Early childhood social-emotional development: an impact on a developing country
Early childhood social-emotional development profoundly shapes a child's well-being and future success. This study explains how legislative and regulatory strategies and policies regarding early childhood social-emotional development impact a developing country, specifically focusing on Thailand. Using a qualitative approach, in-depth interviews with 12 key informants in Thailand were conducted via purposive sampling. Data analysis involved documentary and content analyses. The study unveiled critical policies and strategies to support early childhood social-emotional development. These encompass early childhood education and care programs, enhanced professional development and support for educators, increased family engagement, accessible mental health support, and robust assessment and monitoring systems. Social-emotional development carries substantial economic implications, affecting education, workforce productivity, healthcare, crime rates, and overall societal well-being. Effective early childhood social-emotional development policies and strategies can boost children's well-being and future success. Therefore, investing in early childhood education and care programs, improving professional development for educators, fostering family involvement, offering mental health support, and implementing vigilant assessment and monitoring systems can empower young children to thrive in the short and long term
Validation of a teacher mathematics knowledge scale based on the Ernest framework among Malaysian teachers
The aim of the current research was to validate the Malaysian version of the mathematical knowledge scale based on the Ernest framework. The participants include 100 teachers from Kelantan, Malaysia. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with principal components analysis and varimax rotation was conducted. This research determines the number of factors through eigenvalues greater than one and frames the structure of the scale through factor loading. The value of the eigenvalue and factor loading are considered in this research to frame and develop the structure of the scale. Furthermore, the reliability of the scale was tested with Cronbach’s alpha. The results showed six factors on the scale explaining 67.39% of the variances. A total of 26 items with factor loading greater than 0.60 were determined for the scale. The structure of the scale was as three items in the first factor, two items in the second factor, five items in the third factor, four items in the fourth factor, 10 items in the fifth factor, and two items in the sixth factor. Furthermore, the reliability of the scale was 0.958. This research concluded that the scale was internally consistent in measuring the teacher’s mathematics knowledge
Improving trigonometric competency with GeoGebra: a quasi-experimental study in a high school
This quasi-experimental study examines the efficacy of GeoGebra in enhancing trigonometric competence among tenth-grade students in Montería, Colombia. Comparing an experimental group that used GeoGebra with a control group receiving traditional teaching, key competencies such as reasoning and argumentation, communication, representation and modeling, and problem posing and solving were evaluated. Pre-intervention results showed that 88.19% of students in the experimental group had insufficient performance in reasoning and argumentation. After the implementation of GeoGebra, this figure decreased to 5.5%. In competencies of communication, representation, and modeling, the insufficient performance reduced from 85.7% to 5.5%, and in problem posing and solving, from 80.3% to 5.7%. These significant improvements demonstrate the positive impact of GeoGebra on the development of mathematical competencies. The study concludes that GeoGebra is an effective tool for strengthening trigonometric competence in high school students, highlighting the importance of integrating digital technologies in mathematics education. The findings suggest the need for more research on the use of technological tools in mathematics education and support investment in technological resources and teacher training
Towards global citizenship–role of cross border higher education across the ASEAN region
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region has been experiencing a vibrant economy with heavy investment in higher education as an economic development driver. Being home to over 630 million people and more than 7,000 higher education institutions (HEIs) and over 12 million students, it was critical to evaluate the role of cross-border higher education in the region. This study aimed to investigate the factors and motivations contributing to the success and efficacy of cross-border higher education in the ASEAN region. Additionally, it sought to examine the impact of cross-border education on the development of global citizenship. A quantitative study was conducted using secondary data from the repositories of the World Bank and UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS). Data was analyzed using descriptive visualizations and regression analysis. Results indicated variations in HEIs investments, with Brunei having the least. Many students moved from the ASEAN region to seek higher education in other regions, with Vietnam having the highest number of 137,022 students. The majority of these ASEAN countries have more than 10,000 higher education students' abroad. The United States, Australia, and Japan were the significant destinies of students from the ASEAN region. Government expenditure on tertiary education, gross domestic product (GDP), tertiary school enrolment, and GDP growth rate were found to have a significant influence on cross-border higher education mobility. Policy recommendations were the development of international collaborations, cross-border partnerships, and cross-national harmonization to enhance the partnership and mobility of higher education students in the ASEAN region
Factors influencing employee retention of academic home tutors in a private school
This study’s goal is to investigate the links between pay and benefits, worklife balance, professional development, and employee retention among academic home tutors in a Malaysian private school. Data from 80 respondents from this private school were gathered using a quantitative survey method. Statistical package for social science (SPSS) was employed throughout the study to analyze the data. The study results showed that salary & compensation and career enhancement positively correlate with employee retention. Meanwhile, work-life balance was not statistically linked with employee retention. The management should revise the human resource management practices by including these elements. The management should design salary & compensation packages that fit with individual knowledge, capabilities, and performance. The management may also consider offering flexible work schedules, such as training, mentoring, job mobility, and a reduction in working hours, as well as wellness assistance, such as counselling services and health and wellness initiatives. This will give employees the chance to advance their careers
Development of a multilingual online course with the language support for teaching physics in English
Distance education offers an alternative to traditional teaching methods, particularly online courses. During the pandemic, the role of information and communication technologies in the field of education has increased and is used to organize both synchronous and asynchronous learning. However, not all information and communication technology (ICT) tools and platforms provide the necessary functionality for developing online courses in the direction of language integration. This article discusses the issues of creating a multilingual online course of physics in English with the necessary language support and additional functions for the development of students’ academic language. The study used such methods as a survey, focus groups, analytical and descriptive methods, and empirical research. The key features of the developed course are the use of various types of content and methods for assessing both subject and language knowledge and skills. The presented survey results, data on summative assessment (SE), and trial testing show the effectiveness of the developed course modules. The conclusions and results described in the article will be useful to teachers of natural sciences in general education and private schools, especially those using international programs, deputy directors, as well as teachers who teach their subjects in a second or third language
Differentiated instruction based on multiple intelligences as promising joyful and meaningful learning
Boredom has previously been linked to negative academic outcomes such as academic motivation, strategies, and achievement. The understanding of multiple intelligence approaches creates opportunities for all learners to develop their potential to optimize learning through differentiated instructions. This research aims: i) to design and to develop differentiated instruction based on learners’ multiple intelligences for elementary schools; and ii) to measure the effectivity of students’ learning attitude and mastery of concepts. Using design and development research (DDR) anchored on analysis, development, design, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model and quasi-experimental research, the differentiated instruction based on multiple intelligence was conducted in a private Islamic Elementary School in collaboration with 3 class teachers. Based on the results of observations conducted at the school, the findings revealed that the learners can maximize their logical-mathematical, language, kinesthetic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal intelligences through a differentiated instruction based on multiple intelligence approach. Students experienced a joyful and meaningful learning atmosphere; hence it was expected that their intelligences can be developed naturally. In addition. this instruction was found to be effective to enhance science concept mastery especially in the aspects of remembering, understanding, and applying. The differentiated instruction based on multiple intelligences should be developed further to examine the effectiveness of the model in thematic learning for students both with low and high achievement
Analysis of the Indonesian version of the statistical anxiety scale instrument with a psychometric approach
This study aims to validate the psychometric approach (using the Rasch model and confirmatory factor analysis) on the Indonesian version of the statistical anxiety scale (SAS) instrument. Sampling in this study used cluster random sampling with a total sample of 1651 which was divided into three regions of Indonesia (Western Indonesia, Central Indonesia, and Eastern Indonesia) with details of 457 males (27.46%) and 1,194 females (72.54%). The number of samples from the West Indonesia region was 922 people (55.71%), the Central Indonesia region was 605 people (36.76%), and the Eastern Indonesia region was 124 people (7.53%). The results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) show that the dimensions/elements of the SAS instrument meet the criteria which are then continued using the rating scale model (RSM) approach. From the results of the tests performed, it shows that all items on the SAS instrument meet the specified criteria. Thus, the SAS instrument adopted in the Indonesian context can be used to measure students’ statistical anxiety. The results of the research conducted became the initial capital to increase students’ statistical anxiety considering that statistics courses are needed in completing studies, especially quantitative research
Adopting photovoice to explore teachers’ experiences in online teaching
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has caused a rapid and massive change in the education sector across the world and left no choice to teachers to maintain their status quo. As a country with very diverse geographical and technological conditions, Indonesia has felt the severe impact of this pandemic. This study explores how Indonesian English as foreign language (EFL) teachers struggle to adapt to the online teaching process, identifies the challenges they encountered during the online teaching and learning process, and investigates their strategies in coping with the associated challenges to ensure the learning objectives were achieved. This study employed photovoice as a visual research methodology to capture the new phenomena and answer the research objectives by inviting four English teachers from three different islands, Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi to share their experiences and strategies for survival. The results indicated that Indonesian EFL teachers suffered from challenging experiences, including the trial and error of learning management system (LMS) choice, and were confronted with unpleasant feedback from the students. This study also identified poor internet connection and low online student participation as the main issues. To deal with such problems, especially with low student participation, they viewed disadvantaged situations as a trigger to improve their creativity
Reflective thinking in school: a systematic review
Everything around us changes rapidly and to adapt to these constantly changing conditions and to understand the meaning of our life in the society in which we live, we must reflectively and consciously think about our actions in each given scenario. A school is a miniature form of society where learners are exposed to situations where they need to find solutions for every problem faced. No faultless solution and conclusions can be arrived at without a carefully employed reflective thinking process. In this context, the present study reviewed 19 intervention studies on reflective thinking in schools published between 2010 and 2021 and presents a brief summary. Various theories on reflective thinking, approach of educationists on reflective thinking of students and the relation between reflective thinking and students’ academic performance, are extensively analyzed. The findings of the study reveal that there are a few generally accepted theories of reflective thinking; reflection is a useful learning strategy and reflective thinking is an essential characteristic of academic excellence. This study recommends future research with a wider scope to accommodate more theoretical perspectives and wide-ranging databases
