Psychometric properties of Indonesian physics motivation questionnaire using Rasch model
The transition to online learning during the pandemic has significantly impacted Indonesian students’ physics learning motivation. Recognizing the need for culturally relevant tools to assess this motivation, this study aims to adapt the physics motivation questionnaire (PMQ) to the Indonesian context. This research, which was conducted on 107 secondary and vocational school students, had a balanced gender distribution and used survey methodology. The PMQ, which was adapted from the biology motivation questionnaire (BMQ) through a rigorous forward-backward translation process, was analyzed for its psychometric properties using the Rasch model. This analysis focuses on the content aspects of construct validity, assessing content relevance, representativeness, and technical quality. The results show that the PMQ, using a 4-point Likert scale, effectively addresses these elements, thus confirming its reliability and applicability in the Indonesian educational environment. This study concludes that the culturally adapted PMQ is a valuable instrument for evaluating Indonesian students’ motivation to study physics, especially in the context of ongoing changes in the educational landscape
Diversifying Quranic revision methods using gamification-based teaching material for tahfiz education
This study discusses the development procedure of the global tahfiz game (GTG) as a teaching aid for the Quranic revision subject for tahfiz students based on the gamification concept. Comprehensive design and development research (DDR) was used as the research method. The analysis includes conceptual and material development, expert evaluation, testing, and the final product. The development of concepts and materials used in this gamification was based on the theoretical framework of mechanics, dynamics, and aesthetics (MDA), with the application of tahfiz education elements. To examine the ability of GTG prototype to tackle the users’ needs, we have conducted the usability analysis. The expert teacher's mean score for the trial run on this gamification was high at 4.85. The trial run score for student participants was also high (4.45). The result demonstrated that most of the constructs are perceived at a high level by respondents. Thus, this indicated the high usability of GTG to be used as a teaching aid for a Quranic revision subject. The gamification of Quranic tahfiz based on board games has been finalized through recommendations and improvements based on the evaluation. The study findings are expected to be useful for educational institutions or researchers in developing teaching materials using the MDA framework for gamification, particularly in the field of Islamic education
New trends in research skills development of future teachers: quantitative approach and empirical studies
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the use of technology and the development of research skills in future teachers, specifically current graduate students participating in Mathematical Olympiads. The study used a quantitative approach and analyzed data collected through a survey. The findings indicated that quantitative analysis skills, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and research methodology skills are the dimensions of research skills in future teachers. The results showed that the use of digital tools for literature searching and curation, online courses and workshops (OCWs), collaborative learning and discussion forums, and data analysis software significantly and positively affected research skills. However, the study failed to provide evidence that digital portfolios (DPs) affected research skills. The limitations of the study and recommendations for future research are discussed. In conclusion, the findings highlight the importance of technology in the development of research skills in future teachers and suggest that technology-based learning resources and tools should be integrated into teacher training programs
Scaffolding instruction for improvement in learning English language skills
Students who learn English as a foreign language (EFL) or English as a second language (ESL) often struggle with limited vocabulary and poor reading comprehension skills. This action research explores the effectiveness of implementing scaffolding instruction for university level EFL/ESL students in improving their language learning skills, namely critical reading, and study skills for reading. A sample of 36 foundation year students was involved in two cycles of intervention. Triangulation of data collection was done after each cycle through student survey (SS), language learning assessment (LLA) tasks and an observation checklist to measure the impact of the proposed practice on the improvement in the participants’ learning. The scaffolding techniques used were soft versus hard (support provided only till needed), chunking (breaking down information), modelling (giving clear examples), bridging (using prior knowledge) and contextualizing (making connections). Both the quantitative and qualitative data revealed that scaffolding instruction significantly improved the participants’ language learning skills. For sustainable education, the findings emphasize the importance of conducting scaffolding instruction in small groups, assigning pre-planned and well-structured tasks with clear instructions, and providing scaffolding ‘as and when needed’ especially in a mixed ability group of EFL/ESL students
Elementary teachers’ pedagogical competencies in supporting students with learning difficulties
Pedagogical competency is one of four competencies that all teachers need to be proficient within the Indonesian National Teaching Standards. Yet, there is limited understanding of how these competencies relate to inclusive education practice. This study used a combination of survey and interview data to explore the pedagogical skills of elementary teachers working in inclusive schools. Survey data showed that teachers utilized a range of accommodations and modifications within their classrooms to assist them to be inclusive of all students. These accommodations and modifications were often associated with support from other persons (e.g., shadow teacher, parents, peers). While teachers expressed frustration with the learning of students, interview data found that teacher frustration was more about their perceived inability to meet the needs of students. Directions for on-going work to investigate and enhance teacher pedagogical competence within the context of inclusive education Indonesia are discussed
Development of higher order thinking skill assessment instruments in social studies learning
Higher order thinking skill (HOTS) in social studies learning are still often ignored by teachers despite the need for students to acquire these skills. The purpose of this study is to develop her HOTS assessment in a social studies classroom to help teachers improve their students’ thinking skills. This kind of research is research and development with 4D models. Validation was performed by two social studies learning assessment specialists and three social studies teachers. The HOTS test was administered to 112 students in class VIII (second grade) of Yogyakarta junior high school. Data analysis consisted of validity, reliability, difficulty, selectivity, and distractor index. Explanatory factor analysis (EFA) pathway analysis was used for data analysis of small trials and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) pathway analysis was used for large trials. The multiple-choice HOTS assessment tool consisted of 30 items, and the effectiveness results of this HOTS questions on material, structure, and language aspects by two social studies learning assessment experts where it was valid and suitable for our application. Effective results for three social studies teachers indicated that the assessment tool was valid and applicable. HOTS in social studies learning helps improve quality and learning outcomes, enabling students to examine information critically, develop creativity, and improve problem-solving skills
Learning media projects with YouTube videos: a dynamic tool for improving mathematics achievement
This research was designed with a descriptive research approach. The research objectives of the study were to: i) investigate the impact of the project task of learning video media on prospective teachers and students; ii) analyze the important role of instructional video media as a learning assistant for students; and iii) describe the function of instructional video media in increasing students’ interest and achievement in learning. This research involved 100 participants consisting of 10 students of a teacher education study program (prospective teachers), and 90 junior high school students. The researchers collected data through tests; questionnaires; and interviews. Researchers analyzed the data through descriptive statistical analysis. The results of the study indicated that the project assignment of making videos for learning (on a YouTube channel) provided a positive impact on learning experiences for teachers (prospective teachers) and students. Mathematics learning video media has a role as a digital native that may help overcome the limitations of students’ knowledge and understanding. Mathematics learning videos on the YouTube channel can be a dynamic tool to increase students’ interest (as an attention, and affective function) and to improve students’ mathematics learning achievement (as a cognitive function)
Predictor of academic performance: personality traits and catechol-O-methyltransferase polymorphisms
Personality traits and genetics are important factors in determining academic performance. Although there have been studies on the association between genetics and academic performance, there is limited data on the effect of personality traits and the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) rs4680 polymorphism on academic performance, particularly among university students in Malaysia. The objective of this study was to correlate the relationship between personality traits, COMT rs4680 polymorphism, and academic performance among health sciences undergraduate students at a Malaysian university. The research design was a correlational study where 221 students were recruited based on the convenient sampling approach. The demographic and international personality item pool (IPIP) questionnaires were administered online, whereas the COMT rs4680 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) was determined using a tetra-primer allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR). From the IPIP results, the conscientiousness trait was positively and significantly correlated with academic performance (r=0.141, p=0.036). Participants with homozygous Met/Met allele of the COMT rs4680 polymorphism tended to perform better in academics (p=0.009) as compared to participants with homozygous Val/Val and heterozygous Val/Met alleles. As a conclusion, students with a higher conscientiousness score and carriers of the homozygous Met/Met allele of COMT rs4680 showed better academic performance
The role of psychological security climate, leadership, and self-efficacy on teachers capability through knowledge management
The study analyzed the relationship of leadership to knowledge management, leadership to innovation capability, psychological security climate to knowledge management, psychological security climate to innovation capability, self-efficacy to knowledge management, self-efficacy to innovation capability, knowledge management to innovation capability. The unit of analysis was vocational teachers and principals of vocational schools. The number of teachers from the respondents education unit is 3,056 teachers. By using the Slovin formula, the minimum number of sample sizes is 354 people and the sampling technique used was simple random sampling. The data analysis technique in this study uses partial least square (PLS). The results of data processing show that leadership has a significant effect on knowledge management, leadership has a significant effect on innovation capability, psychological security climate has a significant effect on knowledge management, psychological security climate has a significant effect on innovation capability, self-efficacy has a significant effect on knowledge management, self-efficacy has a significant effect on innovation capability, knowledge management has a significant effect on innovation capability. This research contributes to improving the quality of curriculum, teachers, and graduates of vocational schools/polytechnics in the 21st century
Exploratory data analysis to reveal learning loss condition in Islamic religious education
One of the negative impacts of this prolonged distance teaching and learning activity during the pandemic is that students lag in absorbing lessons, known as learning loss. Islamic religious education (IRE) as value education, especially in Indonesia, can also cause learning loss. This study aims to identify possible indications of learning loss experienced by madrasa students in IRE. This study uses data science methods with an exploratory data analysis (EDA) approach. Respondents are students in the sixth grade of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI), the ninth grade of Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs), and the twelfth grade of Madrasah Aliyah (MA). The total respondents in this study were 38,326 MI students, 29,350 MTs students, and 13,474 MA students. The results of the EDA found that most madrasas in Indonesia experienced indications of learning loss in IRE subjects during distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, both at the MI, MTS, and MA levels. This study found that the learning loss condition is influenced by various states and readiness for distance learning, both the preparedness of students to learn independently, the availability of digital content that is interesting and easy to understand, as well as the availability of facilities and technology for distance learning
