    Translation strategy of Indonesian-English address terms in Perempuan Tanah Jahanam subtitles

    The phenomenon of translating address terms in Indonesian film subtitles presents challenges in transferring the cultural meaning embedded in Indonesian into English. This study aims to analyze the translation strategies of address terms in the subtitles of the film Perempuan Tanah Jahanam, which is streamed on the Netflix platform. A descriptive qualitative approach is used to depict the translation strategies, focusing on the subtitle translation as the product. The data used consists of address terms in Indonesian and their English translations. Data collection is carried out through observation and note-taking of the address terms appearing in the film. The data analysis technique employed is the interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show six translation strategies based on Baker's (2018) framework: omission, paraphrase with related words, borrowing words, using more neutral words, cultural substitution, and paraphrase with unrelated words. The study reveals that the translator must consider cultural aspects and social context when selecting translation strategies. The dominance of omission and paraphrase with related words indicates that readability and fluency in the subtitles are prioritized, which is important in film translation

    English student’s issue on constructing tree diagram sentences

    This research aims to identify the key difficulties students face and develop strategies to enhance their understanding of tree diagrams. The purpose of this research is to identify the specific difficulties students encounter when understanding and constructing tree diagrams and to develop recommendations for improving teaching practices based on the analysis results. The researcher focuses on the discussion at the class to obtain qualitative insights into students’ experiences and challenges in constructing the tree diagram, gather the data on student’s answers on the test, and assess the accuracy of students' tree diagrams and identify common errors from collected student work samples. The results of this study revealed that English language students make a range of errors when constructing and interpreting syntactic tree diagrams. These errors were classified into five main categories: hierarchical misplacement, grammatical mislabeling, incorrect phrase segmentation, visual representation issues, and task completion problems

    Indonesian and English sentence patterns: A contrastive syntactic perspective

    In learning a foreign language, comprehending similarities and differences between the source language and the target language is crucial to become proficient in the target language. This scientifically can be done by contrasting the two languages. This research aims to contrast two languages, Indonesian language as the source language and English language as the target language. This study contrasts Indonesian and English by examining simple declarative sentence patterns, with the aim of outlining their similarities and differences. The scope of the investigation is limited to the comparison of simple declarative sentence patterns in both languages. The primary objective of this study is to identify and describe the similarities and differences in simple declarative constructions across the two linguistic systems. The Contrastive Analysis method is used to contrast the patterns of sentence structure in both languages. Declarative sentences are categorized into transitive, ditransitive, intransitive, nominal, adjectival, prepositional, and numeral patterns. The result of this study reveals that Indonesian and English share declarative patterns in transitive, ditransitive, and intransitive forms, while differing in nominal, adjectival, prepositional, and numeral types. Simple declarative sentences in Indonesian and English share several structural patterns in transitive, ditransitive, and intransitive constructions. However, Indonesian also allows nominal, adjectival, prepositional, and numeral declarative sentences, which employ complements as predicates and are not found in English. Conversely, English exhibits patterns absent in Indonesian; those formed with intensive verbs (to be) functioning as the predicate

    The emergence of the Fufufafa account in Indonesian politics has garnered significant public attention, sparking a range of opinions regarding its impact on political dynamics in social media. This study aims to analyze the framing of news coverage surrounding the Fufufafa account as reported by PikiranRakyat.com. Using a qualitative approach and framing analysis technique based on Robert M. Entman’s model, the research examines four key elements: problem definition, cause of the problem, moral judgment, and proposed solutions. The data for this study were derived from three articles published by PikiranRakyat.com between September and November 2024. The findings reveal that PikiranRakyat.com predominantly highlighted the negative aspects of the Fufufafa account, portraying it as a source of political propaganda in Indonesia. The study recommends the implementation of stricter regulations on social media activities like Fufufafa to prevent provocations that could trigger spontaneous actions within the public. Furthermore, it calls for the government to take immediate, decisive action to address the issue, in order to preserve public trust and demonstrate its commitment to political ethics in Indonesia

    A study of thesis statements in IELTS essay writings band 7

    Although studies on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) have received more scholarly attention, including in essay writings, studies focusing on thesis statements are hardly found in the literature. In contrast, the roles of thesis statements are pivotal in writing essays, not only for creating coherences of content structures but also for expanding the creativity of writing. By understanding this need, this study intends to focus on analyzing how thesis statements are constructed in IELTS essay writings band seven. This study used a genre-based approach for analyzing 20 essay writings on band seven as corpus analyses. The results showed that the role of a thesis statement is obligatory in this study, and its positions are located in the last sentence of the first paragraph of each essay. Its length, types of sentences, and the purposes of thesis statements are further reported in the results section and interpreted in the discussion section. These findings imply that writing an IELTS essay must contain thesis statements because its appearance is not only to help test takers control their ideas for cohesive content but also to help examiners examine the structural contents of the essay

    Thai and Indonesian teachers’ efforts and challenges in facilitating intercultural communication in teaching English: A comparative study

    This study aims to find out what intercultural communication efforts and problems faced by English teachers in facilitating intercultural communication in Thailand and Indonesia. The researcher used a qualitative approach with a comparative research type. The researcher used three methods namely observation, interview, document analysis. The results revealed that there are six efforts used in facilitating intercultural communication, namely respecting cultural differences with kindness, appreciating cultural differences based on an understanding of cultural diversity, dedication to increasing respecting, ability to deal with contradictions, demonstrating a good attitude, and having insightful knowledge. Meanwhile, the challenges faced by teachers in facilitating intercultural communication are lack of understanding, misunderstanding, emotional reactions and actions, individual level, and lack of understanding

    Contrastive rhetoric analysis of entertainment headlines in Philippine & American newspapers

    This study presents a contrastive rhetoric analysis of entertainment headlines from major Philippine and American newspapers, focusing on the linguistic structures and cultural implications of verbal and nonverbal clauses. Using a qualitative-descriptive-analytic approach, the research examines headlines from the Manila Bulletin, Philippine Daily Inquirer, and The Philippine Star, alongside those from The New York Times, The New York Post, and The Washington Times. The analysis identifies key differences in how Filipino and American media use finite and nonfinite verbal clauses, as well as pre-modified, post-modified, and non-modified nonverbal clauses, to frame events and public figures. Additionally, the study explores presupposition triggers in the headlines, revealing how cultural values shape media discourse in both countries. Filipino headlines often emphasize social harmony, personal narratives, and community engagement, reflecting the collective nature of Filipino society. In contrast, American headlines focus on legal processes, individual accountability, and social justice, mirroring the country's emphasis on individualism and public discourse on issues of race and power dynamics. The findings highlight the significant role of media in reflecting and shaping cultural values, offering insights for scholars, educators, and media practitioners. The study concludes with recommendations for future research, language education, and news writing, emphasizing the need for cultural competence in media to ensure accurate and respectful representation of events and individuals across diverse cultural contexts

    Analysis of American slang words in Whiplash movie

    This paper examines the linguistic and functional characteristics of American slang within the film script of Whiplash (2014), written by Damien Chazelle. It categorizes slang based on linguistic features and discusses their roles in portraying character relationship, emotional intensity, and group-based identity in a high-pressure music academy setting. The study finds that slang in Whiplash functions not just as informal language, but as a purposeful communicative strategy. It facilitates peer interaction, expresses strong emotion, and strengthen group identity, while also serving as a tool for social division, pressure, and control. These expressions reflect a range of linguistic features – such as ellipsis, rhythm, creativity, vulgarity, and ephemerality – that mirror the demanding environment of competitive jazz. Ultimately, the film demonstrates how slang can function as both a bonding mechanism and a form of domination, highlighting the powerful relationship between language, power, and identity

    Challenges in the language shift: EMI implementation in public universities of Bangladesh

    The study focuses on investigating the challenges that students face when shifting to English Medium Instruction (EMI) from Bangla or any other medium of instruction (MOI), the reasons behind these challenges, and the impact it has on students. The study was conducted using a mixed-method design, including questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. The data was collected from 180 students and 8 teachers of the EMI program. The study found that a majority of the students coming to the EMI program came from Bangla-medium schools and colleges, and as a result, they face simultaneous challenges of mastering academic content as well as adapting to a new instruction language. While they show greater proficiency in receptive skills (listening and reading), they exhibit lower proficiency in productive skills, especially when it comes to oral communication using English. The study identified reasons like lack of preparatory language support, insufficient teacher training, failure to address students' fear of being judged, and the absence of clear policy guidelines for EMI as key impediments to successful EMI implementation. The study suggested developing a comprehensive EMI framework and enhancing language support mechanisms to ensure a supportive and interactive classroom to facilitate a smooth transition for the students coming from non-English medium backgrounds

    Resistance of Indonesian cultural identity translation into English in Imperfect The Series

    In translation practice, translators have the option to not translate or to retain certain terms from the source language. This action is known as a form of resistance in translation, especially when dealing with cultural elements that have no equivalents. This study aims to analyze resistance in the translation of Indonesian cultural identity into English in Imperfect The Series. The data consists of speech units from the Indonesian dialogue (source text) and their English subtitle equivalents (target text), taken from all episodes of the first season available on the official WeTV platform. The research employs a qualitative approach using descriptive, comparative, and interpretative methods. Data collection techniques include observation and note-taking. Data analysis uses an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal the presence of translation resistance in various cultural categories, such as material, social, ecological, administrative, and religious. Forms of resistance include retaining original terms, not translating names of places or characters, and not adapting culturally untranslatable expressions. Factors contributing to translation resistance include the absence of cultural equivalents, efforts to preserve local culture, sensitivity to cultural norms, the translator’s limited cultural knowledge, the existence of untranslatable elements, and the principle of linguistic economy in subtitle writing. The implication is that translation is not merely a linguistic act, but also an ideological and cultural one in introducing national identity to the world
