Economic growth, environmental sustainability, and human needs: A firm-level analysis
We examine how renewable energy adoption (REA) and social welfare (SW) initiatives shape corporate profitability in Saudi Arabia, a critical test case for resource-dependent economies undergoing sustainability transitions under Vision 2030. Employing a dynamic panel Generalized Method of Moments model and quartile regression on 48 firms (2010–2024), the analysis dissects heterogeneous effects across low-, mid-, and high-profitability tiers. Results reveal that RE adoption drives profitability most for high-profit firms, leveraging scalable infrastructure and innovation, while SW initiatives like job creation and training disproportionately benefit low-profit firms by stabilizing operations. Mid-profit firms uniquely capitalize on RE-SW synergies, balancing green innovation with workforce development. These findings challenge narratives of sustainability as a profitability trade-off, aligning with the Porter Hypothesis and Stakeholder Theory. Policy implications advocate for tiered strategies: RE incentives for high-profit firms, training subsidies for low-profit firms, and synergy-focused industrial zones for mid-profit firms. By tailoring interventions to financial contexts, Saudi Arabia can harmonize Vision 2030’s sustainability goals with equitable growth, offering a model for resource-rich economies navigating green transitions
Ethnomedicinal knowledge and novel folk claims from Sunderbani Block, Rajouri District, Jammu & Kashmir, India
Medicinal plants have been essential to indigenous practices since ancient times. The Sunderbani region in Jammu and Kashmir (India) hosts a wealth of medicinal plants and traditional wisdom. However, these resources have faced threats due to socio-cultural changes, urbanization, and economic development, highlighting the need for conservation measures. Therefore, this study focuses on documenting the ethnobotanical knowledge of the study area. With prior consent, interviews and group discussions were conducted with traditional healers and locals to collect the data. The collected data were analysed using various quantitative indices. The study identified 66 plant taxa used to treat 12 ailment categories. Herbs constituted 45.45% of the plants, with leaves being the most frequently use plant part (40.5%). Asteraceae emerged as the dominant family. The majority of raw drugs were prepared as powders (32.5%). Prominent plants based on use report (UR) and use value (UV) included Terminalia bellirica (UR 51, UV 0.055), Phyllanthus emblica (UR 48, UV 0.052), Terminalia chebula (UR 47, UV 0.051), and Grewia optiva (UR 46, UV 0.050). Diseases of the circulatory system (ICD code 11) had the highest Informant Consensus Factor (ICF 0.97), while respiratory diseases (ICD code 12) had the lowest (ICF 0.15). Families like Phyllanthaceae (FUV 0.052) and Combretaceae (FUV 0.048) were highly cited. Many folk claims were novel and documented for the first time. The Sunderbani region is a repository of unique medicinal plants and traditional knowledge. Exploring the novel plant uses could serve as a lead for pharmacological research and future drug development while emphasizing the need for conservation efforts
The need for long-term ecological research in subterranean environments
Subterranean habitats, those found beneath the surface of nonmarine environments such as caves, aquifers, and other underground voids, are more widespread and ecologically significant than often assumed. These environments are functionally linked to the adjacent surface ecosystems, sharing hydrological, geochemical, and biological connections. Despite their global distribution and ecological importance, subterranean habitats remain among the least-explored and least-understood ecosystems. However, the scientific neglect of these environments is not limited to species inventories or basic ecological descriptions. This note highlights the near-complete absence of long-term ecological research (LTER) conducted on subterranean ecosystems. While LTER programmes are increasingly recognized as essential for understanding ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity trends, and the impacts of environmental change in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems, this kind of study appears to be extremely rare in subterranean environments. The lack of reference long-term studies hinders our ability to detect and interpret temporal changes in community composition, species interactions, and evolutionary processes within these unique environments. Nevertheless, there are compelling scientific reasons to promote the development of long-term ecological research in subterranean ecosystems. In fact, these simplified and relatively buffered habitats offer unique opportunities to study community interactions and adaptations under relatively stable climatic conditions. Furthermore, subterranean environments may serve as natural laboratories for investigating evolutionary processes such as ecological adaptation, morphological convergence, speciation and gene flow, especially when compared to the more variable surface environments with which they are functionally linked
Assessing climate change-induced food security risks for rural communities in South Punjab, Pakistan
This study examined the impact of climatic variability on food security in rural communities across three key districts in South Punjab, Pakistan. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques to map food security zones and socioeconomic data to compute a food security index. Primary data were collected from 399 respondents through a field survey using a disproportionate stratified random sampling technique in selected union councils of Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Rajanpur districts. Climate data from 1991 to 2021 were analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. Advanced statistical methods, including categorical principal component analysis, global Moran’s I, and Anselin local Moran’s I, were utilized to identify spatial clusters of food security. The analysis revealed regional disparities: Bahawalpur demonstrated high food security, Rajanpur exhibited severe food insecurity, and Rahim Yar Khan showed mixed results. The study found that expanding agricultural crop areas improved food availability, although climatic factors had a complex impact on the yields. Higher temperatures decreased wheat production in Rajanpur but enhanced yields in Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan. Non-linear Principal Component Analysis identified key factors, such as livelihoods, asset accessibility, and desertification, which explained 46% of the variation in food security. These results underscore the need for adaptive strategies, including the use of advanced technologies and improved irrigation, to mitigate the effects of climate change and support agriculture in South Punjab
Rola opłat publicznych w kształtowaniu polityki ekologicznej w Polsce– na przykładzie opłaty produktowej
One of the biggest challenges facing governments today is environmental issues. Governments are increasingly resorting to various fiscal instruments, such as charges, to influence the behaviour of firms and consumers. The aim of this article is to analyse how the product fee in Poland affects environmental policy and whether it effectively achieves its objectives. The article is based on an analysis of legal acts, reports from national institutions and available statistical data on the impact of product charges. The analysis shows that environmental charges can be effective in increasing the level of recycling and reducing the amount of non-recyclable waste, if they are properly structured and controlled. The results indicate that the product charge in Poland needs some adjustment to the economic realities and the call for an increase in the rates of the product charge seems justified.

Religious, Social and National Goals of the Istrian Bishop Juraj Dobrila
The article explores the key influences on the activities of Juraj Dobrila (1812–82), a bishop who played a pivotal role in the national integration of Istrian Croats. Istria, a peninsula situated in the northern Adriatic Sea, had been a meeting point between Croatian, Slovenian, and Italian populations. In the nineteenth century, the Italian bourgeoisie dominated the area. The article highlights Bishop Dobrila’s attitudes and efforts, characterised by the convergence of religious, social, and national aspirations. It also examines his achieved results and his complex relationships with both ecclesiastical and secular authorities. Despite enjoying the trust of the Holy See and the Habsburg authorities, Bishop Dobrila was unable to secure their full support for his primary goal – the establishment of a boys’ seminary (lat. seminarium puerorum) in central Istria. The bishop relied on his own resources and local collaborators to improve the challenging conditions faced by the rural population, predominantly Istrian Croats, in the early stages of national integration. By investing significant efforts and resources, Bishop Dobrila aimed to promote education and literacy. His initiatives laid down a solid foundation for organised political and national mobilisation among Istrian Croats, which continued to grow after his death
Lawyers of Polish Origin in Cieszyn Silesia: Identity-Related Dilemmas within a Multiethnic Monarchy
Common denominators for the community of lawyers of Polish origin practising in Cieszyn Silesia in the nineteenth century included the same legislation of the Habsburg Monarchy, the organisational structure of its judiciary, the legal framework governing their professions and the qualifications required for legal practice. However, the group was marked by disparities concerning social background, economic circumstances, career trajectories, immediate community, the desire to embrace a specific culture, and national affiliation. Lawyers resided and practised within a region incorporated into a larger spatial unit, i.e. Austria-Hungary, and, therefore, were shaped by geographical, political, social and economic interdependencies. The overlapping ties between regional, national and state levels might compel lawyers to show a relative preference for dual identity, considering that their ethnic affiliation did not rule out a sense of emotional and political loyalty to the state. Lawyers’ complex identities enabled simultaneous relationality and development across the levels of nation, region, country, and empire. The hypothesis that they experienced a dilemma over their identity, ambiguity regarding their national affiliation, or inner tension between their Polish patriotism and their Habsburg loyalty has not been substantiated. An analysis of available sources concerning a segment of lawyers from Polish-speaking family backgrounds suggests their tendency towards clearly defined national affiliation. However, this identification did not necessarily represent a continuation of their ethnic heritage. The available ego-documents indicate that this awareness typically crystallised during their school (gymnasium) and university years – a period in which communal influences and cultural or political factors shaped their choices in favour of pro-Polish, pro-Slavic, pro-Silesian, or pro-German options. This crystallisation of national affiliation did not compromise lawyers’ access to protection by state authorities, their right to equal treatment under the law, and their cooperation across social classes, institutional frameworks, professional spheres and religious denominations. Conflicts and potential interethnic barriers emerged when nationalisms gained prominence. Therefore, what is noticeable is the assimilation into the empire and integration with an intentionally chosen nation, including a deep self-declared commitment to their ‘own’ community
