Effectiveness of Maternal Bovine Appeasing Substance Administered to Newly Received, High-Risk Stocker Calves
Stocker cattle purchased at auction can be susceptible to disease due to the stressors associated with the auction process and are referred to as “high-risk.” The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of a maternal bovine appeasing substance, FerAppease®, on the growth performance, health, and behavior of stocker cattle. Male beef calves (n = 80) were purchased at auction and transported to the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Savoy Research Complex Beef Stocker Unit. On day 0, bulls were castrated, and steers and bulls were assigned to 8 pens (n = 10 calves/pen; 6 bulls and 4 steers/pen). Cattle in 4 pens were treated with FerAppease (F) (n = 40), and cattle in the other 4 pens were not treated and served as controls (C, n = 40). Cattle were monitored daily for clinical signs of bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Body weight was recorded, and average daily gain was calculated. Chute exit velocity was measured with an electric timing system. Hair-extracted cortisol and blood serum haptoglobin were also measured. There was minimal treatment effect (P \u3e 0.05) on any of the measures collected. However, more C bulls at arrival had been treated for BRD by the end of the trial (63%) compared to other groups (41% F bulls, 6% C steers, and 30% F steers; sex × treatment P = 0.05). Overall, the results from this study indicate that there could have been some effect of the treatment through a reduction in morbidity

“Groups of unmarried women at quilting bees used to shake up a cat in the newly completed
quilt, and then stand in a big circle as the animal is suddenly released...”
The practice of quilting and quilting bees are a unique tradition and even possess heirloom value within the hills of the Ozarks. While quilts have a variety of practical functions, quilting bees served as a method of fellowship traditionally between women.7 In this context, the sewing practice of quilting is woven within folklore. Randolph’s research describes the ritual as nearly synonymous with that of fortune telling. The ritual commences as follows: when a quilt was completed, groups of unmarried women stood in a circle each pulling an edge of the quilt
taut while a cat was placed in the middle. The cat was briefly shaken and then released8The procedure maintains that whomever the cat landed on afterward would be the next to be married. Created by Mrs. D.O. Atteberry in the Summer of 1963, this double wedding ring quilt block is an example of what each member of the quilting bee might have contributed to the completed project. Atteberry’s quilt block was collected by Margaret Frazier and documented by Mary Celestia Parler’s folklore class in 1965.

Evaluation of Tracheal and Cecal Microbial Composition in Heat Stressed Broilers Supplemented with Phytogenic Additives
The rise in global temperatures has become a concern due to its significant impact on the agricultural sector, including poultry production. Heat stress caused by high temperatures directly affects animal welfare, health and productivity, leading to major losses in the poultry sector. In broilers, heat stress affects feed consumption, weight gain, mortality and may also lead to changes in the microbiome, which can increase the predisposition to disease and impact the overall performance of these animals. The aim of this thesis was to reproduce field conditions, simulating an increase in temperature, and to evaluate possible changes in the respiratory and intestinal microbiome. At the same time, to assess the possible potential compounds to mitigate the deleterious effects of HS. For this purpose, broiler animals were divided into groups according to treatment, where Lippia origanoides essential oil associated with herbal Betaine were used in two different concentrations in the diet (initial/growth/finishing). The animals were exposed to heat stress cyclically, starting on day 10 of life for 12 hours a day (8:00-20:00) until day 42. The cecal contents and tracheal lavage were collected to evaluate the possible changes in the microbiome of birds exposed to heat and, comparatively, birds that received supplementation with Lippia origanoides and herbal betaine. The first chapter consists of a brief review of this thesis. Chapter 2 provides a literature review of the physiological aspects of heat stress in poultry, the respiratory and cecal microbiome, as well as a brief review of essential oils and their applications in poultry farming. Chapter 3 covers the research carried out, demonstrating the results of using these phytogenic compounds in situations of heat stress in poultry production
