Financial relaxation of Islamic rural banks and private schools resilience during COVID-19
The pandemic of COVID-19 has increased tensions between Islamic rural banks and private schools. Many parents lose their jobs and are thus unable to pay their children’s school tuition. Private schools, on the other hand, are heavily reliant on tuition and bank financing. As a result, student enrollment falls, school finances suffer a deficit, many parents and students lose trust in the school, and some students may wish to drop out. This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of financial relaxation on schools’ resilience. It was qualitative research with a case study approach focusing on the causal relationship of an Islamic rural banks with a private school affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta Vocational High School and Islamic rural banks’ Bangun Drajat Warga (BDW). The research finding reveals that BDW Islamic rural banks has implemented financing relaxation three times to ease the school’s burden and it has resulted in an improvement in the school’s resilience by as much as 33%. Besides, due to the high ideological commitment and adaptability of Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta Vocational High School as well as the success of gaining parents’ trust regarding online teaching and learning, there has been an increase in the school tuition by as much as 80%. Although though the COVID-19 epidemic is coming to an end, it is still important to study the financial flexibility of Islamic rural banks and private schools in similar crises in the past to better prepare for the future
Flipped classroom with collaborative learning approach in enhancing writing skills of Indonesian university students
The intention of this study was to examine how a flipped classroom with a collaborative learning approach improved the writing skills of Indonesian higher education students. To achieve the study’s aim of 48 Indonesian higher education participants, the Oxford Quick Placement Test (OQPT) was employed. They were divided into two groups: experiment and control. Following that, as a pre-test, both groups were given a written exam. The experimental class (EC) was then positioned in a flipped classroom. Students were permitted to bring smartphones to class and utilize them while learning, and the flipped classroom was equipped with an internet connection, a laptop, and a projector. The control class (CC) got standard classroom instruction. This strategy was employed until the very last session. The experimental group outperformed the control group on the post-test, according to the results of the independent samples t-test and one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Furthermore, the results revealed a significant difference in post-test performance between the EC and CC
Collaborative mind mapping in RICOSRE learning model to improve students’ information literacy
This research aimed to determine how the reading, identifying problem, constructing solution, solving problem, reviewing and extending problem solution (RICOSRE) learning model integration with collaborative mind mapping affects students’ information literacy in higher education institutions. This quasi-experimental study used a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design. There were 40 multiple-choice questions selected to assess student information literacy. All instruments have been validated and are reliable. The data were collected from 100 participants who were college students enrolled in the environmental pollution course of the biology education degree program at Siliwangi University, Indonesia. To analyze the research data, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used at a 5% level of significance, followed by the least significance difference (LSD) test. The ANCOVA results showed that the RICOSRE-CMM learning model impacted students’ information literacy. LSD scores were significantly different in terms of students’ information literacy. It can be concluded that the RICOSRE-CMM model could enhance each component of information literacy as these components have been integrated into the learning model syntax, which involves a series of information discovery and analysis processes during group work to find a solution to a problem
The cognitive outcome in athletics among physical education teachers
The study aimed to identify the cognitive outcome in athletics for physical education teachers. The descriptive survey method was used and a cognitive test was applied as a measurement tool for data collection, which included 45 items for the fields of study: running, jumping, and throwing, and the study sample consisted of 198 teachers from Irbid First Directorate of Education in the first academic semester 2022/2023. The results showed that the level of the cognitive outcome in athletics for physical education teachers was "average" and that there were no statistically significant differences (α≤0.05) due to the effect of gender in all fields and all total scores, and the results of the study showed that there are significant differences Statistics in favor of more than 10 years experience
Development of diagnostic competencies of educational psychologist in professional training
In the era of globalization, enhancing the development of diagnostic competencies among educational psychologists in Kazakhstan is a crucial aspect of improving higher education quality. The purpose of the study is to substantiate and implement the methodology for the development of diagnostic competencies of future educational psychologists in higher educational institutions of Kazakhstan as a guarantee of their readiness to carry out professional activities. The methodological approach involves developing methods for fostering diagnostic competencies, employing empirical techniques such as comparison, systematization, classification, and generalization of theoretical data, conducting surveys, testing, and modeling training methods for future educational psychologists. An experimental study conducted on the premises of Zhetysu University named after I. Zhansugurov has developed methodological tools to increase the readiness of future educational psychologists for the development of diagnostic competencies in professional training, namely: the implementation of readiness components with selected methods for their formation. After conducting an experimental study, promising areas for improving the methodology of readiness of future educational psychologists for the development of diagnostic competencies in Kazakhstan were established
Applications of machine learning in operational aspects of academia: a review
Educational institutions, propelled by digital transformation and sophisticated machine learning (ML) algorithms, amass plentiful data, facilitating the execution of complicated decision-making tasks previously inconceivable. ML’s pervasive influence extends beyond pedagogy and research, profoundly altering the fabric of academia and reshaping university functionalities. Its deployment in university administration enhances efficacy, efficiency, and operational streamlining across diverse levels. This article conducts a comprehensive review of extant knowledge pertaining to the diverse applications of ML in non-teaching domains within academic settings, delineating avenues for future research. The recognized findings furnish a robust foundation for the further exploration and refinement of ML applications, particularly within the administrative and operational realms of academia. A consequential outcome of this transformative integration is the mitigation of teachers’ administrative burdens. In practical terms, this liberation affords educators the opportunity to redirect their time and energy towards their primary responsibilities of educating and fostering the intellectual development of their students
Home learning environment in early years and Greek parents’ socio-demographics
The home learning environment (HLE) is the first environment in which children’s early learning takes place. A number of studies have provided empirical evidence that the HLE contributes to children's cognitive, socio-emotional development. This study addresses the question of the factors that can be associated with creating a positive learning environment for children at home. Pilot quantitative data was collected from 324 families through a questionnaire about the activities parents get involved with their children. The frequency of reading-related activities as well as other in-home and out-of-home learning activities was calculated. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was employed to assess the relationship between parent education levels and activities within the HLE. Questionnaire reliability was examined using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The results showed that the gender and educational level of parents had no influence on the frequency of their involvement in the activities or the type of activities they chose to engage. However, the parents’ educational level has an impact on their beliefs, which influence the provision of learning opportunities and the quantity and quality of parent-child interactions. Further research on parental guidance or children's academic performance could collect more information on the factors that can create a more stimulating HLE
Effect of missing values on the matching item in the graded model
The study aimed to examine the effect of the percentage of missing values on the matching of the items of the graded model. To achieve this, the experimental approach was followed in conducting the study, as hypothetical data were used to simulate the experimental conditions represented by the percentage of missing values. It has three levels (5%, 10%, and 20%). Moreover, the compensation method is represented by simple regression. The study found that there were no statistically significant differences in the percentage of items matching the graded model according to the missing percentages (5% and 10%). Moreover, there were statistically significant differences in the percentage of items matching the graded model according to the missing percentages (20%). Therefore, we must use the different nonparametric item response theory (IRT) models because of the good information, it provides to researchers about the test and its items without missing items suitable for this purpose and prejudice—the cumulative response of the subjects
Scientific digital poster assignments: strengthen concepts, train creativity, and communication skills
Student-centered learning promotes the development of students’ knowledge and skills with poster assignments used to ensure their active participation in academics. Therefore, this research aims to explore student competencies in concept strengthening, creativity, and communication skills from working on digital poster project assignments. Research using observation method with a quantitative approach. Data were collected from 86 participants learning plant systematics in their first semester based on the criteria for strengthening the concept, creativity, communication, and student responses. The instruments used for data collection were a poster scoring rubric and a closed questionnaire. Data were analyzed descriptively with simple statistics in the form of average, standard deviation, and percentage. The hypothesis about the correlation of concept strengthening, creativity, and communication was tested with Spearman’s coefficient. The result showed that students made 29 posters with concept strengthening, creativity and communication skills in the very good (3.42±0.49), very good (3.57±0.26), and very good (3.41±0.25) categories, respectively. Student competency shows a positive correlation between communication skills and concept reinforcement and between communication skills and creativity. Students give a positive response to the application of posters in learning in terms of learning experiences, concept strengthening, creativity and communication. Hence, using posters as project assignments in learning helps develop students’ knowledge and skills by acquiring varied experiences
Structural effect of principals change leadership on e-learning effectiveness
The aim of this research was to investigating the structural effect of the principal change leadership on the effectiveness of online-based learning with teacher work commitment and teacher attitudes towards change as mediator variables, which were approached quantitatively. Multilevel stratified proportional random sampling technique is used in sampling, while inclusion criteria are principals and teachers of primary schools who are still active in Kutai Kartanegara, Samarinda and Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis technique is used in this research. The results of the study show that the principals’ change leadership has a direct effect on the effectiveness of online-based learning, as well as an indirect effect through teacher work commitment and teacher attitudes towards change. This research contributes both theoretically and practically, where the change leadership demonstrated by the principal can ideally encourage teacher work commitment and teacher attitudes towards change, which in turn can promote the effectiveness of the implementation of online learning, as an effort to meet student learning needs
