Factors contributing to fourth graders’ mathematics achievement: a multilevel study
This study aims to determine the factors that influence the mathematics achievement of grade 4 students in Indonesia at the student and school level using Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2015 data. Sample in this study were all grade 4 students in Indonesia who participated in TIMSS 2015. There are 4,025 students from 230 schools. The TIMSS 2015 data used in this study was analyzed using a multilevel model (MLM) using the R package ‘lme4’ software. The results of this study indicate that i) the school visited by each student accounts for the majority of the variance in the mathematics achievement of Indonesian grade 4 students (51%); ii) factors related to students’ self-construction of mathematics such as attitude-toward mathematics (ATM) and self-concept and factors related to schools such as socioeconomic status (SES) school, self-concept school, school readiness, general school resources, and teacher education level was found to influence students’ mathematics achievement positively and significantly, where self-concept school was the strongest predictor compared to other predictors; and iii) variables at the student and school level explain 35% of the total variance in Indonesian grade 4 students’ mathematics achievement
Wayang Edu: digital application for Wayang Kulit Kelantan
Wayang Kulit Kelantan (WKK) is a traditional performance that has a long process in the learning session. This covers various aspects such as the background of the performance, repertoire, gambalan (puppets), as well as musical instruments and songs. This knowledge requires at least a year to understand the skills and techniques used. Therefore, Wayang Edu is a digital application built based on the analyze, design, development, implementation, evaluation (ADDIE) model to save learning time with traditional practitioners. The majority of users acknowledge that Wayang Edu offers a wealth of information and enables them to gain in-depth knowledge. Consequently, utilizing visual elements to convey messages is more impactful compared to traditional learning methods. Apart from that, Wayang Edu can be used anywhere at the user’s convenience. With the interaction found in the application, Wayang Edu has been used by students as a platform to get additional information about WKK
Student perceived value of engineering labs: a lab assessment instrument
Traditionally, engineering labs are expected to reinforce fundamental science, technology, engineering, and mathematical concepts that students need to demonstrate learning in the discipline. The emergence of online degrees, the COVID pandemic, and the development of virtual lab technologies have advanced how educators design lab courses. As these new laboratory environments and practices emerge, the need for tools to evaluate how students experience and value these labs are needed. The Student Perceived Value of an Engineering Laboratory (SPVEL) assessment instrument was designed to address this need. SPVEL is framed on the Technology Acceptance Model, Inputs-Environment-Outcome Conceptual Model, and Engineering Role Identity model. In this work, the SPVEL is validated for in-person engineering laboratories. An Exploratory Load Factor analysis was conducted on the responses to twenty-five questionnaire items using a dataset of 208 participants. The Principal Components Method was employed to extract five factors. Cronbach’s alphas for data reliability for each factor ranged from 0.65 to 0.93, indicating high internal consistency. SPVEL provides a mechanism for elucidating students’ perception of their laboratory experiences, how these experiences influence their engineering role identities, and how students value laboratory experiences as preparatory and reflective of the skills needed for their careers in engineering
Effectiveness of generative learning strategies based on mobile learning technologies in higher education
The paper aims to comprehensively assess the effectiveness of generative learning strategies (GLS) using mobile learning technologies (MLT) in higher education, based on a quasi-experiment and quantitative and qualitative analysis. Methods included concept mapping, round table discussions, monitoring, computer testing, and statistical analysis. GLS with MLT demonstrated enhanced performance in Practical Ukrainian and English Language Courses. MLT-based GLS optimized teacher workload by reducing assignment checking time. Respondents rated MLT-based GLS for Ukrainian/English at 7.8/10. Effective methods included self-review, text correction, and concept mapping. The study validates MLT-based GLS in higher education, improving student performance and easing teacher tasks. Further research is planned for literature studies
Are students’ ethical beliefs in an academic setting related to ethical decision-making in the workplace?
When academic integrity is maintained not only in the framework of education but also in professionals’ lives, educational institutions have a moral commitment to generate graduates of high quality for the greater community. Graduates are expected to be both competent and ethical in their professional lives. This study builds on previous academic integrity research to delve into students’ ethical decision-making in real-world situations. During regular class time, undergraduate students from public and private universities in Surabaya, Indonesia, were surveyed (N=496). Using a two-sample t-test approach, the current study found students’ perceptions of their ethical perspective and situations in the workplace differed from their perceptions of themselves in current academic environment. This finding is worrisome because students who perceive themselves as lacking moral consistency believe that they have strong ethical convictions. Even though there was evidence to back up Lawson’s claim that the usefulness of an action is more essential than its ethicality, a workplace ethical decision reveals an anomaly in the operation of ethical decision-making. This study highlights the significance of cultivating risk-related decision-making throughout the educational process and should be encouraged as positive stimulant that prepares students for the ethical difficulties of the professional world
The effectiveness of local wisdom-based interactive digital module on students’ critical thinking disposition
Local wisdom-based interactive digital module are alternative teaching materials to facilitate meaningful learning and experience, to stimulate the use of thinking skills including critical thinking dispositions. This study applied quasi-experimental design with pretest and posttest control group. Respondents involved in this study were 109 students from senior high school in Bengkulu, Indonesia. The class selection was carried out randomly to determine the interactive digital module class (X1), the e-module class (X2), and the control class (K). Students’ critical thinking dispositions were measured through the Critical Thinking Disposition in Biology Test (CTDBT) instrument which included 10 questions for each of the seven disposition indicators. The data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Levene test, one-way ANOVA test, and LSD. After the data were known to be normally distributed and homogeneous, an ANOVA test was carried out with the result that there was a significant difference in the experimental class and the control class on students’ critical thinking disposition scores, namely 0.008<0.05. This showed that interactive module improve students’ critical thinking dispositions, compared to e-module and control classes. The critical thinking disposition which increased significantly was shown in the truth-seeking indicator. However, the e-module class did not differ significantly from the control class in improving students’ critical thinking dispositions. Therefore, teachers can use local wisdom-based interactive digital module in biology learning
The effect of Islam and science integration implementing on science learning in Indonesia: a meta-analysis
National education aims to produce dedicated, religious, moral individuals and cognitive intelligence. Applying students’ Islamic values through integrating Islam and science in science learning is one of the strategies that can be used to achieve these goals. Integrating Islam and science in science learning can direct the formation of knowledge about science concepts and improve students’ attitudes and spiritual skills. This study aims to analyze the effect of integrating Islam and science in science learning. This study explores the effect of integrating Islam and science in science learning with meta-analysis research by calculating effect size (ES). Research data were obtained from 38 studies from national and international journals. The results showed that integrating Islam and science in science learning has a significant impact, as seen from the ES of 0.658. It is explained that science learning integrating Islam and science can be an alternative learning method. Integrating Islam and science into science learning is an alternative educational method to achieve national education goals that can increase students’ intellectual and spiritual values. The results of this study can be utilized as a reference in the learning process and the development of teaching materials in science learning in the future
Students’ interests and attitudes toward science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education teaches students critical thinking skills that they can use to solve problems even after they enter the workforce. This study aimed to i) determine student attitudes toward the STEM field in each school area; ii) determine student interest in the STEM field in each school area; and iii) determine the correlation between student attitudes toward the STEM field and school area and student interest in STEM. This was a quantitative study with a cross-sectional survey design. The sample for this study came from Boyolali Regency in Central Java, Indonesia, and was divided into three groups: rural schools (24%), suburban schools (36.2%), and urban schools (39%). The proportional stratified random sampling technique was used to select the research sample of students in grades 7–9. The Spearman Rank technique was used for data analysis. The results showed that there is a strong relationship between students’ attitudes toward STEM, school area, and interest in STEM careers. On the other hand, there is a weak correlation between students’ attitudes toward STEM, the school environment, and their interest in STEM careers
Research trend on dyscalculia by bibliometric analysis during 2017-2022
Dyscalculia is the inability to perform simple numerical calculations in everyday life. However, no one has researched this topic worldwide in about two years. This study aimed to investigate the research trends on dyscalculia through bibliometric studies and research issues related to dyscalculia in the Scopus database starting 2017 to October 2022. The sample consisted of 536 total documents. The results showed that scientific publications on dyscalculia fluctuated. In the next five years, its movements cannot be predicted. The highest number of document types is articles, which is 369. The number of cross-border documents from 2017 to 2022 is in the United States, as many as 75 papers, and in Italy, 74 copies. These two countries are more dominant on the topic of dyscalculia. Furthermore, 536 documents comprising 94.4% of articles were used in English. In general, in research on dyscalculia, researchers produce four out of five significant clusters: patient, approach, task, and grade. However, topics related to dyscalculia and mathematics often studied are deficit students, deficit addition and subtraction, mathematics difficulty, instruction, and primary school. The results can be used to shed light on developing tendencies in dyscalculia investigations and suggest directions for future studies
Evaluation of students’ environmental attitude instruments: exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis
One’s environmental attitude can predict human behavior toward the environment. This study aimed to validate the environmental attitude instrument with the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in ethnoscience-integrated (Ethno-STEM) approach. The questionnaire consisted of 16 items and was tested on 159 eighth-grade students. Data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The communality value of three instrument items was less than 0.5, so they were excluded in EFA stage 1. The EFA stage 2 test results showed that the 13 instrument items had a factor loading of more than 0.5 and were categorized into five factors. The CFA stage 1 was conducted using linear structural relations (LISREL) and obtained thet-value for all items in factors 1-4 more than the t-table, so they were declared valid. Factor 5 was omitted in CFA test stage 2 due to invalid items. The CFA test results showed that the t-count of the four factors was more than the t-table. Based on the goodness of fit value, the model and measurement matrices were the same (model fit). Thus, the environmental attitude instrument items are declared valid, and the model is fit.
