The shifting classroom: impact of heightened seasonal heat in education through sentiment and topic modeling
Get PDFThis research applies text mining techniques to examine sentiments and themes among Filipino students adjusting to full in-person classes after pandemic-driven flexible learning, focusing on their experiences during April to June 2023–a period usually marked by vacations due to intense heat. By applying the natural language toolkit (NLTK) for sentiment analysis and Scikit-learn for topic modeling, the study gathered data from Filipino students on their in-person class experiences during this unique calendar shift. Post data cleaning, NLTK was used for sentiment analysis and latent Dirichlet allocation for topic modeling. The findings indicate that the high temperatures adversely affected students, as evidenced by frequent references to terms such as “room,” “focus,” and “hard.” The study identified a mix of positive and negative sentiments and highlighted key issues like academic challenges and the learning environment’s impact. This study also offered insights into students’ coping strategies during extreme heat. These results stressed the importance of considering environmental factors in educational planning and provide actionable insights for institutions to enhance the in-person learning experience, particularly in challenging weather conditions. Moreover, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of sentiment analysis and topic modeling in understanding and unraveling student experiences in specific contexts
The effectiveness of parental assistance-based online learning model on self-efficacy
Get PDFThe obstacles experienced during online learning are inevitable circumstances. Hence, students need to have motivational beliefs that they have the ability to thrive in online learning despite its difficulties. Applying parental-based online learning is expected to help students increase their self-efficacy. This study examines the effect of using an online learning model based on parental assistance on students’ self-efficacy with a quantitative approach. This type of research is quasi-experimental, with a pre and post-test control group design by studying seventh-grade students in several public junior high schools in Kisaran. The study found that applying an online learning model based on parental assistance improved students’ self-efficacy more than a conventional online learning model. Consequently, parental assistance will make a practical contribution to the implementation of learning, especially in the implementation of online learning in the era of the pandemic and after the COVID-19 pandemic
The role of parents and communities in promoting entrepreneurial careers for vocational high school students
Get PDFAn ironic situation has emerged where vocational school graduates, who are trained to be work-ready, have the highest unemployment rates. This study investigates the role of the community and students’ parents in promoting entrepreneurial careers among vocational school students in Malang, Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach, the research was conducted at three vocational high schools through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. Data reliability was ensured through credibility measures such as triangulation, verifying sources, and enhancing reference materials’ consistency and sufficiency. A multi-case design with constant comparative analysis was employed. The findings reveal several key roles of parents and communities in fostering entrepreneurship, namely: i) Entrepreneurship is taught theoretically and practically through business incubation, the Creative Entrepreneurship Program, and managing school business units; ii) Parents support entrepreneurship by purchasing students’ products, stocking the school canteen, collaborating in product sales, and participating in brainstorming sessions; iii) Schools partner with local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and national and international companies to train students; and iv) The community and parents assist in marketing students’ products, and some businesses related to the school’s program serve as practice venues for students. This study contributes theoretically as a reference on the role of parents and the community in encouraging entrepreneurship in vocational schools. Practically, it serves as a guide for school administrators to involve parents and the community in school entrepreneurial activities
A systematic literature review of the impact of gamification instruction on students’ problem-solving skills
Get PDFGamification is a popular approach to teaching and learning in education in recent years, it provides the flexible integration of various game elements into educational activities to achieve instructional objectives. This approach has the potential to enhance student skills through interactive communication and motivation and has, sparked interest and discussion in many fields, including education. This review assesses the impact of gamification on student skills in terms of teaching methods, learning outcomes, and challenges faced. The study analyzed 21 research articles from three databases, Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, and ERIC, up to November 2023. The findings were grouped into three main themes: teaching implementation and methods (8 articles), learning outcomes and skill development (8 articles), and challenges and improvement strategies (5 articles). The findings suggest that although gamification has gained more results in the field of education, especially in terms of improving students’ skills and teaching effectiveness, there are shortcomings in integrating it with professional education. This review mainly highlights the impact of gamification in the development of students’ skills while considering gamification in conjunction with other aspects of education to illustrate the need for ongoing research and further exploration in the field of education
E-aviation speaking preparation test for aviation vocational school
Get PDFAn e-module aviation speaking preparation test has been developed to support cadets of aviation vocational schools in preparing English language proficiency tests. This research aimed to assess whether there was an improvement in cadets’ aviation speaking preparation test scores after studying the E-Module. A sample of 120 cadets participated in the study to examine the effect of E-Module aviation speaking preparation test to enhance aviation speaking abilities. The validation test score of 89.5% indicates that the E-Module aviation speaking preparation test is very valid for usage. Independent sample T-test results revealed differences between pretest and posttest scores of the e-module aviation speaking preparation test for cadets at both aviation polytechnics. Paired T-test results indicated that cadets who utilized the E-Module achieved higher learning with a significance value of (0.000)<α (0.05). The correlation between pretest and posttest scores and the learning outcomes of the E-Module aviation speaking preparation test showed a relatively high level of correlation, with a coefficient of 0.480 and a significance value of Sig (2-tailed=0.000)<½ α (0.025). These findings suggest that the E-Module aviation speaking preparation test effectively enhances the aviation English speaking abilities of cadets
Spiritual leadership and lecturer performance: mediating role of work motivation
Get PDFSpiritual leadership developed from intrinsic motivation is based on ethical and moral values that align with the education system. However, the research is limited in the context of higher education institutions. Therefore, this study aims to provide an understanding of the effect of spiritual leadership on lecturer performance through work motivation. The research design was quantitative, with 120 samples of permanent lecturers in private higher education institutions who have obtained lecturer certificates. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using Smart-PLS. The results showed that spiritual leadership affects lecturer performance and work motivation. In addition, work motivation plays a mediating role with a high effect size. Hence, these findings can serve as a basis for higher education institutions to develop more inclusive and inspiring leadership strategies that integrate spiritual values and create a more motivating work environment for lecturers
Pronunciation therapy for deaf students in coping with Arabic letter difficulties
Get PDFPronunciation therapy for deaf students is a very important context within the sphere of the Quran learning. Previous investigations in this domain predominantly focused on media and visual approaches, neglecting the discussion of Arabic letter pronunciation therapy (phonetically). Therefore, this research aimed to elucidate various forms of pronunciation therapy designed for deaf students and the underlying factors motivating the use of the therapeutic techniques. This descriptive qualitative research relied on the primary data collected through an investigation conducted at Qotrunnada Islamic Special School (SLB) in Bantul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The primary data comprised the diverse methods applied in Arabic letter pronunciation therapy and the determinant factors of articulation disorders. The research subjects were limited to pure deaf students, categorized by age and the length of therapy. Each student exhibited different results of assessment and response to pronunciation therapy. Moreover, data validation was performed through interaction with the school principal as the research team. The results showed that the forms of pronunciation therapy included articulation therapy (phonetically) exercises addressing sound production, as well as interventions targeting attention and behavior for deaf students in coping with Arabic letter difficulties. This contribution would serve as a basic guide in the development of instruments for Arabic letter pronunciation therapy designed for students with special needs
Development of growth mindset in higher education in support of the World-Class University
Get PDFThis study aims to develop a tool to measure the growth mindset of university lecturers, which is associated with performance and professionalism in institutions, especially at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) to go to a World-Class University (WCU). This research is a research and development (R&D) research with a quantitative approach measuring the quality of university growth mindset instruments. The measuring tool developed is a questionnaire using the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) method. The results of each indicator are analyzed and integrated with structural equation modeling (SEM). The results of the growth mindset study of the academic community at UNY. The growth mindset instrument construct for the academic community is qualified to measure the ability of growth mindset from lecturers. The results show that the developed instruments show a valid and reliable construct. Advanced analysis by multiple regression method with path analysis shows that the academic level is the moderate variable with the most influence on the growth mindset path analysis model. Increasing the academic level will optimize the growth mindset of lecturers; performance will evolve
The effects of mobile technologies on the level of student involvement
Get PDFIn the modern world, there is a conscious interest in improving education quality with the help of modern information technologies. Innovative m-learning technology expands the possibilities and increases the effectiveness of training. Experiments conducted in European countries showed that the use of mobile devices positively affected academic performance, discipline, and interpersonal relationships among participants in the educational process. However, currently, practical research only generally concerns the issue of increasing foreign student involvement in the educational process. The purpose of the study is to experiment and obtain new data confirming the effectiveness of mobile technologies in increasing foreign student involvement in the educational process. The developed mobile technology-based course was introduced into the educational system of the university. The program included traditional and practical classes. The study confirms the effectiveness of mobile learning technology. A statistical data analysis showed positive dynamics in the indicators of the experimental group. The final data of the experimental group differed significantly from the initial ones: the average indicator of 2.9 (average involvement level) increased to 4 (+1.1). Based on the developed course using mobile learning, it is possible to create and practically implement new educational programs for universities
Integrative approach for reading comprehension espousing information communication technology literacy
Get PDFThis study aimed to investigate the effects of an integrative approach on students’ reading comprehension, using information and communication technology (ICT) and reading comprehension, the students’ digital literacy and reading comprehension. The quantitative method used an analytical study with cross-sectional research. The data was collected through a questionnaire. There were 473 primary schools with a total of 16,286 children (8,476 male students and 7,810 female students) selected at random as a sample of 400 learners in elementary schools. The findings showed that the integrative approach has a beneficial effect of using ICT and students’ reading comprehension and reading literacy. The use of an integrative approach for reading comprehension and using ICT can promote students’ digital literacy. The student’s reading comprehension and the integrative approach technique were favorable, as seen by the students’ excitement and seriousness. The utilization of this integrative approach can enhance the student’s ability to comprehend reading comprehension and get effectiveness and efficiency of the Indonesian language. This study provides integrated reading-literacy technology (IRLT) that significantly impacts reading comprehension through the use of ICT and an integrative approach in the reading instruction
