    Design and validation of research capability test for educators

    Assessing the research capability of educators yields implications for bridging the gap and addressing concerns along research. Accordingly, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) highlighted substantive research concerns which need to be given attention specifically in enhancing research capabilities of graduate students, research staff, and faculty which calls for a well-designed and validated research capability test (RCT). Thus, this study established the RCT’s validity and reliability to gauge the knowledge of educators in conceptualizing, implementing, and publishing research. The developed RCT underwent series of critiquing, content validation from experts, and internal and external pilot testing. The study has generated 80 items with desirable difficulty index (50.76), reasonably good discrimination index (0.28), and large functioning distractors (78.97% distractor efficiency). Remarkably, there is a significant association between distractor efficiency and difficulty index of the items with an inter-item consistency of α=0.904. Thus, the RCT is a valid and reliable instrument to gauge the research capability of educators

    Scalar consistency of collaborative learning: bifactor structural equation modeling

    The way of learning in higher education needs a revaluation, which should consider cooperation as one of the principles to improve the cognitive, procedural, and attitudinal learning of students whose training will allow them to integrate effectively into the work environment. The objective of the study was to validate the consistency of the collaborative learning scale (CLS) using the bifactor structural equation model (SEM) in university students from Junín. It presented a quantitative approach, through a deductive method, of demonstrative and inferential scope and a non-experimental design. The sample was of the probabilistic type, composed of 361 students of the Faculty of Health Sciences from cycles I to VIII at Huancayo University-2023. The results verified that the use of an original bifactor SEM allows the identification of multidimensional sources present in complex psychological measures, such as the evaluation instrument under study. In conclusion, thanks to the analysis of the Chi-square differences between the second-order model and the bifactor model, it can be verified that the bifactor model has a better fit than the second-order model because it has a lower X², a lower root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), a lower weighted root mean residual (WRMR), and a higher ω

    Enhancing the scientific argumentation skills of prospective chemistry teacher using integrated chemical literacy strategy

    This research aims to enhance prospective chemistry teachers’ scientific argumentation skills through integrated chemical literacy strategy (ICLS) learning and to examine the patterns of relationship between students’ scientific argumentation skills in terms of content and socio-scientific issues (SSI). The study used mixed methods: the embedded design with embedded experimental model. The research sample was 88 students, the control and the experimental groups each consisted of 44 students. The research instrument used scientific argumentation skills test: an open and closed essay test, and interviews with 10 students as selected respondents. Data analysis used descriptive analysis, N-gain, Mann-Whitney test, effect size test, and qualitative analysis. The results showed that ICLS significantly had a great influence on enhancing students’ scientific argumentation skills. The interview results show that: the level of scientific argumentation skills related to SSI is not consistently related to content-related scientific argumentation skill; students who have scientific argumentation skills related to SSI levels 4, 3, and 2 can provide the correct claim, data, warrant, backing, and rebuttal to scientific arguments related to content if guided by guiding questions; student that had higher level of scientific argumentation skills need fewer guiding questions

    Exploring the correlation of self-perception on the use of digital literacy in learning

    The rapid development of technology in the era of the fourth industrial revolution requires teachers to have good digital literacy competencies to present interactive, current, and adaptive learning. In line with this condition, this research aims to map prospective teachers’ digital literacy competency levels and explain the relationship between sub-areas of competency in digital literacy. The method used is quantitative, with validity testing using the reference value of item-total correlation, reliability testing using the reference value of Cronbach’s alpha, and normality testing using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The levels of prospective teachers’ digital literacy competencies are mapped through descriptive quantitative analysis. Then, the correlation between competency areas is analyzed using bivariate correlation tests. The results of this study show that the majority of prospective teachers, accounting for 72.32%, have a moderate level of digital literacy competencies with a digital literacy index of 3.67. The relationship between measured sub-areas of digital literacy competencies shows a positive relationship. Still, it does not indicate a substantial correlation, indicating that more than the high scores on the digital literacy index and information is needed to support the competence of prospective teachers in creating digital content. This research is beneficial for higher education institutions in improving the digital literacy skills of prospective teachers. To enhance the digital literacy competencies of prospective teachers from a moderate level to a high level, there is a need for programs that strengthen the collaborative and communication sub-areas of competencies and programs that enhance the data and information literacy sub-areas

    Virtual reality technologies for learning English: an example of using Immerse

    This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using the Immerse virtual reality technology as an additional tool for learning English. The sample consisted of 120 students randomly selected from the lists of third-year students studying English as a foreign language according to their bachelor’s degree curriculum. The overall sample was divided into two groups. Immerse was a virtual reality technology used for training in an experimental group for three months. The results showed that in the experimental group, there was a significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test (0.35<0.05). In the control group, there were no relevant changes. In particular, these data show that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in terms of academic performance in English. However, some of the tasks that tested writing skills showed unsatisfactory results. In general, although virtual reality (VR) does not affect students’ writing skills, its use is crucial for their long-term memorization

    Challenges encountered by newly arrived Thai students when learning Indonesian as a foreign language

    This study aimed to determine the challenges faced by Thai international students when they first came to Indonesia to study Indonesian as a foreign language. There were nine Thai students studying in six different cities in Indonesia were recruited as participants. The thematic analysis revealed two major themes: academic challenges and technological issues. Both made it difficult for Thai students to master the Indonesian language effectively. The condition potentially hinders their academic success when studying in Indonesia. However, the researchers found that despite the language barrier, Thai students still tried to speak Indonesian with Indonesian students and residents. It indicates that Thai students in this study were highly determined, friendly, and open to new cultures. Furthermore, the researchers advise teachers and program organizers to pay attention to these challenges to maximize the learning output

    Professional and personal traits of the teacher and the relationship with didactic strategies

    During the context of virtual classes due to the pandemic, it was evidenced that many teachers had to face accelerated adaptation stages, which is why teachers presented difficulties in designing their teaching strategies and students showed certain difficulties in their learning. In this sense, this article aims to determine how the professional and personal traits of the teacher are related to their teaching strategies, in the context of COVID-19, from the perspective of the students. For which an investigation was developed with a quantitative approach, correlational level and non-experimental design. It was determined that there is a moderate direct relationship between the professional and personal traits of the teacher with his didactic strategies in the context of virtual teaching. Thus, it was also identified that teachers do not pour their professional experiences into the development of the subject, additionally it does not favor the solution of problems related to real life applications; this leads teacher to reflect on the importance of the construction of student knowledge, especially if it is about subjects that are taught in the last cycles, since the student is waiting for how and in which processes their knowledge will be applied theoretical knowledge

    Motivation mediating effect on principals’ personality, job satisfaction, and affective commitment

    Affective commitment is ultimately carried out by a leader in an organization, including in high schools. This study mainly aims to examine the influence of personality and job satisfaction on the affective commitment of high school principals mediated by motivation. A quantitative survey was employed in this study. The sample studied was 90 public high school principals in Jakarta, Indonesia. The data were collected through a questionnaire, which has been tested for validity and reliability. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS 3.0 software. The results showed a significant relationship between the public school principals’ personality and job satisfaction on their affective commitment which is mediated by motivation. In more detail, the results indicated: i) a positive direct effect of personality on affective commitment, personality on motivation, and job satisfaction on the motivation of public school principals; ii) no significant direct effect of job satisfaction on affective commitment; and iii) a mediating role of motivation, that directs to a positive and significant influence on personality, job satisfaction, and principals’ affective commitment. The study’s implications for related authorities are presented

    Structural equation modelling: validation of career readiness model using psychological constructs

    The career readiness model is needed as a reference source for relevant parties, especially universities, to implement various career development and interventions initiatives. This study was conducted to assess the reliability and validity of personality, career efficacy, career readiness skills along with indicators using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling in forming a career readiness model. Results show that each construct achieved good reliability and validity through composite reliability (CR) readings recorded between 0.78 and 0.92 to measure internal consistency reliability, while convergent validity through average variance extracted (AVE) readings exceeded 0.5. The construct of this model had also achieved discriminant validity through the recorded readings of cross loading, Fornell-Larcker and HTMT confidence intervals which did not contain the value of 1. The findings also indicate that career efficacy and career readiness skills are accurate and relevant constructs for developing a career readiness model

    The influence of school climate on high school teachers’ job satisfaction in a conflict-affected country

    School climate plays a vital role in a teacher’s job performance, satisfaction, and school effectiveness. There were abundant studies on school climate and effectiveness and its relationship with teachers’ job performance and job satisfaction for primary and secondary schools in developed and developing countries. Unfortunately, there were scarce studies on teachers’ satisfaction in underdeveloped countries with prolonged conflicts and government instability. This study investigated the influence of school climate on teachers’ job satisfaction in a conflict-affected country, Afghanistan. It employed a survey questionnaire to collect data from public high school teachers in the Takhar province of Afghanistan. The data were descriptively and inferentially analyzed with the aid of statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS). Despite prolonged conflicts and government instability, the study found a statistically positive correlation between school climate and high school teachers’ job satisfaction. It also revealed statistically significant differences in the satisfaction level of teachers by their demographic variables, i.e., gender, educational qualification, age, and working experience. The study suggests that education administrators, school leaders, and other stakeholders develop a policy advancing a peaceful and conducive learning environment to improve student’s learning outcomes, teachers’ job performance and satisfaction, and school effectiveness. Future studies may qualitatively examine schools in different parts of the country
