Geographic-inquiry on virtual environment mobile application to support fieldwork based on blended learning
Implementing geography learning using the blended learning model is challenging for most geography teachers because this subject is ‘hands-on’ and needs to be learned directly in a real environment using fieldwork. This study aimed to test the pedagogical effectiveness of the geographic-inquiry on virtual environment (GIVE) application in supporting fieldwork based on blended learning to improve students’ geographical thinking. This study used a quasi-experimental method involving 216 high school students from three schools. The paired sample t-test (Sig. 2-tailed 0.000) shows that GIVE has a pedagogical influence on students’ geographical thinking. GIVE also offers a big effect size (Cohen’s d=1.37). The technology and the right smartphone application can help develop a virtual environment close to a real one, so fieldwork and hands-on learning activities can be carried out in blended learning; this helps to increase the quality of geography learning
Research trends in critical thinking skills in mathematics: a bibliometric study
This study systematically reviews and analyzes previous studies’ literature to identify the research gaps and the steps that must be taken for research on critical thinking in further mathematics education. Two methods, namely bibliometric analysis and descriptive content analysis, were used to achieve this goal. Data for the bibliometric analysis was obtained from the Scopus database, with the keywords “critical thinking” and “mathematics” Documents accessed are limited to the publication range of 2012-2022. The results show that the number of critical thinking research in mathematics has increased significantly, with a peak in 2021 of 65 articles; the United States has the most research and citations. The source that received the most citations was the journal Educational Studies in Mathematics. The evolution of the theme of critical thinking in mathematics began to link critical thinking with collaboration learning, mathematics education, teacher education, engineering, education, and collaborative learning. The quantitative approach with a student sample, tests as data collection instruments, and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method is the methodology most often used by researchers. The results of this study are likely helpful for other researchers who will examine critical thinking skills in mathematics, namely as a research guide that they will develop. In addition, the existence of several research gaps can motivate other researchers to fill these gaps to contribute to improving the quality of critical thinking in mathematics
Validation of the French version of the classroom assessment scoring system infant and toddler in Quebec
The objective of this study is to validate the French version of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) infant and toddler, as employed to assess the quality of interactions in groups of children under 3 years old, in childcare centers in Quebec where French is the official language. Indeed, when using a different language version of a standard-based tool outside its original context, an important step is to verify that it remains reliable and valid for measuring the research construct. This validation study was conducted in Montreal area (Quebec, Canada). The subjects were 154 classrooms (46 infant, 108 toddler) located within a representative sample of 68 childcare centers. Live classroom observations were conducted in the fall 2018 with the CLASS and other measures of process quality. Results replicate the factor structures of the original versions of the CLASS tool and provide evidence for the good reliability (inter-rater reliability, internal consistency) and validity (criterion and construct) of the French versions. The discussion highlights cross-cultural differences in the classrooms, childcare centers, and regulations that could explain some differences obtained in this research and, therefore, needs to be considered when using the CLASS in French to have a reliable and valid tool to measure the quality of interactions
Effects of career readiness module on career self-efficacy among university students
This study aimed to identify the effects of the Career Readiness Module on career self-efficacy and its subscales, namely self-appraisal, occupational information, goal selection, planning and problem solving among university students. The randomized pretest-posttest control group were used in this study. A total of 60 second year students from the School of Computing, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, were selected as research subjects using random cluster sampling. Both groups completed the Career Decision Self-Efficacy–Short Form (CDSE-SF) and the Big Five Inventory (BFI) questionnaires before and after the two-month intervention sessions. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science version 23.0. The repeated-measures ANOVA and effect size were used to test the hypotheses of study. The study results showed significant differences in the experimental group for career self-efficacy and each of its subscale between pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2 at the p≤.05 significant level. This study also demonstrated the significance of implementing the Career Readiness Module among university students prior to graduation in order to improve their career self-efficacy
Exploring elementary teacher education students’ perception on parental involvement
This study concerned with elementary teacher education students not prepared to have competency in parental involvement in education. The research aimed to explore their perceptions of the importance of parental involvement in elementary education. A 30-item online survey questionnaire, which employed a series of Likert-style statements in five types of parent involvement, was utilized to measure their perceptions. The study involved 1,459 undergraduate students majoring in elementary teacher education as participants, representing 72 study programs of universities and college schools in Indonesia. Descriptive and mean score comparison analyses were employed to make the obtained data meaningful. The finding revealed that the students rated parental involvement as an urgent aspect of elementary school education. The study discovered no significant difference between male and female students, significant differences among sophomore, junior, and senior students, and significant differences among students of public and private higher education institutions. The findings indicated that all respondents agreed on the importance of involvement and revealed implications for the elementary education study program
Investigating pre-service teachers’ perceptions on readability tools: a case study in Indonesia
The readability tools allow us to measure the readability of a text. The previous studies have elaborated the use of readability tools to analyze reading materials, but it is relatively sparse regarding the teaching of readability tools especially involving the second language teaching education (SLTE) program as a context. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the acceptance of pre-service English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher upon readability text tools. It covers their acceptance towards the tools, the extent to how the pre-service teachers accept the Web-FX and Readability Analyzer as readability tools and seeks for participants’ concerns using the tools. The study was conducted at one English Language Education Study Program at in East Java, Indonesia, involving 33 third-year undergraduate students taking pre-teaching program. Having incorporated a qualitative data analysis approach on the students’ text analysis reports and interviews, the study revealed that the participants have positive acceptance of the tools for several reasons. Some final concerns from pre-service teachers after readability tools teachings are presented, including suggestions for future research related to readability tools
Identifying common errors in polynomials of eighth grade students
This research aims to study and classify errors in polynomials made by secondary school students. The data for error identification was collected from exercise books of 72 eighth grade students. Three types of errors were examined: careless, computational, and conceptual errors. The errors were considered according to four topics in polynomials: similar terms of monomials; addition of polynomials; subtraction of polynomials; and multiplication of polynomials. It is found that students made the highest computational errors in identifying monomials’ similarity, which accounts for 17.86%. They have the highest percentage of making computational errors in the addition and subtraction of polynomials, which account for 10.88% and 12.04%, respectively. Lastly, they have the highest percentage of making careless errors in the multiplication of polynomials, which accounts for 14.44%. Furthermore, it can be seen that the source of errors is learners’ carelessness when writing the question and its answer. In addition, the basic knowledge of computing addition, subtraction, and multiplication of integers is the most crucial factor that leads to incorrect answers. Nevertheless, most students understand the principle of polynomials, but frequently make errors on other issues
Fuzzy Delphi method for A-level mathematics technological pedagogical and content knowledge module
This study sought to identify the elements for designing and developing the A-level mathematics technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) teaching module. The aim of the module was to incorporate various pedagogies and technological tools for helping mathematics teachers to trigger, maintain, as well as sustain students’ interest in learning mathematics. This study used the Fuzzy Delphi method to determine the consensus on how A-level mathematics instruction should be designed. A semi-structured interview had first been conducted to develop a questionnaire. Then, a group of 16 experts was consulted together to discuss their ratings and reach a consensus. The group of experts included educational technology and subject matter experts. Data analysis results showed that the experts accepted all these elements through the expert consensus value above 75%, the threshold value (d)≤0.2, and the Fuzzy score (A)≥α-cut value of 0.5. This research provides implication to A-level mathematics teachers to systematically create an environment that is more conducive to learning and that will ultimately lead to an increase level of students’ interest towards learning
Student satisfaction in the context of hybrid learning through sentiment analysis
With the incursion of data science into the academic field and the massification of social networks, it is possible to extract information on student satisfaction that contributes to feedback on teacher teaching strategies and methods. This article aims to determine student satisfaction with teaching performance, through sentiment analysis. Methodologically, the research is of a non-experimental longitudinal design, with a quantitative approach. Data collection was carried out through the social network Twitter, and data analysis was carried out through the sentiment analysis technique. As a result, it was identified that in the first week of class, the highest level of satisfaction was obtained, reaching 96.3% of the total number of students. Meanwhile, in the evaluation weeks, the highest level of dissatisfaction was reaching 29.17%. It is concluded that when going from totally virtual learning to hybrid learning, students express a certain level of dissatisfaction typical of a process of progressive adaptation. Therefore, teachers should take advantage of these findings to redesign assessment rubrics in the context of hybrid teaching. Aspects such as collecting opinions through social networks and extracting a degree of satisfaction through them apply in a crossed way to other professional fields
Analyzing students’ statistical literacy skills based on gender, grade, and educational field
Statistical literacy is fundamental competence to think critically and to conclude information based on data. This study aims to describe students’ statistical literacy according to gender, grade, and educational field. This research was a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design by explaining and analyzing the results using Rasch modeling, and students’ statistical literacy was categorized and described according to statistical literacy topics, gender, student grade level, and educational field. The respondent of this study was 271 students obtained through the stratified random sampling in Yogyakarta’s senior high school. The result of this study confirmed that the statistical literacy skills of students are still at a low level. The lowest aspect is the scope of conclusions, while the highest aspect is data production (medium level). There are no significant differences in statistical literacy skills based on gender and class. However, there are significant differences in statistical literacy based on field education. It indicates that policymakers or teachers should improve students’ statistical literacy skills by training or applying a learning model that focuses explicitly on statistical literacy skills
