Gdańsk wojenny i powojenny we wspomnieniach włoskiego oficera lekarza Piera Redaellego (1944–1945)
Full text linkThis text presents a fragment of the memoirs of the Italian officer of the Second World War, Piero Redaelli (1915–1997), a doctor-surgeon (veteran of many fronts: in France, Balkans and in the Soviet Union), whose surrender of the Italian army (September 1943) led to Gdańsk in 1944. There, as an interned Italian soldier, for several months – until March 1945 – he worked as a doctor in the structure of a German POW camp (Stalag XX B/Z). In his memoirs he describes the living and working conditions, mainly of Italian prisoners of war, city under siege and fighting; eventually also the entry of the Red Army. The Italian surgeon left Gdańsk in the early autumn of 1945, and was still involved in the opening of the General City Hospital (Medical Academy in Gdańsk, today: Medical University of Gdańsk).Poniższy tekst przedstawia fragment wspomnień włoskiego oficera okresu II wojny światowej Piera Redaellego (1915–1997), lekarza-chirurga (weterana wielu frontów, m.in. we Francji, na Bałkanach i w Związku Sowieckim), którego kapitulacja armii włoskiej (wrzesień 1943) zaprowadziła w 1944 r. do Gdańska. Tam jako internowany włoski żołnierz przez kilka miesięcy – do marca 1945 r. – pracował jako lekarz w strukturze niemieckiego obozu jenieckiego (Stalag XX B/Z). W swoich wspomnieniach opisuje warunki życia i pracy, głównie włoskich jeńców, miasto w trakcie oblężenia i walk, w końcu również wkroczenie Armii Czerwonej. Włoski chirurg opuścił Gdańsk wczesną jesienią 1945 r., angażując się jeszcze w uruchomienie Szpitala Miejskiego Ogólnego (Akademii Lekarskiej w Gdańskiej, dziś Gdański Uniwersytet Medyczny)
Organizacja Kriegshilfe für Danzig – przyczynek do dziejów Gdańska w latach I wojny światowej
Full text linkThe War Assistance for Gdańsk (Kriegshilfe für Danzig) was established on 12 August 1914. The creation of the organisation was initiated by High Mayor Heinrich Scholtz, who also became its chairman. It was tasked with helping the families of soldiers fighting on the frontlines. The assistance included providing food, clothing, shoes, or coal for the winter. The organisation also helped to find jobs, ran free soup kitchens as well as nurseries and group homes for soldiers’ children, provided care for wounded soldiers in military hospitals and for refugees from East Prussia. Special care was provided for pregnant women and those with infants. In 1915–1918 the anniversaries of the beginning of the war were commemorated in Gdańsk with a Day of Generosity (Opfertag) during which the populace could support the organisation through fundraisers. As the availability of foodstuffs in the city deteriorated in subsequent years, War Assistance operated in increasingly difficult conditions. Some committees ceased their activities before the war ended.Organizacja Pomoc Wojenna dla Gdańska (Kriegshilfe für Danzig) powstała 12 sierpnia 1914 r. z inicjatywy nadburmistrza miasta Heinricha Scholtza, który został jednocześnie jej przewodniczącym. Jej zadaniem była pomoc rodzinom żołnierzy walczących na froncie. Polegała ona m.in. na wydawaniu żywności, odzieży, butów, węgla na zimę. Organizacja pomagała w znalezieniu pracy, prowadziła jadłodajnie wydające bezpłatną zupę, opiekowała się rannymi żołnierzami w lazaretach wojskowych, udzielała pomocy uchodźcom z Prus Wschodnich, prowadziła żłobki i ochronki dla dzieci żołnierzy. Specjalną opieką zostały otoczone kobiety oczekujące dziecka bądź zajmujące się niemowlętami. W okresie 1915–1918, z okazji kolejnych rocznic wybuchu wojny, organizowano w Gdańsku tzw. Dzień Ofiarności (Opfertag), podczas którego mieszkańcy mogli wspomóc organizację w trakcie zbiórek dobroczynnych. Wobec pogarszającej się sytuacji aprowizacyjnej miasta w kolejnych latach Pomoc Wojenna działała w coraz trudniejszych warunkach. Aktywność niektórych komisji wygasła jeszcze przed zakończeniem wojny

Full text linkThe article presents the history of Piarist settlement in the village of Wysoka (now part of the Osowa district in Gdańsk) in 1921, where the order intended to build a boarding school, a novitiate with a church. After the end of World War II, the Piarists returned to their estate to implement their pre-war plans. Due to the lack of priests in the Chełmno diocese, the Piarists were tasked with administering the parish in Chwaszczyno, where they worked until 1949. From 1946, they also worked in the Góra parish near Wejherowo and a nearby post-Protestant church in Bolszewo was entrusted to them, next to which a new parish was erected in 1950.Artykuł przedstawia historię osiedlenia się pijarów we wsi Wysoka (obecnie część dzielnicy Osowa w Gdańsku) w 1921 r., gdzie zakon zamierzał wybudować szkołę, konwikt i nowicjat wraz z kościołem. Po zakończeniu II wojny światowej pijarzy wrócili, aby w swojej posiadłości zrealizować przedwojenne plany. W związku z brakiem księży w diecezji chełmińskiej pijarzy otrzymali zadanie administrowania parafii w Chwaszczynie, w której przebywali do 1949 r. Od 1946 r. pracowali również w parafii Góra nieopodal Wejherowa oraz w powierzonym im pobliskim kościele poprotestanckim w Bolszewie, przy którym w 1950 r. erygowano nową parafię

Full text linkThe first volume of the travelogue of Karl Hahn, a German teacher and educationist, published in Leipzig in 1812, has not attracted the attention of scholars researching the history of Pomerania. Hahn, recalling the circumstances and route of his escape from Berlin ahead of the French army in 1806, devoted much space to amberworking, criticised at length certain plebeian attributes of the burghers of Gdańsk, and wrote lengthy passages about the Kashubian peasantry whom he likely encountered between Słupsk and Wejherowo. Hahn describes Kashubian clothing in detail, focusing especially on clothes worn by girls and women; he also compares Kashubian clothing to that of peasantry in other German states. The present contribution of source material quotes Hahn’s description and considers the sources of his knowledge as well as the importance of his testimony to the overall knowledge about early-1800s Kashubians.Opublikowany w Lipsku w 1812 r. pierwszy tom pamiętnika podróży Karla Hahna, niemieckiego nauczyciela i uczonego pedagoga, dotychczas nie wzbudził zainteresowania badaczy dziejów Pomorza. Hahn, wspominając w nim okoliczności oraz trasę ucieczki z Berlina przed wojskami francuskimi w 1806 r., obszernie pisał na temat obróbki bursztynu, negatywnie rozwodził się o pewnych cechach plebejskich mieszkańców Gdańska, a spory ustęp poświęcił chłopskiej ludności kaszubskiej, z którą – jak można mniemać – zetknął się na trasie pomiędzy Słupskiem a Wejherowem. Hahn przedstawił z detalami ubiór kaszubski, szczególnie skupiając się na charakterystyce strojów noszonych przez dziewczęta i kobiety; ich odzienie porównywał także z ubiorami chłopów w innych krajach niemieckich. W niniejszym przyczynku źródłowym przytoczona została treść tego opisu, a poprzedziły ją uwagi dotyczące zarówno źródeł informacji Hahna, jak i znaczenia jego świadectwa dla wiedzy o Kaszubach z początku XIX w
Accounting Controls and Quality of Financial Reporting
Full text linkThis research objective of the study is to examine the impacts of accounting controls on the quality of financial reporting within microfinance banks (MFBs) located in Kwara State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey methodology was utilized in this research, involving a total of 216 stakeholders from all 27 licensed MFBs. The study drew upon primary data obtained from a selected group of 140 stakeholders within the MFB industry in Kwara State, Nigeria, utilizing random and stratified sampling methods. The data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics employing the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling technique. The results of the study reveal that both detective and corrective controls have a significant positive effect on the financial reporting quality of MFBs in the area, while preventive controls do not exhibit a significant impact on financial reporting quality at a 5% level of significance. This study concludes that accounting controls, particularly corrective and detective controls, play a crucial role in enhancing the quality and reliability of financial reporting in microfinance banks, while the impact of preventive controls remains less significant, with insights into the implications of these findings and offers recommendations for improving financial reporting practices in MFBs. Microfinance institutions should continue to invest in robust corrective and detective controls to enhance their ability to detect and rectify errors and fraudulent activities in financial reporting processes. This investment should include regular reconciliation procedures, comprehensive audits, and the use of advanced fraud detection techniques
Patron 2023 roku i Dnia Nauki Polskiej. Parlamentarne upamiętnienie Mikołaja Kopernika
No full textIn 2020, Polish parliamentarians adopted the act establishing the Polish Science Day. Two years later, in 2022, the Senate of the Republic of Poland appointed the outstanding astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus as the patron of 2023. This indicates that the Parliament of the Republic of Poland has certain functions and powers in the Polish legal order. The legislative function, i.e. the adoption of laws and resolutions, allows determining the basic directions of the state's activity. The creative function consists in the direct appointment and dismissal of constitutional bodies of the state and persons who are members of these bodies. The third function boils down to controlling the actions of the executive. Bearing in mind these commonly known facts, the authors of the article decided to draw attention to the important, in their opinion, although not formally defined, but important shaping and educational function. It finds expression in many departments of deputies and senators. With regard to the commemoration of important figures, events and ideas in the history of the Polish nation and state, in a special way, in annual awards made on occasion by way of resolutions. In accordance with these resolutions, the patron of a given year is established. In 2023, next to a dozen other outstanding figures, it is Nicolaus Copernicus. Presentation of the circumstances of the adoption of this resolution, i.e. the legislative process, and a synthetic philological and statistical analysis of the Sejm and Senate resolutions adopted in the 21st century is the purpose of our article.Polscy parlamentarzyści w 2020 roku przyjęli ustawę o ustanowieniu Dnia Nauki Polskiej. Dwa lata później, w 2022 roku, Senat RP patronem 2023 ustanowił wybitnego astronoma Mikołaja Kopernika. Wskazuje to, że Parlament Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej ma w polskim porządku prawnym określone funkcje i uprawnienia. Funkcja ustawodawcza, a więc uchwalanie ustaw i uchwał, pozwala na określanie podstawowych kierunków działalności państwa. Funkcja kreacyjna polega na bezpośrednim powoływaniu i odwoływaniu organów konstytucyjnych państwa oraz osób, które wchodzą w skład tych organów. Trzecia z funkcji sprowadza się do kontroli działań władzy wykonawczej. Mając na względzie te powszechnie znane fakty, autorzy artykułu postanowili zwrócić uwagę, na istotną ich zdaniem ich, choć formalnie nie określoną, to jednak ważną funkcję kształtująco-wychowawczą. Znajduje ona wyraz w wielu działach posłów i senatorów. W odniesieniu do upamiętniania ważnych w dziejach narodu i państwa polskiego postaci, wydarzeń i idei, w sposób szczególny, w corocznych wyróżnieniach podejmowanych okolicznościowo w drodze uchwał. Zgodnie z tymi uchwałami ustanawiany jest patron danego roku. W 2023, obok kilkunastu innych wybitnych postaci, jest nim Mikołaj Kopernik. Przedstawienie okoliczności przyjęcia tej uchwały, tj. procesu legislacyjnego oraz syntetyczna analiza filologiczna i statystyczna podjętych w XXI wieku uchwał sejmowych i senackich stanowi cel naszego artykułu

Full text linkThe article discusses the core tenets and propositions of selected scientific literature regarding the life and work of Nicolaus Copernicus published in Poland in 2023. This year was declared the Year of Copernicus in relation to the 550th anniversary of the astronomer’s birth. The proposed review is thematically linked to the scientific events taking place during this year’s World Copernican Congress. The text includes reflections on the current state of Copernican studies and further possibilities for their development.Artykuł omawia najważniejsze założenia i tezy wybranej literatury naukowej dotyczącej postaci i działalności Mikołaja Kopernika wydanej w Polsce w 2023 r. Rok ten ogłoszono Rokiem Kopernika w związku z 550. rocznicą urodzin astronoma. Zaproponowany przegląd odnosi się tematycznie do wydarzeń naukowych odbywających się podczas tegorocznego Światowego Kongresu Kopernikańskiego. Big Five personality dimensions in ultramarathon runners: findings of the Ultrarunners Longitudinal TRAcking (ULTRA) Study
Full text linkThe psychological aspect of ultrarunning is of interest in sports medicine. Ultrarunners are described as mentally tough, and have been shown in studies to be goal oriented, and intrinsically motivated. It is unknown how the personality traits of this group compare to the general population. 734 ultramarathon runners participated in this large longitudinal study. Ultramarathon runners scored significantly lower in extroversion (3.74 vs 4.44, p<.0001), and agreeableness (5.10 vs 5.23, p=.0099) compared to a control population. They scored higher in conscientiousness (5.93 vs 5.4, p<.0001), and emotional stability (5.28 vs 4.83, p<.0001), while statistically similar in openness to experiences (5.33 vs 5.38, p=0.4174). The current study dimensions of relatively low agreeableness (competitive), and extroversion (able to stay within oneself), combined with relatively high conscientiousness (organized, goal-directed), and emotional stability (stable in stressful circumstance), quantify the differences between a large ultramarathon runner population and a control group
Reconstruction of the anterior abdominal wall using a myocutaneous flap from the tensor fasciae latae muscle in a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the skin
Full text linkThe present study reports the case of a 59-year-old female patient admitted to the department due to advanced skin cancer in the lower abdominal region extending to the peritoneum. The patient was qualified for tumor resection with simultaneous reconstruction using flap surgery techniques, employing a tensor fasciae latae muscle flap. The intervention involved wide tumor resection aimed at maximizing the likelihood of achieving oncological radicality. Reconstruction was carried out using a propeller flap from the tensor fasciae latae muscle and a rotational musculocutaneous flap based on the external oblique muscle. The procedure concluded with a skin graft from the thigh, which covered the remaining tissue defect after flap harvesting. The described reconstruction technique was carefully planned, considering the defect's characteristics and the patient’s condition, highlighting the importance of individualized approaches in plastic surgery. This case illustrates the complexity of surgical procedures in cancer patients and the significance of avoiding foreign materials in the context of chronic infections
