Branchiostegus sanae, a new species of deepwater tilefish (Eupercaria, Branchiostegidae) from the South China Sea
A new species of deepwater tilefish, Branchiostegus sanae sp. nov., is described based on five specimens collected from the area between the Xisha Islands and Hainan Island, China. This species can be distinguished from congeners by its unique cheek marker and a combination of characteristics. Among the tilefish species known to be distributed in the South China Sea, this species is the only one with vertical stripes on the body. Based on the COI, CytB, and 12S sequences, a maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree shows that the B. sanae sp. nov. forms a separate clade and is the sister group to the clade consisting of B. sawakinensis, B. albus, B. argentatus, B. biendong, B. japonicus, B. auratus, and B. okinawaensis. A key to the genus Branchiostegus is also compiled
Exploring factors affecting hemodialysis patients’ adherence in Iraqi patients: a cross-sectional study
Different factors are associated with hemodialysis patients’ adherence to their complex therapeutic regimen. This study assessed the association between different patient characteristics, including health literacy and adherence levels. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Dialysis Center of Baghdad Medical City, Baghdad, Iraq, and included 72 end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on maintenance hemodialysis. The adherence level was assessed using a self-reported end-stage renal disease adherence questionnaire (ESRD-AQ). This study identified one patient-related factor (being male) and one disease-related factor (having a higher number of dialysis sessions per week) to be associated with non-adherence behavior among Iraqi hemodialysis patients, and the number of dialysis sessions per week was found to be an independent predictor in multivariate analysis. In conclusion, it is essential to recognize and address these factors to enhance patients’ experiences with their disease and healthcare system and design tailored interventions to support patients’ adherence and outcomes
Wild bee diversity of the National Park of the Semois Valley (Belgium)
Wild bees are essential pollinators, yet their decline due to human activities threatens ecosystem stability. Protecting these pollinators requires a detailed understanding of both their diversity and distribution. In Belgium, the recently-established Semois Valley National Park (SVNP) is located in a region with limited bee sampling data and this study aims to identify the habitats most suitable to bees, especially for threatened species.Over five months, we surveyed 32 sites and collected a total of 1,119 specimens belonging to 120 bee species. Twenty-two of the observed species are listed as threatened in Belgium according to the last Red List published in 2019 for the country, four of them being Critically Endangered. Our findings indicate that mesic grasslands support the highest species diversity, as well as the highest number of threatened species. Our results underscore the need for conservation efforts aimed at maintaining diversity and species richness in this region. Effective biodiversity preservation will require enhanced habitat management and strategies tailored to bee species' ecological requirements
Three novel species and a new record of Pleosporales (Didymellaceae, Roussoellaceae) from China
We are investigating saprobic Ascomycota in Guizhou Province, China. Fungal specimens collected from dead wood were identified based on morphological characteristics and multi-gene phylogenetic analyses of ITS, SSU, LSU, β-tubulin, ef1-α, and rpb2 sequence data. Three novel species, Neoroussoella guizhouensis, Roussoella guizhouensis, and Xenodidymella guizhouensis, are introduced, along with one new geographical record, Xenoroussoella triseptata. This study contributes to our understanding of the diversity of Ascomycota in Guizhou Province and the classification in Roussoellaceae
Five new epiphytic species of Vishniacozyma (Bulleribasidiaceae, Tremellales) from China
The genus Vishniacozyma, globally distributed, encompasses numerous epiphytic and endophytic species. In this study, five new species are proposed to accommodate eleven yeast strains isolated from leaves of different plants: V. diospyri sp. nov. (holotype CICC 33574T), V. guiyangensis sp. nov. (holotype CICC 33569T), V. pingtangensis sp. nov. (holotype CICC 33596T), V. eriobotryae sp. nov. (holotype GDMCC 2.312T), and V. tianchiensis sp. nov. (holotype CICC 33617T) using phenotypic and phylogenetic characters. Phylogenetic analysis was based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene. Illustrations and descriptions of these five taxa are provided, along with comparative analyses with closely related species within the genus. This research highlights the considerable diversity of Vishniacozyma species in China and contributes valuable data for future investigations in fungal systematics and evolution
Checklist of the apoid wasps (Hymenoptera, Apoidea excluding Anthophila) of Canada, Alaska and Greenland
The present checklist is the product of a critical taxonomic review of the Canadian/Alaskan fauna during the previous two decades. As of December 2024, 531 described species in 84 genera of apoid wasps (Ammoplanidae, Ampulicidae, Astatidae, Bembicidae, Crabronidae, Mellinidae, Pemphredonidae, Philanthidae, Psenidae, Sphecidae) are recorded from Canada and Alaska. Seventy species and two genera (Psammaletes Pate and Larra Fabricius) are newly recorded from the area, including eight accidentally introduced species and three naturally Holarctic species. Compared to the previous Catalog of Hymenoptera in America north of Mexico (Krombein 1979) the number of recorded species in Canada and Alaska has increased by 124% and the number of genera by 42%. The genera Foxia Ashmead and Pluto Pate are also recorded for the first time, but they are not included in the checklist because their species remain either unidentified or undescribed. A total of 23 species are non-native and have been introduced accidentally from other biogeographic regions. Crabro dietrichi R. Bohart is newly recognized as the only species endemic to the area of the checklist (restricted to Prince Edward Island, Canada). A total of 2109 provincial, territorial and Alaskan records are included, 705 of which (33.4%) are new. Records are based on verified material from 22 different collections, only 1.6% rely exclusively on data in the literature. The Alaskan fauna consists of 63 species (31 new records) in 24 genera (eight new records) and seven families, all of which are also known from Canada. No apoid wasps have been found in Greenland. The regions with the most diverse faunas are Alberta (326 species, 64 genera), Ontario (294 spp., 71 genera), British Columbia (292 spp., 64 genera) and Saskatchewan (248 spp., 58 genera). The highest number of new records are from Alberta (124 spp.), Saskatchewan (117 spp.), Manitoba (113 spp.) and New Brunswick (60 spp.). The greatest numbers of species exclusive to one political area within Canada and Alaska are recorded from British Columbia (63 spp.) and Ontario (44 spp.). In order to clarify species concepts, type material or images of types of 57 nominal species were examined. This led to 25 taxonomic changes. Eight synonyms are reinstated as valid species: Gorytes decorus Fox, sp. restit., Nysson freyigessneri Handlirsch, sp. restit., Lindenius errans (Fox), sp. restit., Oxybelus pacificus (Rohwer), sp. restit., Diodontus antennatus (Mickel), sp. restit. (extralimital to the area of the checklist), D. nigritus Fox, sp. restit. and Pemphredon bipartior Fox, sp. restit. Diodontus beulahensis (Rohwer), sp. restit. (extralimital to the area of the checklist) is a suspected synonym of D. americanus Packard. Fourteen new or revised synonymies are proposed: Crabro canningsi Finnamore, syn. nov. = C. maeklini Morawitz, Crossocerus eriogoni (Rohwer), syn. nov. = C. minimus (Packard), Solierella foxii (Viereck, 1906; nec 1902) (preoccupied), syn. rev. = S. mammillata Buck, nom. nov.; Diodontus gillettei Fox, syn. nov., D. rugosus Fox, syn. nov., D. florissantensis Rohwer, syn. rev., D. bidentatus Rohwer, syn. nov., D. siouxensis (Mickel), syn. nov., and D. striatus (Mickel), syn. nov. are all = D. americanus; D. vallicolae Rohwer, syn. nov., D. vallicolae salicis Rohwer, syn. rev., D. maestus (Mickel), syn. rev. and D. ater (Mickel), syn. rev. are all = D. nigritus Fox; Mimesa gregaria (Fox), syn. nov. = M. unicincta Cresson. Two new replacement names are proposed for preoccupied names: Solierella mammillata Buck, nom. nov. (for Niteliopsis foxii Viereck, 1906) and Mimesa curta Pulawski & Buck, nom. nov. (for Psen simplex Malloch, 1933). In an appendix, taxonomic changes and revised species concepts of 33 species or species complexes are briefly explained in order to clarify their status and avoid confusion. The biogeography of Canadian and Alaskan species is discussed, including Holarctic species and species shared with other biogeographic regions, distribution patterns within the Nearctic region, endemism, remarkable new records, geographic prevalence of nesting habits, distribution patterns and introduction timelines of introduced species, as well as faunal change. Diodontus minutus (Fabricius) is newly recognized as an introduced species from the Palearctic region despite first being discovered in North America in 1934. Based on literature data and observations on the internet platform iNaturalist.org, we document recent, rapid range expansions in ten native species of Sphecidae, Philanthidae and Bembicidae. These trends are likely caused by climate change and are projected to further increase apoid wasp diversity in Canada in the future. Lastly, we discuss the important contribution citizen science is making to faunistic wasp research through iNaturalist and other collaborative websites
Predation of Ambystoma altamirani (Caudata, Ambystomatidae) by Thamnophis scaliger (Squamata, Colubridae) and Crotalus triseriatus (Squamata, Viperidae) in Nevado de Toluca Volcano, Central Mexico
This study reports two notable predation events involving Thamnophis scaliger (Jan 1863) and Crotalus triseriatus (Wagler 1830), which target Ambystoma altamirani (Dugès 1895), a critically endangered salamander species endemic to high-altitude streams in central Mexico. In the first event, T. scaliger was observed to capture and consume A. altamirani by removing the salamander from its aquatic habitat and consuming it on land – a behavior that underscores the adaptability of the snake to handling aquatic prey. In the second instance, C. triseriatus exhibited attempted predation in a montane stream, swimming in pursuit of the salamander but ultimately failing to capture it. These observations provide critical insights into predator–prey dynamics in montane ecosystems, highlighting the ecological pressures faced by A. altamirani. Furthermore, the documentation of these events expands our understanding of the feeding behaviors of T. scaliger and C. triseriatus, emphasizing their potential impact on vulnerable amphibian populations. This study underscores the necessity of further ecological research to assess the frequency and ecological consequences of such interactions, as well as their implications for the conservation of endangered amphibians in high-altitude habitats
First record of Selaginella from Miocene amber
Among extant lycophytes, Selaginella (Selaginellaceae, spike mosses) is the most species-rich genus, with over 700 described species. The evolutionary history of this lycophyte genus dates back to the Carboniferous or even Devonian; however, amber-preserved Selaginella fossils were previously only described from mid-Cretaceous amber from Myanmar. Here, we report the first fossil from Miocene Dominican amber attributable to Selaginella based on macromorphological characters and compare the fossil morphology to extant species of the genus. Selaginella jorelisiae sp. nov. can be identified based on the presence of symmetric ovate dorsal trophophylls with scattered teeth or cilia at the margins and an aristate apex, and ventral elliptic trophophylls with an apiculate apex and rounded base, with cilia on the acroscopic proximal margin and teeth all along the rest of the margin. Fossil and subfossil Selaginella representatives from the Greater Antilles have been described based on middle Oligocene, Pleistocene, and Holocene microspores or megaspores. Selaginella jorelisiae fills a gap in the local fossil record as it represents the first evidence of Selaginellaceae from the Miocene of these islands. While the previously discovered rich cryptogamic diversity from Dominican amber is considered to represent epiphytic communities, S. jorelisiae was most likely a component of the herbaceous layer of these humid tropical forests
Expanding the geographic distribution of Arcyria marginoundulata Nann.-Bremek. & Y. Yamam. (Myxomycetes): first record from South America
Arcyria marginoundulata Nann.-Bremek. & Y. Yamam. is recorded for the first time in South America from collections made in areas of Cerrado, also known as the Brazilian Savanna. This species has a restricted occurrence in Latin America, where it has been found in Mexico, Panama, and now Brazil, with all obtained from moist chamber cultures. In addition to updating the distribution of this species, we describe a variation in its natural grayish-white color to an orange hue for reasons yet to be defined
