Developing Lifelong Singers Through Exploration, Performance, and Reflection: Supplemental File 1
In my videos you will see three different lessons and two different grade levels. In lesson one, sixth grade students are learning about musical form and preparing to use Sound Trap to create an original composition in rondo form. Lesson two, my high school women’s choir rehearsed and prepared for their state contest. The last video shows the women’s choir discussing the Kansas State High School Activities Association State rubric and explaining what each category is and what they think it means. After the rubric was explained they listened to themselves perform, rated themselves and justified their ratings.
Kansas State University has exposed me to many teaching strategies and has helped me grow as an educator. The two major developments in my teaching have been the use of assessments in the classroom, whether it is peer assessment or self-assessment, and the approach I take to teaching new music. I have learned that I do not need to spoon feed my students new music. The moment that I relinquished control and allowed them to explore and make mistakes I began to see a higher level of accountability from them. My students have learned to be more independent by me stepping back and allowing them to grow as musicians and humans
Evaluation of medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) supplementation in nursery pig diets
Increased consumer pressure has motivated the pork industry to seek antibiotic alternatives that provide a similar response in growth performance. One possible alternative is medium chain fatty acids (MCFA), but there is limited research evaluating their response. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of MCFA-based products, carbadox, and ZnO on nursery growth performance. A total of 360 nursery pigs (DNA 200×400; initially 5.4 ± 0.07 kg; 21 d if age) were fed one of the following treatments: 1) negative control; 2) 3,000ppm ZnO in Phase 1, 1,500ppm ZnO in Phase 2; 3) 50g/ton carbadox; 4) 1% blend of C6:C8:C10; 5) 1% Feed Energy R2 (Feed Energy Corp, Des Moines, IA); 6) 1% FORMI GML (ADDCON, Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany). Treatments were fed in two phases (d 0 to 7; d 7 to 19) followed by a common diet (d 20 to 35). A completely randomized design was used with 6 pigs/pen and 10 pens/treatment. Feeders and pigs were weighed weekly to determine ADG, ADFI, and G:F. Data was analyzed using PROC GLMMIX (SAS version 9.4; Cary, NC). Overall (d 0 to 35), pigs fed ZnO and carbadox had greater (P<0.05) ADG and ADFI, than pigs fed FORMI, R2, C6:C8:C10, or the negative control. Pigs fed FORMI and C6:C8:C10 had similar (P<0.05) ADG and ADFI, while R2 had decreased (P<0.05) ADG and ADFI compared to pigs fed the negative control. There was no significance in overall G:F (P=0.32). Due to the variable results of the three MCFA-products used in this experiment, further research is needed to warrant specific MCFA-products as viable substitutions for carbadox or ZnO in nursery pig diets
Effects of substituting medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) for carbadox and zinc oxide (ZnO) on weanling pig performance
There is consumer pressure to remove use of carbadox and ZnO from weanling pig diets. This experiment tests the effects of MCFA’s versus carbadox and ZnO on weanling pig growth when compared to an unmedicated control group. A total of 360 weanling pigs (DNA 200*400; 5.4 ±0.06kg BW; 21 d age) were used in a 35-d experiment using 6 treatments with 10 pens per treatment using the grouped completely randomized design. The treatments were 1) Control 2) ZnO (3000 ppm in phase 1 and 1500 ppm in phase 2); 3) 50g/ton carbadox; 4) 1% blend C6:C8:C10; 5) 1% feed energy R2 (Feed Corp Demoin, IA); 6) 1% FORMI GML (ADDCON, Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany). Phase 1 diets were fed days 0 to 7, phase 2 diets days 8 to 19 and a common diet was fed from days 20 to 35. Pigs and feeders were weighed to calculate ADG, ADFI and G: F. Data was analyzed with PROC GLIMMIX (SAS version 9.4 Cary, NC). During treatment (d 0-19), pigs fed FORMI showed similar (P>0.05) ADG and ADFI to pigs fed ZnO and carbadox, while those fed R2 had lower ADG (P>0.05) when compared to those fed ZnO and carbadox. Overall (d 0-35) pigs fed ZnO had greater (P0.05) in ADG between pigs fed ZnO, carbadox, C6:C8:C10, FORMI or the control. Pigs fed ZnO and carbadox had statistically higher (P0.05) between pigs fed ZnO, carbadox, C6:C8:C10, FORMI or the control. Ultimately pigs fed FORMI showed similar ADG and ADFI to pigs fed ZnO and carbadox in both the treatment (0-19) and the overall (0-35). However, pigs fed R2 showed consistently lower ADG and ADFI than those fed ZnO in both time period
Growth and economic impact of Boer type goats fed diets with corn gluten feed and cor dried distillers grain with solubles as a substitute for soybean meal
Corn co-products are a relatively inexpensive protein source when compared to soybean meal (SBM) and is readily available in the Midwest. This experiment was conducted to determine the growth and economic impact of replacing SBM with varying levels of corn dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS) and corn gluten feed (CGF) in Boer-type goat growth performance. The experiment was 35 d and included 75 Boer-type goats (26 ± 0.2kg, approximately 70 d of age). Goats were divided into 3 goats per pen and 5 pens per treatment with diets being randomly assigned to each pen, with the pen as the experimental unit. The diets were isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets, but varied in protein sources, 1)100% SBM; 2)100% DDGS/0% CGF; 3)66% DDGS/33% CGF, 4)33% DDGS/66% CGF; 5)100% CGF/0% DDGS. Data was collected by recording how much feed was added on a daily basis and weighing goats and feeders once a week. The GLIMMIX procedure of SAS (v. 9.4, Cary, NC) was used to analyze the data with an alpha value equal to 0.05. No difference in final BW, ADG, ADFI, and G:F was detected (P>0.05) with changing protein source. Replacing SBM with corn co-products lowered feed cost/ kg of feed about $0.04 but there was no detected evidence (P>0.05) that replacing SBM affected cost/kg of gain. However, feed cost/goat was significantly lower (P=0.0008) when SBM was replaced by corn co-products. In conclusion, CGF and DDGS can economically replace SBM in Boer-type goat growing diets
Effect of corn gluten feed or corn dried distiller grains with solubles as a substitute for soybean meal of Boer-type goat
Goat populations have increased over the past few years. Because slaughter numbers of goats increased about 7 percent last year to 2.07 million, and exports gained 6 percent to 28.4 million ton (Bloomberg 2018). The advantage, for products are that they are an inexpensive protein source that is highly available in the Midwest. There is little research evaluating different ingredients on goat growth performance. Therefore, the objective of this experiment was to determine how corn gluten feed (CFG) or corn dried distillers’ grains with solubles (DDGS) could impact goat growth performance, and economics with soybean meal (SBM). Treatments were isocaloric and isonitrogenous but varied in protein source: 1) soybean meal; 2) 100% DDGS/0% CGF; 3) 66% DDGS/33% CGF; 4) 33% DDGS/66% CGF; 5) 0% DDGS/100% CGF and fed to seventy-five Boer-type goats (26.9±0.2 kg). There were 3 goats per pen and 5 pens per treatment for 35 days in a completely randomized design. The experimental unit was housed pens. Data was analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedures of SAS (v. 9.4, Cary, NC), with 0.05 as the accepted alpha. Overall, diet had no obscene impact on growth (P>0.05). However, it did impact on feed cost per goat. Feed cost per kg was lower in corn co-products than soybean meal as the protein source. This $0.04/kg of feed decrease in feed cost, resulted lower (P = 0.0008) feed cost/goat for goats fed corn co-products compared to SBM. In summary, CGF or DDGS may be a cost-effective replacement for SBM in goat diets, with no detected impact in growth
Inquiries into Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus and Other WSM Associated Viruses
Wheat Streak Mosaic WSM) is a complex disease found to cause severe impact on wheat yield. Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV Triticum Mosaic Virus (TMV) and Wheat Mosaic Virus (WMOV) are all transmitted by Aceria tosichella, the wheat cun mite, and have been reported as the viruses associated with WSM. There is a research project on the genetic composition of the associated viruses as well as determining any novel viruses that may be involved in the disease. The process has begun with the virus assessment of neid samples by RT-PCR and sanger Sequencing in a different study, the potential of a common Insect in wheat fields. Rhopalosiphum padi, the Bird cherry oat aphid, to be a vector for WSMV was Investigated. R. Daar was found to be not a vector of WSMV through RT-PCR. The other proiect screened some wid-relative wheat plants for WSMV resistance Various lines of Aeglos tauschii, a landrace wheat, were tested for viral resistance by assessing the viral copy number by RT-PCR. The Initial result has demonstrated that one of the four selected lines may have promising tolerance The preliminary tests performed for each Inquiry provides Insight to Improving the respective experiment design for further understanding of how concerned parties such as farmers may better combat the disease
Blast disease in ryegrass is similar to rice blast in regard to infection cell biology
Magnaporthe oryzae has been devastating to various grasses. This is especially true in food crops around the globe. Resistance has been implemented but has not been completely successful due to the variability of the fungus. It is hypothesized that this is due in part to the presence of disposable mini-chromosomes. Ryegrass blast pathogen is closely related to the dangerous, emerging wheat blast pathogen, and understanding it can help us understand wheat blast as well as pathogen variability. The ryegrass pathogen on its own recently emerged as a serious threat to golf courses and sports fields in the U.S. Hypothesis: The ryegrass pathogen uses the same biotrophic (live-cell) invasion strategy as the extensively-studied rice blast pathogen

Relationship between turbulent structures and heat transfer in microfin enhanced surfaces using large eddy simulations and particle image velocimetry

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 136, 1282–1298. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijheatmasstransfer.2019.03.063Internally enhanced surfaces such as micro-fins are an important class of heat transfer enhancement in commercial applications. Many research papers discuss the design and optima of these surfaces. However, most previous studies have demonstrated only the macro relationship between the geometries of the micro-fins and heat transfer. The need for a deeper understanding of these fins arose from some currently unsolved problems that limit future development of enhanced surfaces. First, why are increases of heat transfer larger than area increases in micro-finned tubes in most cases? Second, why do internally micro-finned tubes typically have lower heat-transfer-enhanced ratios in laminar and transition flows? This work presents a novel method to analyze the detailed relationship between flow characteristics and heat transfer for one type of micro-fin. The goal of the paper was not to find a new Reynolds number-based correlation, but to find flow patterns responsible for heat transfer enhancement and understand the mechanisms that cause this. First, this paper introduces comprehensive experimental measurements including particle image velocimetry (PIV), measurement of the heat transfer coefficient and accuracy of pressure-drop measurements, all used to validate numerical approaches. Validated large eddy simulations (LES) are then used to predict flow characteristics and coherent structures (Q criterion). The numerical simulation includes both heat conduction in the metal structure and heat convection on the solid–fluid interface. Finally, the paper documents how the flow structures link with the enhancement of heat transfer in the micro-finned duct
At the Interface of Medicine and Dance
Kaela UrquhartThis paper will combine the arts and sciences in such a manner as to address the overwhelming prevalence of suicide in today’s society. An introduction will be given first to present the reader with the barriers of collaboration between the arts and sciences as well as to describe how the author chose to bring about an interdisciplinary perspective through the use of this particular topic of suicide. Next, the performance of the dance component of this Honors Project entitled In Loving Memory will be explained from the importance of the speech to the significance of the story that is told throughout the piece. After which, the paper will shift towards the pre-medical aspect of the project, addressing first how physicians can be more aware of the signs contributing to suicide within their patients. Then, the topic of suicide as a public health issue will be further examined. To finish it all up, a quick overview will be given, hitting the highpoints of this Honors Project and the issues that suicide presents to today’s physicians and society as a whole
