Flipped classroom approach for enhancing linguistic competence
Nowadays, technology has become an indispensable instructional tool. Technology-integrated teaching approach has been recognized in research studies as an effective means to address the declination of the English language’s linguistic competence of the learners. This research determined the effectiveness of a flipped classroom, a technology-integrated teaching approach, to a specific group of Filipino language learners. Utilizing a quasi-experimental research design, 102 English pre-service teachers enrolled in a state university were selected purposively to be the participants of the study and were categorized into two groups, the very good, and the good groups. The expert-validated pre-post-test questionnaire, course syllabus, and lesson exemplars were used to gather the data on learners’ linguistic competence. Results of the paired t-test revealed a significant mean gain of the students’ scores both from very good and good groups pre-post the employment of the flipped classroom approach. The flipped classroom approach is one of the technology-integrated approaches to be used to augment the learners’ linguistic competence regardless of students’ group categories. It is recommended that the flipped classroom approach be used by teachers handling different disciplines delivered in English to mitigate the students’ dilemma on English language proficiency
Studies of multicultural education in three last decades: global trends and future directions in educational researches
The publication trend regarding multicultural education studies has been increasing in three last decades. Nevertheless, systematic studies providing comprehensive bibliographic and bibliometric review related to this issue has not been performed nor also reported in the electronic journals or conference proceeding. A systematic review combined to bibliometric analysis was used to present global trends and future directions in educational researches related to multicultural education. 284 eligible documents from Scopus database published in 2001–2023 were involved as the data. Results revealed that in the period of 2001–2023, publication trend of multicultural education studies slightly soared while citation trend on the documents regarding multicultural education studies relatively fluctuated. The productive and influential documents, authors, countries, institutions, and sources contributed most to the development of multicultural education studies. Moreover, a lot of authors and institutions in the world jointly worked and also generated research networking in conducting the studies of multicultural education, mainly authors come from United States and educational institutions located in United States. Additionally, at least there are several major emerging themes related to multicultural education studies such as methodology, learning environment, main topic in multicultural education, affective and cognitive domain, participant, and theoretical framework. The future researches related to this topic should develop valid, practical, and effective learning models for multicultural competence referring to culturally responsive transformative teaching approach
The total contribution of the direct and indirect influence of servant leadership on innovative work behavior
This study aimed to determine the total contribution of servant leadership variables directly or indirectly to the innovative work behavior of high school teachers. The research respondents were 158 teachers from Jakarta Capital Special Region, Bogor Regency, Bekasi City, and Bandung Regency, Indonesia. Data analysis technique using path analysis. The results showed that the total direct and indirect contribution of servant leadership variables to innovative work behavior through knowledge sharing was 97.3%. The remaining 2.7% comes from variables not examined in this study. The implications of this research can be used by school principals and education policymakers at the national and regional levels to strengthen servant leadership to create knowledge sharing in strengthening the innovative work behavior of teachers in senior high schools
Instructors’ perceptions and pedagogical approaches to online teaching in selected Malaysian private universities
Private university instructors in Malaysia faced obstacles in their adaptation to the online learning mode while holding their pre-existing academic duties. This research aimed to explore those obstacles, and observe how the instructors tailored their pedagogical approaches. The research employed a qualitative research design. We used convenience sampling to select eight instructors from three private universities in Malaysia using semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that the main challenges were instructors’ own workload and lessened time for professional development, the incompatibility of the provided multimedia with their teaching approaches, as well as the problem with their students’ readiness and participation. It was found that the instructors adapted their pedagogical approaches with a main focus on learners’ cognitive development, and this was hoped to be achieved through their choices of learning tools and multimedia, instructional strategies of collaborative and reflective learning, and consideration of learning outcomes and objectives. The instructors also incorporated their students’ feedback into their content development to increase the engagement. Interestingly, some instructors initiated their own content and approach, while receiving support from their institutes, peers, and other resources. The findings may contribute positively to instructor’s efforts in providing and maintaining an interactive, productive and stable learning environment
Development of the noise questionnaire in the online learning process and implications for counseling
Starting with online learning requires a lot of attention such as focus, comfortable sitting, and avoiding distractions such as noise. A noise questionnaire instrument is an evaluation tool designed to identify the experience of students in the online learning process. This instrument was developed based on a literature review on noise and online learning. The instrument first stage was given to 110 students and the instrument second stage was given to 460 students in seven universities in Indonesia, 99 male and 361 female respondents aged 18-30 years. The instrument was designed based on DeVito’s noise theory: physical noise, physiological noise, psychological noise, and semantic noise. The statistical test of the instrument used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to find the goodness of fit index model. The results of the noise instrument factor analysis show a fit model, acceptable validity, and high internal consistency (α=0.86). The findings of this study produce valid and reliable instruments for identifying noise indicators that are dominant in online learning activities. The results of identifying noise in online learning can be used to design guidance and counseling programs or plan actions to deal with noise in online learning according to the data obtained
The synergy between workforce, students, and lecturers in collaborative learning
This research focuses on applying technology in collaborative learning, specifically through online platforms that connect students and the workforce. It is objective is to enhance synergy among the workforce, students, and educators to improve learning quality. The case study methodology follows Creswell’s qualitative approach with five key steps: planning the case study; data collection; analysis; result interpretation; and reporting. The research explores innovative online platforms to create a comprehensive and diverse learning experience. Technology enables access to materials, virtual classrooms, e-books, mobile learning, and internship programs, fostering flexible and engaging education. Collaborative learning with workforce participation enhances effectiveness and skills. Students gain work experience related to their fields through active interaction with practitioners. At the same time, educators refine teaching methods and understand workforce demands-the synergy among the workforce, students, and educators’ mutually beneficial relationships. The workforce leverages student resources for problem-solving and innovation, while students enhance their networks. Educators gain input for curriculum improvement. The research enhances education quality, prepares students for the dynamic workforce, and aligns educational programs with industry demands. It emphasizes the importance of collaborative learning, integrating online platforms to increase skill development
Scientific communication: students’ proficiency for workplace readiness
Under the theme of “scientific communication proficiency for workplace readiness,” researchers conducted this mixed-method study to specify key elements that improve student’s proficiency for scientific communication and enhance the communicative competence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for the students. Data were collected using questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussion. The respondents and informants consisted of 351 STEM students, six STEM business executives, and three communication experts. The conceptual framework was designed based on a communicative competence model to identify relationship between skills, knowledge, and training history. The science communication model of existing core elements (CE) based on sender, message, channel, and receiver (SMCR) communication model was developed. The implication of the finding significantly escalates the practice of scientific communication. The study highlights the importance of considering different elements under SMCR in enhancing communication skills among STEM students. The expectations of business executives and communication experts’ views and feedback provided empirical inferences that significantly support the outcomes in terms of the practical implication phase. Based on the findings, the science communication model with key elements for work readiness is redesigned as the final outcome. The results could imply to enhance communication skills in various industries
The influence of student’s mathematical beliefs on metacognitive skills in solving mathematical problem
The current research aimed to understand the effect of mathematical beliefs of middle school students on their metacognitive skills in solving mathematical problems. In examining the matter, the study utilized a mixed method. In the first step, a linear regression test was utilized to determine the effect of belief on students’ metacognitive skills in solving geometry problems. Furthermore, a qualitative approach was used to compare the metacognitive skills of high and low-belief students. This study involved 72 middle school students sitting in the 8th grade at Tarakan 1 State Junior High School. Based on the linear regression results, it is known that students’ beliefs positively influenced their metacognitive skills in solving geometric problems. Furthermore, it was found that when both selected subjects with high and low beliefs started solving the problems, they started by planning. Then, they monitored what they had done, but there were differences in evaluating the solutions. Additionally, students who believe strongly in problem solving will be more aware of what they are thinking and thus have an impact on improving their learning outcomes
Successful dimension for evaluating leadership management in Islamic university
This research aims to test the dimensions of success in measuring leadership management and to find the factors that shape leadership in an excellent Islamic university (IU). Respondents totaled 422 participants from leaders and lecturers at six Islamic universities in Indonesia. partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis is used to test 8 dimensions, 35 constructs, and 17 hypotheses. Management leadership is determined by the dominant factor, namely job evaluation (IM4, λ=90.70%), and human resources (OR3, λ=74.40%) is the lowest factor. The ability of the structural model to explain the measurement of IU’s leadership management is 79.70%. Furthermore, the 17 hypotheses from 8 dimensions have a positive and significant influence. Measurable dimensions can be used to develop an effective management model to increase the performance and function of leadership. Through the results of this research, higher education management institutions can recommend study substances to comprehensively find out the leadership model to be applied by leaders so they are more skilled and expert in managing institutions in higher education
The effectiveness of integrated science, technology, engineering and mathematics project-based learning module
Physics is a tricky subject to learn, especially when it comes to students applying physics knowledge to the real world and its application. This paper aims to study the effectiveness of the integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics project-based learning (iSTEM-PjBL) module in physics on students’ belief-specific categories, i.e., real-world connection, conceptual connection and applied conceptual understanding. This research used the quasi-experimental model, employing a two-group pre-survey-post-survey design. Quantitative data were collected using the Colorado Learning Attitude about Science Survey (CLASS) instrument at two selected schools in Sabah, Malaysia, and Seoul, Korea. The sample size was 88 from Malaysia and 66 from Korea who learned classical mechanics. The students were divided into two groups, respectively, i.e., the experimental group (Malaysia=44, Korea=33) and the control group (Malaysia=44, Korea=33). Participants in the experimental group were intervened with the integrated STEM-PBL physics module, whilst participants in the control group learned physics through a conventional approach for eight weeks. Participants in both groups were then administered a pre-survey before and post-survey after the intervention. This research showed that the integrated STEM-PjBL physics module significantly improved students’ real-world connections, conceptual connections, and applied connections after the intervention. The implications and suggestions were also discussed to extend the research further
