Navigating challenges and strategies in implementing The Independent Curriculum: A multi-site case study of English language instruction in junior and senior high schools in Palopo
The Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka) represents a significant shift in Indonesia’s education system, promoting competency-based learning and student-centered instruction. However, its implementation has posed various challenges for English teachers, particularly in junior and senior high schools. This study explores the obstacles faced by teachers, the strategies adopted to overcome these challenges, and the impact of these strategies on student learning outcomes in five junior high schools and three senior high schools in Palopo. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with English teachers and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that teachers struggle with limited access to resources, inadequate professional training, increased workload, and student difficulties in adapting to independent learning. To address these issues, teachers implemented project-based learning, differentiated instruction, collaborative teaching, and digital learning integration, which enhanced student engagement, motivation, and critical thinking skills. However, many students, particularly in junior high schools, continued to struggle with self-directed learning due to lack of preparation for autonomous study habits. The study highlights the importance of ongoing teacher training, sufficient resource allocation, and gradual adaptation strategies to ensure effective curriculum implementation. These findings contribute to discussions on curriculum reform and English language teaching, emphasizing the need for stronger institutional support and instructional flexibility. Future research should explore longitudinal studies to assess the long-term impact of these teaching strategies
Narratives and cultural dances: Keys to the preservation of Higaunon culture
This study examines the role of narratives embedded in traditional Higaunon dances as instruments for preserving cultural identity. Grounded in recognizing indigenous peoples' rights as mandated by the Philippine Constitution and relevant cultural policies, the research aims to identify, analyze, and interpret the authenticity of selected Higaunon dances and their accompanying narratives. Using a qualitative research design with a cultural anthropological approach, the study employed field observations, interviews, and indigenous methods to gather data. The analysis focused on how specific dance movements—indak (sway), padyak (stomp), and kumpas (gesture)—function as nonverbal communication that embodies the tribe's values, beliefs, and historical memory. Findings reveal that these movements are not mere aesthetic expressions but symbolic actions grounded in the Higaunon's lived experiences and cosmology. The swaying of the hips often reflects joy, stomping produces percussive sounds that contribute to the rhythm of the ritual, and hand gestures convey complex emotions such as resistance or reverence. Each movement corresponds to a narrative thread, affirming a shared cultural identity transmitted across generations. The research concludes that Higaunon dances, accompanied by oral and written narratives, serve as a dynamic repository of indigenous knowledge. They are a creative medium through which the community safeguards its cultural heritage, asserts its identity, and sustains its traditional worldview in the face of modern influences
Translator’s subjectivity reflected in the Indonesian subtitle of Hasan Minhaj: Off with His Head
Humor translation—based on the inherent incongruity of the language and cultural aspects specific to the source language (SL)—has always presented significant challenges, but subtitling humorous content adds a level of difficulty that requires exceptional care to detail. To produce high-quality subtitling, translators/subtitlers must set the correct steps that also unconsciously reflect their subjectivity. This study elaborated on the translator’s subjectivity portrayed in the Indonesian subtitle of the Netflix Comedy Special “Hasan Minhaj: Off with His Head” by determining the translator’s approaches in translating/subtitling verbal humor, particularly in the ethnic jokes contained in the show, using Gottlieb’s (1992) Subtitling strategy. Relevance theory, proposed by Sperber & Wilson (1995), was also employed to look into the translator’s cognitive process amid the translation process. The result shows that the subtitling strategies, particularly paraphrasing and deletion, used in subtitling the ethnic jokes in the show reflected the translator’s subjectivity by conforming to the linguistic and cultural norms of the target audience, which is supported by the claim of Relevance Theory that maximizes interpretative relevance rather than the literal one. Regrettably, the translator’s subjectivity can also be a drawback, as it can lead to the loss of meaning, in this case, a humorous intent in the expression
Enhancing speaking skills through visual interpretation of condensed short stories
It could be challenging for EFL students to practice speaking. To solve this problem, fifteen EFL students enrolled in the online course. To get things moving, the teacher created a Whatsapp group as a teaching tool. To spread the word, the instructor displayed the URL for a podcast on the screen. To affect the content, the students simultaneously listen to the voice and read the transcript. They stopped listening as soon as they encountered unusual words. They must be able to pronounce words correctly and comprehend their meaning if they want to increase their vocabulary. It enhances their ability to understand what they read and hear. To please it, they tinker with their digital vocabulary. Additionally, they read aloud from the script. The students summarized the story using the podcast's images in order to improve their speaking abilities. In order to improve the students' communication abilities, the instructor asked them to debate the podcast's topic. A qualitative analysis was performed on the data while the teaching and learning process was observed. It has been found that using the podcast images to summarize the information improves students' speaking abilities. This type of finding will enable the teacher to teach the related subject more successfully. It also encourages other researchers to take comparable steps
Memes and social criticism: A semantic analysis of irony in political humor on Instagram @memecomic.id
This study aims to identify and analyze the types of irony found in political memes on the Instagram account @memecomic.id using semantic and pragmatic approaches. Memes were selected as the object of study due to their role as a popular medium for expressing social criticism in the digital era. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis techniques. The data consisted of thirty political-themed memes analyzed based on Perrine’s (1966) classification of irony: verbal, situational, and dramatic. The results indicate that situational irony is the most dominant type, appearing in sixteen memes, followed by eleven instances of verbal irony and three of dramatic irony. These findings suggest that the mismatch between expectation and reality is the most commonly used strategy to convey socio-political critique through memes. The study demonstrates that irony in memes is not merely a form of entertainment, but also a pragmatic mode of communication that reflects social tension and public dissatisfaction with political conditions in Indonesia
Rhetorical move structure of applied linguistics research abstracts across Sinta journal rankings
The scholarly publishing scene is familiar with databases where scholars can look up for journal list and rankings. The said rankings lead to the assumption that research articles from higher-ranking journals have better quality than those from lower-ranking journals. This study aims to see the correlation between journal rankings and publication quality by analyzing the rhetorical moves of abstracts from journals across Science and Technology Index (SINTA) rankings. This study utilized Hyland’s five-move model as the framework to analyze 40 research abstracts from two groups, SINTA 1 and SINTA 4 applied linguistics research abstracts. The analysis revealed that the abstracts from both journals exhibited similar usage of moves, where Introduction, Methodology and Product has high number of occurrences across the data. However, the dominant rhetorical structure pattern of the abstracts differs between the two groups. To conclude, while SINTA rankings do not affect the realization of the moves, it seems to impact the rhetorical structure of the abstracts to a degree. This implies that journals across different SINTA indexes may apply different criteria for the research articles they publish
Perceptions of the flipped classroom model in EFL listening instruction: Tutor experiences and implications for teacher education
This study investigates the perceptions of an EFL tutor at an Indonesian university regarding the flipped classroom model’s effectiveness in enhancing listening skills and its implications for teacher education programs. The flipped classroom, which moves lecture-based instruction outside the classroom and prioritizes interactive in-class activities, was implemented in two listening classes over ten weeks. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through a semi-structured interview and analyzed thematically to address two key research questions. The findings reveal that the flipped classroom model fosters student preparedness, engagement, and listening comprehension by integrating pre-class multimedia sources and interactive in-class activities. Teacher trainees as students exhibited improved critical listening skills, such as recognizing nuances in tone and context, alongside greater confidence during discussions. Challenges such as uneven accountability, time management, and technological limitations were mitigated through adaptive strategies like structured pre-class tasks and targeted feedback. Furthermore, the tutor’s experiences highlight the model’s potential for shaping EFL teacher education. By engaging with the flipped approach, teacher trainees can develop essential skills for fostering active learning and differentiated instruction in their future classrooms. The study underscores the need for teacher education programs to integrate flipped classroom methodologies, equipping instructors with practical strategies to support learner autonomy and engagement. While the findings underscore the flipped classroom’s transformative potential, the study is limited by its focus on a single participant. Future research should involve a broader range of educators and longitudinal analyses to assess the model’s long-term impact. These insights contribute to EFL education by advocating for innovative, student-centered pedagogies
Batbat Hi Udan: A socio-cultural analysis
This study aims to explore the activities, beliefs, and customs reflected in the novel Batbat Hi Udan and to understand how these aspects are still practiced and showcased by the Bukidnon tribe in contemporary times. The research seeks to answer the following questions: What activities, beliefs, and customs are depicted in the novel? How does the tribe continue to display these practices today? To achieve this, the study employed a socio-cultural analysis, which allowed for a deeper understanding of the connection between the literary work and the cultural traditions of the Bukidnon people. The study found that the activities, beliefs, and customs portrayed in Batbat Hi Udan are still alive and relevant in the current practices of the Bukidnon tribe, highlighting the tribe's strong commitment to preserving their cultural heritage. These traditions continue to be valued and passed down through generations, demonstrating literature's vital role in preserving culture. Based on these findings, the study recommends further examination of other Bukidnon literary works to enrich the knowledge of the diverse cultural practices of various tribes and to emphasize the richness of the Bukidnon tribe's cultural legacy. Through this research, it becomes evident that literature is essential in sustaining and transmitting cultural values to future generations, ensuring that the tribe's identity and customs remain intact
The effectiveness of climate crisis representation in the ‘Save the Arctic’ campaign through a linguistic semiotics approach
Climate change is an urgent global issue with significant impacts on the survival of the earth, one of which can be seen in the environmental crisis in the Arctic region. Rising global temperatures, melting ice, and the exploitation of natural resources have triggered various environmental movements, including Greenpeace's ‘Save the Arctic’ campaign. This campaign employs visual and linguistic strategies to create a persuasive and ideological representation of the climate crisis. This study aims to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the campaign from an environmental communication perspective using a linguistic semiotic approach. The research method used is qualitative, involving an analysis of campaign materials such as posters, slogans, videos, and Greenpeace's social media content. Data is analysed by identifying linguistic and visual signs and interpreting the ideological constructions behind the campaign messages. The findings reveal that Greenpeace's campaign successfully attracts global attention through emotional symbols and critical narratives, but still faces challenges in reaching sceptical groups and limitations in achieving concrete policy impacts. These findings provide important insights into the effectiveness of climate crisis representation in environmental campaigns and their contribution to shaping public awareness
The interpretation study in English applied linguistics Research Article Discussions (RADs) in reputable journals
Since studies on rhetorical structures of research article discussions (RADs) have received scholarly attention from many linguistics scholars, interpreting research findings becomes one of the important linguistic aspects that needs to be investigated for knowledge expansion in research. However, although some scholars have studied rhetorical moves in RADs, none of them focus on interpretation as a single focus. As a result, interpretation still leaves several questions that need further analysis. After understanding this critical gap, this study intends to address three important purposes: the role of interpretation in applied linguistics Research Article Discussions (RADs) in international reputable journals, the elements that authors interpret, and rhetorical strategies for interpretation. To realize these purposes, this study used a genre-based approach by conducting top-down and bottom-up approaches for the analysis. Then, it employed a mixed-method to report the analysis results. The findings revealed that interpretation is quasi-obligatory in RADs. Authors interpret their research findings and their discussion. They employed two rhetorical strategies to realize interpretation as presented further in the results section. These findings have implications to extend knowledge in the literature regarding interpretation knowledge and create a contribution to provide understanding for students and novice authors
