The Analysis of Illocutionary Types of Speech Acts in Yakin Nikah Web Series Season 1: Indonesian YouTube Short Film
Get PDFIn order to maintain a great means of communication between people, language use plays a significant role in the interaction process. Within the interaction process among speaker and hearer comes with an act or action along that is called speech acts, which refers to when a person is saying something, it is hoped that the hearer act as what the speaker intends him or her to do. Speech acts are always found in our daily basis, and even found in films, advertisements, and social media such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. With the existence of YouTube, many short length films are found to have speech acts especially in one of the YouTube series entitled “Yakin Nikah”. By investigating “Yakin Nikah” characters’ speech acts, this research aims to explore the types of speech acts that exist and to analyse how those speech acts are then classified into Illocutionary act. This research uses descriptive qualitative method, by using several techniques such as visual analysis and textual analysis through watching the short film, writing down the transcriptions of the characters, identifying the written transcriptions into illocutionary act classifications. It is found that, the Directives speech acts are mostly present, followed by Representatives, Expressive, and last is Commissive with no signs of Declarative speech acts. In which it indicates that the Directives speech acts is present due to the speakers mostly wants the hearer to do something or respond to what the speaker has intended the speaker to do, Expressive acts to indicate the person’s state of psychology and last is the speech acts of future actions
Investigating English Language as a Tool of Cultural Manipulation in English Medium Schools and Universities in Khulna City, Bangladesh
Get PDFThis study follows a quantitative research design to investigate the perception of students from English medium schools and universities towards English language learning and cultural manipulation in Bangladesh. A total of 300 students from three English medium schools, two private universities and two public universities participate in the survey. A simple random sampling technique is followed to define the sample size. Further, the study uses a questionnaire as a tool for collecting data. Then, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 21.0 software is used for analyzing the data. The findings reveal that majority of the respondents are practicing western culture, and therefore, our Bangladeshi culture is gradually being replaced. Though English language has been playing a great role for the communication, it has become a threat to our own culture. The students are much more attracted to western culture and lifestyle neglecting Bangladeshi ones. They start adopting western culture to the detriment of Bangladeshi tradition and culture. Finally, the paper concludes confirming that such kind of excessive indulgence in western culture undermines Bangladeshi traditional values and ways of life. The government along with the language policy makers should emphasize how the native culture and the target culture can be represented in a more sensible and balanced way
Higher Order Thinking Skills in English Language Teaching: The Case of Colleges of Education in Ghana
Get PDFThe teaching and learning of language has, for many years, been centered on the four language competencies- listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, in modern times, the need to train students with critical, analytical, evaluative, creative, and problem-solving skills in order to meet and deal with the complex nature of modern-day challenges and real-life issues has made the teaching and learning of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) indispensable. This study, therefore, investigates the attitude of language tutors towards the teaching of HOTS. This study has a descriptive qualitative approach. 39 English language tutors from the Colleges of Education who voluntarily availed themselves as participants were recruited for the study. Using semi-structured interviews and classroom observation as data collection instruments, the data were subjected to a thematic analysis. It is revealed that teachers perceive HOTS to be a good concept and hence use strategies such as asking open-ended questions, engaging learners in group works, classroom discussions, lecturing method, asking learners to produce and/or create their own materials and the giving of constructive feedback to implement it. Regardless of all their efforts, teachers face challenges such as incompetency, learner’s low proficiency, learner’s inability to grasp concepts, insufficient and irrelevant teaching materials, time, and financial constraints. The study, therefore, recommends that HOTS be given some more attention in language teaching in Ghana
An Analysis of Affixation Processes of Derivation and Inflection in Article with the Title “The Government of the Republic of Indonesia”
Get PDFThis study aims to analyze the derivational and inflection affixation processes in the article entitled "The Government of The Republic of Indonesia". The author also describes the affixation that occurs in sentences or words contained in the article. To make it easier to see derivational and inflectional affixations, the authors use a table to determine each affixation process found. This study explores English words that experience derivational and inflection affixation processes. The source of the data studied is a written text, so this study will use the documentation method. The writer found that there were 24 affixes, namely derivational and inflectional. Of the 24 affixes found in the articles studied, 17 affixes were given derivational affixes and 7 affixes that were affixed with inflections. From the results of the analysis that has been carried out by the researcher, it can be concluded that in the article entitled "The Government of The Republic of Indonesia", there are words that are given affixation process affixes such as derivational and inflection
Osing Dialect in Term of Place, Situation, and Consumer in Banyuwangi, East Java

Indonesia has many of variation and diversity of dialect and one of them is Osing dialect or Basa Osing in Banyuwangi, East Java. There are some of differences using Osing dialect in term of place, situation, and consumer. The form of Osing dialect based on place, situation and consumer will be displayed in this study is dialect in real environment of local people. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze Basa Osing in Banyuwangi, East Java using descriptive qualitative research. The participant of this research is local people of Osing. Collecting the data in this study is conducted by observation and interview. The structured interview is used to obtain the information from the respondent that already set the needs by researcher. The researcher observes their conversation with the local people and listen how they was talking each other. After that the research tapped the pronunciation about their conversation that carried out by the local people. The result of these observation is recorded and noted by the researcher. The findings of this study are that the use of Osing dialect varies depending on each term of place, situation, and consumer
The Phenomenon of Code Switching Used in Daily Communication by Young People in Tumbu Village, Karangasem
Get PDFThe aim of this study is to find out the types and functions of code-switching that are commonly used by young people in Tumbu Village, Karangasem in their daily communication. This research is a kind of descriptive qualitative research. This study involved young people of Tumbu village, Karangasem, Bali aged 15-25 years old. The data were collected through observation and interview, and the data were analyzed descriptively. The research findings show that there was some code-switching phenomenon that happened in Tumbu Village, Karangasem. The code-switching that commonly happened in the daily communication of young people in Tumbu Village is the code-switching between the Indonesian language and the Balinese language. However, sometimes they also use or insert English words in their daily communication. The type of code-switching that is commonly used by young people in Tumbu Village, Karangasem is intra-sentential switching, which inserts words or phrases of other languages into the basic language. Moreover, the function of code-switching that is commonly used by young people in Tumbu Village, Karangasem is the Referential function, which means that people switch the language because they were more familiar with it and easier to speak certain words in the other language than their basic language
A Critical Discourse Analysis of Song "Easy on Me" by Adele
Get PDFThe purpose of this research is to analyze how the role or attitude of the author towards a song that was created by examining the effect, judgment, and appreciation. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method by using three analytical processes proposed by Fairclough's CDA model. The data from this research are the lyrics of Adele's song entitled "Easy on Me". The findings show that Adele describes her feelings in this song explicitly by using a figure of speech. In her song, Adele conveys the effect of how worried and devastated she is when faced with the problem of her divorce. In the aspect of assessment, Adele admires nature through her own point of view, so that some of her song lyrics are interpreted using the beauty and serenity of nature. Based on appreciation, Adele assesses that divorce or separation in a relationship is the end of her journey, so she wants to give up and surrender
An Analysis of Lexical Cohesion Found in “Photograph” Song Lyrics
Get PDFThe aim of this study is to find out the type and function of lexical cohesion used in the lyrics of Ed Sheeran's song entitled "Photograph" based on the theory of lexical cohesion. This study uses a qualitative method that focuses on the type of lexical cohesion, especially repetition (anaphora and epistrophe repetition), the synonym, antonym, and collocation. The researcher used observation with note-taking techniques to collect data. The results of this study are found all the types of lexical cohesion in the song lyrics entitled "Photograph". In Reiteration, the writer found 16 repetitions (anaphora and epistrophe repetition), 2 synonyms, 5 antonyms, and 1 collocation. So, it can be deduced that the most lexical cohesion that appears in the song lyrics entitled "Photograph" is Repetition. The lexical cohesion that emerges in the lyrics of the song, will make it more harmonious and meaningful
Facilitating Students’ Speaking Task Using YouTube During Covid-19 Pandemic
Get PDFThis study investigates students' perception of the use of YouTube to facilitate undergraduate students' speaking activities. The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative research. The sampling system is done randomly and takes 40 students as a sample. The questionnaire has two parts, followed by ten questions with five answer choices using a Likert scale covering strongly disagree to strongly agree. The result of the study shows that 80% of students access YouTube because YouTube is very interesting, 75% of students say YouTube is an easy media to access, 80% of students say YouTube can be used as a learning resource (80%), and 85% of students use YouTube as a medium for doing speaking tasks. The student response to the use of YouTube as the media of facilitating students' speaking tasks is very positive, where 72% of students stated they strongly agreed if the practice of speaking through YouTube was applied, and 20% of students agreed. In general, student responses in using YouTube to facilitate students speaking activities in distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic are very positive
Ideological Underpinnings in President John Dramani Mahama’s 2013 State of the Nation Address: A Critical Discourse Analysis
Get PDFoai:ojs2.pustaka.my.id:article/1This study sets out to investigate, examine and understand the hidden ideologies and ideological structures/devices in the 2013 State of the Nation Address of President John Dramani Mahama. The study specifically aimed to (i) ascertain the ideologies embedded in the speech and (ii) investigate linguistic expressions and devices which carry these ideological colourations in the speech under review. It uses Critical Discourse Analysis as the theoretical framework to examine the role of language in creating ideology as well as the ideological structures in the speech. These hidden ideologies are created, enacted and legitimated by the application of certain linguistic devices. The researchers deem a study of this nature important as it will expose hidden motives that Ghanaian presidents cloth in language in order to manipulate their audience through their speeches in order to win and/or sustain political power. Through thematic analysis, it was revealed that Mahama projected these ideologies in his speech: ideology of positive self-representation, ideology of human value, ideology of economic difficulty, ideology of power relations and ideology of urgency. It also revealed that Mahama projects his ideologies through the following ideological discursive structures: pronouns, biblical allusion and metaphor. The study has shown that language plays a crucial role in human existence as a means of socialisation. Language has been revealed as a means of communicating ideologies and events of the world. In the tradition of CDA, this study has confirmed that text and talk have social and cultural character and that discourse functions ideologically
