    Get PDF
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the Asian educational sector, prompting countries to shift educational delivery to distance learning. With this, the researchers determined the impact of distance learning during the pandemic on students’ academic performance. Utilizing a mixed-methods design employing data mining and focus group discussions, pertinent student data (n=1,305) and qualitative responses (students, n=10; teachers, n=5) from a teacher education college in a state university in Central Visayas, Philippines, were obtained and analyzed through descriptive, correlational, and thematic analyses. The students had very good academic performances in general education, professional education, and specialization courses, and most of them had online capabilities, including gadgets and internet access. No significant relationships were observed between the student’s academic performance and their profiles and distance learning capacity. The distance learning experiences of students and teachers were themed as challenges in adoption, the reality of the digital divide, the journey of the self, the role of the community, and the learning process. In conclusion, students’ profiles and distance learning capacity are not determinants of academic performance, and their experiences reflect the sad reality of distance learning in the first stage of the pandemic

    Get PDF
Gotong royong is a significant character for Indonesian generation Z (Gen-Z), based on traditional values, to unite this multicultural nation. However, the rapid development of digital media has the potential to alter traditional values. Gen-Z has the ability to quickly adapt to this technology. However, there is a concern that the gotong royong character may decline with the rise of digital media. This research investigates the perception of Gen-Z towards the gotong royong character and explores the way to preserve this value. This is qualitative descriptive research, whose population is made up of 108 students from six excellent schools in three Indonesian cities with different religious backgrounds and educational systems. The results show that Gen-Z still considers the gotong royong value is important. However, they also acknowledge that it can be threatened by the advancement of digital technology. With this awareness, Gen-Z can explore ways to adopt digital technology to preserve this character value, such as utilizing digital learning in club study and digital fundraising. This research recommends optimizing the school institution to take a more active role in fostering character through online character-building learning

    Get PDF
Private universities in Jordan have witnessed a major shift in teaching methods and strategies, as e-learning techniques have become an integral part of the educational policies followed. Therefore, the study aimed to identify the effect of social studies teachers’ use of e-learning techniques in developing the perceived self-competencies of university students, depending on gender and field of specialization. To achieve this, the descriptive analytical method was used in conducting the study. The perceived self-efficacy test was applied to a sample of 292 university students who were randomly selected. The study found that e-learning techniques contributed to raising the level of perceived self-efficacy among males more than among females. It did not have a significant impact on its interaction with the student’s field of specialization. The results also indicate the importance of the role played by social studies teachers with technological educational techniques in improving the level of students’ self-efficacy. Moreover, social relations are among the most important factors contributing to building a conscious generation that preserves human dignity. Therefore, we must research the negatives of e learning to find out the reason behind the lack of improvement in the level of perceived self-efficacy among females

Closing the digital divide in education: an innovative review of demand and supply side policies in four ASEAN member states

    Get PDF
The rapid adoption of digital technologies in education highlights the importance of closing the digital divide in education. However, research on school connectivity policy regimes to bridge the digital divide in education in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region is lacking. The authors conducted a systematic review of policies in Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines following a framework synthesis approach. Through desk research, data was identified based on a supply and demand side framework and included policy documents from relevant ministries and departments, reports by international development organizations and non-governmental organizations, and academic literature. The analysis reveals an imbalance between supply and demand-side policies and regulatory approaches with governments in the analyzed countries favoring demand side policies

In today’s rapidly evolving world, the acquisition of social competencies and an understanding of sustainability principles are critical for holistic student development. This study delves into the comprehensive analysis of social and sustainable skills within the framework of secondary education, considering the influential factors of gender and spatial contexts. To investigate whether there exists a difference between the students at the secondary level of education in social and sustainable skills along the demographic lines of gender and spatial context. A primary data collection method was used for gathering quantitative data from 125 students on a Likert-type 25-item self-constructed questionnaire and differential analysis was conducted. The performance of male and female students is significantly different and the performance of students in the urban settings is higher than the students in the rural settings. It shows that female and rural students are comparatively lower in performing on the social and sustainable skills test. The findings of this research hold implications for educators, policymakers, and practitioners committed to fostering well-rounded individuals prepared for the challenges of the 21st century. By identifying gender-specific patterns and spatial influences, stakeholders can tailor educational strategies and interventions to ensure equitable skill cultivation

Meeting students’ needs: teachers’ practice of multiple intelligences in English as second language classrooms

    Get PDF
The multiple intelligence (MI) theory suggests that students learn in different ways based on their intelligence strengths, thus, proposes teachers employ a variety of intelligences to engage students in the teaching and learning process. This study explores the application of MI in the Malaysian English as second language (ESL) classrooms and the extent to which teachers provide instructions that meet the needs of the students in the classroom. Data were procured from a survey questionnaire that gauged teachers’ teaching activities in ESL classrooms under Gardner’s eight constructs of MI: linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, bodily-kinesthetic, naturalist, and musical. Descriptive statistics using mean score and independent sample t-test was employed in the data analysis procedures. The findings reveal that only 58% of the teachers had knowledge of the MI theory, with only 12% having received formal pedagogical training on MI. In addition, the eight intelligences were not practiced equally. Interpersonal, linguistic, intrapersonal, and spatial intelligences seemed to be the most common strategies employed by teachers in their teaching as these MI are usually measured in the standardized tests while naturalistic and musical intelligences were the least frequently integrated as they are not included in the assessment scale in ESL. Such findings have significant pedagogical implications as classroom teachers should acknowledge the different levels of strengths and motivations in learning among the students. The study highlights the need to provide teachers with training and integrating personalized learning, utilizing students’ strong aspects, and employing a variety of teaching methods in the classroom

    Get PDF
This paper presents an evaluation of an English for specific purposes (ESP) curriculum using the social semiotic perspective. This perspective highlights the importance of authenticity, multimodality, and communicative competence in ESP teaching and learning. Five main components of the ESP curriculum at the Port and Shipping Management Department of a Maritime Polytechnic in Indonesia were evaluated, including the syllabus, lesson plans, resources, teaching activities, and assessment. In conducting the evaluation, the authors developed an evaluation framework based on three existing frameworks, namely Stufflebeam’s context input process product (CIPP) model for evaluation, Kaewpet’s ESP program evaluation, and Tsou and Chen’s ESP program evaluation. Multiple data collection methods were used and multiple perspectives of research participants were invited. The findings of the study revealed that there were several problems in the ESP curriculum of the Port and Shipping Management Department. The main problem was the poorly designed syllabus that has caused drawbacks on the other components, such as irrelevant and unauthentic teaching materials and activities, low variety of teaching media, lack of multimodal resources used in the classroom, and low validity and reliability of assessments. Pedagogical implications regarding the results of the evaluation are also discussed.

Development and validation of the educational psychological capital scale

    Get PDF
Since the introduction of psychological capital to the field of education, it has drawn a lot of interest from researchers. This is due to the numerous studies that have demonstrated the positive effects of psychological capital on academic performance. Nevertheless, the psychological capital scale was initially developed to measure the psychological capital of employees, not students. There is a dearth of studies that examine the psychological capital scale’s psychometric properties in educational contexts, particularly in Southeast Asia. Therefore, the present study aims to develop and test the validity of an educational psychological capital scale. The study was carried out with the participation of a total of 2,494 undergraduates. The tests of indicator reliability, construct reliability convergent, validity, and discriminant validity were executed. The result revealed that the scale demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties. The study also found psychological capital can serve as a positive predictor of student academic performance. It signified that the scale can be used to measure student psychological capital precisely. This has resolved the flaw of the original psychological capital scale, which measured students’ psychological capital in the workplace rather than in educational settings. However, since the study was conducted in Malaysia, the psychometric properties of the scale can be further verified in other countries
