Personality traits and job performance among academic staff in a private academic institution
This study investigates the association between the personality traits of academic staff members and their job performance in a Malaysian private educational institution. The personality traits were based on the Big Five model, which has five dimensions: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. About 110 participants from this institution were surveyed using a quantitative questionnaire, and their data were gathered. Throughout the study, the data were examined utilizing multiple regression analysis and factor analysis. According to the study’s findings, conscientiousness, and openness to experience significantly positively affect job performance. However, it was determined that extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism were not statistically significant and had no connection to job performance. As a result, in this institution, openness to experience is the most essential predictor of job performance. The findings of this study showed the management that openness to experience and conscientiousness are crucial for improving job performance inside the institution. Therefore, the management should pay more attention to these areas and recruit new employees with openness to experience and conscientious personality traits
The effectiveness of automated writing evaluation: a structural analysis approach
Modern advancement in learning technologies and tools has presented innovative written corrective feedback (WCF) methods based on artificial intelligence (AI) and existing corpora. Research has shown that these tools are perceived as exciting and useful by students, yet studies on their effectiveness and impact on students’ writing are relatively insufficient. To this end, the present study investigated the effectiveness of Grammarly writing assistant as perceived by 98 undergraduates who used the tool for a 14-week semester. The study adopted a questionnaire based on a modified technology acceptance model (TAM). The gathered data was analyzed using SmartPLS 3 software. The results revealed that different factors predict students’ perceptions about Grammarly and their intention to use it. Some of these factors were not presupposed. The findings imply using Grammarly as an extra learning tool rather than a basic one. It is suggested that future research on the efficacy of Grammarly should adopt longitudinal and experimental approaches
Honey and Mumford learning style: creative thinking process in solving statistical problems
This research revealed the nature of students’ creative thinking processes with theoretical and pragmatic learning styles in solving problems. The creative thinking process of these students goes through the stages of synthesizing ideas, building ideas, planning the implementation of ideas, and implementing ideas. This research was conducted at one of the junior high schools in Pasuruan Regency, Indonesia. Prospective research subjects are second grade students, totaling 150 students. The research instrument is the researcher as the main instrument and is assisted by additional instruments, namely the learning styles questionnaire (LSQ), the creative thinking test presented in E-module using science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) project-based learning, and interview guidelines. Based on the results of research on creative thinking processes in solving problems in students with theoretical learning styles and students with pragmatic learning styles, it can be concluded that there are differences in the creative thinking process at each stage, namely the stages of synthesizing ideas, building ideas, planning implementation of ideas, and implementing ideas. This difference is caused by differences in character between students with theoretical learning styles and pragmatic learning styles that influence students in building ideas to implement ideas
Indonesian English language teachers’ conceptions of critical thinking: challenge and strategy
Critical thinking (CT) has already been acknowledged as a significant skill in education, including in the field of English language learning. However, very few studies have investigated the challenges and strategies in enhancing students’ CT skills in English language subjects. This qualitative research aims to investigate the Indonesian English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ conception of the necessity of implementing CT in EFL subject. This research is also intended to find out the challenges and strategies in encouraging students to use CT in their learning process. This research employed two research tools for data collection: questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The study revealed that EFL teachers believe in the value of promoting CT in their teaching classroom activities. However, CT has been practically rarely unnoticed in the implementation of English language classes due to the EFL teachers’ concentration on linguistic skills, grammar instruction, and English communicative skills. The findings also found some challenges faced by the EFL teachers in implementing CT, as well as some strategies in promoting the skill. This research recommends the importance of involving Indonesian EFL teachers in a training on CT to enhance their understanding and allow them to stimulate CT among their students
Distributive leadership as predictor of 21st century teaching practices
The concept of distributive leadership is a vital component of 21st century teaching practices. This study aimed to identify the dimensions that influence the development and implementation of science and mathematics teaching in dual language program schools. It was conducted with the help of over 336 teachers from 93 dual language program (DLP) schools in Malaysia. The distributive leadership readiness scale and 21st century skill (4C) questionnaire was used to collect data and analyze the effects of various dimensions on the development and implementation of science and mathematics teaching in dual language program schools. The results of the study revealed that the P3 model was associated with 14.9% (=.149) increase in the variance of 21st century teaching practices. The results of the analysis revealed that the changes in the three leadership style components included in the regenerating model were significant. The shared responsibility, leadership style and the combination of these dimensions contributed to the 12.9% (=.129) increase in variance. The research also found a positive relationship between 21st century teaching practices and the distributive leadership concept. The findings support the notion that distributive leadership can be a weak factor influencing the development and implementation of 21st century teaching practices
Designing learning activities to develop self-directed learning competency in teaching informatics
Currently, there are not many studies on teaching informatics in the direction of developing students’ self-directed learning (SDL) competency. The results of the survey with 235 informatics teachers in 42 provinces/cities across Vietnam showed that although they are very interested in teaching SDL, teachers are still confused about teaching methods and assessments. To improve the effectiveness of informatics teaching as well as develop SDL for students, the study proposed a method of teaching informatics in the direction of designing activities to guide students to create digital products by themselves. The pedagogical experiment on assessing SDL and learning outcomes was conducted on two experimental and control groups, selected from 87 10th grade students, in the first semester of the school year 2022-2023 at Cam Giang High school in Hai Duong, Vietnam. The results of SDL and test scores of the experimental class were higher than that of the control class (with p-value <0.005– this difference is statistically significant). This proves that the method (creating of digital products) is effective, positively affecting students’ learning, helping students develop SDL competency
The evaluation of problem-solving oriented e-module in learning computer-based subject
It is tough and challenging to learn several computer-based subjects via an online learning setting during COVID-19 for students from the education field. It required a lot of skills, techniques, understanding among students, and the ability to think critically to solve problems. To date, a lack of studies provides digital content as learning approaches to computer-based subject students for their learning via online learning. Thus, the problem-solving oriented e-module in learning computer-based subject via Facebook for Higher Education was proposed. An exploratory sequential research design (qualitative and then quantitative approach) has been used in this study. Research samples were selected based on purposive sampling (10 students) to find out what they needed from the e-module. Then, the module was developed based on ADDIE Model and problem-solving learning strategy. There were nine experts validated the e-module in terms of the ADDIE model approach, problem-solving approach, and content. This module was tested on 34 undergraduate students towards students’ performance and social presence for quantitative part. The t-test showed that the e-module significantly improved student performance (p 0.00; t=5.52) with Cohen’s d=0.944. Interestingly, the results from the content analysis show that this module fosters social presence via Facebook learning groups such as interactive, affective, and cohesive
Development of Android-based virtual laboratory media at vocational school: effects on students’ cognitive skills
Vocational school students are not only required to master competency skills but also cognitive skills. Engineering mechanics learning is a basic calculation lesson that students should master. This research aimed to develop and identify the effectiveness of Android-based virtual laboratory (V-lab) media to improve students’ cognitive skills in learning engineering mechanics at vocational school in Surakarta. The subjects comprised 70 students of first grade vocational school majoring in civil engineering in Surakarta. This research was a research and development (R&D) study to develop an Android-based virtual laboratory media. Testing the N-Gain analysis in the experimental and control classes was to determine the effectiveness of virtual laboratory media in improving students’ cognitive thinking skills. Data were obtained from questionnaires and pretest and post-test test sheets. The developed virtual laboratory media was considered ‘very appropriate’ by media, material, and practitioner experts. The average value of N-Gain for the experimental class was 78.19% which was included in the effective category. Meanwhile, in the control class, the average N-Gain value reached 54.07%, which was included in the less effective category. This indicates that the use of Android-based virtual laboratory media for learning is more effective than conventional learning media
Context input process product evaluation of hybrid learning practices in Indonesian universities
The transformation of post-pandemic learning at Indonesian universities is becoming increasingly diverse. Several universities use hybrid learning models to implement hybrid learning practices. The purpose of this study is to assess the hybrid learning process at two Indonesian universities. The context input process product (CIPP) evaluation model is used in this study as part of a mixed method. Quantitative methods are used to get an overview of student and lecturer responses, whereas qualitative methods are used to dig deeper into data about hybrid learning practices. This study included 341 students and 22 lecturers from both universities. Techniques for collecting data include questionnaires, interviews, observation, and documentation studies. The data was analyzed using learning theories. The study’s findings indicate that hybrid learning practices are performing well. The readiness of university infrastructure, as well as the readiness of students and lecturers, determines the success of hybrid learning implementation. In practice, however, some lecturers tend to use face-to-face or online learning practices exclusively to fill gaps in the hybrid learning process. This study suggests that universities investigate an effective model for implementing hybrid learning
Schema theory’s immediate impact on college students’ Chinese reading comprehension
Studies show that there is an increase of college students who prefer reading short summaries rather than long complex texts containing knowledge or theory. Thus, this study focuses on improving first-year students’ reading comprehension in Chinese courses by observing the effectiveness of teaching reading lessons in Chinese courses with the curriculum designed based on “schema theory”. The selected reading materials are extensive texts with certain knowledge or theories. For evaluation purposes, the reading test questions uses the same measure of reading proficiency levels of program for international student assessment (PISA) to assess learners’ reading comprehension, contextual reasoning, integration, and analysis abilities more accurately. By comparing the results and discrepancies of the pre- and post-assessment, the preliminary research found that the teaching practice and curriculum designed based on schema theory effectively improves learners' reading scores and instill habits to increase their tendency to reach a deeper understanding of the reading material. This finding demonstrates the effectiveness of applying schema theory to reading lessons; resulting in potential of immediate and enhanced levels of comprehension
