The Most Common Complications of Celiac Disease and the Impact of a Gluten-Free Diet on Their Course

    Get PDF
Celiac disease is a gluten-sensitive, immune-mediated enteropathy that occurs in people with a genetic predisposition and leads to inflammation in the small intestine. During its course, characteristic antibodies are produced, which together with histopathological examination of material taken from the intestine, are the main elements of the diagnostic process. Depending on the symptoms present and microscopic changes, we distinguish classical, non-classical, subclinical and potential forms. The most typical presentation, in the form of gastrointestinal symptoms includes diarrhea, abdominal pain and weight disturbances. Atypical symptom, which may involve multiple other systems, are also increasingly observed. The cornerstone of treatment is a lifelong gluten-free diet that excludes all products containing wheat, barley and rye. In most cases, it helps alleviate or resolve symptoms and regenerate the intestinal mucosa. The long diagnostic process, non-adherence to the diet and resistance to treatment pose a high risk of complications at various stages of the disease, so it is important for the patient to cooperate appropriately with the doctor and nutritionist. The purpose of this paper is to review the most common complications of celiac disease and evaluate the impact of an appropriate diet on their course.&nbsp

    Get PDF
Objective: Article’s aim is to characterize what a balneology is, what it consists of. To picture actual usage of balneotherapy in different fields of medicine; its possibilities and restrictions.   Methods: A vast literature review was conducted using PubMed database. Reviewed articles included systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, observational studies and meta-analyses.  Keywords included “balneology”, “balneotherapy”, “peloid baths”, “water baths”, “balneotherapy dermatology”, “balneotherapy rheumatology”.  Conclusions: Although balneotherapy might be considered as antiquated and according to some physicians, not scientifically proven, is efficient in reducing symptoms of some dermatological and rheumatological conditions due to its anti-inflammatory, keratolytic, antimicrobial, analgesic and myorelaxant effects. Albeit its role as complement therapy, it can achieve very good results alleviating pain and reducing amount of painkillers used, extending periods of remission or quality of live and well-being improvement. &nbsp

The relationship between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psychiatric disorder

    Get PDF
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that has a destructive effect on the joints, but also leads to many systemic complications, including mental disorders. This review will present the co-occurrence of mood disorders, such as depression, anxiety and cognitive disorders, in patients with RA and analyze the potential pathophysiological mechanisms. The impact of chronic inflammation and proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α) on the central nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) will be discussed. When rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is accompanied by mental health disorders, treatment methods used for RA may be less effective. This can make the condition harder to manage, increasing pain and reducing the quality of life. Additionally, the paper will present the impact of pain, fatigue and reduced physical fitness on the deterioration of the mental health of patients. In addition to the pharmacological treatment used for RA, which is also not neutral to patient’s health, additional therapeutic options such as psychological interventions will be discussed. Considering both somatic and psychological aspects, an interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of patients with RA is very important

    Get PDF
Introduction and Aim. The ketogenic diet (KD), rich in fats and low in carbohydrates, induces a state of ketosis and metabolic changes. Used for over a century in epilepsy treatment, it is also gaining popularity in the therapy of other conditions, including metabolic, cardiovascular, oncological, and neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of this work is to review the literature concerning its effects, applications, and potential adverse effects. Methods. A review of PubMed and Google Scholar databases from the last five years was conducted, focusing on clinical studies, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews, using keywords: "ketogenic diet", "ketogenic diet and health”, "ketogenic diet mechanisms" and “ketogenic diet adverse effects”. State of Knowledge. The KD promotes weight loss and improves glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes, and in type 1 diabetes, it may reduce insulin requirements; however, caution is necessary due to risks of hypoglycemia and ketoacidosis. The effects on lipid profiles are inconclusive. The diet can support cancer treatment by limiting glucose and insulin availability and exhibits neuroprotective effects in neurodegenerative diseases such as drug-resistant epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease. However, it may also be associated with side effects such as constipation, hypoglycemia, kidney stones, and lipid disturbances. Summary. The KD has therapeutic potential but requires monitoring, especially with long-term use, due to possible adverse effects. Further research is needed to assess its long-term efficacy and safety, particularly in the treatment of neurodegenerative and oncological diseases, to fully evaluate its therapeutic potential

    Get PDF
Introduction and purpose Gene therapy appears to be a promising treatment for patients with cardiomyopathy and innovative therapeutic option. The aim of this review is to present the latest gene therapy technologies, innovations, research in the treatment of cardiomyopathy and analysis of the ethical issues associated with the use of modern therapies. Material and methods This review is based on recent articles from the years 2020-2025 found in databases such PubMed, Elsevier. Results Gene editing through CRISPR-Cas technology allows for the modification of genetic material by making changes at precise locations what is highly useful in gene therapy. Gene Expression Regulation (RNAi) involves preventing the production of proteins by silencing a faulty gene. Antisense therapy (ASO) uses antisense oligonucleotides to exclude a particular exon and causes the translation process to stop. Gene replacement involves introducing a healthy copy of a mutated gene into the genome along with an appropriate vector. Conclusions Individual technologies in the treatment of cardiomyopathy show potential for treating patients in the future. It is also important to remember the ethical issues when using solutions based on gene therapy. Clinical trials in the future are necessary to further search for solutions for patients with cardiomyopathy

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome – A Clinical and Psychosocial Perspective

    Get PDF
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrinopathies among women of reproductive age, characterized by a complex etiology and diverse clinical presentation. The aim of this paper is to present the current state of knowledge regarding the definition, diagnostic criteria, and differential diagnosis of PCOS, as well as to discuss treatment methods—both non-pharmacological and pharmacological. Particular attention is given to psychological aspects, which are often overlooked in clinical practice, despite their significant impact on the course of the disease and the quality of life of affected women. Women with PCOS more frequently experience depressive and anxiety disorders, along with low self-esteem, which can substantially hinder effective treatment and worsen prognosis. This paper emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to PCOS patients, taking into account not only somatic symptoms but also psychological and emotional needs, as a prerequisite for effective and long-term therapy

The application of ketamine in pain management for sports injuries and other medical conditions - literature review

    Get PDF
Introduction: Ketamine is a well-established dissociative anesthetic. The discovery of its NMDA receptor antagonism revealed new potential applications in pain management. It has demonstrated promise as an analgesic for the treatment of chronic pain and has proven useful in managing acute pain, such as that resulting from sports injuries or in pediatric care settings. It is also a valuable alternative for patients who have not responded well to traditional pain medications. Materials and methods: This article reviews promising role of ketamine in pain management, especially in chronic or cancer pain, incorporating data from Google Scholar, PubMed, using keywords such as „ketamine”,„chronic pain”, „acute pain”, „pain management”.  Summary: Current evidence supports the use of subanesthetic ketamine as an effective option for acute pain management across various clinical settings, with potential to reduce opioid dependence. Its unique antidepressant properties also make it beneficial for chronic pain patients, especially those with comorbid depression. In conditions like CRPS and sickle cell disease, low-dose ketamine has shown promising results in improving pain and function. However, its effectiveness in fibromyalgia appears limited, with short-term infusions offering only temporary relief. The pediatric population may particularly benefit from ketamine’s rapid, intranasal administration, though dosing and safety must be carefully considered. While early findings are encouraging, more research is needed to establish optimal protocols and to explore its role in managing sport-related injuries.  Conclusions: Ketamine finds various applications in pain therapy and is a promising medication due to its efficacy in both chronic and acute pain management. However, further research is necessary to precisely determine the therapeutic dosage ranges, the long-term effects of its use, and the risk of addiction associated with its administration
