Thalidomide - a chance for use in modern disease treatment?
Thalidomide, despite its controversial history associated with teratogenic effects is currently used in the treatment of various conditions including oncological, immunological and dermatological diseases. The drug exhibits anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and anti-angiogenic effects, making it potentially effective in the treatment of various diseases. The mechanism of action is based on modulating the CRL4CRBN E3 ubiquitin ligase complex by binding to cereblon (CRBN), which leads to a change in the substrates recognized by this complex and the degradation of specific proteins. Thalidomide is used in the treatment of multiple myeloma, especially in cases resistant to other treatment methods. In addition, it can support the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme due to its anti-angiogenic and immunomodulatory effects. It is also used in the treatment of Crohn's disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). In Crohn's disease it works by blocking TNF-α and modulating the immune response. In cutaneous lupus erythematosus it reduces inflammation, modulates the immune response and inhibits angiogenesis. In IPF, it inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduces oxidative stress. The use of thalidomide is associated with a risk of teratogenicity, which requires strict control and the use of effective methods of contraception. In addition thalidomide can cause side effects, mainly hematological and gastrointestinal disorders. Due to the side effect profile, the use of thalidomide requires caution and close monitoring of the patient by a physician
Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia: case report of uncommon genetic defect in young adult
Fibrous dysplasia is uncommon genetic defect in which normal bone and marrow are replaced with fibro-osseous tissue, leading to bone deformities, pain fractures and functional impairments. The case presents 27 years old women that was diagnosed with sepsis in the course of catheter-related infection and treated at nephrology department. She was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease that started during pregnancy and originated due to steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome. During the hospitalization, a CT scan of the head was performed because of facial deformation. Based on CT scans of head, craniofacial fibrous dysplasia was confirmed
Polish pupils from the Alpha generation and their lifestyle
The present study explores the emerging interest in the phenomenon of the Alpha generation, a subject on which there is a paucity of both theoretical and empirical works. To date, there has been no organised attempt to synthesise the extant knowledge on the lifestyles of today’s youngest generation of students from different countries worldwide. The present paper thus aims to address this knowledge gap by presenting a concise overview of the lifestyles of Polish students of the Alpha generation. The paper addresses the main factors shaping health in this age group by referring to diet and eating habits, mental health, physical activity, and sleeping, with particular attention given to problems resulting from excessive use of digital media and minimising physical activity. It was concluded that, in Polish schools, for the sustainable development of students of the Alpha generation, there is a need to introduce health education and close intersectoral cooperation
Patient satisfaction and quality of life after septoplasty in adults: literature review
Background: Septoplasty is a common surgical procedure designed to correct a deviated nasal septum and relieve symptoms of nasal obstruction. While the primary goal of the surgery is to improve nasal airflow, patient satisfaction and quality of life (QoL) have become important measures of surgical success. Understanding the impact of septoplasty on QoL is essential to optimise patients’ outcomes and refine treatment approaches. Despite its widespread use, number of high-quality studies have been limited. However, in recent years there have been a growing interest in assessing its effectiveness using objective and patient-reported outcomes.
Objective: The aim of this literature review is to analyse the effectiveness of septoplasty, including the impact of septoplasty on patient satisfaction and quality of life, and to assess predictors of surgical success.
State of knowledge: Septoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a deviated nasal septum to improve nasal airflow and relieve obstruction. Recent studies show, that septoplasty leads to significant improvement in nasal breathing, sleep quality, daily functioning, mental state and olfactory function. Psychological factors, preoperative expectations and degree of nasal deviation have been identified as key determinants of surgical outcome.
Conclusion: Septoplasty is an effective procedure that leads to significant improvements in quality of life and general satisfaction from surgery. Several factors have been identified that influence surgical outcome including patient mental state, patient expectation, severity of septal deviation and surgical technique. To optimise results, surgeons should focus on refining surgical techniques, patient selection and management of patients’ expectations
The Impact of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors on Fertility Preservation and Pregnancy Outcomes
Immune checkpoint inhibitors have revolutionized cancer treatment by enhancing anti-tumor immune responses. However, their impact on fertility is an emerging concern, particularly among young patients, including children. This review aims to assess the effects of immune checkpoint inhibitors on reproductive health and fertility preservation strategies. Immune checkpoint inhibitors may cause endocrine-related adverse effects, such as hypophysitis, thyroid dysfunction, and adrenal insufficiency, which can disrupt gonadal function. In women, these therapies may reduce ovarian reserve, impair ovulation, and cause menstrual irregularities. In men, they may contribute to testosterone deficiency and reduced sperm production. Given that immune checkpoint inhibitors are used even in pediatric oncology, early fertility counseling and preservation strategies, such as oocyte and sperm cryopreservation, should be discussed before treatment. Additionally, recent evidence suggests that physical activity may have a protective effect on reproductive health in patients receiving these therapies by regulating hormonal balance and reducing inflammation. Immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy may contribute to pregnancy-related disorders, with reported adverse effects including miscarriage and preterm birth, however some studies document successful pregnancies in women exposed to this treatment. As immune checkpoint inhibitors continue to be widely used, further research is needed to clarify their long-term effects on reproductive health and optimize fertility preservation strategies for affected patients

Quality of life evaluation in patients with locally advanced breast cancer (luminal type B) depending on routes of polychemotherapy administration
Article outlines that patients’ with locally advanced breast cancer quality of life is significantly correlated with the chemotherapy method and the level of tumour proliferative activity (Ki-67 index). Patients who received selective intraarterial polychemotherapy had higher quality of life indexes at all stages of treatment, especially with a high level of Ki-67. This is probably due to a faster clinical effect, reduction of tumour size and early achievement of resectability. In contrast, in the group with systemic polychemotherapy with high Ki-67, manifestations of general intoxication, lack of subjective improvement in the early stages of treatment and, accordingly, lower quality of life assessments were more often recorded. Thus, combining quality of life data with tumour molecular biological characteristics (the Ki-67 level) can serve not only as a tool for treatment efficacy evaluation but also as an additional predictor for therapeutic strategy choosing which contributes to the personalization of treatment in oncology. This approach allows to improve the quality of medical care, the efficacy of doctor-patient communication and patients with locally advanced breast cancer treatment final results
Features of immune homeostasis disorders and their role in the pathogenesis of the development of adrenaline damage to the myocardium and experimental periodontitis
Aim. The aim of the study was to determine the pathophysiological features of changes in humoral and cellular immunity and their role in the mechanisms of development of experimental periodontitis (EP) associated with adrenaline myocardial injury (AMI).
Material and methods. Experimental studies were conducted on 63 white rats (males), which were divided into three groups: intact group (control), APM on the 1st, 3rd and 7th days; APM and EP on the 1st, 3rd and 7th days.
Experimental periodontitis (EP) was reproduced by the method of Demkovich A.E., APM was reproduced by the method of Markova O.O. The content of T and B lymphocytes in the blood was determined by the method of Chernushenko K.F., CIC - by the method of Haskova V. Statistical analysis of digital results was performed by the Student method.
Results. The results of the studies showed that under the conditions of APM development, there was a decrease in the level of T-lymphocytes and an increase in B-lymphocytes with a predominance on the 1st day of the experiment compared to the control, and under the conditions of comorbid pathology (APM and EP), suppression of cellular immunity was observed against the background of stimulation of humoral immunity with dominance on the 3rd and 7th days, which indicated significant violations of immune homeostasis indicators and their important role in the pathogenesis of the development of the indicated experimental disease models
Ryzykowne zachowania seksualne młodzieży niedostosowanej społecznie przebywającej w młodzieżowych ośrodkach wychowawczych i ich wiedza na temat chorób przenoszonych drogą płciową
The aim of the study was to examine the tendency to engage in risky sexual behaviour among socially maladjusted youth staying in youth care centres, and to examine their knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases. Boys and girls were examined by conducting a comparative analysis regarding their sexual experiences, sexual tendencies and behaviours, and knowledge of various sexually transmitted diseases, as well as the possible behaviour of young people in the event of becoming infected with sexually transmitted diseases and engaging in sexual activity, exposing their partners to infection with sexually transmitted diseases. The youth in educational centres have the same sexual needs as those outside the centres. However, it is important to note that before being placed in a rehabilitation facility, these individuals often exhibited dysfunctional behaviour in various aspects of life, including sexual behaviour, which may have led to engaging in risky sexual activities prior to being placed in the facility. These risky behaviours may continue during their stay in the facility with partners available within the centre, as well as outside the centre during school holidays and public holidays. This is a critical area of public health research, especially since the sexuality of socially maladjusted youth remains an understudied topic in scientific discourse, and the extent of risky sexual behaviours within this group is not sufficiently scientifically understood.
