Economic Anomalies Following the Handover of Hong Kong

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to examine and provide a possible explanation for economic anomalies in Hong Kong following its handover to China. Hong Kong was on a 99-year lease to the United Kingdom from China before being handed back over July 1st, 1997. Due to the “one country, two systems” policy espoused in the handover agreement that was to be implemented for fifty years, this event marks a rare natural experiment of a peaceful regime change without a significant change in governance. This paper seeks to understand the impact of the act of regime change on selected key macroeconomic indicators using Chow tests to examine the data for structural breaks. In addition, the paper examines the averages of these variables in the years preceding and years after 1997 to further understand possible changes. The paper engages in significant literature review around the behavior of the Chinese government prior to the handover of Hong Kong and integrates this into a hypothesis to explain why macroeconomic variables in Hong Kong saw changes when the structure of governance and in particular its economic system saw very little change. The paper advances the idea that expectations surrounding a regime change may cause short run fluctuations in macroeconomic indicators as market participants make their decisions on the basis of those expectations. The implications of this idea are explored especially in how if true this idea provides a blueprint for groups to influence economic behavior through their own actions and signaling prior to that group attaining authority in a region or nation

    E-Commerce Internship at CoreTrex

E-commerce is changing the digital world as we know it, and it is an important part of our daily lives as it influences our behaviors as consumers. In this paper, I will describe the complicated nature of e-commerce through the lens of my personal experience at CoreTrex, an e-commerce agency based in Rogers, Arkansas. E-commerce has transformed how businesses connect with consumers and how consumers connect back with businesses. From its early stages as smaller online marketplaces to its current state as a much more complex virtual ecosystem, e-commerce has undergone many changes due to technological advancements and changing consumer behaviors

Examining the Relationship Between Manning\u27s Roughness Coefficient and Stage

    Get PDF
This paper uses LOESS regression to predict Manning\u27s roughness coefficient to calculate flows in natural stream channels. Manning\u27s roughness coefficient can introduce variability into Manning\u27s equation, potentially destabilizing results. Utilizing LOESS to find n based on backcalculated n from collected discharge vs. stage information is the best way to acquire accurate Manning\u27s roughness coefficient values at a variety of flows. Book values tend to drastically overestimate which can have wide-ranging implications for water allocation, flood management, maintaining environmental flows, and maintaining water quality

Photon Number and Waiting-time Distributions for Superposed Light States

    Get PDF
Nonclassical states of light are characterized by properties which can be explained by the quantum model of light but not the classical model. Such nonclassical properties may be revealed through photon counting statistics. In our research, we have examined the properties for several variations of the superposed state of light. These variations include a superposition of coherent states with evenly distributed phases (GSC state) and a superposition of squeezed vacuum states with evenly distributed phases, with particular attention given to superpositions of two coherent states (cat states). First, we calculate the photon number distribution for each of these states, and then we calculate the unconditional and conditional waiting-time distributions in the short-time limit. Signatures of non-classicality, such as photon antibunching, can be seen in the conditional waiting-time distribution. Our results reveal that the odd cat state and the GSC state show antibunching in the conditional waiting-time distribution, but the even cat state and the superposed squeezed vacuum state do not. This research contributes to an understanding of where the quantum signatures of light can be observed

Seeing Race & Sexuality: Child Welfare & Forced Labor

    Get PDF
This Article examines how child welfare responds to children who are forced to labor through a case study of California. We use an intersectional framework to argue that a conceptualization of current sociolegal responses to human trafficking cannot be delinked from racialized and sexualized forms of governmentality. In using an intersectional framework, we hope to draw upon intersectionality as a way to “point[] to the ways that structural inequality, persistent disadvantages, and structural abandonment are some of the root causes of microlevel violent interactions and at the same time influence how effective macrolevel justice policies are at responding to or preventing violent victimization.” By examining the differential role of child welfare responses as a localized response to a global form of exploitation, human trafficking, it is shown that race, gender, and national origin continue to impact those who are perceived as “victims” of human trafficking in the United States. This perception of victimhood is predicated on protecting whiteness and is rooted in institutional efforts to normalize the victimization of people of color, immigrants, and the financially vulnerable. As this study occurred prior to and concurrent with the COVID-19 pandemic (2019-2021), the context of how minoritized communities experienced marginalization during a global crisis is also important to acknowledge
