Course design aspects of blended learning in undergraduate education
Blended learning is a popular teaching mode in today’s higher education system. Course design for blended education presents a challenge for educational specialists. This research aims to identify the essential aspects of course design in undergraduate blended learning. Course content, course structure and delivery, collaborative engagement, learner facilitation, and assessment and evaluation were discovered as aspects of blended learning course design. Based on the identified aspects, a survey questionnaire was designed and pilot tested to check the reliability and validity of the measurement tool. The analysis revealed that the questionnaire was acceptable in terms of psychometric characteristics after removing four items. Therefore, 23 items remained in the final questionnaire, which was considered reliable and valid for the context. The information was gathered using an online questionnaire from academic staff at Sri Lankan state universities attached to the departments conducting degree programs in the computing discipline. There were 97 participants included in the final dataset. The results were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results revealed that ‘assessment and evaluation’ was highly considered when designing undergraduate blended learning courses, while other aspects which are also imperative, have been paid less attention by the university academicians
Developing learning and training within industry model to improve work readiness of vocational high school students
Unemployment is still a national priority that needs to be addressed. In 2022, vocational high schools in Indonesia had the highest open unemployment rate. The highest open unemployment rate is a result of vocational high school students’ insufficient work readiness. Therefore, this research aims to develop a learning and training within industry (LTWI) model, and to evaluate the model’s efficacy in increasing vocational high school students’ work readiness. The research employed a research and development (R&D) design by Richey and Klein with the phases of needs analysis, internal validation, and external validation. There were 12 teachers and 89 students from the automotive engineering department at Muhammadiyah 1 Pakem Vocational High School and 1 Puring Vocational High School, as well as six instructors from the automotive industry: GAS Auto Service, Automotive Jogjakarta Center (OJC), Bengkel Barokah, and RND Auto Service, participated in the research. Data collection strategies adopted were interviews, questionnaires, and performance tests. The data were descriptively evaluated, and the conclusions were drawn using a categorization formula. With an average score of 3.43, the LTWI model can be used to learn very well. With an average final score of 3.32, the efficacy of the LTWI learning model falls into the category of “very good”. The LTWI model can be applied effectively to learning in vocational high schools since it has a positive influence on students’ work readiness
Validity and reliability of the discrepancy evaluation instrument for measuring inequality in the online learning
This study aimed to demonstrate a valid and reliable discrepancy evaluation instrument. It was for measuring inequality in the online learning process for mathematics education research subjects. The approach to this research was instrument development, which focuses on several stages, including defining variables, describing variables into more detailed indicators, compiling instrument items, conducting instrument trials, and analyzing the results of instrument trials. The subjects involved in the content validity test were two experts, while the reliability test was 40 students. The result analysis of the content validity test used the Gregory formula. The result analysis of the reliability test results used the Cronbach alpha formula. It indicated that the results of the instrument content validity were very good, and the reliability test results were in the moderate category. The resulting impact of this study on educational evaluation development was new knowledge, especially for evaluators of mathematics education, about the importance of content validity and reliability of the discrepancy evaluation instrument used to measure inequality in the online learning process in mathematics education research subjects
Indigenous knowledge of Malay culture and Islamic professional madrasa teachers: a phenomenological investigation
Same research has been done on professional madrasa teachers, but incorporating Islamic values and indigenous knowledge of Malay culture into them has been neglected. This study aims to determine Islamic professional madrasa teachers based on indigenous knowledge of Malay culture in the teaching for future profession. This study used a phenomenological research design involving 16 madrasa teachers as informants. Data was collected by conducting interviews with madrasa teachers and analyzed using a systematic design. This research shows that Islamic professional madrasa teachers are related to prophetic abilities based on Islamic values, moral, and related to human functions as khalifah, imarat al-ard, and ‘abdullah. Indigenous knowledge of Malay culture is an integral part of developing Islamic professional madrasa teachers, contribute to producing attitudes there are in accordance with Islam and having commendable qualities. Madrasa teachers have the ability the rules of Fiqh: al-‘adatu muhakkamat, istihsan, ‘urf, and maslahah al-mursalah to integrate Malay cultural values in learning materials. Self-control, ukhuwah, religious moderation, and an attitude of pluralism contained in Malay culture are the basis for the personality competence of Islamic professional madrasa teachers in learning. This research has implications for developing theories of professional Islamic madrasa teachers for the future profession
Action competence for sustainability instrument base on spirituality for prospective science teacher
Science teachers are the main actors in developing students’ action competence for sustainability (ACS) in the future. Considering that the majority of teachers and prospective science teachers have a spiritual foundation, the spiritual aspect should be an integral part of the ACS. Therefore, an instrument is needed that can measure the level of ACS that includes aspects of spirituality in it. This study was designed to develop and validate an instrument for prospective science teacher in in the form of action competence for sustainability instrument base on spirituality (ACSIS). The instrument was developed based on previous research findings and focus group discussions involving eleven experts. The factors and internal consistency were examined by involving 634 prospective science teachers in Indonesia. Validity and reliability were tested using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). This study’s results showed 21 questionnaire items (four dimensions) with acceptable internal validity and consistency. Analysis of academic desertion among ungraduated mathematics students
University dropout is a phenomenon that has played an important role in the undergraduate program in mathematics at the University of Tolima (Colombia), because it has been a program that has high dropout rates semester by semester. To generate the results presented here, the population who was considered was students enrolled in the 2012A-2018B academic period. In this time frame, the information on the factors required to characterize student dynamics is consolidated and evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier statistical model, evaluation of associations, correlations and comparisons using non-parametric statistics. The aim is to determine the individual, academic, institutional, social and economic factors that cause students to drop out. As a result of the analysis in context, the factors that influence the problems of the phenomenon of dropout in this cohort were determined and characterized. This methodology presents causal factors for student retention on which actions should be taken to propose strategies associated with obtaining better percentages of retention and graduation within the Bachelor’s Degree program in Mathematics
Lifelong learning practices of primary school teachers: a systematic literature review
The practice of lifelong learning among teachers involves continuous efforts to enhance their knowledge, skills, and competencies through various activities. Previous studies have explored different practices such as reading, collaboration, participation in courses, culturalizing learning, conducting research, and digital learning. However, there is a lack of systematic reviews of these practices. This an article aims to fill this gap by conducting a systematic review of lifelong learning practices among primary school teachers for 5 years since 2019 until 2023. The study integrates various research designs and follows the ROSES publication standard. Articles were selected from databases including Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), and ERIC. Thematic analysis revealed four key concepts: self-learning, continuous training, knowledge integration, and digital networks. Future research can focus on examining the resilience of teachers from diverse backgrounds in adapting to changes in the education system. This study serves as a valuable reference for teachers to assess their own lifelong learning practices and facilitate transformative growth towards becoming knowledgeable educator
Quantitative insights into outcome-based education: a bibliometric exploration
Outcome-based education (OBE) is a method of educational approach that focuses on defining specific learning outcomes or objectives that students should achieve by the end of a course, program, or educational experience Instead of merely following a predetermined curriculum, OBE places focus on what learners should be able to accomplish or display as a result of their learning. A thorough bibliometric analysis utilizing biblioshiny and VOSviewer is used in this work to dive into the world of outcome-based education. This investigation attempts to offer quantitative insights into the development, trends, and significant contributors in the area of OBE by carefully examining a wide range of academic articles. The study encompasses a broad temporal range, capturing developments in the field from its inception in 1978 to 2023, thereby offering a comprehensive overview of its evolution over time. Patterns in research production, significant works, prolific authors, and collaboration networks appear via the prism of bibliometric approaches, illuminating the complex OBE landscape. This study not only contributes to the understanding of OBE’s scholarly landscape but also underscores the significance of bibliometric approaches in illuminating trends and shaping future research directions
Skills of future workforce: skills gap based on perspectives from academicians and industry players
Apart from having specific knowledge, graduates are expected to possess a set of soft and hard skills to be employed. This study aims to identify soft and hard skills relevant to the future workforce in the electrical and electronic (E&E) industry based on two perspectives; academicians from public higher education institution (HEI) and E&E industry players. Further, the study aims to investigate skills gaps between two stakeholders. A total of 50 academicians and 31 industry players in Malaysia were surveyed using a structured questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using an independent t-test. In terms of soft skills, analytical thinking skills, communication skills, and discipline were more perceived by academicians, whereas decision-making skills, teamwork skills, and discipline were more favored by industry players. For hard skills, both players favored technology use, except for organizational capabilities which were perceived more by academicians while troubleshooting was favored more by industry players. This study contributes to the collaboration between public HEI and the E&E industry to address the skills gaps, which will benefit all stakeholders. Embedding higher order thinking skills in Islamic history (Sirah) education in Malaysia
The promotion of integrating higher order thinking skills (HOTS) in the Malaysian education system is pivotal to producing analytical thinkers to keep up with the rapid globalization of this era. Thus, the implementation of HOTS in learning and facilitation (PdPc) has been emphasized. However, little is known about the integration of HOTS in Islamic history and civilization (Sirah) lessons. Furthermore, teachers continue to use traditional methods and disregard incorporating HOTS in PdPc. Therefore, the current study conducted an in-depth investigation into the components of Sirah lessons to support the implementation of the Malaysian education development plan (PPPM) 2013-2015 by strengthening teaching techniques through the use of HOTS for a better understanding of Sirah lessons. Using an explanatory sequential mixed method design, the findings reveal that the teaching components of Sirah lessons with the integration of HOTS are at a moderate level in the conclusion stage of a lesson. Therefore, the current study proposes a model that integrates HOTS, i.e., the element of attitude, preparation and planning, teaching aids with relevant aspects of PAK21, knowledge of HOTS, mastery of the subject content, teaching techniques and approach, assessment, and evaluation
