    Nicotine Addiction Treatment Summary

Nicotine addiction is a leading cause of preventable illness and death worldwide. This review summarizes current treatment options, focusing on both behavioral and pharmacological methods used in Poland and internationally. Effective strategies include nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), medications like cytisine, varenicline, and bupropion, as well as structured psychotherapy. Combining medical and psychological approaches significantly improves cessation outcomes and reduces the global burden of tobacco use. Introduction Tobacco use remains a major global health issue, contributing to millions of deaths annually. Nicotine’s addictive properties make quitting challenging despite widespread awareness of its risks. Effective treatment requires a comprehensive approach, combining behavioral support and pharmacotherapy. This paper reviews current methods of nicotine addiction treatment, with an emphasis on practices in Poland and globally. Aim of the Study This study aims to present a clear overview of evidence-based nicotine addiction treatments, with a focus on therapies available in Poland. It evaluates the effectiveness of both behavioral and pharmacological interventions to support healthcare professionals in smoking cessation efforts. Materials and Methods A literature review was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar. The study includes international and Polish guidelines, scientific articles, and clinical data related to nicotine addiction therapy. Sources span behavioral interventions, NRT, and pharmacological treatments like cytisine, varenicline, and bupropion. Conclusion Nicotine dependence is treatable through a combination of behavioral and pharmacological methods. In Poland, comprehensive treatment programs and modern pharmacotherapy are available and effective. Increasing access to these resources is essential to reducing smoking rates and improving public health

The Role of Non-pharmacological Treatments of Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Literature Review

Introduction and purpose: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is among the most frequently diagnosed gastrointestinal disorders posing a substantial burden on healthcare systems and presenting ongoing clinical challenges. IBS significantly affects quality of life because it is usually associated with chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. Therapeutic approaches encompass both pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies. Given the incomplete understanding of its pathophysiology, first-line treatment should prioritize non-pharmacological interventions, which are devoid of adverse effects. This article aims to give you an overview of the trials that have looked at the effects of non-pharmacological management of irritable bowel syndrome and to discuss their role in the treatment of IBS. Brief description of the state of knowledge: The group of most important non-pharmacological interventions in IBS treatment includes dietary modifications, particularly the low-FODMAP diet, as well as psychological therapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy, gut-directed hypnosis, and mindfulness-based interventions. Data from meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) highlight their efficacy in symptom reduction and quality of life improvement. A key consideration is the potential synergy between dietary and psychological approaches, as supported by emerging evidence. Conclusion: Low-FODMAP diet and psychological interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy, gut-directed hypnosis, and mindfulness, are effective treatment strategies for irritable bowel syndrome. The analyzed studies, including meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials, confirm their significant impact on symptom reduction and improvement in patients’ quality of life. Given the incomplete understanding of IBS pathophysiology, non-pharmacological approaches should be considered first-line treatments, as they minimize the risk of adverse effects

Conjunctivitis in the practice of a primary care physician – friend or foe?

Introduction and purpose: Conjunctivitis is one of the most common ocular conditions that primary care physicians encounter. As a very frequent and usually benign disease, most cases do not require a referral to a specialist and are managed by the general practitioners. Apart from being a stand-alone condition, conjunctivitis may also be a part of clinical presentations of some systemic diseases – both infectious and inflammatory. By being well-recognizable by GPs it can serve as an indicator, pointing them towards possible diagnoses and indicating the need for further testing. On the other hand, numerous ocular conditions share similar symptoms with conjunctivitis, some of which may be vision-threatening. It is therefore crucial not to misdiagnose them as simple or benign conjunctivitis, because overlooking and neglecting these diseases may have serious health consequences, including vision loss. The aim of this article is to review the condition, drawing attention to these two aspects of conjunctivitis as particularly important in the work of a primary care physician – as both a possible indicator for other, systemic conditions, and a diagnostic challenge due to a symptom overlap with many more severe ophthalmic diseases. Materials and methods: A review of literature was carried out using online platforms Google Scholar and PubMed. Articles were searched by entering keywords: conjunctivitis, red eye, primary care, general practice. Description of current knowledge: Conjunctivitis is a common condition often seen by general practitioners. It has three main types: viral, bacterial and allergic. It can manifest as a symptom of systemic diseases and shares symptoms with other eye conditions. Conjunctivitis is generally self-limiting and doesn't require treatment. However, evident bacterial cases may benefit from antiseptic or antibiotic therapy to prevent complications and reduce transmission

Quality of life in patients with locally advanced metastatic breast cancer after palliative treatment

The majority of scientists obtain subjective data by patients surveying using questionnaire. More than 400 different general and special questionnaires have been proposed and used to assess the quality of life in modern oncology. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the quality of life in the fields of mental and physical conditions of patients with metastatic breast cancer who underwent palliative surgery compared with patients who received standard treatment regimens, and to determine the level of satisfaction with social relationships. Due to quality of life concept multifactorial nature the questionnaire takes into account three main aspects: physical (medical), psychological and social. The data obtained allow to state that breast cancer patients quality of life self-perception depends on the methods of treatment used: intra-arterial polychemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, bisphosphonate therapy and palliative surgery. In the areas of mental and physical condition, the quality of life was higher in patients in the experimental group than in patients in the control group, where they received standard treatment without surgery

Analiza sytuacji przygotowania osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną do śmierci bliskich i przeżywania żałoby po stracie. Przyczynek do badań

This article attempts to answer the question of how the preparation of individuals with intellectual disabilities for the death of loved ones and the experience of grief after loss is handled. Based on an analysis of existing sources2 the author argues that in the 21st century, not all individuals with intellectual disabilities still receive adequate assistance when faced with the death of a loved one and support during the grieving process. The reasons for this situation are: (1) stigmatizing and stereotypical thinking rooted in the previous century, which leads to the underestimation of the cognitive and emotional abilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities; (2) the desire to excessively protect individuals with intellectual disabilities from difficult experiences; (3) a lack of appropriate knowledge and skills in the area of thanatology among caregivers of individuals with intellectual disabilities. The author of the text notes that the exclusion of this group from discussions about death has negative consequences for their psychophysical health. At the same time, she emphasizes the importance of including individuals with intellectual disabilities in topics related to death, appropriate preparation for the loss of loved ones, and adequate support after the loss. The general conclusion from the literature analysis is that there is a need for education in the area of thanatopedagogy and topics related to proper preparation for the death of loved ones and experiencing grief after loss for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This education should target those who interact daily with this social group, such as their caregivers, educators, assistants, social workers, and healthcare professionals. Their knowledge and appropriate thanatopedagogical competencies will lead to proper preparation and support for individuals with intellectual disabilities facing the loss of loved ones and grief after loss.

Reaction to Dominiak and Wysocki on Evictionism and Abortion

Dominiak and Wysocki are willing to stipulate, arguendo only, that the unwanted fetus is a trespasser. That is a major claim of mine in this intellectual battle I have been having with these two authors. So I greatly appreciate their attempt to show that my evictionist thesis should “still be rejected as either unlibertarian or redundant” even under conditions very favorable to my own view. Nonetheless, I persist in my proposition despite the very thorough, intelligent, reasonable, well thought out criticism they make of it.Dominiak and Wysocki are willing to stipulate, arguendo only, that the unwanted fetus is a trespasser. Evictionism in the Light of Praxeological Economic Theory

Praxeological economics has proven itself to be a potent source of universally valid insights capable of circumscribing and deepening our normative intuitions. In view of this, in the present paper, I argue that invoking economic concepts such as the general conditions of action, complementary capital goods, and long-term transactional relationships allows for articulating a critique of evictionism that is grounded in more than deductions derived from essentially contestable normative intuitions. By doing so, I intend to approach the subject of evictionism from the perspective of positive science, thus hopefully demonstrating that there is still an untapped interdisciplinary potential to be unleashed in discussions on fundamental ethical issues.Praxeological economics has proven itself to be a potent source of universally valid insights capable of circumscribing and deepening our normative intuitions. Full text link
This contribution explores the biblical dimension of Youth Catechism/2 Come and See, highlighting its spiritual, historical, and cultural richness, being elements that permeate every page of the Bible. The Bible has always shaped the life and mission of the Church, a truth that cannot be emphasized enough, given its depth and beauty. Following an introduction that lays the groundwork for the discussion, we will examine the Magisterium’s contribution through two key documents, both addressing biblical and catechetical themes. We will analyze their insights and consider what original contributions can be made regarding the biblical dimension of catechesis, particularly for young people today. The study will conclude with a reflection on the work undertaken.

Exploring Subjective Income Inequality in Europe and MENA Regions

This article examines the relationship between income inequalities and attitudes toward them in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa (MENA) regions, representing the world's most equal and unequal regions. Utilizing data from the joint European Values Survey - World Values Survey, World Income Inequality Database, and the Standardized World Income Inequality Database, the study uncovers significant differences in subjective inequalities between these regions and assesses the impact of internal income stratifications within societies. The key findings demonstrated significant differences in subjective inequalities between the European and MENA regions, which are not confirmed within the regions. Generally, there is a greater acceptance of income inequalities in MENA countries than in Europe. The results also revealed that in Europe, attitudes toward income inequalities are more diversified within income class stratification, with higher income classes tending to have a more positive attitude towards income inequalities than lower ones
