Effects of dried distillers grains with solubles and corn gluten feed on the overall growth and economic cos of growing Boer-type goats
This study was conducted to determine how substituting distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and corn gluten feed (CGF) for soybean meal (SBM) could affect the growth of Boer-type goats, along with the possible economic benefit of using a cheaper product such as DDGS and CGF. To determine this we measured BW gain from day 0 – 35, ADG, ADFI, G:F, feed cost ($/kg of feed), feed cost/goat, feed cost/kg of gain. For this study, we used 75 Boer-type goats (29.6 ± 0.02 kg, approximately 70 d of age) in a completely randomized design, with the pen as the experimental unit, with 3 goats per pen, and 5 pens per treatment. The research was conducted for 35 d and all diets fed were isocaloric and isonitrogenous but varied in protein source. The 5 different treatments were different combinations of SBM, DDGS, and CGF including: 1) 100% SBM, 2) 100% DDGS, 3) 66% DDGS/33% CGF, 4) 33% DDGS/66% CGF, 5) 100% CGF. Data was analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS with a 0.05 alpha value. After conducting this study, we found that there was no statistical significance for overall growth. The only significant differences were feed cost/goat (P = 0.0008) and a quadratic decrease (P = 0.049), and there was also a quadratic effect (P =0 .038) in ADFI. We came to the conclusion that 66% DDGS/33% CGF was the cheapest diet when looking purely at cost and not gain, but when considering both efficiency and economics, or the cost for each kg of weight gain, we found that 100% DDGS was the least expensive diet to use for growth in boer-type goats. In summary, this study proved that DDGS and CGF can be a successful substitution for SBM
The effects of replacing soybean meal with dried distiller's grain and corn gluten feed on Boer-type grower rations
Evaluating different Boer goat grower rations is important in being cost effective with goat growth and performance. There have been few research experiments done on goat growth. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of replacing SBM with varying levels of DDGS and CGF. There were 75 Boer- type goats that were approximately 70 d of age. There were 3 goats per pen and 5 pens per treatment. Goats were randomly assigned treatments and pens, and the experimental unit was the pen. The alpha value was 0.05, and the data was analyzed using GLIMMIX in SAS (v. 9.4, Cary, NC). The treatments were: 1) SBM; 2) 100% DDGS/0% CGF; 3) 66% DDGS/33% CGF; 4) 33% DDGS/66% CGF; 5) 0% DDGS/100% CGF. The treatments varied in protein sources however they were all isocaloric and isonitrogenous. The linear P value of ADG was 0.444, ADFI was 0.371, and G: F was 0.442, and this concludes that there were no detectable differences among treatments for ADG, ADFI, and G: F (P>0.05). The feed cost per goat for this experiment for the SBM was 7.96, 66% DDGS/33% CFG 7.54, and 0% DDGS/100% CFG was 0.77, 100% DDGS/0% CFG 0.79, 33% DDGS/66% CFG 0.86. The feed cost per pound of feed for the control was 0.09. This project concludes that DDGS and CGF can utilized as replacements for SBM in grower rations for Boer goats
Evaluating alternatives to zinc oxide or antibiotics in nursery pig diets
There is increasing consumer pressure to reduce the use of antimicrobials and ZnO in swine diets for health and environmental reasons, but thus far, research has shown few possible alternatives. In this study, medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) were compared to ZnO and carbadox for their overall efficacy on nursery pig performance. There was a total of 360 (DNA 200x400; 5.4±0.06 kg BW) nursery pigs weaned at 21d. At weaning, pigs were assigned to one of 60 pens (6 pigs/pen) resulting in 10 replicates in a complete randomized design. There were 6 treatments: 1.) control; 2.) 3,000 ppm ZnO phase 1, 1,500 ppm ZnO phase 2; 3.) 50 g/ton carbadox; 4.) 1% blend of C6:C8:C10; 5.) 1% Feed Energy R2 (Feed Energy Corp, Des Moines, IA); 6.) 1% FORMI GML (ADDCON, Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany). Common diets were provided on 20d to 35. Individual pig weights, feeder weights, and pounds of feed added were documented for each pen weekly. Data was analyzed using the SAS glimmix program with P<0.05. For the treatment phase of the study (0d to 19d), pigs fed ZnO, carbadox, or 1% FORMI had greater ADG compared to the control and the other MCFAs (P<0.0001). During this period, there was also difference in ADFI between pigs fed ZnO or those fed the control, MCFA, or 1% FORMI diets (P=0.0004). During the common phase there was no detected difference amongst the treatments for ADG (P=0.873), ADFI (P=0.089), and G:F (P= 0.158). In conclusion 1% FORMI had similar performance as ZnO and carbadox while the other tested MCFA may require additional research
Effects of corn distiller grains or corn gluten feed as a replacement for soybean meal in Boer goats
There is little published information on corn co-product effects when incorporated into goat diets. This study hoped to gain knowledge on what would be most effective and economically efficient diet to enhance goat growth performance. The objective of this experiment was to compare the growth performance and cost efficiency of corn gluten feed (CGF) or corn dried distiller grains (DDGS) as a substitute for soybean meal in Boer type goats. Seventy-five Boer-type goats with an average weight of 26.9±0.2 kg and age of 70 days were randomly assigned to one of the five treatments for 35 d. Pen was the experimental unit, with 3 goats/pen and 5 pens/treatment. Five treatments varied in protein sources, but were isonitrogenous and isocaloric, including 1) 100% DDGS/0% CGF (control), 2) 66% DDGS/33%CGF, 3) 66% DDGS/33% CGF, 4) 33% DDGS/66% CGF, and 5) 0% DDGS/100% CGF. Measured criteria were calculated weekly, including BW, ADG, ADFI, G:F, feed cost/kg of gain, and feed cost/kg of goat. GLIMMIX procedure was used to analyze data (SAS Inst., Cary, NC). There were no detected differences in final BW, ADG, ADFI, F:G, or cost/kg of gain by the experimental treatments (P > 0.05). However, the corn DDGS and CGF diets had a lower feed cost/goat (P = 0.0008) than the soybean meal. Overall, this experiment supports corn co-products, corn DDGS and CGF, being economically efficient enough to replace soybean meal in goat diets focusing on growth

Feasibility Study of Bioretention Cells

I focus on bio retention cells, also known as rain gardens, as an effective solution to alleviate storm water runoff. For the purpose of this project, I am a hypothetical Project Engineer for the City of Manhattan reporting on a solution for the recent floods. Prior to this formal report, I wrote a proposal identifying the need for the research. I wrote the report to two main specific target audiences, expert engineers and business executives. I start the report by explaining the problems associated with the recent floods in Manhattan. My research analyzed the efficiency of bio retention cells to alleviate storm water runoff. I also reported the cost to design, construct, and maintain bio retention cells. I end my report with my final recommendations and conclusions for the City of Manhattan
Investigating the Role of Social Responsibility on Veteran Student Retention
Despite considerable gains made towards increasing students’ interest in STEM education, one specific population, Veterans in engineering, suffers from disproportionally high attrition. Social responsibility is a motivating factor for becoming an engineer and has been identified as a successful intervention strategy to improve retention of first-year engineering students. Social responsibility is also a core value instilled by all branches of the U.S. military while actively serving. Therefore, the objective of this research study was to examine Veterans’ perceptions of social responsibility related to engineering. For this study, a survey instrument was designed, piloted, revised, and launched for instrument validation and exploratory examination of the relationship between social responsibility and Veteran students’ core beliefs. Results of this study showed that both Veteran and first-year non-Veteran engineering students strongly value the tenants of social responsibility. The results of this study indicate the potential for curriculum and policy changes to increase Veteran retention in engineering programs
Teaching Music through Listening and Project Based Learning: Supplemental File 1
Abstract. My Master’s report will overview my music teaching techniques in Music Technology, my project-based course for 7th and 8th grade students. In this course’s second project, students create their own drum loops with a drum machine and match music loops to make a full sounding song. We utilize the music software “Reason” to introduce Basic song form, Intro/Outro, Melody, Bass Line, and Chordal support in project two. Students will do their best to match their drums with appropriate music loops or match their entire, 60 second song, to the drums they create.
A development I’m excited to continue in my teaching for the future is readily teaching the “WHY.” I frequently teach in a hurry to convey as much information as possible but forget to give the students an exact reason or goal for each repetition. This has begun to transform many of the musicians I teach and provides greater comprehension every day I teach. Secondly the Master of Music coursework at Kansas State University has given me a new passion for my own philosophy of teaching music, through the main pillar of listening. Listening can provide students with feedback for self-knowledge in many musical and non-musical situations. This has provided many improvements in student behavior, my behavior, and our group cohesion. I now value teaching with this philosophy in mind because I’ve developed it myself through my coursework. It feels great to teach out of an authentic philosophy, and I’m excited to keep learning and molding what I do for each student

The application of social media within programs has grown exponentially over the past decade and has become a popular way for programs to engage and reach their stakeholders and inform engagement efforts. Consequently, organizations are utilizing data analytics from social media platforms as a way to measure impact. These data can help programs understand how program objectives, progress, and outcomes are disseminated and used (i.e., through discussions, viewing of content, following program social media pages)
