Two Approaches to Cognitive Evaluation: Assessing the Strengths and Limitations of GPCOG and ACE-III
IntroductionThe growing elderly population underscores age as a key risk factor for cognitive disorders like dementia. Reliable assessment tools are essential. Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination-III (ACE-III) and General Practitioner Assessment of Cognition (GPCOG) are two extensively utilized tools for cognitive assessment. This study compares their sensitivity, specificity, and clinical utility across healthcare settings.
Purpose of ResearchThe study evaluates ACE-III and GPCOG for diagnosing dementia such as Alzheimer’s and frontotemporal dementia, focusing on their application in primary care and specialized settings.
Materials and MethodsThis study reviewed 37 publications, including clinical trials and validation studies. Systematic searches in PubMed, NCBI, and Google Scholar used keywords such as “GPCOG,” “ACE-III,” “cognitive screening,” and “dementia.”
ResultsACE-III demonstrates high accuracy (sensitivity and specificity >93% and 96%) and excels in diagnosing complex dementia. However, its time requirements and need for trained personnel limit its use in resource-limited settings. GPCOG is quick and user-friendly, ideal for primary care but less effective for detailed diagnostics due to its brevity.
ConclusionsACE-III is optimal for detailed evaluations in specialized settings, while GPCOG is suited for rapid screening in primary care. Combined, they enhance early detection and management of cognitive disorders
The Application of Point-of-Care Ultrasound in Sports Medicine: A Narrative Review
Background
Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is increasingly used in sports medicine due to its portability, real-time imaging capabilities, and ability to guide clinical decision-making. As a dynamic, cost-effective, and non-invasive tool, POCUS has been incorporated into the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal injuries among athletes.
Objective
This review evaluates the applications of POCUS in sports medicine, including its role in diagnosing soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, monitoring recovery, and guiding therapeutic interventions.
Results
POCUS is highly valuable for the rapid assessment of muscle, tendon, ligament, and joint injuries. It provides real-time visualization of dynamic structures, assisting in immediate decision-making and treatment planning. Compared to traditional imaging modalities such as X-ray and MRI, POCUS offers advantages in accessibility, cost, and repeatability.
Conclusion
POCUS is a crucial imaging tool in sports medicine, enabling rapid injury assessment and aiding in return-to-play decisions. However, further research is required to standardize protocols, improve operator training, and optimize its integration into clinical practice
Testosterone therapy for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in women
Introduction and Purpose: Testosterone plays a pivotal role in women’s sexual health, influencing sexual desire, arousal, and satisfaction. This hormone, primarily produced in the ovaries, adrenal glands, and adipose tissue, declines with age, especially during menopause, leading to sexual dysfunction such as hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). The purpose of this article is to review the role of testosterone in female sexual function, evaluate the efficacy and safety of testosterone therapy (TRT) for women with HSDD, and discuss the ongoing challenges in its use.
Materials and Methods:The article is a comprehensive review of current literature, including clinical studies and trials involving testosterone therapy in women with low libido, especially in postmenopausal women. It highlights the various forms of testosterone supplementation, such as transdermal patches and topical gels, as well as monitoring recommendations for assessing testosterone levels and side effects during treatment.
Results: Testosterone therapy has shown promising results in improving sexual desire, arousal, and satisfaction in women, particularly those postmenopausal or following surgical castration. While the therapy is generally well-tolerated, common side effects include acne, hirsutism, and voice deepening. The optimal dosing regimen and long-term safety, especially in premenopausal women, remain unclear, with ongoing studies indicating positive short-term outcomes. Clinical guidelines recommend individualized treatment.
Conclusion:Testosterone replacement therapy is a viable option for women with HSDD, particularly in those with diminished testosterone levels due to menopause or surgical intervention. While promising, careful management is essential to mitigate side effects and ensure patient safety. Continued research is necessary to establish standardized treatment protocols and to further assess the long-term effects of testosterone therapy on women’s sexual health
Physical Exercise as a Therapeutic Strategy in Alzheimer’s Disease: Mechanisms and Benefits
Introduction and Purpose
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with no definitive cure. This article explores the impact of physical exercise on AD risk reduction and disease progression, emphasizing its molecular, cognitive, and physiological benefits.
Materials and Methods
A comprehensive review of recent studies, meta-analyses, and clinical trials was conducted to evaluate the effects of various exercise modalities on AD-related pathophysiology, cognitive decline, and neuroprotection.
Results
Findings indicate that regular physical activity is associated with a 33% lower risk of developing AD. Exercise interventions lasting over 16 weeks significantly improve cognitive function, as measured by MMSE and ADL scores. Mechanistically, exercise enhances BDNF levels, promotes Aβ clearance, reduces tau pathology, mitigates neuroinflammation, and improves cerebrovascular health.
Conclusion
Physical exercise is a cost-effective, non-invasive intervention for AD prevention and management. Future research should focus on optimizing individualized exercise protocols and leveraging digital health technologies for long-term adherence and effectiveness
The Impact of Lifestyle and External Factors on Male Fertility
Introduction:
In today's world, where expectations for professional success are constantly increasing, modern men are particularly vulnerable to prolonged stress and its negative health consequences.
Numerous everyday factors, often overlooked, such as diet, physical activity, and proper recovery, can significantly impact male reproductive capabilities. It is estimated that fertility issues affect approximately 15% of couples worldwide, with male-related factors accounting for about half of these cases. This is a concern that cannot be ignored.
This study aims to analyze the influence of lifestyle and various environmental factors on male fertility.
Research Objective: The primary aim of this literature review is to evaluate the impact of lifestyle and broadly understood external factors on sperm quality and male fertility in light of the latest scientific research.
Materials and Methods: This article is a literature analysis based on publications from the PubMed database between 2014 and 2024, using the following keywords: "stimulants", "male fertility", "physical activity", and "diet."
Conclusions: To achieve optimal reproductive function, men should maintain a healthy and balanced diet inspired by the Mediterranean model, along with physical activity tailored to their individual needs. Further research on male fertility is necessary, as current findings do not yet allow for definitive conclusions.
Childhood Obesity - Risk Factors and Consequences of the Disease
Introduction: In recent years, there has been a global increase in the prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents. Researchers around the world are making efforts to better understand the mechanisms behind childhood obesity, to predict and prevent its consequences.
The purpose of this paper: to present the latest reports on the risk factors and consequences of obesity in the minor population.
Materials and methods: To search for relevant articles, the PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched using terms such as: ‘childhood obesity‘, ‘adolescent adiposity’, childhood obesity risk factors’, ‘childhood obesity implications’.
Summary of current knowledge: A number of risk factors for childhood obesity have been demonstrated, which can be categorized in various ways. Among the most influential are behavioral factors, related to young people's choices regarding diet or physical activity undertaken. It has been proven that excessive fat accumulation is promoted by a diet based on highly processed foods and the consumption of high-calorie meals. Studies have shown that factors independent of children’s behavior are important, such as disorders of prenatal development, the way the mother cares for her newborn, or the socioeconomic status of the child's family. Childhood obesity adversely affects the musculoskeletal and respiratory systems, causes mental illness and increases the risk of cancer in adulthood.
Conclusions: Childhood obesity is an important public health problem today due to its prevalence and numerous negative effects on the human body both in youth and adulthood. It is extremely important to thoroughly understand the risk factors of the childhood obesity and to be able to predict its consequences, which will allow to effectively combat the problem in question
Importance of Mammography in Breast Cancer Diagnosis in Poland
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy in women, being the leading cause of death in this group. In Poland, despite an increase in the incidence, there is an insufficient level of participation in screening.
Objective: To analyse the role of mammography in breast cancer diagnosis and assess its impact on mortality and early detection of cancerous lesions in Poland.
Methodology: Statistical data from Polish and international databases, such as the National Cancer Registry and GLOBOCAN, and scientific literature available on online platforms were analysed.
Results: Mammography significantly contributes to the early detection of breast cancer, which improves prognosis. In Poland, the percentage of women participating in screening programmes is 27%, one of the lowest in Europe. Planned changes from 2025 may increase the effectiveness of prevention.
Conclusions: It is necessary to increase public awareness, intensify prevention campaigns and develop modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods in order to reduce mortality and improve the quality of life of patients

Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) is a key hormone involved in cellular growth, metabolism, and aging. Its levels are influenced by various factors, including dietary protein intake. While IGF-1 plays a crucial role in muscle maintenance, tissue repair, and overall metabolic function, elevated levels have been associated with an increased risk of certain diseases, including cancer and metabolic disorders. Conversely, lower IGF-1 levels have been linked to longevity and reduced aging-related diseases. In particular, concerns have been raised about whey protein’s potential impact on acne flare-ups.[1]
Aim of the study
The primary aim of this study is to examine the relationship between dietary protein intake and Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) levels, assessing its potential implications for metabolic health and aging. This includes examining physiological mechanisms, identifying types of protein linked to acne flare-ups, and analyzing clinical studies to better understand their impact on skin health.
Materials and Methods
This review is based on a literature search conducted on PubMed. The following keywords were used: acne, protein supplementation, whey protein, and Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), plant-based products.
Conclusions
Protein supplements, particularly those containing whey protein, may contribute to acne development through hormonal mechanisms such as increased IGF-1 levels and androgen production. While not everyone will experience acne from protein supplementation, individuals with a sensitivity to dairy or those who consume excessive amounts of protein may be more likely to notice acne flare-ups.
