Vodcast as ideating medium in STEM lesson plan in teaching heat transfer
This study attempts to link the clay soil in the locality to the topic of heat transfer as a contextualization point. It attempted to slightly modify the seven-step STEM lesson by having the part of the prototyping be first tried by the teacher, thereby having a change-of-hat to anticipate the ‘what if’ questions of the students. The teacher-researchers experimentation provided critical information to scaffold the students in the prototyping part. The evaluation of experts shows that the modified STEM lesson can be an excellent tool and the vodcast has been found to be a very satisfactory component of the STEM lesson. It is described as a very useful material in teaching heat transfer and related thermodynamics concepts and is highly recommended for use in both distance learning and face-to-face modality. Further, the clay oven exploration has come up with a refined clay oven production process, wherein the clay oven prototype has the capacity for the contextualization of heat transfer. It is recommended that a formal implementation be conducted to refine and standardize the lesson delivery
Undergraduates’ experience and satisfaction of massive open online course in Malaysia
While massive open online course (MOOC) is gaining popularity, studies have shown how negative user experience of the learning platform can lead to issues related to poor learning performance. OpenLearning, as the official national coordinated MOOCs program for higher education institutions in Malaysia, is still considerably gaining momentum in this country, thus much can still be observed in the usability aspect of this platform from the student’s perspective. This study aimed to evaluate the aspects of user experience and learning satisfaction of MOOC OpenLearning involving undergraduate students in a public university in Malaysia. Data were gathered through the online survey method which adapted questions from the user experience questionnaire (UEQ) and the usefulness, satisfaction, and ease of use (USE) questionnaire. Descriptive analyses revealed moderate positive levels of user experience and learning satisfaction towards MOOC OpenLearning among the respondents. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between both factors, suggesting the importance of considering user experience as the key factor in enhancing students’ satisfaction with MOOC. Recommendations arising from the students’ perceptions and concerns on the usability aspect contribute towards developing strategic guidelines for enhancing students’ learning experiences, especially during circumstances that necessitate effective online learning strategies
Higher order thinking skills in science learning: a systematic review from 2014-2023
This study presents a comprehensive overview related to higher-order thinking skills (HOTs) as well as recommendations for future study opportunities for educators and researchers. This study uses the systematic literature review (SLR) method to present critically the knowledge, ideas, and findings contained in academic-oriented literature. A total of 276 synthesized papers have been selected from the Scopus database. Annual publication frequency, number of documents, research methods, scope of themes, productive journals and proceedings in research, and learning approaches used in improving HOTs are reviewed. The results show that HOTs in science education have been receiving attention from researchers in the last eight years. Based on the 63 documents reviewed, include HOTs in the title and abstract. Proceedings in the Journal of Physics: Conference Series are the most contributors to publishing HOTs in science education. Quantitative methods are more widely adopted in HOTs research than research and development (R&D), qualitative, mixed, and non-empirical methods. In addition, models of teaching are also the most chosen theme in science education, and the most widely used mobile learning approach to increase HOTs. In the future, this study can become a reference for researchers to consider various solutions to maximize HOTs
Online cooperative learning: exploring perspectives of preservice teachers after the pandemic
Mainly, research has explored pre-service teachers’ perspectives toward cooperative learning within face-to-face teaching. However, in a postpandemic scenario, previous research has yet to effectively explore preservice teachers’ (PSTs) perspectives toward online cooperative learning (OCL) in teacher education programs. So, recognizing the gap in the literature, this paper aims to explore the perspectives of PSTs towards OCL. The researchers employed a qualitative research design for the present study. The researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 PSTs who underwent OCL during the pandemic. These PSTs may possess digital proficiency, virtual collaboration abilities, flexibility in evolving educational environments, and an enhanced understanding of online cooperative learning methodologies within modern education. Researchers employed a thematic analysis to analyze the qualitative data obtained. The various themes that emerged from the study are perceived benefits of OCL, challenges to OCL, technological proficiency, learning strategies and support, and building a supportive online learning community. Future researchers may contribute to advancing effective online learning practices by gaining a deeper understanding of pre-service teachers’ perspectives towards OCL through research on a larger scale, including various teacher education programs in various countries
Entrepreneurship skills framework for fostering the employability of industrial technology students
The rising rate of youth unemployment and its attendant consequences on the general populace in Nigeria has assumed a frightening dimension. The academia and other relevant stakeholders have gradually come to realize that the possession of academic qualifications alone cannot guarantee a good quality job. Nigerian higher intuitions are now introducing entrepreneurship studies in their school curriculum without a clear framework. Research has shown that this does not guarantee total graduates unless we have an entrepreneurship skills framework that is functional and discipline-based. Noting that entrepreneurship is classified into two folds; entrepreneurship specific and entrepreneurship mindset, this study intends to develop an entrepreneurship skills framework that will promote the employability of the students of Electrical Technology in Colleges of Education in Nigeria. The survey research that employs the sequential exploratory mixed methods was used for the study. The population for this phase consists of entrepreneurs and academics in Nigeria. The use of the partial credit model in the Rasch analysis model guaranteed the consensus of the experts on each of the items being measured. The outcome of the study will contribute to the social-economic peace and sustainability in Nigeria and the body of knowledge in entrepreneurship regarding electrical technology
Modelling school principals’ soft skills with sustainable administrative effectiveness
Effective school leadership is pivotal to the success of educational institutions. While traditional leadership models have emphasized technical skills and administrative competencies, the significance of soft skills in educational leadership has gained increasing attention in recent years. This study explores the direct and indirect relationship between principals’ soft skills and sustainable administrative effectiveness (SAE). The objectives that guided this study are to investigate the direct and indirect influence of soft skills (critical thinking, empathy, communication, adaptability, and leadership) on the SAE of school principals. Stratified and random sampling techniques were adopted to select the participants. Questionnaires, school principals’ soft skills questionnaire (SPSSQ) and sustainable administrative effectiveness questionnaire (SAEQ), were administered to about 432 teachers. The findings revealed a strong positive correlation between principals’ soft skills and their SAE. Therefore, all soft skills directly relate to SAE except critical thinking skills. Empathy, communication, adaptation and innovation, and leadership skills were found to have direct effect on SAE. Whereas critical thinking has no direct effect on SAE but could influence indirectly SAE through other factors. This ultimately results in the achievement of SAE with indirect relationships. Based on the research outcomes, this study suggests that school administrators should invest in professional development programs to enhance principals’ soft skills to achieve SAE
The effect of ethnography-based outdoor learning methods on elementary students’ activities and learning outcomes
The cultural approach as a social studies learning resource can be carried out using ethnography-based outdoor learning methods for elementary school students. It adopts a quantitative research methodology employing experimental techniques. The population used is class V (fifth-grade) students in a sub-district. The number of students identified was 172. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Purposive sampling was utilized to select participants, dividing them into experimental and control groups. The quasi-experimental approach employed a posttest-only design with a nonequivalent group procedure. Hypothesis testing was selected to further examine the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), was employed to analyze questionnaire responses and learning results, yielding a significant value of 0.000, which is less than 0.005, thus accepting the alternative hypothesis (Ha). The findings indicate statistically significant influence of ethnography-based outdoor learning activities for both students’ engagement and academic performance in fifth-grade classrooms. These results underscore the potential of integrating indigenous knowledge-based learning innovations into elementary education
Examining the psychometric properties of the deputy-principal mentoring questionnaire
This article intends to inspect and validate the Malay language version of the self-developed instrument on informal leadership mentoring used by principals with their deputy principals in the Malaysian primary school context. This article relies on the survey responses by 318 Malaysian primary deputy principals. Descriptively, the responses to all 25 items produced high mean scores which indicated that deputy principals are well-satisfied with the mentoring and guidance provided to improve their leadership prowess. Based on exploratory factor analysis, three factors emerged: guidance, informal approaches, and substituting principals in official meetings. However, the third factor was removed because it was only represented by one item. Thus, there are two major factors: guidance and informal approaches with 24 items, all of which had high factor-loading values and were consistent in their internal validity. In addition, the average variance extracted and composite reliability were also calculated which received acceptable values. Lastly, the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) results indicated that all 24 items achieved acceptable values
Enhancing critical thinking and academic achievement through different learning
This research examines the impact of implementing different learning models on students’ critical thinking abilities (CTS) with different academic achievements. This research was a quasi-experiment and involved 134 high school students in Jember. Research classes are divided into project-based learning (PjBL) and conventional learning, then divided based on academic achievement, namely high and low. Data was collected using essay exams supported by the CTS assessment rubric. Information was analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and continued with the least significant difference (LSD) test. The research results show that i) there is a significant difference in the development of CTS between students who follow the PjBL learning model and students who follow conventional learning; ii) there are differences in CTS development between high and low-achieving students; and iii) there is an interaction between the learning model and student academic achievement which influences the development of CTS. Based on these findings, it can be interpreted that the PjBL learning model effectively increases the development of CTS in high and low-achieving students, especially in low-achieving students. The PjBL learning model encourages students to be active, think critically, work together and solve problems. Teachers can improve the critical thinking skills of students with low academic abilities through the PjBL learning model
Ethnocultural wisdom and development of e-comic
Cultivating local cultural values by adapting to technological advances, found in digital comic learning media oriented towards local Sasak wisdom, provides ease of learning and communicative language and is easy to access but still needs to be improved. The research aims to develop digital comic media that is feasible, practical and effective, oriented towards Sasak local wisdom (e-kodisa). The development stage uses the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation (ADDIE). The research results show that digital comic media oriented towards Sasak local wisdom from material experts in category 1 is feasible, and material experts in category 2 are possible. The assessment of digital comic media from Media expert 1 is in the attainable category, and media expert 2 is very doable. The evaluation of learning design experts and language experts is in the very decent category. Trials on students show that digital comic media is practical and can be used in learning. The results of the effectiveness test showed sig. (2-tailed)<0.05 Ho is rejected, and Ha is accepted, meaning a significant difference exists between the pretest and posttest averages. So, developing digital comic media oriented towards Sasak local wisdom is feasible, practical and effective
