    Ensuring continuity in science education (on example of physics curriculum)

    The relevance of the research stems from the need to study the issues of continuity of the school and university curricula content in science disciplines on the example of the “physics” course. This study aims at identifying the principles of continuity of the content of school curricula and higher education programs in natural sciences in the example of the “physics” course, as well as disclosing methods to ensure the continuity of secondary and higher education in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The primary method in this study is system analysis, which is applied to examine the continuity of the school and university science curricula content, using the “physics” course as an example. Moreover, a theoretical analysis of recent scientific publications was carried out in the research process. The study deals with the problem of maintaining continuity in the general secondary education curricula in the field of natural sciences based on a renewed education program. The study presents the results of the analysis in the form of methodological suggestions and reveals possible barriers to the implementation of lifelong learning

    Beware of cyberbullying! Evidence from high school students in Indonesia

    Cases of cyberbullying among high school students have become the center of attention of educational institutions as a new form of bullying using information technology. Many studies examine cyberbullying as a new form of bullying. However, studies on school climate, social support, and social self-efficacy in reducing cyberbullying behavior among high school students are still limited. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of school climate, social support, and social self-efficacy on cyberbullying behavior. This study involved 290 high school students in three schools in Kupang City, Indonesia. We used a simple random sampling technique to determine which respondents were involved. SPSS version 20 and Amos 18 software were used to analyze the data for this study. Data analysis in this study used structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis. The study’s results revealed that school climate and social self-efficacy significantly negatively affected high school students’ cyberbullying behavior. Meanwhile, social support has no direct influence on students’ cyberbullying behavior. Social self-efficacy has also been shown to mediate the effect of school climate on high school students’ cyberbullying behavior. An in-depth discussion is presented in this paper to provide an overview of the critical implications for educational practitioners

    Emotional intelligence of children with special needs using innovative technologies

    The research examines the emotional intelligence of school-age children in Kazakhstan and Russia and develops a set of strategies to teach students emotional intelligence. The study was conducted on the basis of the Weisinger’s five-dimensional model methodological framework based on the classical model of Coleman’s emotional intelligence. The research bases on data collected from 185 secondary school teachers in Kazakhstan and Russia who work with children with special needs. The participants filled out an 11-item questionnaire with 10 closed and 1 open-ended question. The results revealed that emotional intelligence played a vital role in the overall development of children, especially those with special needs. The level of emotional intelligence was also diagnosed in 264 sixth graders in the study region using the Weisinger Emotional Intelligence test twice; second test after one month of informational technologies for emotional intelligence improvement use. The results of the first test indicate a low level of emotional intelligence in the studied sample of children with disabilities (female=55.4, male=37.5); the result of the second test showed statistically significant small changes for the better (from 44.19 to 48.92 mean score in the sample)

    Developing an online project-based assessment instrument for assessing students’ historical thinking skills

    This study aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of historical thinking that can be applied to all aspects of online historical thinking skills. The analysis proposed by Gall was used in developing the model and it involves the following stages: instrument design; instrument development; analysis; and initial data collection. A total of 148 high school students participated in this study, and data were gathered through literature analysis sheets, interviews, needs analysis questionnaire for the development of e-project skills assessment tools, expert validation test, and e-project assessment. The findings showed that the e-project is valid and reliable for evaluating historical thinking skills in remote learning, with all components having a high reliability rating of 0.78 and validity values ranging from 0.77 to 1.30. Subsequently, a valid, reliable, and acceptable e-project website was created to assess student’s competence in historical thinking. This research offers options for teachers to effectively assess and monitor students’ historical thinking skills while also improving a more interactive and interesting learning style

    Understanding the significance of Olympic values in adults of Chile and Argentina

    Olympic values serve as a significant educational strategy advocated by both the International Olympic Committee and National Olympic Committees globally. Despite their widespread promotion, there exists a dearth of research comparing the comprehension of Olympic values among the adult population. This study aimed to scrutinize the understanding of Olympic values among a sample of 200 Chilean and Argentine adults aged between 18 and 65 years. The investigation was conducted in the context of recent mega sporting events, specifically the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires 2018 and the forthcoming Pan American Games in Santiago 2023. Employing the Fair Play theory and the Moral Competence Test, the research revealed a higher level of moral competence in the Argentine population compared to their Chilean counterparts. Interestingly, no discernible impact of the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires was observed in Argentina. Parental influence emerged as the most significant factor affecting moral competence in both countries, while religion and media demonstrated comparatively less influence. These findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the interplay between Olympic values, moral competence, and contextual factors in adult populations across different nations

    Mathematical exploration ability and students’ habits of mind based on gender: a study in junior high school level

    In learning mathematics, students tend to only be directed to get good results, without paying attention to how the exploration process of the problems given. In fact, the exploration process that students go through is different from one another and influenced by certain factors. The objective of this study is to describe the mathematical exploration ability on number pattern topic studied from the students’ habits of mind based on gender at the junior high school level. This study used mixed methods with sequential-explanatory model, and involved 27 students of grade VIII (second year). The instruments used include a test of mathematical exploration ability, habits of mind questionnaire, and an interview guidelines. The results revealed that there are differences in mathematical exploration ability between male and female students where some of the differences are caused by their habits of mind. Female students tended to be more able to explore mathematical problems than male students, because they applied more habits of mind than male students when trying to solve the problem. This also shows that habits of mind affect students’ mathematical exploration ability

    Implementing an online course in the MOOC environment with a focus on science and mathematics education

    The study focused on the development and evaluation of an online course in the massive open online courses (MOOC) environment, specifically targeting science and mathematics education. The goal was to utilize pedagogical design principles, particularly those derived from the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model, to create an effective learning experience for students in different years of study. The online course was hosted on the edX platform, which is a popular platform for MOOCs. The assessment of the online course covered various criteria: interface, interaction, and design. The criteria of interface, interaction, and design received high marks from students of the two groups. The study found that the participants were highly engaged during the training, which is a positive outcome. The analysis of interest in online learning among first- and fourth-year students shows that first-year students had an average level of interest in online learning of 4.50 with a standard deviation of 0.32. Fourth-year students had an average level of interest of 4.45 with a slightly larger standard deviation of 0.41. Student engagement is an important factor in effective learning, as it reflects their active involvement and motivation in the learning process

    Integration of techno-pedagogical approach in English as a second language classroom: a systematic review

    The integration of technology in English as a second language (ESL) education is embraced by the educational institution and yet becomes a growing trend in today’s 21st century ESL classroom. The integration of techno-pedagogical approach in ESL classroom was critically examined in this systematic literature review by addressing three main research topics, the factors that ensure the effective integration of techno-pedagogical approach, yet the potential benefits and challenges of the implementation of this approach in ESL classroom. To review current studies, preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) were adopted and two core journal databases, namely Scopus and Web of Science were utilized to review on 30 articles published in 2019-2023. A comprehensive overview that aids in understanding the intricate problems related to technology integration in ESL classrooms for educators and policymakers was provided and the delicate balance needed for integration to be effective, acknowledging the benefits and challenges of implementing techno-pedagogical approaches in ESL classroom was highlighted. Lastly, several recommendations that needed to be the subject of further investigation were made at the conclusion of this study

    Examining the trends of research on educators’ readiness in online teaching & learning (2013-2022): a bibliometric analysis

    Despite recent emphasis, the usage of online and blended learning as instructional methodologies in higher education is still unequal, leading to variations in students’ learning experiences across structures, areas, and programs. Research on the aspects concerning educators’ adoption and adaptation of online teaching is crucial to overcome this limitation. By using the terms ‘Educators AND Online Learning AND Readiness’, 391 journal articles were listed for further analysis. Microsoft Excel was used for frequency analysis, VOSviewer to visualize data, Harzing’s Publish or Perish to compute and evaluate citation metrics, and Words Cloud to create a cluster of words that were shown in various sizes. The bibliometric criteria used in this study to summarize results includes language, topic area, research trends by year of publication, top contributors by nation, most significant institution, and name of the active source and others. This research includes a citation analysis, an authorship analysis, and keyword analysis. The results show that from 2013 to 2022, the rate of publication increased, and a spike was seen from 2019 to 2020 due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Identification of the important blended learning outcome predictors will help with the initial planning of this creative pedagogical strategy

    Mobile augmented reality in learning chemistry subject: an evaluation of science exploration

    Various technologies have been used in making teaching and learning sessions more effective, fun, and enjoyable. One of the ways to make teaching and learning interactive is by emphasizing the use of mobile augmented reality (MAR). Thus, this study has proposed using MAR for a chemistry subject, namely science exploration (SCIENEX). This study adopted design and development research (DDR) by employing the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model. The phases involved in DDR are ADDIE. SCIENEX was evaluated based on its validity, usability, and effectiveness. Five experts validated SCIENEX after it had been completely developed. The samples for usability testing and effectiveness of SCIENEX were 30 secondary school students who were studying chemistry. The results of the evaluation of the experts’ validation revealed that SCIENEX is a valid and appropriate MAR application for the learning of topics in chemistry. The result also revealed that the majority of students strongly agreed that SCIENEX is appropriate for the usage of MAR in learning chemistry, as it is fun, easy to use, and helps students to understand their learning. Interestingly, SCIENEX could increase students’ performance in their learning (t=21.754; p=0.000). Thus, it can be concluded that SCIENEX is valid, can be used for learning chemistry, and can help students in their learning. The limitations of this study and future suggestions for research are also discussed
