A systematic review on the formative assessment practice in teaching and learning in secondary school
Formative assessment is an assessment that is conducted throughout the teaching and learning process. Therefore, teachers should play an important role in mastering the appropriate approaches to practicing formative assessment. According to previous studies, some teachers are unable to comprehend the roles of formative assessment practices in teaching and learning, which prevents them from using them effectively in the classroom. Many researchers have conducted research related to the practice of formative assessment in schools due to this issue. Therefore, this article aims to conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) on past studies related to the practice of formative assessment in teaching and learning in secondary schools. This SLR writing process has been referred to as the Preferred Reporting Items for systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA) writing standard. To find related articles and resources in this systematic literature review, two main databases, namely Web of Science and Scopus, were used. A total of 19 articles were extracted from 366 from 2017 to 2021, with exceptions and inclusion criteria considered. Based on the theme analysis, this SLR has three main themes: assessment diversity; assessment strategies, and student learning development. Thus, this study suggests that all compulsory levels of education understand formative assessment conceptually and its implementation comprehensively. This can be disseminated through teacher professional development training programs. It is hoped that such programs will develop teachers who are committed to integrating the concept and practice of assessment for the benefit of students in twenty-first century education
Mapping literature of multicultural education: a bibliometric review
The value of multicultural education is acknowledged on a global scale, despite the fact that various barriers prevent its complete implementation. These include cultural, linguistic, religious, economic, difference in physical condition, and ethnic backgrounds. By assessing publishing trends, extracting data on author keyword trends, examining conceptual evolution, and establishing possible future research on this topic using the Scopus database. This study found that publications grew in quantity from 2013 to 2022, decreased in 2015 and 2018 but were not significant, and 2021 was the highest peak with 221 documents. With 111 publications, the United States is the most prolific and co-authored with authors from Canada, China, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and South Korea. Based on thematic evolution, ‘subspace-clustering’, ‘conversational-system’, ‘aortic-aneurysm’, ‘Bayesian-network-classifier’, are themes or topics that have recently developed. By utilizing these important terms, the study of multicultural education can be examined more thoroughly and more extensive in the future in order to learn new knowledge. In conclusion, this research has the potential to contextualize previous research on the topic and create an evidence-based practice paradigm for future studies grounded in science
An exploratory study on perceived online learning experience of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the pace of online learning amidst the health crisis unprecedentedly. Students worldwide witnessed the transition of the education system from physical classes to virtual mode and adapted themselves to accommodate the challenges and sustain the learning process. This study was carried out to understand the emotional factors and student engagement in various activities during the pandemic and to examine the perceived learning experience. The present study explored the perceived experience of university students in online learning in India. The study used a survey method and data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Results showed that students adapted to online education in the later phase better than the initial stage. The study reported increased stress levels among students. A two-way group analysis of selected variables (gender, age, stress, and loneliness) on perceived learning issues demonstrated significant results. The study’s findings revealed students’ experiences in online learning practice and develop the scope for further discussions to improve the learning process in online settings
Spice plants as a biology learning resource based-education for sustainable development
Studying biology has research topics that are closely related to all the living things around the student and important for them to understand thoroughly. One of the local potentials in the environment around students that can be used as a source of learning biology is spice plants. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The research aims to describe the spice plants in the Botanical Smartpark, which can be used as learning resources. The result of this research shows that there are 57 species and 27 families of spice plants found at the Botanical Smartpark, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Spice plant biology objects can be used in biology learning by using project-based learning and socio-scientific issues-based learning models. In addition, this local potential can support education for sustainable development (ESD), through environmental conservation
Technology-based learning interventions on mathematical problem-solving: a meta-analysis of research in Indonesia
Mathematical problem-solving is important for learning mathematics and is needed in the 21st century. In the 21st century, education technology has been complementing every learning activity. Research on learners’ mathematical problem-solving improvement increased rapidly over the last few decades. This study examined the effectiveness of technology-based mathematics learning interventions on learners’ mathematical problem-solving at all levels of education in Indonesia. The researchers only took meta-analysis research from 2015 to 2023 from indexing databases, such as Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Science and Technology Index (SINTA) indexers. The collected research articles were from only national journals in Indonesia. The screened data became the research results, containing the mean, standard deviation, number of samples (N), and the scale used in the research. This research had 19 independent studies in this meta-analysis. The data analysis applied meta-analysis, specifically the mean effect size value. The results of data analysis using Jeffrey’s Amazing Statistics Program (JASP) software showed the effective implementation of innovative and fun technology-based mathematics learning interventions. These findings highlighted the importance of incorporating technology into mathematics education and its potential for improving learners’ problem-solving skills
The role of social support on vocational school students’ career choices
Strengthening career choices for vocational students is essential in preparing them to enter the world of work. Many studies highlighted the importance of career choices that are by the areas of expertise for vocational students and even examine the mechanism for strengthening their career choices. However, limited studies still focused on testing models for forming career choices by involving social support, career self-efficacy, and vocational identity in an integrative manner. Therefore, this study investigated the model of developing student career choices by applying for social support, career self-efficacy, and vocational identity. This study used structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis with Amos 18 software. The study results revealed that social support, career self-efficacy, and vocational identity factors directly influence vocational students’ career choices. In addition, career self-efficacy mediates the effect of social support on career choice. Finally, vocational identity moderates the interaction of the independent variables (social support and career self-efficacy) and the dependent variable (career choice). The results of this study provided important implications for lecturers to implement learning strategies that aim to strengthen vocational students’ career choices
Employability of accountancy graduates of a Philippine public university
The Isabela State University aims to develop graduates equipped with skills and competence required by the industry. The graduate tracer research helps assess graduates’ employability and establish the elements that serve as a framework for enhancing students’ services and instruction. The snowball sampling was adopted and a modified questionnaire was sent via social media to Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) graduates between 2007 to 2019. There were 111 questionnaires fully accomplished received from the graduates. The results of the study show that the most significant factors contributing to employability were their educational qualifications and professional examinations. All the respondents are employed, but they found the BSA curriculum wanting in providing students with the opportunity to develop accounting skills and better prepare themselves for professional examinations. As such, the graduates recommend extending the BSA curriculum to 5 years; the on-the-job-training (OJT) program with accounting firms, and adding the required course audit. Further, to increase the graduates’ employability, the university shall provide students with the opportunity to experience the use of accounting software in actual business operations
Career-focused teaching and its effects on students’ biology-technical-vocational-fused skills
The K to 12 program in the Philippines, initiated in 2012, brought about challenges like job mismatch among senior high school (SHS) graduates. Addressing this issue requires integrating technical-vocational-livelihood (TVL) skills with core subject skills, particularly in biology. This study explores how the career-focused teaching approach (CFTA) nurtures biology-technical-vocational-fused skills (BTVFS). Using a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design, two grade 11 classes (35 students each) participated-one exposed to CFTA and the other to conventional teaching. Quantitative data from a researcher-made BTVFS questionnaire were analyzed with an independent samples t-test, revealing significant differences in all BTVFS subcomponents; t(68)=3.670, p<0.036. Qualitative data from reflective journals aligned with BTVFS subskills (metacognition, communication, problem-solving, and collaboration). CFTA proved instrumental in enhancing the BTVFS of students, emphasizing its importance in the curriculum across SHS core subjects to mitigate job mismatch for K to 12 graduates
Moroccan pre-service elementary teachers: attitudes toward STEM education and mobile devices
The purpose of this study was to explore Moroccan pre-service elementary teachers' attitudes toward integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and the use of mobile devices in integrated STEM education. The research sample was selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected from 226 pre-service teachers in the Bachelor of Education Elementary Specialty (BEES) using a 28-item questionnaire. The validity of the items was tested by factor analysis using the extraction method of principal component analysis with varimax rotation. Reliability tests for the different constructs were conducted by calculating Cronbach's alpha. Frequency, mean, standard deviation and Mann-Whitney tests were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that pre-service elementary teachers have generally neutral attitudes toward integrated STEM education, and they also showed that pre-service teachers' attitudes toward integrated STEM education do not depend on gender or grade level. However, these attitudes are dependent on pre-university studies. Pre-service teachers with a scientific background have significantly more positive attitudes toward integrated STEM education than their counterparts with a literary background. Furthermore, the results of this study also revealed that pre-service teachers have positive attitudes toward the use of mobile devices in integrated STEM education, and these attitudes are not dependent on gender, grade level, or pre-university studies
STEM-based digital disaster learning model for disaster adaptation ability of elementary school students
Efforts are required to enhance community resilience to disasters, especially among elementary school students who are highly vulnerable to losses caused by natural disasters. In previous research, a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) based digital disaster learning model was developed for elementary school students, so further research is needed to determine its effect on the adaptability of elementary school students. This study aimed to assess the impact of the STEM-based digital disaster learning model on the disaster adaptation abilities of elementary school students. This research is a quasi-experimental. The data collection instrument is the disaster adaptation ability essay test questions. The data analysis process uses the help of the SPSS 26 application. The findings found an average difference in students' disaster adaptation abilities between STEM-based digital learning models and conventional learning models. This finding was also reinforced by the post-test average scores of students who studied using STEM-based digital disaster learning models, which were higher than those with conventional learning models. So overall, the STEM-based digital disaster learning model increases elementary school students' disaster adaptation abilities. The implications of this research can be used as a reference in developing elementary school students' disaster adaptation abilities
