    The interplay of factors affecting online learning experience in higher education

    Education has undergone a profound transformation, transitioning significantly from traditional face-to-face instructional approaches to a predominant reliance on online learning methodologies. This sudden change leaves questions on how to provide an affective and satisfying online leaning for students. As prior studies revealed, many factors affect the success of implementing online learning, specifically for higher education students. As a response, this quantitative study was intended to investigate the interplay of factors affecting online learning experience in higher education namely anxiety, motivation for learning, self-directed learning, online learning attitude, and computer-internet self-efficacy. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) included 20 items of online survey distributed to undergraduate students (n=329) from several faculties at one Indonesian university to explore this issue. This study used the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) application to explore the interplay among six constructs. The results showed that all six constructs namely anxiety, motivation for learning, self-directed learning, online learning attitude, computer-internet self-efficacy, and online learning experience were positively associated. It meant that those factors were statistically proven to affect students’ online learning experiences. Educators could use these results as a consideration in implementing online learning more effectively. Further implications of pedagogical practice and further research are discussed

    Research productivity on science learning: a bibliometric study international from 2013 to 2023

    This research focuses on evaluating research productivity in the realm of science learning using various bibliometric indicators. A total of 4,942 scientific publications were taken from the Scopus database from the period 2013–2023, applying related keyword searches. The result is presented in graphical form. Studies also use VOSviewer and Biblioshiny tools through R to evaluate network visualizations and find the most prolific authors, number of publications and citations, country representatives, organizational and university contributions, publishers, and frequently appearing words. The results reveal a growing trend in total publications in the past 10 years of research. Out of a total of 4,942 scientific publications, NA NA is one of the most prolific authors. The USA and China are the most productive countries when it comes to publishing research in the field. The University of California, National Taiwan Normal University, and Purdue University are reported to be the top three productive organizations in the field of science learning. The study also looked at collaboration and cooperation between authors, countries, and organizations in visualization analysis. The results of the word that often appears are reported to be that science, education, learning, and effects have maximum link strength

    Teaching perspective during COVID-19: coping and stress

    This study aimed to analyze the indicators related to coping and stress or burnout perceived by teachers who worked virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic; it presented a descriptive quantitative approach. The data collection technique used was a survey and a self-administered questionnaire as the instrument used, structured in five dimensions: stressful situations during virtual work, perceived feelings, teacher coping, perception of optimism, and lifestyle assumed due to the pandemic. The sample selected for the study was composed of 97 teachers who experienced virtual teaching in various regions of Peru. The study concluded that teachers experienced stressful situations, made strong sacrifices, faced and sought alternatives, and were assertive and calm. They have had both positive and negative feelings about remote education. This survey showed optimistic changes, making teachers strive to adopt a new lifestyle dedicated to training independently and improving technological skills, among other aspect

    Contemporary education: globalization and transformation process under the influence of artificial intelligence

    This study is aimed to investigate the problem of globalization and transformation processes in contemporary education under the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on the basis of systemic literature review, to examine AI implications in education and to outline the opportunities for AI research in future. To achieve the objective, we analyzed 159 articles published in Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, EBSCO, PubMed, Index Copernicus, and Google Scholar databases between 2019 and 2023. The research was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 statement in four phases: reference search, selection of relevant papers, specific analysis, evaluation of publications’ contributions and preparing the review. The results show that a great number of scientific publications are related to AI research. We found that most of the articles were published in Asia, Europe, and North America in 2022. AI tools are most used while training medical students, information technologies (IT) specialists, engineers, business or management students. The analysis of publications showed that AI is used for data analytics, introduction of personalized learning, providing feedback, online learning, and automated assessment most often. We consider that AI-driven technologies currently play an important role in education and the number of publications testify that its implementations will extend in future. The study has contributions for outlining the role of AI-related tools in educational process

    Development and refinement of the interview protocol: interview questions for international school teacher retention

    For novice researchers, creating a list of interview questions as part of the interview procedure to collect data for addressing the research questions is always a challenge. Despite several studies have provided vital suggestions for novice researchers in developing and refining interview questions, few studies offer a clear path for designing and improving interview questions. The suggested guidelines from past research lack empirical evidence, particularly in the field of education. This study aimed to present the process of developing and refining an interview protocol used in an international school teacher retention study. This study suggested and tested five phases in the development and refinement of a qualitative interview protocol: i) establishing preliminary questions based on a literature review; ii) ensuring alignment of interview questions with research questions; iii) constructing an inquiry-based conversation; iv) receiving feedback on interview protocols; and v) piloting the interview protocols. It provides comprehensive and user-friendly guidance for novice researchers in developing qualitative instruments. Using this roadmap can help novice researchers to prepare for the interview process, remain open to new findings and enhance the effectiveness of qualitative interview tools

    Classroom language training for non-English pre-service teachers: a professional development project

    As the English language is required to be used beyond English subject classrooms in English as a foreign language (EFL) country, teachers from various disciplines, such as math and science, may find it challenging when having to conduct the course in English. Therefore, this professional development project aimed to address the issue of math and science pre-service teachers lacking classroom language knowledge when teaching in an EFL setting. The project involved a month-long training program for pre-service teachers on how to use English classroom language in teaching Math and Science to elementary and high school students. Pre- and post-training video recordings were collected to evaluate the linguistic development of the participants in classroom language use. Additionally, journal entries were collected to know the participants' insights on pedagogical growth and perceptions when using English in teaching content lessons. The findings indicated a significant improvement in the participants' classroom language use in various areas such as greetings and lesson introductions, feedback and instructions, classroom management, requests and questions, and lesson conclusions. The pre-service teachers also reflected on their pedagogical development in their journals. The article discusses some implications of the project that could benefit similar initiatives in EFL settings that use English as partial or full medium of instruction

    Improvement of engineering student’s learning outcomes in high schools using adaptive educational hypermedia system

    This was a research and development (R&D) which aims to develop adaptive educational hypermedia system (AEHS) learning media. The use of AEHS based on learning style in supporting the online learning process is considered very effective for use by engineering students because it can be accessed via mobile devices which can make it easier for students to learn and has an effect on increasing learning outcomes, this is supported by several inputs from experts through expert learning design tests, learning instrument experts, learning media experts and learning outcome measurement experts with the assessment results included in the very good category. The participants in this study were informatics engineering students, totaling 100 students. Small group tests were conducted for participants and obtained a gain score of 0.735 included in the 'high' category. The pretest and posttest have been carried out and the results show that the average posttest score is greater than the pretest value. A comparison between the use of AEHS developed with web-based learning was carried out and it can be concluded that the use of AEHS based on learning styles further improves student learning outcomes in informatics engineering compared to web-based learning

    English learning autonomy among vocational college students in China: based on the three-aspect model

    Based on the three-aspect model of learner autonomy, this study examines levels of English learning autonomy and potential correlation factors, such as gender, admission sources, and field of majors, in a newly-built vocational college in China. The study employs a random sampling survey method and surveyed 280 students from a Chinese public vocational college. After data analysis with quantitative methods, this study found that 48.6% respondents presented high-level English learning autonomy, followed by 43.6% and 7.9% students with moderate-level and low-level English learning autonomy respectively. Additionally, vocational college students developed moderate self-management learning ability (mean=3.57) and autonomous behaviors (mean=3.48) remained to be improved even though vocational college developed high level of autonomous psychology (mean=3.81). With regard to influential factors of English learning autonomy among vocational college students, admission sources can be considered as the most important factor to determine different levels of English learning autonomy, but no significant correlation exists between English learning autonomy and gender or field of majors. In response to such situation, suggestions are put forward to enhance English learning autonomy from the perspective of learning agenda, learning strategies, selfassessment, reflection, and digital learning materials

    The 21st-century skills scales: many facet Rasch measurements

    This study aims to develop a 21st century skills scale for prospective school counselor. The method used is the research and development. The data were analyzed using content analysis/expert judgment with many-facet Rasch model (MFRM). Three facets were employed: scale, item, and measurement criteria. The initial version of the scale comprises 129 items measuring four aspects: way of thinking, way of working, tools for working, and living in the world. However, 78 items were deemed valid following the expert judgment analysis result. The inter-rater agreement opportunity shows raters’ similarity score of 10,836, implying that experts in this study tend to give similar assessments. This research results in a 21st century skills scale for prospective school counselors with a total of 78 valid items. The purpose of this study was to develop a 21st century skills scale for prospective school counselors that had been fulfilled, the instrument had been tested for validity and reliability based on expert judgment. The current research recommends that further research be carried out to develop a 21st century skills scale instrument for prospective educators in other scientific fields

    The impact of TED Talk videos on students’ presentation performance

    This study investigated the impact of Technology, Entertainment, and Design (TED) Talk videos on students’ presentation performance within the higher education context. Employing a quantitative approach, the study involved 14 first-year students enrolled in a “bachelor in English language” program at “Fan S. Noli” University, Korça, Albania. The research, conducted during the academic year 2022-2023 in “text analysis 1 and 2” modules, explores how the sequential exposure to TED Talk videos influences students’ presentation skills. After watching the initial TED Talk video, students prepared and delivered one presentation, assessed using a rubric. Subsequently, students viewed 10 more TED Talk videos, with two presentations following these viewings. The study’s analysis was facilitated using the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version 20 software program. The Friedman and the Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to determine whether there are statistically significant differences among the groups in the repeated-measure design. The findings demonstrate that TED Talk videos play a significant role in enhancing students’ presentation skills. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on multimedia-enhanced pedagogy and the efficacy of integrating TED Talk as an educational resource, with SPSS version 20 aiding in the quantitative analysis of the obtained data
