    Exploratory factor analysis-instrument for self-assessment of computation thinking skills and collaboration skills

    This study focuses on developing and validating instruments to assess the computational thinking skills (CTS) and collaboration skills (CS) of undergraduate students in Indonesia. Employing a quantitative research approach with the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) technique, the research process unfolded in three validation steps. First, face validity was established through expert judgment. Second, discriminant validity was examined using product-moment correlations and Cronbach’s alpha. Finally, EFA were employed to assess the factorial structure. The instrument development process followed five phases: drafting the instrument, face validity assessment by experts, data collection involving 242 undergraduate students as samples, discriminant validity analysis (product moment and Cronbach’s alpha), and EFA analysis to group items and construct dimensions. This study identified six dimensions for CTS (algorithmic thinking, cooperative thinking, problem reformulation, creativity, critical thinking, and systematic testing) and three dimensions for CS (knowledge sharing, planning, and responsibility). These findings support validating the CTS and CS self-assessment scale, making it a valuable tool for evaluating undergraduate student learning and researching computational thinking and CS in Indonesia. Researchers and educators are encouraged to utilize the CTS and CS instrument for self-assessment purposes and further exploration of these competencies among undergraduate students

    Challenges to professional teacher development through workplace culture management

    The implementation of professional teacher development in Indonesia has been lacking. Many teachers continue to underperform, as evidenced by their workplace behaviors that violate the ethics of their profession. Workplace culture has contributed significantly to, and been detrimentally affected by, this lack of professionalism. Using a qualitative approach, this study seeks to explore the forms, factors, and implications of these challenges for the management of workplace culture. Teachers are simultaneously the objects and key informants of this research, which was conducted through observation of secondary-level madrasas spread throughout Bengkulu Province, Indonesia, as well as interviews with 15 teachers. This study identifies three main challenges: i) teachers have difficulty accessing professional training; ii) teachers cannot readily continue their educations; and iii) teachers have trouble writing and publishing academic works. These challenges are caused by a multitude of factors, primarily the lack of the funding, facilities, and infrastructure for professional development, as well as teachers limited digital literacy, and result in a workplace culture where initiative goes unrewarded, discipline is lacking, and teachers are unmotivated. As such, this study recommends significant improvements to the structure, culture, and infrastructure of educational institutions, thereby allowing teachers to overcome the challenges that hinder their professional development

    Factors propelling mathematics learning: insights from a quantitative empirical study

    Mathematics learning (ML) is a fundamental aspect of education that lays the groundwork for various academic disciplines and practical applications. Understanding the factors that propel ML is crucial for optimizing educational outcomes. This quantitative empirical study investigates the impact of logical reasoning (LR), critical thinking (CT), information technology (IT), and distance learning (DL) on ML. The study employs structural equation modeling (SEM) using SmartPLS 4 for data analysis and hypothesis testing. The findings reveal that LR, CT, IT, and DL positively influence ML. The results highlight the importance of fostering LR, CT, and the integration of IT in mathematics education. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the factors that promote effective ML. These findings have implications for educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers, aiding in the design of instructional strategies and the integration of technology to enhance ML outcomes

    Cultural intermediary in higher education based on ethical relation

    Preliminary studies on cultural intermediaries focused on social classes that mediate the production and consumption of culture. Therefore, this study determined the importance of the cultural intermediaries of migrant worker university students who popularize the values of higher education for the working class. Habitus and replication of meaning were used as analytical tools, with an alternative perspective proposed on cultural intermediaries using an ethical approach. The results showed that the cultural intermediary based on ethical relationships produces a new individual involvement of marginalized groups. Meanwhile, community relations with a similar social context are strengthened, enabling individuals to combine their allegiances and continuously generate values to suit certain social situations

    Analyzing textbook requirements to create physics learning resources

    There are no textbooks for developing physics learning tools, the learning materials are not structured, and students independently collect lecture materials. This research aims to explore the need for teaching materials, especially physics learning device development textbooks. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. This study used an incidental sample of physics education students from four university representatives who had completed an online questionnaire. The respondents were 166 people, consisting of 30 students from University A, 27 from University B, 29 from University C, and 80 from University D. The results showed that the research sample required physics learning device development textbooks. The yearly need for physics learning device development textbooks was 57.07% in 2018, 59.78% in 2019, and 60.88% in 2020. The percentage of the indicator of the need for textbooks: 47.20% for learning resources, 37.98% for textbook availability, 84.64% for teaching material students need, and 67.16% for students interest in physics learning device development. Therefore, lecturers need to develop practice-based textbooks in the physics learning device development course

    Research on mathematical beliefs: systematic literature review

    This study uses the systematic literature review (SLR) method to identify knowledge trends in beliefs about the nature of mathematics, learning mathematics and identify new development opportunities for further research. The Scopus database was used, and 41 documents were found as the primary source for further analysis. The results show that mathematical beliefs have become a current research trend. The number of publications increased significantly starting in 1989, accompanied by many citations. Based on these primary documents, it is known that the development of mathematical beliefs research topics. The foundation of this topic begins with studying the topic of knowledge, activities, and learning mathematics. Then it is developed into other, more varied studies, including teacher’s beliefs transition; mathematical beliefs comparison; mathematics teacher’s belief, teaching, and learning; mathematical beliefs and problem-solving; inquiry-based learning (IBL); affective factors; technology utilization; common misconceptions; and development of mathematics teacher’s beliefs instrument. This research investigates the core of scientific work to provide information to researchers and institutions as material for consideration of research to be carried out

    Rasch model assessment of algebraic word problem among year 8 Malaysian students

    Word problems continue to be a challenge for students today. All students must meet the prerequisites for problem solving and reasoning skills, which are important components of the critical thinking component of 21st century skills. This study is being conducted to assess students’ strategies for solving word problems with numbers, consecutives, and ages. The Rasch model is used to analyze the item difficulty level of word problems and students’ strategies for solving ten-word problems at various levels of item difficulty in a similar trait. Then, Pearson correlation analysis is used to investigate the item difficulty level in relation to linguistic, algebraic, and arithmetic factors of word problems before evaluating students’ performance on solving these word problems using various strategies. Rasch model found these algebraic word-problem questions are slightly harder for year 8 Malaysian students in relative to an international standard. Meanwhile, the item difficulty of word problems is driven by linguistic and algebra factors where students can score accurately if the word problems contained explicit information. However, the students encountered difficulties while losing their solution strategy when the questions contained implicit data that demanded critical thinking ability

    Sketching the investigative trends of research articles on the deployment of English for accounting: a scientometric study

    This study scientometrically mapped the investigative trends in English for accounting (EA) research articles. The corpus was 181 research articles in EA from 1981 to 2021. They were retrieved from metadata dimensions of various leading journals and analyzed with automated bibliometric analysis. The findings revealed that the investigative themes in EA remain burgeoning for 41 years. The accounting history journal indicated the greatest impact on EA research. The analyzed journals reported a large impact correlating to their development. The most productive author in the EA research was Jones. The typical words frequently emerging in the analyzed research articles were accounting, research, and English. The investigative and developing topics related to EA were relatively dynamic. This study suggests that the scientometric investigative perspective offers a systematic, diachronic, and quantitative outline of English for accounting research by considering its meta-disciplinary knowledge and evolving trends over the years

    Epistemological beliefs and teaching practice: a systematic literature review 2011 to 2021

    Teachers’ actions are grounded on their theoretical and disciplinary knowledge; however, their belief system, and in particular their epistemological beliefs, may be influencing their teaching practices. This study analyzes the scientific production between 2011 and 2021 regarding teachers’ epistemological beliefs and their relationship with teaching practice. The methodological design consists of a systematic literature review, following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines in the Web of Science, Scopus, and ERIC databases. The sample considers 18 articles reviewed by thematic content analysis. The results report that this type of belief has a close relationship with teaching approaches, that there are certain inconsistencies with teaching practice, and that links have been established with other areas of study that enrich reflection. It seems prudent and necessary to observe this relationship from a broad, situated, and complex perspective, avoiding generalizing and polarizing the character of these beliefs, by noting that there are various factors involved between what teachers believe about knowledge and what they do in the classroom

    Assessing numeracy skills on flat shapes and scaffolding forms in junior high school

    Based on The Regulation of The Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology No.17 of 2021, cognitive learning outcomes consist of literacy and numeracy as measured through a minimum competency assessment (MCA) with grade 5, 8, and 11. The subjects in this study are 42 students of grade VIII (second grade) from state Junior High School 4 Cirebon and State Junior High School 2 Cirebon, Indonesia. The instruments were tests of numeracy literacy skills, documentation, and interviews. Purposive sampling was used to determine the subject of analysis of test results and interviews. The data were analyzed descriptively through the following stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions drawing. The results showed that the research subjects are still not familiar with numeracy literacy questions which have the characteristics of always being preceded by texts, not understanding what is known and asked in the questions so they tend to blindly guess the answers and needed to be reminded of the prerequisite material. Based on the results of this study, teachers can develop learning media, project-based learning, scaffolding, and teaching materials that accommodate numeracy skills or differentiated learning
