    The Role of Specialty Coffee Roasters: A Proposal for a Sustainable Value Chain

    Specialty Coffee Roasters are starting to adopt transparency to reshape the coffee value chain, as climate change and sustainability challenges deepen. Through a case study of Onyx Coffee Lab in Arkansas, this research examines how transparency in pricing and traceability can foster more equitable and sustainable value chain systems. This thesis also explores the potential of B Corp Certification to further embed sustainability into Specialty Coffee Roasters’ business models, by comparing Onyx with Coffee Collective based in Denmark, which already has B Corp certification. By making pricing transparent and investing in producer relationships, Specialty Coffee Roasters can lead a future that is not only sustainable but also deeply rooted in shared passion and mutual respect. The future of coffee depends on the actions of Specialty Coffee Roasters

    Troublesome Medicine Man : Representations of the Sword Bearer Incident in Newspaper Coverage

    Newspaper coverage of Native Americans during the nineteenth century had an “artistic bias,” or a tendency to emphasize action, danger, and treachery as a part of the “Indian formula.” This meant that vast amounts of journalistic zeal was spent on instances of conflict and tension between tribes, within tribes, between tribes and white settlers, or between tribes and the U.S. military, while times of peace and instances of cooperation received miniscule amounts of attention. This was largely motivated by a desire to justify American western expansion and the need to “civilize” Native groups. This “Indian formula” was also applied in the coverage of the Sword Bearer Incident of 1887, a rebellion by a group of young Crow (or Apsáalooke) warriors led by Sword Bearer (or Wraps Up His Tail), on the Crow Reservation. Newspapers used their coverage of the Sword Bearer Incident to pursue their own agendas by using different approaches, criticizing governmental policy, reporting inaccurate information, and perpetuating negative biases and stereotypes about Native Americans

    Characteristics of Patterned Surface Dielectric Barrier Discharge Devices for Ionic Wind Propulsion

    Electroaerodynamic (EAD) or ionic wind propulsion is a growing area of research for small noiseless low speed aircraft. Previous flight demonstrations and experimentation have revealed that traditional methods of EAD propulsion utilizing corona discharge incur a large drag penalty due to their collector and emitter geometries. Recent publications detail flexible and geometrically conformable surface dielectric barrier discharge devices (SDBD) that could increase thrust and decrease drag as an ion source for an EAD propulsion system. This thesis explores the effects of different electrode sizes and geometries on total SDBD power consumption. SDBDs of a hexagonal, triangular, and square electrode geometry and of three different electrode surface areas were analyzed. All SDBDs discharged at an average ignition voltage of 1.25 kV at 1 kHz and could discharge at frequencies ranging from 0.1 kHz to 2.8 kHz. The power consumption of the hexagonal SDBDs was 8% more efficient as the triangular and square patterned SDBDs and an increase in SDBD electrode surface area revealed to be directly proportional to an increase in SDBD power consumption. Fitting the power consumption data of all SDBDs to an analytical model of SDBD power consumption proposed by Nicholas Wilde from MIT was also attempted

    Cornelius Nepos: Fortune, Biography, and the Late Roman Republic

    Abstract: This paper examines ancient biography and the late Roman Republic by analyzing the surviving writings of Cornelius Nepos. Cornelius Nepos was a late Republican intellectual and friend of several of the most prominent literary figures of his day. The literature on Nepos tended to be dismissive of the author until the 1980s, when it began to shift towards viewing Nepos through the lens of ancient biography. By examining the theme of fortuna [fortune] throughout Nepos’ work and contrasting it with usage of the theme in other Latin authors or Greek historians, this paper demonstrates that Nepos adapts a longstanding historical theme to his own project and time in a number of ways. These include treating fortuna as a phenomenon that takes place at the level of the individual and focusing on how the invidia (jealousy) of one’s peers in response to good fortune can prove dangerous. These findings indicate that Nepos was an author with unique insights into the events of his own lifetime

    Unheard Dissonance: An Examination of Disability Representation in Horn Repertoire

    In recent years, diversity has come to the forefront of many discussions within western art music. Several organizations have been founded to promote the inclusion and representation of musicians of various genders, races, backgrounds, and ethnic roups, but disability is often left out of these conversations. Due to the barriers continually faced by composers and musicians with disabilities, their voices are seldom heard within horn repertoire. However, several works for horn exist which represent disability programmatically, both by disabled and non-disabled composers. In this presentation, I will examine the musical representations of disability in these works as it relates to the current social progress of the disabled community. Through interviews with composers, historical research, and musical analysis, I will place these works within a modern framework of disability studies and examine their impacts on perceptions of disability in a broader societal context

    Intercellular Stress Generation During 1D Collective Migration of Cancer Cells

    Physical forces drive many cellular processes such as migration and proliferation. A metastatic tumor will have invasive strands/chains that extend from the main tumor. These chains of cells collectively migrate away from the main tumor to establish new colonies elsewhere in the body. However, how physical forces drive this collective invasion and the required energy for this process is not well understood. Invasion of a metastatic tumor to surrounding tissues leads to a majority of cancer-associated death and is often a collective effort among cells, it is therefore important to fully understand the process behind collective cancer invasion. The goal of this project is to determine the forces that drive collective cell migration in a one-dimensional system of cells. Analyzing a single strand of migrating cells allows for an in vitro analysis of metastatic chains developed by a tumor. To confine migrating cells to a one-dimensional chain we engineered the extracellular environment via micropatterning such that cells only migrated along a thin line of extracellular matrix proteins patterned onto an elastic substrate. Once contained on a patterned elastic substrate with known physical properties, cell-matrix, and cell-cell forces were quantified via Traction Force Microscopy (TFM) by tracking substrate deformations. To connect these forces with cellular bioenergetics, we quantify the energy level of these migrating cell chains by measuring the cellular NADH:NAD+ ratio with a genetically encoded molecular probe. Current results suggest that cells leading the collective migration experience greater forces, implying that these cells have greater bioenergetic needs. We have not found a statistically significant correlation between cellular energy and force generation, more replicates are needed to establish a relationship between the two

    A Comparative Analysis of SALT and CLAN in the Context of Analyzing Disfluencies in Preschool-Age Children Who Stutter

    This case study compares two widely used language sample analysis (LSA) programs including the Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT) software and the Child Language Analysis (CLAN) software. The comparison aims to evaluate their effectiveness in analyzing the conversation-based language sample of a preschool-aged child who was reported at-risk for stuttering. A conversational language sample was collected from a four-year-old male at a local head-start program. The sample was transcribed and analyzed using both SALT and CLAN. SALT provided a user-friendly interface with clear results and a comparison to normative data. Some of these results included a maze and word percentage to assess fluency. CLAN offered a more detailed linguistic summary, including syntactic measures such as the Developmental Sentence Score (DSS) and Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn), but required more manual coding and training. Results suggest that SALT may be more accessible for clinical use due to its intuitive design, while CLAN may be better suited for research contexts with researchers that have time to work with the more advanced software. This study aims to examine the strengths and limitations of both software and how practical these assessment tools are for clinicians assessing clients with a potential fluency disorder
