Fear of failure among perfectionist students
Fear of failure (FOF) has been reported as a construct that hinders individuals from achieving higher, working harder, and even moving from one stage of development to another. Studies indicated that university students with traits perfectionism tend to develop FOF, which prevented them for achieving better accomplishment in their academic life. In order to obtain further knowledge to curb FOF among this population, this study investigates which one of the three dimensions of perfectionism (self-oriented, other-oriented, socially prescribed) is the main predictor of FOF. 351 participants from the target population of 4,000 undergraduate students from UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia were recruited via convenience sampling to provide us with their data through a Google Form. Perfectionism dimensions were measured by the multidimensional perfectionism scale and fear of failure by the performance failure appraisal inventory. The collected data was analyzed via simple and multiple regression by multiple regression technique, and the findings showed that self-oriented and other-oriented perfectionism did not significantly predict the fear of failure. However, socially prescribed perfectionism was the only significant predictor of the fear of failure among the perfectionism model, therefore indicating that it was the most significantly predictor as well. In conclusion, students are more likely to be afraid to fail when they believe that there is a social standard of perfection that they have to follow
Memorization and discussion methods effect on achievement and communication skills
This study aimed to determine learning outcomes and discuss the effect of the combination of memorization and small group discussion methods on students’ achievement and communication skills. A quantitative method was applied in this study with a quasi-experimental design. The subject of this study is 60 students in Islamic Education, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training (FTIK) at the Pontianak State Institute for Islamic Studies, divided into a control and an experimental group. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test from the control and experimental groups and then analyzed using the independent samples t-test using statistical software JASP version 0.16.4. The findings revealed that there are differences between outcome learning and communication skills between the control group which only uses the small group discussion method and the experimental group which employs a combination of memorization and small group discussion methods in the course of developing Islamic Education material. The findings of this study confirm that combining the two methods, memorization, and small group discussion, is highly effective in improving learning achievement and communication skills at the student level. Further research is suggested to explore and determine other factors affecting learning outcomes and methods
Improving student higher order thinking skills using SynecticHOTS-oriented learning model
The achievement of students’ learning outcomes in physics lessons has a low tendency, this is due to various factors, one of which is higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) based learning that has not been fully implemented in the learning process and assessment. This study aimed to determine the differences in the Synectic-HOTS learning model in physics compared to conventional learning models. This study used a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test–post-test nonequivalent control group design. The instrument used in this study is a two-tier test question that contains 20 items of HOTS aspect. The prerequisite test showed that the data was not homogeneous, while the results of the data homogeneity test were stated to be homogeneous. Therefore, a non-parametric test was carried out using the Mann-Whitney U-test. Based on the results of the data analysis, the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) for the pre-test was 0.111 and the post-test was 0.001 (p=.000<05). The effect size calculation shows that the Synectic learning model is effective in the medium category. These results indicate that the application of the SynecticHOTS model significantly improves HOTS when compared to conventional learning models. This work can open up insights to teachers about alternative, creative, and effective learning models to improve higher-order thinking skills and student learning outcomes
Student’s digital literacy competence and its implications for the learning process
This study measures and compares the digital literacy index between general and vocational high school students. The aim is to determine each student’s ability to understand and implement literacy skills in the digital space. The notes from the findings of this study are then related to the proper implementation of the learning process between the two groups of education levels. This study uses quantitative methods, with the research design as a survey. The population of this research is general and vocational high school students in Medan, Indonesia using a margin of error of 5%. The sampling technique in this study used the quota sampling method proportionally to 400 respondents, with 220 respondents coming from general high school education level and 180 respondents from vocational education level. The results of this study indicate that vocational high school students have a higher digital literacy index than general high school students
The perspectives of visual arts teachers on postmodernism
Postmodernism has evolved in the field of art, and its presence and definition have been the topic of several studies. The overall perspectives of the visual arts teachers on postmodernism are important for incorporating postmodernism issues into the high school curriculum in Turkey, as they are teaching art history and conveying the practice of visual arts. A review of the literature reveals that there are no comparable studies that take visual arts teachers’ perspectives on postmodernism into account. Therefore, this study aims to discover the perspectives of visual arts teachers on postmodernism. This article presents the findings and conclusions of the first research question of the Master’s thesis, titled “examination of the reflections of postmodernism on art education”. The study used a case study design, one of the qualitative research approaches. The sample of the study consisted of four visual arts teachers working in one of the central and three district schools in Yalova, Turkey. In the current research, two semi-structured interview forms and document analysis were utilized as data collection tools. The qualitative data were analyzed by the thematic analysis method. The themes of “teachers’ general perceptions”, “teaching process” and “reflection on students” were identified through the thematic analysis. This article includes a detailed analysis of the theme of “teachers’ general perceptions”. The results of the research identified the artistic and intellectual perspectives of the participating teachers toward postmodernism as outstanding features
Chinese business English undergraduates’ speaking proficiency: a developed-module effect
The rapid growth of English in the world has resulted in its vital role in diverse domains. However, the outcomes of learners' speaking skills remain controversial. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of the developed teaching speaking module on the speaking proficiency of 96 Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) business English undergraduates at the target applied university in China. This module integrates content-based instruction (CBI) and a three-stage skill development approach, namely awareness-raising, appropriation, and autonomy (3As approach). A quantitative study with a pretest and posttest quasi-experiment design was carried out at an applied university within an interventional period of 10 weeks, employing pretests and posttests as data collection tools. The quantitative data were analyzed using the SPSS 29 version suggesting that this teaching-speaking module yields significantly improved speaking proficiency among Chinese EFL undergraduates in business English than the traditional classroom has done. These findings shed a favorable light on the development of curriculum and instruction for teaching English for specific purposes (ESP) and the education of English majors in China
Exploratory factor analysis of two most widely used materialism measurements
The material value scale (MVS) and the aspiration index (AI) are among the most prominent measurements of materialism in research. As the names indicate, the MVS measures materialism in terms of materialistic values, whereas AI measures it in the matter of aspirations. Although both instruments have been widely used in research, the question of whether materialistic values and aspirations are independent of each other remains open for examination. The answer to this question is important, considering the inconsistencies in the results of past research. Therefore, this study aims to assess the construct's similarity and dissimilarity between both self-report materialism measurements resulting from exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The study was conducted online in Indonesia in 2019, with 610 participants, Indonesian version of MVS and AI, the software of Jamovi and R Studio. The analysis consisted of the Bartlett test, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test, parallel analysis, minimum rank factor analysis, EFA, and reliability (Cronbach’s α). The result showed there was an intersection, but each measurement had a portion of each independence higher, hence was no sufficient evidence of similarity between both materialism constructs. The construct of materialism as value and materialism as aspiration is proposed as different. Limitations of the study and implications for research were discussed
The impact of video-based virtual reality training on critical thinking and cognitive load
Online learning, including in higher education, is an active part of the modern educational landscape. Spherical video-based immersive virtual reality (SV-IVR) is useful in this field. This study aimed to determine the impact of teaching with the use of SV-IVR on the critical thinking and cognitive load of 140 students. The findings of the study revealed that students exhibited low levels of mental effort and mental load based on the observed indicators. Compared to the traditional teaching method, the SV-IVR model had a better effect on improving students' critical thinking skills. The findings can help teachers develop new learning models using video-based virtual reality
“The internet is slow!”: building a context-oriented learning management system
In this study, researchers analyzed the current distance learning situation in the Philippines as part of a four-phase project to create a Filipinized learning management system (LMS) for nursing students and educators. A mixed-methods approach was utilized by conducting 17 online focus group discussions (FGDs) in selected nursing universities from the Philippines and disseminating an online survey with a sample size of 80 nursing educators and student participants. Results revealed that both nursing students and educators faced barriers in their online learning and teaching experiences and in using LMS. Educators showed how slow internet connections and power outages, lack of training with the use of technology and LMS, lack of technology resources, and lower student engagement hampered the delivery of learning. Students also shared problems with instability of internet connection, teacher-student and student-student communication, and learning environment. Both teachers and students also recognized time efficiency, cost-effectiveness, the accessibility of learning materials, and flexibility in learning as benefits of online learning. The study provided an in-depth understanding of the situation of Filipino online nursing students and educators that may be used in developing the Filipinized LMS and in building educational policies and programs for online learnin
