    Passages is a collection of wood sculptures and drawings by Arden Carlson, exploring a mesh of southern intimacies and queer musings; underpinned by the logics of belief, grief, and love. The result is a tender field of angelic birds fixed in flight over gnawed surfaces of grain and graphite. The following dissertation details the artist’s logic during the construction of the visual art thesis exhibition, Passages. The writing is composed in an autoethnographic format, backed by supporting anecdotes and creative methodologies that help to route the operational modes used. Near the end of this writing, you’ll find an additional addendum for the thesis’ lack of criticism proper, containing a provision of supplemental texts regarding wider viewpoints on the American South and / or the queer life within. This list is meant to be an ever-evolving addendum, despite its momental capture due to the nature of a scholarly deadline. A selection of the artist’s work and this thesis writing from 2024 makes up the degree requirements for the Master of Fine Arts in Art degree program at the University of Arkansas. The visual work was displayed March 25-30, 2024 in an installation-based format at the SCUL gallery on Hill Avenue in Fayetteville, AR. More installation photographs and associated writings are available for viewing through a simple navigable page on the artist’s website

    Evaluation of Protein Turnover, Lipid Turnover, and Calcium Utilization on broiler breeder performance

    Broiler breeder performance is based upon egg production. Breeders are reared from day of hatch to ovulation with the main goal of controlling body weight. Maintaining body weight in breeders is highly emphasized prior to first egg as to reach optimum peak production feeding increases dramatically to meet energy needs. Energy is supplied to the breeder in three forms carbohydrates (fast energy), protein (medium energy), and fat (slow energy). Carbohydrates are quickly used by the breeders, while protein is constantly being utilized by the breeder for growth and egg production, fat is stored and used lastly as the energy requirements exceed protein turnover’s ability to meet these requirements. Protein turnover (synthesis and degradation) works constantly to supply energy for the breeder to grow, produce eggs, and complete maintenance within the breeder. Protein turnover is not enough to supply energy to meet every metabolic energy need in the breeder consistently for extended periods of high energy strain, thus lipid turnover supports protein turnover during extended periods of energy strain. Lipid turnover is an evaluation of triglyceride synthesis and degradation in the breeder. Lipid turnover is extremely slow, synthesis of triglycerides occurs at very low rates and requires long period to build up reservoirs of energy. Degradation of fat is a last resort for the breeder to supply energy to perform, due to the slow nature of lipid mobilization it requires time for the breeder to begin utilization of fat. Protein and lipid turnover working in tandem with one another can generate increased energy to meet egg production. Energy is important for the breeder to be able to do the work required for egg production, but good egg quality is necessary for reproduction of chicks. To produce eggs of good quality multiple minerals are needed, of this calcium is one of these important minerals. Calcium is provided in the diet from young ages and is an essential mineral for skeletal development and maintenance of the pullet. As calcium is continuously supplied to the breeder over long periods of time prior to egg production the body has the ability to store it for utilization at a later time. Calcium mobilization concentrations can be altered to increase or decrease the available calcium for egg production. Along with multiple other minerals, tracing the calcium being given to the breeder from day of hatch to the output of calcium in eggshells evaluates when breeders are altering concentration levels of minerals to support increased egg production, growth, and maintenance of the body

    Decolonizing Neo-liberalism, Empowering the Local: A Global South Reading of Noir in the 2000s.

    This research aims at providing a Global South reading of noir in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It relies on the premise that noir, a sub-genre of crime fiction born in France during World War II, offered new avenues of literary creation and political criticism. Based on a selection of authors from the U.S., Mexico, Algeria, and Cameroon, the dissertation explores how authors from underrepresented or formerly-colonized communities discuss the impact of neoliberal thinking in their communities. With an emphasis on race and gender dynamics, nation building and terrorism, police corruption and brutality, or the growth of organized, each author relies on a form of discourse whose close ties with a leftist agenda and a concern for the disenfranchised is well known. Eventually, this emphasis on the poorest and their struggles, the commitment to a non-Western perspective eventually raise the question of what diversity, economic development look like. To achieve this objective, the research will discuss the impact of crime fiction, its ties to Western culture, its appropriation by non-Western. To discuss the critique of neoliberal ideology and its impact, decolonial theory with an emphasis on Achille Mbembé’s concepts of brutalism and necropolitics will guide our discussion. Eventually, noir shows a remarkable ability to address numerous, offering a new platform for economic and political critique, and stylistic innovations

    Cooperating Teacher Mentorship Behaviors and Job Satisfaction as Predictors of Agricultural Education Interns’ Intent to Teach

    Almost a quarter of agricultural education graduates do not teach SBAE upon graduating (Foster et al., 2024), however, this attrition has not been widely studied and reasons for this decision have not been identified. To increase the number of qualified teachers entering the classroom, the reasons for this attrition must be identified and addressed by universities. This study was conducted to investigate possible relationships between cooperating teacher mentorship behaviors, job satisfaction, and intent to teach in spring 2024 agricultural education interns. A survey, which combined the student teacher view part of Nesbitt and Barry’s (2023) cooperating teacher best practices instrument with Brayfield and Rothe’s (1951) index of job satisfaction, and items for intent to teach and demographics, was emailed to 355 agricultural education interns. The sample was identified through a random cluster sampling of universities offering an agricultural education major. A total of 106 interns responded to the survey, yielding 103 usable responses, constituting a response rate of 30.03%. Interns were surveyed on their perceptions of their cooperating teachers’ mentorship behaviors, job satisfaction, intent to teach, and demographics. Descriptive statistics, correlational analysis, and logistic regression were used to answer the six research objectives that guided this study. Most participants were Caucasian (93.2%, n = 96), and female (80.6%, n = 83). The average cooperating teacher was Caucasian (98.1%, n = 101), male (53.4%, n = 55), and had 15.75 (SD = 9.00) years of teaching experience. The average student teaching placement site was small and in a rural community (64.1%, n = 66). Most (77.7%, n = 80) interns had a job teaching or had intentions of getting a job teaching SBAE for fall 2024. Interns perceived social support behaviors as the highest type of mentorship behavior (M = 4.43, SD = 0.82) and were satisfied with teaching as a job (M = 3.89, SD = 0.58). No demographics were related to intent to teach; however, all three mentorship behaviors and job satisfaction were related to intent to teach. A logistic regression revealed that role modeling and job satisfaction were the only variables that were predictive of intent to teach. Based on the results, the study makes recommendations for both practice and research

    Evaluation of a Capsule Suspension Formulation of S-metolachlor for Use in Fenclorim-Treated Rice and Wheat

    The continued evolution of herbicide resistance is one of the primary concerns facing Arkansas growers today. Problematic weeds such as barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.] and Italian ryegrass [Lolium perenne L. ssp. multiflorum (Lam.) Husnot] have evolved resistance to some of the most used herbicides in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). To counteract this resistance, alternative herbicide sites of action should be explored. S-metolachlor is a very-long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA)-inhibiting herbicide [Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC)/Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) Group 15] commonly used in U.S. row crops to control grasses and small-seeded broadleaf weeds. S-metolachlor is not currently labeled for use in rice nor wheat, but recent studies describe the potential use of Group 15 herbicides in these crops. Using a herbicide safener is one strategy to improve herbicide selectivity and reduce injury to crop plants. Fenclorim is one such safener previously shown to effectively safen acetochlor applications in rice. Experiments were conducted from 2021 to 2023 to investigate the potential use and efficacy of S-metolachlor applied with fenclorim as a seed treatment for barnyardgrass and Italian ryegrass control in rice and wheat, respectively. Experiments in wheat evaluated S-metolachlor at two application timings, preemergence (PRE) and delayed-preemergence (DPRE), and two rates of fenclorim, 0.5 and 2 g ai kg seed-1. Results from these experiments indicated visual wheat injury from S-metolachlor at 1.12 kg ai ha-1 applied PRE was reduced from 34 to 18% with nontreated seed and fenclorim-treated wheat at 2.0 g ai kg-1 of seed, respectively. However, a minimal effect of the herbicide safener was observed during the DPRE application. Wheat yield followed a similar pattern to injury, with increased yield (2,500 vs. 1,500 kg ha-1) occurring when fenclorim-treated wheat at 2.0 g ai kg-1 of seed was used compared to the nontreated with a PRE application of the highest rate of S-metolachlor, respectively. Experiments in rice were conducted using three commonly planted Midsouth varieties, ‘Diamond,’ ‘DG263L’, and ‘PVL03’; however, varieties were not directly compared. In rice, when S-metolachlor was applied DPRE, fenclorim increased rice tolerance for both ‘Diamond’ and ‘DG263L’; however, commercial tolerance was not achieved with S-metolachlor rates higher than 0.68 kg ai ha-1. When applied as an early-post application, S-metolachlor at 1.12 kg ai ha-1 resulted in up to 50% injury in ‘Diamond’ rice, but yield did not differ from the nontreated control. S-metolachlor at 0.68 kg ai ha-1 provided 90% barnyardgrass control at 28 days after treatment on a clay soil, while less than 20% rice injury was observed with fenclorim. A similar experiment was conducted on a silt loam soil evaluating both a DPRE and 1-leaf application timing and indicated that when applied DPRE, only S-metolachlor at 0.28 kg ai ha-1 in combination with a fenclorim seed treatment provided a level of tolerance similar to a microencapsulated acetochlor. Barnyardgrass control was unsatisfactory at this rate and thus would not be recommended. While it is crucial to continue to explore alternative herbicides to delay the development of resistant weed species, this formulation of S-metolachlor with fenclorim would not provide adequate and consistent crop safety to rice and wheat with the necessary rates for effective weed control

    Cultural Theory and Climate Change Risk Perceptions: Factors That Affect Support for Climate Change Mitigation Policy in Arkansas

    This dissertation explores the intricate interplay between climate change perceptions, policy preferences, and the role of Cultural Theory in shaping public opinion. It begins by acknowledging the multifaceted impact of the climate crisis and emphasizing the critical importance of policy responses to mitigate its effects. Recognizing the diverse perspectives within the general public, the dissertation adopts a nuanced approach, leveraging Cultural Theory to investigate climate change risk perceptions and policy preferences. First, I examine disparities in fracking policy preferences between the general public and policy elites, employing Narrative Policy Framework-style narrative treatments. It reveals divergent responses to narrative elements, signaling a widening gap between policymakers and the public on this critical issue. Notably, the absence of hero effects underscores the potential of villain characters to influence policy preferences. I subsequently delve deeper into the role of Cultural Theory in shaping perceptions of climate change issues. It uncovers that individuals with traditionally low risk perceptions can have these perceptions heightened through specific media channels, particularly when emphasizing economic risks. This research offers insights into effective strategies for shaping climate change risk perceptions among typically resistant populations. The final stage of my research expands on previous approaches to measure educators, essential actors in climate change education and policy implementation. It examines the relationship between Cultural Theory worldviews, climate change knowledge, and risk perceptions among educators. The findings underscore the potential for climate change education initiatives for educators specifically to amplify risk perceptions and support for mitigation policies across not just educators but a broader swath of the general public as well. Collectively, these papers contribute to understanding public perceptions on critical climate-related issues, and illuminate the influence of Cultural Theory worldviews, news media consumption, and narrative treatments. They emphasize the need for nuanced research to identify the key drivers of public support for climate change policies, offering valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders aiming to address the climate crisis effectively

    Mental Health Calls for Service During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Examining the Geographic Distribution and Correlates of Service Requests in Little Rock, Arkansas

    In response to the Covid-19 global crisis, the United States implemented social interaction restrictions to curb the infection rate amongst citizens, affecting residents\u27 mental health by adding strain from daily routine change. This study examines how mental health has changed during the pandemic by focusing on geospatial differences of volume and concentration within 311 calls in Little Rock, Arkansas in 2018 and 2020. Our data comes from the City of Little Rock’s open database to construct geospatial maps (n= 155 block groups), along with Census survey data logistic regression models to show differences in community characteristics. Overall, mental health worsened over time for those in neighborhoods with higher disadvantages and residential mobility, leading to high concentration of calls residing in the downtown community. Our findings highlight the effects of the pandemic on mental health at a neighborhood-level and how geospatial tools can be of use to efficiently allocate resources to residents in a global crisis

    Ideological Becoming during Student, Preservice Teacher, and First-Year Teacher Experiences

    In the first manuscript in Chapter 2, this study examines two teachers’ talk about literacy as they describe literacy events and practices throughout multiple contexts. Drawing the theoretical framework of discourse and literacy as a social practice, this research illustrates the potential ways these first-year English teachers talk and have talked about literacy during their time as English methods students to their student teaching experience in their current contexts. Findings illustrate that the teachers assimilated and adapted their literacy ideologies early but continued evolving their understanding of literacy across various contexts. Implications for teacher education include considering literacy events through multiple pedagogical and ideological lenses. In the second manuscript in Chapter 3, the case study examines the ideological becoming of English preservice teachers within an English methods course. This study allows for the consideration of the ideological patterns the preservice teachers expressed as they reflect on their past ELA classes as students and their future ELA classes where they will be the teachers. Analyzing two digital stories, the research positions the preservice teachers within ideological systems through their characterization of secondary ELA as they grow and learn within a course that centered anti-bias and antiracist work. Reflecting on a semester-long methods course in conjunction with larger conversations in English education, the findings suggest that preservice teachers’ ideological becoming can offer insights into how to reframe their characterizations of secondary ELA in service of equitable pedagogies. Answering the call “What is English?”, Chapter 4’s practitioner-focused manuscript examines the ideological beliefs of secondary ELA preservice teachers and their re-imaginings about the future of ELA as they enter the profession. In two digital stories, these preservice teachers often imagined ELA worlds full of joy and belonging. Through the lenses they provide, this manuscript offers a conceptualization of joyful literacies pedagogy and makes suggestions for teachers to develop joy and belonging within secondary ELA

    Identifying Waterway Traffic Flow Patterns Using Modified Clustering

    Efficient management of inland waterways is essential for the economic and operational efficiency of transportation networks. Characterization and prediction of waterway vessel traffic flow patterns by time of day are critical for optimizing planned disruptive events like maintenance activities. This study identifies and predicts inland waterway traffic flow patterns along the Lower Mississippi River (LMR) using a modified clustering approach. A five-year period of Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, which tracks vessel movements in real-time, is used for model development and evaluation. The model first segments the river into approximately one-mile-long traffic message channels (TMCs) to estimate vessel counts and daily traffic patterns, represented as hourly volumes over a 24-hr period. Unique vessels in the TMC are counted towards the TMC volume. Then, daily traffic patterns of selected TMC are clustered using a modified clustering algorithm into groups to identify common patterns. Finally, using weighted averaging, common patterns are combined using weights based on the prediction month to estimate a time-of-day pattern and traffic volume for a future period. Data from 2018 to 2021 was used for model development and validation, and data from 2022 was used for model evaluation. The modified clustering approach enhances estimation accuracy, reducing the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) from 34.6 (Mean) and 34.7% (Median) in baseline models to 30.6% and 29.8% with K-Means and DBSCAN, respectively. Moreover, the direction of vessel movements (upstream or downstream) had minimal impact on MAPE, suggesting that combined traffic data does not compromise prediction accuracy. Insights into time-of-day vessel traffic patterns aid in the optimization of maritime operations, enabling decision-makers to strategically plan waterway closures by determining the best timing and duration based on traffic patterns
