Analyzing the Imposition of Colonial Culture: The Case of French Colonial Education in Senegal
This paper analyzes the implications of the implementation of colonial education through a focus on French West Africa, specifically Senegal. Through analyzing works regarding to colonial and post-colonial era, this paper works to understand how French colonial education systems have impacted education in Senegal. It provides background on French colonialism and the Senegalese education system while exploring and comparing both Anglophone and Francophone works to identify how the literature can work together to further research in the field
Exploring the Influence of Female Mate Choice Genetics on Male Mate Preferences in Bicyclus anynana
Mate preferences often appear differently across species and sexes, and this preference variation may be associated with genetic variation. For preferences that are genetically determined, the region of the genome that determines mate preference in one sex may also impact the preference of behavior of the other sex. To assess the genetic relationship between female mate choice and male mate preferences, we used the butterfly Bicyclus anynana. Having developed a selection line bred for female preference for four dorsal forewing spotted males, instead of the wild-type (WT) female preference for two dorsal forewing spotted males, we set out to determine if male preferences are also shifted in this selection line. We assess WT and selection line male preference for WT versus selection line females, to determine if selecting for female preference for 4-spotted males has a pleiotropic effect on male preference for WT females. Preliminary data suggest that both WT and selection line males may prefer WT females over selection line females. This finding suggests that either pleiotropic effects of the preference for 4-spot locus, or inbreeding, may be influencing female attractiveness in this species
Thermal Characterization of 3D Printing Materials for Increasing Insulation Potential and Practicality
This study served as an exploration into the possible existence of a correlation between the infill lattice structure of a 3D printed wall section and the thermal performance of that sample as characterized by thermal conductivity measured in units of Watts per meter Kelvin. With the continual increase in the practicality, fidelity, and applicable fields of additive manufacturing, namely FDM 3D printing, research on specific print characteristics and their effects on the material and thermal characteristics of the part in question is steadily becoming more commonplace. Although the thermal conductivity of 3D printed wall sections as a function of infill density in various structures has been previously characterized, the effects of the variation of those infill structures has not. This study aimed to potentially characterize the thermal performance of 3D printed wall sections as it relates to the infill lattice structure which is selected during the slicing stage of FDM additive manufacturing. In order to accomplish this, 3 different infill structures were selected and 3 thicknesses of each was manufactured using a BambuLabs P1S 3D printer. The thermal conductivity of these samples was tested using a setup based on the ASTM D5470 standard. This standard utilizes the assumptions of steady-state, one-dimensional heat conduction and uses Fourier’s Law for data analysis. Temperature gradients are measured across conductive metal meter bars with a sample sandwiched between. These gradients are extrapolated to calculate sample surface temperatures, which can be used to find the thermal conductivity of the sample in conjunction with the calculated heat flux through the meter bars. This standard is applicable for elastic materials that do not experience significant deformations under loads, such as most standard 3D printing filaments. The expected range of conductivities for the samples was 0.14-0.21 W/m*K, and the resulting range calculated from the data acquired during testing was 0.220-0.402. The results did indicate that the conductivities of the samples printed with Archimedean Chord infill were generally increased compared to the baseline. To verify this, a single factor ANOVA test was performed, which examines the discrepancies between multiple groups of data and compares it to the discrepancies within the data points of the groups themselves. If the differences between the groups are large compared to the intragroup differences, then the differences are declared statistically significant. This significance is measured by a P value and is satisfied if the value is less than 0.05. The results of this study generated a P value of 0.27, which indicates that the potential correlation is likely the result of simple probability rather than the effects of the independent variable (infill lattice structure). Nevertheless, this study does serve as a sound foundation for the development of more accurate and advanced procedures for exploring this relationship. More testing is absolutely required to verify or disprove this relationship, and continued efforts towards these findings will only advance the body of knowledge on additive manufacturing as a whole
Medical Advancements in Type One Diabetes Management Methods: An Expanded Literature Review
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by either a lack of insulin or an insulin sensitivity in the body resulting in an increased blood glucose level. Diabetes can be broken up into two types: type one and type two. Type one diabetes is an autoimmune condition caused by the destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This results in a complete lack of insulin, leading to hyperglycemia. On the contrary, type two diabetes is a condition specified by an acquired sensitivity to insulin over time also resulting in hyperglycemia. There is no cure, but those with diabetes require treatment in order to manage their disease. The style of treatment is different between type one and type two diabetes, and even further, diabetics will have an individualized mode of managing their diabetes to best suit their lifestyle. Since type one diabetics are completely dependent upon insulin therapy to live, preexisting treatment methods and furthering research is imperative. There are new and emerging technologies and devices to aid diabetics in better managing their disease. This results in tighter glucose control, thus reducing the risk of complications from poorly controlled diabetes. For example, neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy can result from constant hyperglycemia in the body. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to make available the methods of treatment needed for diabetics in order to maintain their health.
Purpose: The purpose of this review is to analyze and compile literature about the advancements made and subsequent research for new methods of diabetes management. When speaking on behalf of the nursing profession, it is important for nurses to be aware of diabetes management methods so that they are well suited to provide the appropriate care to diabetic patients in the healthcare setting.
Methods: An expanded literature review was conducted utilizing PubMed. A combination of search terms was used and yielded 158 results. Of those within the last year (2024-2025), 22 journal articles were selected.
Results: Across the various literature sources utilized, studies and findings about advancements in type one diabetes management are found. These advancements show a positive impact on the health of people living with type one diabetes.
Conclusions: Overall findings suggest that type one diabetics have several methods to manage their disease that can best fit their personal health and lifestyle choices. With new and emerging technologies and further research, it can be expected that the realm of diabetes management will grow, thus benefiting those with the disease. This, in turn, impacts the nursing profession in that nurses’ roles and responsibilities of caring for diabetic patients are altered to adapt to these new technologies. This includes becoming proficient in using these new diabetic tools, interpreting data and trends to assist in treatment, and providing patient education to ensure diabetic health amongst patients
DEFEND: A 1M Dataset Foundation Model for Tobacco Analysis
The study of tobacco imagery and marketing is a complex challenge that involves extremely large datasets. It also demands a detailed analysis of the so- cial context and specific types of tobacco being marketed. Despite major recent advances in computer vision and foundation model technology, this still poses a substantial challenge. Through the DEFEND model, we aspire to address these obstacles by integrating features such as multimodal learning, hierarchical under- standing, and feature extraction to develop a foundation model designed to handle the unique challenges of tobacco image analysis. One of the core elements of DE- FEND is the Tobacco 1M dataset, a 1M dataset that is substantially larger than previous models and filters tobacco products into specific categories, with labels for specific tobacco types, brands, and lines, allowing the model to have a greater level of nuance and accuracy in its analysis. This DEFEND model outperforms many leading computer vision models in tobacco analysis in a variety of bench- marks, and demonstrates the potential of these additional technologies with regard to public health analysis and working with large datasets
Balancing Tradition and Tourism: Crafting an Effective Marketing Strategy for Belize\u27s National Parks
This thesis reflects on a summer internship in the small town of Dangriga, Belize. The author interned at Mayflower Bocawina National Park, a role made possible through Dr. Amy Farmer and Mr. Steve Darr. While tourism plays a significant role in Belize’s economic development, communities like Dangriga remain underdeveloped in their tourism strategies. The author and her partner collaborated to design a targeted marketing plan for Mayflower Bocawina National Park, aimed at increasing visitor engagement and boosting local tourism revenue
Comparative Analysis of the Community Reinvestment Act and the B Impact Assessment
This thesis presents a comparative analysis of the Community Reinvestment (CRA) and the B Corp Certification through the B-Impact Assessment (BIA). The CRA was enacted in 1977 and is a mandatory regulatory measure aimed at addressing discriminatory lending practices and encouraging equitable credit distribution in underserved communities. In contrast, the BIA is a voluntary assessment developed by the nonprofit B Lab to evaluate a company’s social, environmental and governance practices, which lead to B Corp Certification. This analysis explores the historical background, mission, methodology, success metrics and financial costs associated with each framework. Ultimately, this thesis highlights how both models, despite their differences in origin and application, contribute meaningfully to fostering responsible corporate behavior and community development
Causes and Contributing Factors in General Aviation Fixed-wing Stall and Spin Accidents
General Aviation operations are all civil aviation operations excluding commercial airline operations and cargo transport. General Aviation accidents comprise approximately 94% of all aviation accidents in the United States annually. Stall and spin accidents are the third most common causes of fatal General Aviation accidents, accounting for 7.28% of such accidents in 2013–2022. The National Transportation Safety Board investigates and records all General Aviation accidents in the United States. Using the National Transportation Safety Board’s accident database, I investigated stall and spin accidents between 2013 and 2022 to find (1) the most common phases of flight where stall and spin occurred, (2) the factors that occurred prior to the stall and spin, and (3) the reasonings/findings for accidents that occurred during low altitude maneuvering. The findings from my research may help the pilot community better understand when and what causes a stall and spin and how to prevent these accidents in the future. The findings may also help modify training procedures to help improve General Aviation safety
Sustainability: Buzz Word or Future of Fashion? Measuring the Feasibility of Outright Sustainability among Fast Fashion’s Biggest Agents
Abstract
The fashion industry is currently experiencing unsustainable rates of pollution within its supply chains. The rapid increase in demand for short lead times perpetrated by large-scale retailers has led to hazardous practices negatively affecting both the environmental conditions and working conditions of producing countries. With this increased pressure, relationships between brands and suppliers have become untenable. Limited transparency and imbalanced power dynamics at the hand of the industry’s leading retailers require restructuring in order to build more sustainable and equitable supply-chain practices. Further, governmental regulation is currently limited in its capacity to enforce sustainable business practices on a global scale. This analysis is applicable for the restructuring of the global supply chain and offers guidance to the necessary steps to build a truly circular fashion economy. Findings from this paper conclude that adoption of circular practices by fashion retailers must begin with investment in long-term sustainable production methods. These methods are shown to offer profitability when adopted through a diversified low-impact materials portfolio, more efficient energy sources, and improved utilization of excess materials created throughout the production process. Governmental bodies must enact more stringent regulatory measures to ensure the adoption of these practices while offering equitability to companies leading the charge in this transition, a process displayed by the efforts of the European Union. The results of this work show a feasible and profitable path towards outright sustainability within the fashion industry when encompassing all necessary measures
The Switch: Determinants of family school modality choices during the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges to the U.S. K-12 education system, disrupting traditional public school enrollment while fueling growth in private schooling and homeschooling. Some research has analyzed these decisions at the state level or with administrative data, but little is known about the associated characteristics of these decisions nationally. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of public, private, and homeschooling enrollment patterns during the pandemic, focusing on the transitions families made between these schooling types and identifying key characteristics associated with switching in and out of public schools. Using a discrete choice duration model and random forest algorithms on data from the Understanding America Study conducted by the University of Southern California, we find that factors such as parental education, household income, and trust in Fox News were significant predictors of school switching behavior. Notably, homeschoolers and private school enrollees exhibited contrasting associations with variables like income, urbanicity, and family size. We also attempt to capture the changes in the importance of these factors through these analyses. Perceived risk of COVID-19 and the availability of remote learning options were found to be relevant variables at the beginning of the pandemic. Understanding the characteristics of families exiting and reentering public schools can help districts design responsive policies and address socioeconomic sorting that may exacerbate segregation. Moreover, the persistent gap in public school enrollment seen in administrative data—potentially explained by truancy, unregistered homeschooling, or kindergarten non-enrollment (Dee, 2023)—highlights the need for improved data tracking and points to educational setbacks. Finally, the school choice movement in the United States has strengthened in recent years, with many states passing legislation supporting the marketization of schools (Abdulkadiroglu & Andersson, 2022). Learning about parental educational decisions, especially at a time of crisis like a pandemic, and the stickiness of these choices can shed light on potential risks when implementing various education policies.https://scholarworks.uark.edu/hnrcsturpc25/1011/thumbnail.jp
