Bloom-epistemic and sentiment analysis hierarchical classification in course discussion forums
Online discussion forums are widely used for active textual interaction between lecturers and students, and to see how the students have progressed in a learning process. The objective of this study is to compare appropriate machine-learning models to assess sentiments and Bloom’s epistemic taxonomy based on textual comments in educational discussion forums. The proposed method is called the hierarchical approach of Bloom-Epistemic and Sentiment Analysis (BE-Sent). The research methodology consists of three main steps. The first step is the data collection from the internal discussion forum and YouTube comments of a Web Programming channel. The next step is text preprocessing to annotate the text and clear unimportant words. Furthermore, with the text dataset that has been successfully cleaned, sentiment analysis and epistemic categorization will be done in each sentence of the text. Sentiment analysis is divided into three categories: positive, negative, and neutral. Bloom’s epistemic is divided into six categories: remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. This research has succeeded in producing a course learning subsystem that assesses opinions based on text reviews of discussion forums according to the category of sentiment and epistemic analysis
Effectiveness of learning mathematics derivative materials using modules equipped with cooperative models in high schools
The aim of the research is to improve the learning outcomes of mathematics material in high schools. At the high school level, there are three materials that are difficult for students to understand, one of which is derivative material. In fact, student learning outcomes in low-derived material. Difficulties arise because teachers rarely write teaching modules. There is difficulty understanding the definition (71.42%), concepts (71.42%), principles (57.14%), and skills (42.85%). In the needs analysis, 90% of students had difficulty with derivative material and the teacher was of the opinion that 85% of students had low scores on derived material. The research used research and development (R&D) method. The stages of research are needs analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. As a result, the validation of material experts is 91.72%, math teachers are 92.42%, and students are 95.90%, all three are categorized as very good. Students who do not use the module get an average score of 65.51, and students who are assisted by the module get an average score of 87.20. In conclusion, there is a significant difference between using a module and not using a module of 21.69. The research interprets the developed modules to significantly improve student learning outcomes
Incorporating financial literacy in video clips amongst high school students
Young adults with enough financial knowledge can commonly make good financial decisions, whereas those who lack financial literacy are always burdened by student loans and credit card debts. Acquiring adequate financial knowledge has become crucial among young adults. The present study investigated the effectiveness of incorporating financial literacy into videos among high school students. The video clips were incorporated into financial literacy in the economics curriculum to engage students and facilitate their learning of financial literacy. This study employed the mixed-methods explanatory design. The data analysis procedures in this design involved collecting the quantitative data, analyzing the data, and using the data to guide the follow-up interviews. A total of 327 students participated in this study. The results showed a significant change in students’ behavior regarding financial literacy (F=271.847, p<.05). Financial literacy should be instilled to students from primary school through tertiary education to ensure long-term sustainability effects
Developing teachers’ professional performance based on dual intelligence: a mediation perspective
Teacher professional performance is crucial for schools to improve students’ academic performance and success. However, research on this issue still needs to be completed, including the factors influencing it. Therefore, this study focuses on investigating the role of interpersonal communication skills (ICS) in mediating cultural intelligence (CI) and emotional intelligence (EI) affect teachers’ professional performance. The participants are 455 Indonesian teachers selected by accidental sampling from three provinces in Indonesia. Data was collected by distributing Likert scale questionnaires and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) performed by LisRel 8.80. All hypotheses were supported (significant). It means CI, EI, and ICS are related to teachers’ professional performance; CI and EI link to teachers’ ICS; and ICS mediates CI and EI affect teachers’ professional performance. This evidence promotes a new model of CI and EI affecting teachers’ professional performance via ICS. It provides a theoretical contribution, and practical implication requires critical discussion among researchers, scientists, and practitioners
The impact of age on second language acquisition: a critical review
Age plays a significant role in second language acquisition (SLA). Research indicates that the ability to learn a second language declines with age. This study reviewed relevant studies on the impact of age on SLA in order to attain the best results as language learning methods should be tailored to the learner's age and specific needs. The results showed that younger learners are more proficient in acquiring a second language due to their brain's plasticity, which enables them to learn new information quickly. They can easily acquire the language’s pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary through exposure and immersion. As learners age, their ability to learn a second language decreases. After adolescence, the brain becomes less plastic, and the acquisition of a second language becomes more challenging. Research also shows that language also has a positive impact on a country’s economic development, as well as improving the international relations of local entrepreneurs. However, adult learners can still learn a second language, but it may take more time and effort. Moreover, the motivation and learning strategies of language learners also play an essential role in SLA. Young learners may not have a strong motivation to learn a second language, while adult learners may have a higher motivation due to professional or personal reasons. Age is a crucial factor in SLA, but it is not the only determining factor. The learner’s motivation, learning strategies, and exposure to the second language also play a significant role in the acquisition of a second language
Practices of distributed leadership in two Islamic secondary schools
Purpose-distributed leadership (DL) continues to draw practitioners and researchers’ attention in the context of education leadership as early as the 21st century. While an increasing amount of literature strongly advises principals to shift toward DL practices, there is a paucity of studies that indicate the extent to which this shift is taking place in practice across Islamic secondary schools. Consequently, this study investigates the distributed of leadership practices of two Islamic secondary schools located in two different countries. Design/methodology/approach-the study uses a collective case study methodology with a mixed-method approach, and collected data from 30 school teachers and interviews six school teachers. Findings-the findings reveal that both selected Islamic secondary schools have a definite hierarchy decided by top management. The findings also indicate that when leadership roles are distributed among classroom teachers, the schools do not seem to have fixed criteria. In addition, the findings illustrate that novice teachers are slowly given responsibilities and prepared to take on leadership roles. Implications–the findings could serve as a supportive literature in practicing DL across Islamic secondary schools to reduce the workload of headteachers. The findings further link DL to the development of a professional learning community though teacher leadership. Originality/value–The significance and originality of this research arguably falls along the fact that; it is the first of its kind to empirically investigate DL practices across Islamic secondary schools in two different geographical locations
The acceptance model for camera simulators as a learning media for Indonesian vocational student
This study investigates the acceptance of camera simulator technology as a learning media by Indonesian vocational high school (VHS) students and examines the relationships among influencing factors. It proposes an acceptance model integrating the technology acceptance model (TAM) 3 and the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). Ten factors impacting technology acceptance were identified, resulting in the formulation of 15 hypotheses regarding inter-construct relationships. In this empirical study, a quantitative approach was employed, distributing questionnaires to 200 students at Public Vocational High School 10 in Bandung, specializing in broadcasting and filmmaking programs. After analyzing 145 valid responses, the study progressed in two stages: the measurement model and the structural model. The evaluation of the measurement model confirmed the validity of all indicators and constructs, ensuring compliance with the established standards. In the structural model evaluation, one construct (computer anxiety) and four inter-construct relationships were excluded. This research enhances our understanding of factors influencing camera simulator technology acceptance among VHS students in Indonesia, shedding light on the complexities of their decision-making process in adopting this educational tool
How do elementary school teachers shape their students' self-regulated and creativity in learning mathematics?
So far, mathematics learning has only focused on a curriculum that prioritizes outcomes over processes, so attitudes are rarely the target of learning. In fact, a positive attitude, especially self-regulated and creativity, is needed in learning mathematics and must have been formed since elementary school. This research, with the aim of describing efforts to establish independence and creativity in learning mathematics by elementary school teachers in West Kalimantan, uses a qualitative descriptive method with a questionnaire as a research instrument. The results of the study show that: (i) the formation of self-regulated learning by the teacher is very good, especially in the indicators of disciplined behavior. However, it needs to be improved on indicators of behaving based on one's own initiative; and (ii) the formation of learning creativity by the teacher is very good, especially on the indicator of having a great curiosity. However, it needs to be improved on indicators of diligent behavior and not getting bored easily
Effectiveness of AutistAR to enhance communication and social skills among children with autism
Individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have serious fundamental deficits in communication, social, inventiveness, and constructive skills. In the age of technology, children with disabilities frequently employ assistive technologies to aid in their learning and support the rehabilitation process, particularly for autism. Individuals with ASD require technology-based tools such as software or applications that could assist them with communication, language, organizing skills, and information processing. This research developed an augmented reality (AR) application integrating picture exchange communication systems (PECS) to aid children’s communication and social skills. A single-case experimental design (SCED) method was used to analyze the features and effectiveness of AutistAR. The study included a sample of two individuals diagnosed with ASD, characterized by restricted communication and social abilities. The result revealed that there was an improvement in overall communication and social skills in both participants. The ramification of the findings is further explored
Developing technological pedagogical content knowledge skills during teaching practicum
This study investigates the efforts of Indonesian pre-service teachers in developing their technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) skills during teaching practicum, explores the obstacles they encounter in this process, and examines their responses to the challenges of TPACK skills development. Employing qualitative narrative inquiry as the research method, the study interviews five pre-service teachers from various study programs to gain insights into their experiences. The findings demonstrate that Indonesian pre-service teachers employ diverse strategies to enhance their TPACK skills, including observing experienced teachers, participating in workshops or online courses, reading relevant literature on TPACK, and consistently integrating TPACK into their teaching practice. However, they face obstacles such as a lack of confidence in their teaching abilities, limited time and resources for reflective practice, and inadequate self-awareness regarding their skills. To overcome these obstacles, they respond by collaborating with peers and mentors, engaging in reflective teaching practice, and setting goals for each practicum session. The study provides valuable insights for teacher training institutions (TTIs), educators, practitioners, and policymakers, facilitating the implementation of more effective strategies for integrating TPACK in future events
