    Johnius javaensis, a new species of croaker (Acanthuriformes, Sciaenidae) from the southern coast of Java, Indonesia

    In this study, we describe a newly recognized croaker (Sciaenidae), Johnius javaensis sp. nov. based on five specimens (87–121 mm in standard length) from the southern coast of Java, Indonesia. Specifically, taxonomic reassessment of sciaenids collected from fish markets on the islands of Java, Bali, and Lombok of Indonesia has revealed that specimens previously identified as Johnius heterolepis represent this new species. Johnius javaensis sp. nov. is characterized by five vesicular mental barbels on the chin, 30–32 dorsal-fin rays, seven or eight scale rows below the lateral line; 11 or 12 lower gill rakers, 11 or 12 swim-bladder appendages, and ventral margin of the sagitta head expanded into a distinct convexity. Historically, four Johnius species (J. amblycephalus, J. fuscolineatus, J. macropterus and J. mannarensis) were reported to have one mental barbel on the chin. The new species is readily distinguished from all other 33 described Johnius species by possessing five vesicular mental barbels on the chin. A phylogenetic analysis of 21 Johnius species based on the 521-bp COI gene confirms that the new species is placed as a sister species of J. macropterus, based on an average of dissimilarity 8.16%

    In this study, a new species, Leptobrachella kungfu sp. nov., from Foshan City, central Guangdong Province, China, is described based on a combination of molecular and morphological data. Phylogenetically, the new species is closely related to L. yunkaiensis from western Guangdong Province and can be distinguished from all congeners by a combination of discrete morphological characters. A key to the species of this genus from Guangdong and a distribution map are provided to support further regional research and conservation

    The symphylans from Chongqing, Southwest China were investigated and studied for the first time. Four new species of the genus Symphylella, S. obtusa sp. nov., S. yintiaolingensis sp. nov., S. flabella sp. nov., and S. micropora sp. nov., are identified and described. They were compared with similar species in detail. The DNA barcodes for all new species were sequenced and analyzed together with other congeners and the genetic distance analysis further support our morphological determination. In addition, two groups, the isabellae group and oligosetosa group, of the genus Symphylella are proposed based on the pattern of inserted setae on the tergal processes, and their respective species are listed

    Pteragogus flagellifer (Valenciennes, 1839), Cocktail Wrasse, is recorded from Taiwan based on a single specimen. Although this species has previously been recorded in Taiwanese literature, we found all the previous records to be based on misidentifications. Therefore, our specimen represents the first reliable record from Taiwan and fills the distribution gap of this species between the Philippines and Japan. A checklist of Pteragogus Peters, 1855 recorded from Taiwan is provided and discussed. A key to species of Pteragogus from the northwestern Pacific Ocean is also provided

    The ongoing spread of the Asian date mussel (Arcuatula senhousia) within the French Atlantic coast: colonisation dynamics and associated drivers in a historically invaded ecosystem (Arcachon Bay)

    Arcuatula senhousia is a non-indigenous species first observed in Arcachon Bay in 2002. At that time, the species’ distribution was restricted to the northern part of this coastal lagoon. During the following 7–8 years, the species also started to colonise its south-eastern parts. Then, two surveys conducted in 2018 and 2021 showed that the species was observed over most of the investigated tidal flats within the lagoon. Between those two periods, there was a threefold increase in both frequencies of occurrence and average densities. The highest average densities and frequencies were observed in areas colonised in 2002. It suggests that this area is either the main area of introduction/settlement for the species or the area where it could find the most suitable ecological conditions. However, the use of Species Distribution Modelling showed that, considering habitat features, most of the intertidal flats in Arcachon Bay were a highly suitable habitat for A. senhousia. Further colonisation of the lagoon during the coming years appears very likely. The study of its habitat in this area suggested that the presence of meadows favoured the settlement of A. senhousia individuals. Furthermore, lower bottom current velocity and the erosion potential it induces seemed to be the principal environmental factors driving the distribution pattern of this species within the bay. However, other factors that could regulate the spread of A. senhousia must be considered. Understanding the dynamics of A. senhousia colonisation and identifying its drivers aimed to characterise possible areas to be colonised by this species. This is a crucial point in determining how to manage its distribution and assess the risk of spreading within other ecosystems

    During a study conducted on the helminth fauna of fishes in the middle Munim River Basin, Maranhão State, northeastern Brazil, a new species of Sciadicleithrum, S. anapurusensis sp. nov., is reported from the gills of Saxatilia brasiliensis (Bloch, 1792), a cichlid endemic to the Northeast region of Brazil. In addition, a known species, Sciadicleithrum araguariensis Paschoal, Scholz, Tavares-Dias & Luque, 2016, was recovered from the same host and is redescribed here, providing new morphological and biogeographical data. Sciadicleithrum anapurusensis sp. nov. differs from all congeneric species in the general morphology of sclerotized structures (anchors, bars, vagina, accessory piece, and the number of MCO rings), being mainly characterized by the bifurcated accessory piece with unequal branches at the distal portion, with a subterminal thin projection and a hook-shaped terminal end. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of carrying out comparable surveys on different host species in order to increase the knowledge on monopisthocotylan parasites of fishes in this area. Furthermore, the finding of two congeneric species in the same host species reinforces the host specificity of Sciadicleithrum species to cichlid hosts

    Three new species of Mycena sect. Calodontes (Mycenaceae, Agaricales) from Northeastern China

    Mycena sect. Calodontes is a large section within the genus Mycena, with 44 species described worldwide. The section is well characterized by relatively large basidiomata, typically growing on the humus layer of coniferous or coniferous-broadleaved mixed forests. Only 19 species of sect. Calodontes have been previously recorded in China, more than half of sect. Calodontes species are distributed in east and north regions, but also distributed in west and south regions. Based on 8 specimens collected from Heilongjiang and Jilin Province, 3 novel species are formally described: M. brunneocystidiata sp. nov., M. roseopurpurea sp. nov., and M. rubrofusca sp. nov. Mycena brunneocystidiata is distinguished by purple-brown to brown pileus, brown lamellae margins, and cystidia with brown contents. Mycena roseopurpurea is characterized by the pileus with brownish center, white lamellae margins, and colorless, fusiform cystidia. Mycena rubrofusca is distinguished by brownish pileus, white lamellae margins, and colorless, utriform cystidia. Detailed morphological descriptions, high-resolution habitat photographs, line drawings, and comparison with closely related taxa are provided for the new species. A combined phylogenetic analysis was conducted, based on a multi-locus (ITS+RPB1+tef1-α) dataset under Bayesian Inference (BI) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) analyses. The morphological data and the results of the phylogenetic analyses support the recognition of the 3 new species. A key to the 20 species currently known species of sect. Calodontes in China is also provided

    A ‘little dragon’ from Kunming City: a new green pit viper from Yunnan Province, China (Squamata, Viperidae, Trimeresurus)

    A new species of the genus Trimeresurus Lacépède is described from Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China, based on an integrative analysis of morphological and molecular data. The new species, Trimeresurus loong sp. nov., is assigned to the subgenus Viridovipera Malhotra & Thorpe and can be distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: the first supralabial completely separated from the nasal scale; a short and spinose hemipenis; moderate adult body size; dorsal scales in 19 (21 or 23)-19-15 rows; 150–151 ventral scales in males, and 157–158 in females; 67–68 subcaudals in males, and 57–64 in females; and distinct body color patterns. Molecular analyses based on the mitochondrial 16S, cyt b, and ND4 gene fragments indicate that Trimeresurus loong sp. nov. is genetically divergent from all currently recognized congeners, showing uncorrected p-distances ranging from 6.7–11.2% in cyt b and 6.1–8.3% in ND4. The discovery of this species brings the total number of recognized Trimeresurus species to 57, including nine recorded from Yunnan Province, further emphasizing the complex topography and exceptional level of endemism
