Developing psychologist attributes in higher educational institutions: case of Kazakhstan
This study’s purpose is to identify the most necessary attributes of a modern psychologist through a survey of practical psychologists, teachers, and students from the Faculty of Psychology, Toraigyrov University. The survey allowed us to develop an effective training program for psychologists. The study involved 115 respondents from Kazakhstan, 60 of them were future psychologists. The respondents took the survey to determine the key attributes of a modern psychologist. The research was also based on literature analysis and generalization, questionaries, and ranking. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was utilized to assess the reliability of the authors’ questionnaire items. SPSS Statistics program was applied for statistical data processing. According to the results, 80% of practical psychologists wanted to improve the curriculum for their students. At the same time, 72% of students believe that the program should primarily be practice-oriented. The students unanimously noted the key quality of the psychologist–empathy. The vast majority (94.1%) mentioned moral principles, and 85.7% indicated authenticity. However, teachers and psychologists did not emphasize the above criteria. The current study aims to develop a basis for an effective training program for future psychologists studying at the universities of Kazakhstan according to their modern needs
The relation of complex problem solving with reflective abstraction: a systematic literature review
Complex problem solving (CPS) is a new paradigm in solving problems and is one of the soft skills needed to face the industrial revolution 4.0. Reflective abstraction is associating and modifying pre-existing conceptions into new situations. This article reviews research on CPS and reflective abstraction. This research is needed to know the relationship between reflective abstraction and CPS. The systematic writing of this review was assisted by the Publish or Perish 7 application, Mendeley, and VOSviewer. A literature search was performed through the ScienceDirect and ERIC databases. Based on the search results with the term “complex problem solving” and several exclusion criteria, 58 articles were found, whereas with the word “reflective abstraction” there were 23 articles, totaling 81 papers. Based on the literature review, it was found that there is a relationship between CPS and reflective abstraction by obtaining common ground in the form of prior knowledge. CPS requires prior knowledge from reflective abstraction to integrate the most relevant information. To improve CPS, efforts and special attention can be made to build initial knowledge through reflective abstraction. This article contributes to further research and becomes a study for the themes of CPS and reflective abstraction in learning and education
An Indonesian-version of the short attitude toward mathematics inventory: a voice from pre-service chemistry teacher
This study aimed to examine the validity of the Indonesian version of the short attitude toward mathematics inventory (ATMI). The adapted inventory was also used for further analysis to explore mathematics attitude of pre-service chemistry teachers across gender. The original ATMI was translated into Bahasa and distributed to 328 participants via the online survey. After preliminary checking for multivariate outliers, all the data were used to analyze the construct validity of structural model using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Furthermore, multigroup analysis with structured mean modelling was conducted to explore the gender effect toward mathematics attitude. All item means, standard deviations and correlation matrix were also explored. The result found that the short form supported the four-factor solution as the original ATMI. Modification indices, standardized regression weight, and squared multiple correlations were used to determine which items to be removed or retained during analysis until standard criteria for model fit reached. This items deletion produced a shorter version of ATMI (19 items) with fairly good internal consistency, both for all items inventory (α=0.92) or for individual subscale (mean α=0.86). Moreover, the t-test on the latent mean value showed no significant difference of attitude toward mathematics between male and female
Active learning pedagogical dimensions: discovering and bridging the pedagogical gaps
Current literatures of active learning widely address pedagogies/approaches and their outcomes, but it does not appear to be a pedagogical consensus regarding the active learning pedagogies/approaches. This situation makes it difficult to gauge the prevalence and practicability of active learning pedagogies/approaches in specific educational levels. This systematic review is aimed to find the consensus of active learning pedagogies/approaches applied in pre-school to tertiary education on the basis of constructivist philosophy and student-centered notion, determine the desirable pedagogical dimensions, discover pedagogical gaps, and offer attention for bridging the gaps. We located seven pedagogical dimensions from teachers’ perspectives of pedagogical features, in terms of pedagogies/approaches and theories/concepts, from 148 publications that were eligible for inclusion after filtered through PRISMA. The learning outcomes or evidence of effectiveness were determined across various pedagogies/approaches in relation to pedagogical dimensions’ manifestation. Content analysis was employed in this work to encode, categorize, and develop themes. As a result, this study highlights the pedagogical gaps between desirable pedagogical dimensions’ manifestation and actual pedagogy attainment at various educational levels and provides suggestion for bridging the gaps to ensure smooth pedagogical transition. The study may serve as a foundation for future active learning pedagogical designs and enrich student-centered learning initiatives
Assessing graduates’ attributes and job performance for program curriculum enhancement
Graduate tracer studies are essential for higher education institutions (HEIs) as valuable information can be uncovered and derived that is useful for curriculum development, revision, or enhancement. This descriptive research study, using a questionnaire as the main data-gathering tool, determined the job attributes and job performance of the Bachelor of Science (BS) Mathematics graduates from 2013 to 2017 from a state university in the Philippines. Results revealed that the graduates were currently employed in various positions in both private and government institutions, with either permanent or contractual status. The graduates identified skills in mathematics, communication, computer, human relations, entrepreneurship, problem- solving, and critical thinking as vital in performing their duties and obligations in the workplace. Overall, the graduates’ job performance is outstanding. Based on the findings, suggestions to improve the BS Mathematics curriculum of the concerned HEIs were discussed to make it more relevant, responsive, adaptive, and inclusive
Adaptation and validation of the children’s cognitive triad inventory for Indonesian students
Depression causes student learning problems. Depressive symptoms are influenced by automatic thoughts that contain a negative cognitive triad. A valid and reliable instrument to measure the cognitive triad in adolescents is essential to identify one of the risk factors for depressive disorders in adolescents. At the same time, Indonesia has no instrument to measure this. This study aims to adapt the children’s cognitive triad inventory (CTI-C) into an Indonesian version and to examine its psychometric properties. Data were collected from 1,184 students aged 13-19 (mean=15.32, SD=1.62) using the 36-item CTI-C. The CTI-C instrument adaptation process refers to the international test commission (ITC). The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed comparative fit index (CFI)=0.95, Tucker-Lewis’s index (TLI)=0.94, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA)=0.071, standardized root mean square residual (SRMR)=0.056, and goodness of fit index (GFI)=0.82, with a load factor range of 0.43-0.80 for the view of self, 0.43-0.68 for the view of the world, and 0.37-0.70 for the view of the future. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient ranged from 0.81 to 0.84 for the subscales and 0.93 for the total score. Thus, the Indonesian version of the CTI-C can measure the cognitive triad in Indonesian students aged 13-19
The validity and reliability of professional learning community instruments in small schools peninsular Malaysia
A professional learning community (PLC) instrument was developed to determine the level of PLC practice in small schools in Peninsular Malaysia. This study was conducted in Perak and Negeri Sembilan to determine the instrument's reliability and validity. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and item reliability analysis were used to determine the questionnaire’s reliability and validity. Next, the average congruence percentage (ACP) is used to determine the reliability test between expert assessors. Experts approved the validity and reliability of the instrument before the EFA test was conducted. All five constructs have high-reliability index values between 0.86–0.95. Next, the EFA analysis shows five dimensions in the PLC instrument with factor loadings ranging from 0.61–0.84. The findings also show that the variance explained in the data is 68.99% with an Eigenvalue greater than 1. This result indicates that all items are received with high approval. In addition, a very high-reliability coefficient value, α=0.96. The results prove that this PLC instrument has high validity and reliability and can measure the level of PLC implementation practices in small schools in Peninsular Malaysia
Corrective feedback on essay writing: English as second language teachers’ and students’ perspectives
Many studies have examined how written corrective feedback (WCF) can raise English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ understanding of language concepts. However, not much is known about how students’ perceptions and preferences could influence the effects of WCF. This study examined how Secondary School Certificate (SSC) students and teachers in Pakistan International School, Saudi Arabia, felt about WCF in writing classes. It aimed to identify the WCF aspects of the target language the students preferred. A questionnaire survey was distributed to 30 SSC-level EFL students and 10 teachers at the school who participated voluntarily in the study. The findings revealed that the students had sympathetic perspectives despite having preferences for WCF. They mainly believed that WCF might help them enhance their language knowledge and writing abilities. Through WCF, they learned what to avoid and how to write better. The teachers also found WCF helpful in enhancing the basic understanding of the target language. The findings showed that the students and teachers believed direct WCF to be the most effective technique for improving the former’s writing abilities, followed by indirect strategies such as underlining errors or providing codes. The research was considered relevant and pertinent as it addressed diverse aspects of WCF
A systematic literature review: how do we support students to become numerate?
Numeracy is the essential skill for life situations that involve mathematical elements and developing students’ numeracy skills is considered a primary goal of mathematics education. Despite its importance, numeracy can be challenging to teach, and it is not a guaranteed result of classroom mathematics learning. Through a systematic literature review, 35 studies about supporting students in becoming numerate in classrooms or courses are explored, this literature review also explained abilities included as numeracy, recommendations for teachers are given as well as some examples was given, also opportunities and directions for further research are identified, including guidelines for enhancing students’ numeracy competence
Predicting preschool moral development with school climate: Fuzzy Delphi approach
Education is vital for a person’s development, especially from an Islamic perspective, where the first goal is to foster a servant attitude, talent, personality, and outlook on life. Preschool education is crucial in nurturing a child's nature, emotions, and cognitive and social skills in the first five years. However, the significance of a good school environment, particularly in moral formation, varies among institutions. Therefore, this article aims to build consensus among experts on the role of school environment and classroom management in preschoolers’ moral development. Eleven-panel members validated the survey instrument with items and analyzed it using the Fuzzy Delphi method (FDM). According to the study, the experts agree that the physical school environment and classroom management are essential for promoting healthy moral development. Expert consensus was obtained on 19 out of 20 items in the physical school environment and classroom management dimension with an expert agreement level greater than 75% with an average (d) value less than 0.2. The undeniable consensus is that the school environment and classroom management play a crucial role in fostering the moral development of preschool children
