    Computer networking concepts enhancement through analogies: a study of information technology students

    Computer networks are one of the skills that require mastering concepts, but a weak comprehension of these concepts can cause cognitive and psychomotor challenges for students. Several studies showed that a group of information technology education students at a university struggled with basic network practical exercises, signifying the importance of addressing conceptual understanding. Therefore, this study aimed to enhance students’ comprehension of high-level abstract computer network materials. To achieve the desired outcome, a pre-test post-test control group design was conducted on two groups of 29 students each. The results showed a positive impact on strengthening the conceptual understanding of students. Consequently, the experimental class achieved higher test scores compared to the control class, with a difference of 11.6. Data processing also showed higher N-gain values in the experimental class, indicating that analogies had a positive influence on students’ conceptual understanding of computer network materials

    Development of mathematical mindset scale for mathematics education students

    Mathematical mindset is a vital element of one’s ability to understand mathematics. Teachers’ mindsets affect the way they deliver mathematics to their students, which in turn, will affect students’ mathematical mindsets. This paper discusses and proposes a mathematical mindset scale (MMS) for mathematics education students as prospective teachers. The instrument was developed to examine respondents’ mindset towards mathematics. There are three-stage processes to finalize the items in the instrument. The first stage is theory collection and preparation of instrument items based on the dimensions of challenge, resilience, effort, learning from critics, and learning from mistakes. The second stage is content validation by a team of experts. The final stage is item selection using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The CFA results with a total of 259 mathematics education students produced 11 questions with factor loadings above 0.5. Meanwhile, construct reliability (CR) and average variance extracted (AVE) values are all above the criterion values. The limitations of this research are also discussed further

    School counselors as agents of peace in the school: a systematic literature review

    Adolescence is a critical phase that can raise a problem, one of which is violence. This condition harms the dynamics of academic activities at school if they do not immediately find a solution. One party that has a central role in character development to suppress student violence is school counselors. This research is a systematic literature review that describes the counselor’s role as an agent of peace whose primary focus is to build a culture of peace in the school environment. The results showed that counselors used two pillars of service to create a culture of peace in schools, namely peace guidance and peace counseling. This paper discusses operational descriptions for each of the posts to build a culture of peace in the school environment. This results should serve as a reference for school counselors in supporting their programs to reduce violence in schools. Besides, this study also recommends conducting further research to create a guidance and counseling program to reduce violence among adolescents in schools

    Elementary school students’ learning difficulties on distance learning during COVID-19: the psychological approach

    During the COVID-19 period, pupils in primary schools have encountered various learning challenges. In Indonesia, this occurs in every primary school. This study intends to lighten the psychological aspect of distance learning challenges. This study employs a mixed-method methodology by integrating qualitative research, a case study technique, and quantitative description (n=414). Researchers looked at three primary school models in South Sumatra and Special Region of Yogyakarta: Model A, which used technology-based online learning; Model B, which integrated online and offline learning; and Model C, which only used WhatsApp group-based offline learning. Focus group discussions, observations, documentation, and interviews with teachers, parents, and students were all undertaken by the researchers. They also distributed open-ended and closed-ended questionnaires via Google Form. The interactive Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s models were used to analyze data. The findings demonstrated that children in all three school models encountered similar learning challenges. Still, in Model C, the complexity of those challenges was more significant than in Model A and Model B. Learning challenges included issues with comprehending topics, struggling to solve the problems with completing tasks, and working with self-study. The lack of essential psychological needs, such as the ability to interact and actualize oneself, as well as the boredom or monotony of students when pursuing distance learning, are some of the causes of learning challenges. The findings of this study have consequences for teachers and psychologists, who should pay attention to children’s fundamental needs to improve learning motivation and academic progress in primary school pupils

    Educational video games to improve the learning process

    The pandemic has made us quickly migrate to virtual environments, for this reason, we must look for quality education mechanisms, thus continuing with the same level of traditional teaching. This research aims to determine the influence of an educational video game in improving the learning process, for which a study was carried out on first-cycle university students. The level of the research is explanatory, of the applied type, with a quantitative approach and quasi-experimental design. We worked with two groups already formed in which 65 students participated. The following results were obtained: an increase in the grade of motivation of 12.9%, an improvement in the acquired knowledge indicator of 46.34%, and an improvement in the obtained qualification indicator of 12.77%. Therefore, it is concluded that an educational video game influences the motivation, acquisition, and application of learning

    Development of manufacturing engineering program of Bulacan State University using employability tracer study

    Tracer study is one of the continuous quality improvement tools for curriculum development. The graduates are invited to answer the tracer form to determine their employability. Since the Manufacturing Engineering program in Bulacan State University (BuLSU) is the youngest engineering program, there is minimal data on graduates available, especially on the details of their first jobs, such as the first job related to the program, time taken to land their first job, gross monthly salary, and learning competencies. The demographic profile of the manufacturing engineering graduates from 2015 to 2019 is preserved and remains strictly confidential for the safety of their identification. Correspondingly, the study applied a cross-sectional retrospective survey method. Moreover, 67.41% of manufacturing engineering graduates responded. The employment rate of manufacturing engineering graduates was 93.38%, whereas regular or permanent in their current employment was 84.40%. Furthermore, data show that they are employed within less than a month, 50.97% of responses. Lastly, the primary learning competency that manufacturing engineering graduates consider is critical thinking skills, with a response rate of 86.11%, followed by problem-solving skills, with 81.94% responses, while third was communication skills, with a rate of 78.08%. Ultimately, the recommendations for further curriculum and program improvement are exhibited

    Relationship between student engagement and academic performance

    This research aims to investigate the impact of student engagement on academic performance. Using a sample of 196 students from the University of Tirana, Faculty of Economics, we used multiple regression to assess the effect of behavioral engagement, cognitive engagement, and emotional engagement on student’s performance. The results of the engagement model created using three constructs show a correlation between overall student engagement and academic performance. In this study, we identified that behavioral engagement was the only significant factor for academic performance, while the two other factors, namely, emotional and cognitive engagement were not significant factors for students’ academic performance. We also identified that there was a significant difference between bachelor and master students as well as their year of study. The coefficient for “bachelor and first class” is negative and significant. However, there are no substantial differences between working students and non-working students or their gender in the relationship between engagement and academic performance. Our results provide additional empirical evidence for the higher education institution, teachers, parents and peers and some pointers for policy making. Increasing the engagement of students brings benefits for all involved stakeholders

    Recent trends in collaborative learning: a systematic review and analysis

    This study analyses the scientific literature publications from 2015 to 2022 on collaborative learning published in the reputable database Scopus. The study uses the recommended preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) protocol to conduct a systematic analysis of the literature. A total of 664 relevant journal articles were included following the PRISMA framework. The study examined trends in journal article publications, the field of study in which the collaborative learning approach is applied, the participants used as study subjects, and the first authors' country of affiliation. The review highlights a significant growth in the amount of educational research that utilizes collaborative learning approaches. Researchers paid more attention to studies that focused on tertiary education settings, next on elementary school environments and a few studies examined collaborative learning within the context of the workplace. Based on the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) fields of study, many of the collaborative learning studies conducted over the recent four years (2019–2022) were aimed at enhancing students’ performance in multidisciplinary settings, followed by computing and physical sciences. The results indicate a considerable rise in technologyenhanced collaborative learning practices

    Indonesian students’ use of Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer in essay writing practices

    The proliferation of the Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) in the educational area has become a debatable topic. ChatGPT has proven to be appealing to students as a helpful resource in their learning journey, specifically in enhancing their proficiency in essay writing practices. Following this, the study endeavored to scrutinize the purpose and behavior of students employing ChatGPT for composing essays in the Indonesian language. Utilizing a quantitative methodology, the research centered on collecting and analyzing numerical data. The study employed a questionnaire as the research instrument, utilizing a 5-point Likert scale. The questionnaire was administered to 303 second-semester students enrolled in an essay writing course. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of students utilized ChatGPT to enhance their comprehension of essay writing concepts, bolster their confidence, and receive valuable feedback. The findings from the data analysis indicated that students perceived ChatGPT as a valuable resource for enhancing grammar and sentence structure, fostering creativity, and cultivating robust ideas and arguments

    A paper-based cheat-resistant multiple-choice question system with automated grading

    This paper focuses on how to reduce cheating and minimize errors while automatically grading paper-based multiple-choice questions (MCQ) by making the whole process relatively fast, less expensive, more credible, and fairer especially when the number of examinees and number of questions are large. Credibility is obtained when techniques and best practices are introduced in the design process of MCQ. Fairness is obtained by personalizing evaluation through permutation of answers and questions. The distance introduced in personalization has led to the modification of the traditional automatic grading process where an application mapping the test number with its responses in the grading software is loaded automatically at each start of the grading process. On the extracted header fields, 2DFFT is applied as well as the reduction of computed coefficients to obtain the corresponding final local characteristic in the representation. The minimization of image processing errors is then obtained by training a support vector machine (SVM) for handwriting optical character recognition (OCR) using the Mixed National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) dataset with 99.5% accuracy. The tests are carried out in several subjects at Fotso Victor University Institute of Technology (UIT) in Bandjoun and the ColTech of the University of Bamenda and teachers as well as students after investigation have confirmed that our method reduces cheating and improves the error rate during grading with fewer complaints
