulation in both patient cells and CLN5 knockdown HeLa cells. Furthermore, α-syn was localized to the vicinity of lysosomes in CLN5 deficient cells, indicating it may have a lysosome-related function. Intriguingly, knocking down SNCA reversed lysosomal perinuclear clustering caused by CLN5 deficiency. These results suggest α-syn may affect lysosomal clustering in non-neuronal cells, similar to its role in presynaptic vesicles in neurons

    Effects of pH on Double Stranded RNA Stability in European Corn Borer Nucleases

    RNA interference (RNAI) is an immune response that can be exploited to make greener pesticides. It works by inciting suppression of a specific target gene using fed or injected dsRNA. Targeting a specific gene sequence also means RNAi can be used to target a specific organism. However, some insects, such as lepidopterans, have nucleases, called dsRNases, in their gut and hemolymph that sever dsRNA and lower RNAi efficiency (1). Ostrinia nubilalis, the European corn borer, (ECB), is a prime example of a lepidopteran pest which decimates corn supplies across the Midwest and does not respond to RNAi. Comparison of dsRNA stability in dsRNase genes in ECB and western corn rootworm (WCR), a coleopteran pest that has very high RNAi efficiency, indicates that dsRNA is rapidly degraded in ECB tissues, but not WCR tissues, despite similar expression of dsRNase genes in both species. These findings suggest that another variable, such as pH may be influencing dsRNA stability in insects (2)

    Exploring root rot pathogens in wheat-pea rotations in Kansas

    In 2018, over 277,000 bushels of wheat were produced on 7.7 million acres of land in Kansas alone. Based on the price of wheat by the end of 2018, this accounted for $1.44 million. This wheat is normally rotated with soybeans or fallow, but recent interest has arisen regarding the growth of peas in northern Kansas. As of 2019, there are both research and commercial growing operations underway. Many plant diseases have been especially prevalent during the summer because of the high rainfall and heat. In order to assess the severity of pea disease in Kansas, as well as explore potential interconnectivity between wheat and pea pathogens, a survey was conducted, and efforts were made to isolate and culture fungal pathogens of both wheat and pea

    Supporting the Pedagogical Needs of Faculty Teaching Undergraduate Business Students at Kansas State University

    In 2019 Kansas State University was a research site for a large-scale, collaborative study on how academic libraries can best support the pedagogical needs of faculty teaching undergraduate business students. Coordinated by Ithaka S+R, a not-for-profit organization that supports academic communities, the project aimed to answer the questions (1) What are the teaching practices and support needs of instructors of undergraduate business? (2) How can libraries support undergraduate teaching in business? Ithaka S+R published a capstone report based on data from all participating institutions. Researchers at Kansas State University produced this report, based on local data, to identify ways that K-State Libraries can better support undergraduate teaching at K-State’s College of Business Administration
