    Get PDF
Outdoor learning encompasses a wide range of educational activities, from local natural play areas to formal school curriculum classes. Despite growing evidence of its benefits, outdoor learning is still underutilized in Malaysia’s early childhood education system. Hence, this study aims to investigate preservice teachers’ perceptions of the impact of outdoor learning on children’s well-being since future teachers’ perception is the most important indicator in predicting their intention to use it in the future. A quantitative approach was used, and the questionnaire was distributed to 63 pre-service teachers studying at Universiti Selangor, Malaysia. Based on the findings, the majority of respondents agree that outdoor learning benefits children’s well-being, especially their social and psychosocial well-being. Thus, this study provides insight into the significance of outdoor learning on children’s learning experiences and that it should be utilized more frequently in the classroom

Exploring faculty profile and technology transfer initiatives of a newly-instated state university in the Philippines

    Get PDF
The current university standards of research productivity focus on commercially adopted innovations in various industries. However, as a newly instated university in the Philippines, the Sorsogon State University’s research outputs in various disciplines are still lacking the necessary technology readiness level (TRL) that the industry requires. This descriptive method of research using correlation design utilized archival sources to determine the association between the faculty profile and the TRL of research outputs of the university. It was found that more than half of the 194 regular faculty members are specializing in soft sciences which resulted in the dominance of the basic type of research (250 out of 296) conducted from 2015 to 2020. Using the nine-point National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scale, the study revealed the right-skewed distribution of TRL assessment of faculty research outputs by area of specialization, almost all reaching TRL 1-4 and were not transferred to the intended beneficiaries. Factors such as academic rank, area of expertise, and highest educational attainment of faculty members were significantly associated with the TRL of their research outputs. Faculty members with the appropriate expertise and education preparation may be given the opportunity to collaborate with potential industry partners as part of the re-engineering process of the university’s research function

Validation of the factor structure of the motivated strategies for learning questionnaire

    Get PDF
In recent years, the motivated strategies for learning questionnaire (MSLQ) has been used to assess students’ motivational orientations and utilization of various learning strategies. Due to its significant effects on student outcomes such as academic performance and careers, research on the factor structure of motivated strategies for learning has received increasing attention. However, the existing literature indicates a dearth of studies focusing on the MSLQ dimensions in Vietnam. Therefore, this study aimed to ascertain the factor structure of the 31-item Student Motivation Scale (SMS), which is a subset of the larger 81-item MSLQ, in the context of Vietnam. The study utilized the Vietnamese version of the SMS to collect data from 317 high school students in Vietnam. The factorial analysis showed that the SMS has its original six-factor structure, which is made up of task value (TV), control beliefs, self-efficacy for learning and performance (SLP), test anxiety (TA), and intrinsic goal orientation (IGO). The present study recommended that school leaders and teachers should use the SMS to assess students’ motivation in the context of Vietnamese education

    Get PDF
Indigenous tribe students have difficulty in their education. Only a few of them managed to complete the tertiary level. This study aims to explore and understand deeply the efforts made by these first scholars in obtaining educational economic, social and cultural capital. This research is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach to understand deeply the economic, social and cultural capital of scholars from the Dayak Meratus Tribe. The data were collected through interviews with 17 participants such as first- generation scholars in the family, their parents, and teachers. The results showed that economic capital was built by parents through great effort on gardening, farming, and trading. Meanwhile, the social and cultural capital built by parents was very limited. Social capital and cultural capital are provided by the extended family, communities and non-profit institutions. Role of school is very limited to build social and cultural capital. The study recommends school administrators implement professional development programs for teachers and counsellors to improve their competence in building student social and cultural capital. Government should decide a policy to support indigenous tribe education not just financial support, but social and cultural capital support, and job opportunity for them in their community

    Get PDF
While some studies about language learning strategies (LLS) have been held in Colombia, there is still ample room for research. Particularly, an explanatory sequential mixed methods design can offer insights into how gender, grade level, and perceived language proficiency may influence Colombian students’ selection of strategies for learning English. Furthermore, teachers’ explicit instruction of strategies has not commonly been contrasted with students’ reported use of strategies. This study sought to bridge existing gaps by exploring the favored learning strategies of Colombian learners and teachers at the secondary school level. Data were collected employing the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning and semi-structured interviews with selected participants. The findings suggest that students favor social and metacognitive strategies and use affective strategies to a lesser extent. No significant differences between gender and the overall use of learning strategies were found. Conversely, significant relationships involving students’ grade level, self-perception of English proficiency, and the reported use of LLS were observed. This investigation highlights the importance of boosting affective strategies, exploring teachers’ roles in explicit strategies-based instruction, and integrating diverse types of data to explore the complexity of learning strategies. Recommendations for future inquiries are presented
