Trust your gut
Trust Your Gut is a health communication campaign aimed at raising awareness about gut
health among Singapore's young adults. Singaporeans tend to exhibit poor understanding of the topic (Lim et al, 2021) and poor gut health can contribute to the development of gastrointestinal disorders, a weakened immune system (Zhang et. al., 2015) and colorectal or gastric cancer if left untreated (Teo, 2024).
Recognising this knowledge gap and the human inclination to act only when symptoms
appear, the campaign sought to educate and engage Young Adults aged 18-35. This group
possess lifestyle and diet habits that leave them most susceptible to poor gut health. Their
heavy social media use makes them more likely to encounter and internalise misconceptions.
Gathering key insights from expert interviews and surveys, the campaign’s key messages and
strategies were devised to foster long-term behaviour changes and promote gut health
awareness. The campaign was divided into three phases:
(1) Providing bite-sized information to reinforce knowledge,
(2) Encouraging gut-healthy behavioural changes, and
(3) Sustenance of long-term habits.
Spanning from October 2024 to March 2025, key campaign tactics included social media
content, microsite and the creation of The Gut Cart – an interactive pushcart activation
bringing gut health education to life. Five mobile activations were held, including SCS’s
CAmpung Festival 2025 graced by Senior Minister of State, Mr Tan Kiat How. The campaign
garnered over 26,000 online impressions and engaged 873 young adults on-ground.
Overall, the campaign saw success in promoting gut health to the vulnerable target group and
showed potential to gain more recognition as a widespread health issue.Bachelor's degre
The allure of gambling: state and Society in Singapore (1942-1968)
This thesis examines the influence that the changing perceptions of gambling have on policies and strategies by colonial and post-colonial governments in Singapore. The period from 1942 to 1968 was a transformative era for Singapore. Through the Japanese Occupation to the period leading up to Singapore achieving self-governance and eventual independence, the different administrations made proposals to legalize gambling in the form of state lotteries. However, only the government formed by the People’s Action Party succeeded in bringing it to fruition with the formation of Singapore Pools in 1968. This perception of gambling was in stark contrast to the attitudes during British colonial rule prior to 1942. From an activity once condemned as a vice to one optimized as a justified means of funding the government. This thesis argues that the institutionalization of gambling in colonial and post-colonial Singapore serves as both a significant contributor to the economy and a mitigation of illegal activities. The political administrations’ decision to regulate lottery gambling were primarily shaped by immediate and wider political circumstances, which reinforced long standing arguments and allowed the PAP government to finally reach a breakthrough in 1968.Bachelor's degre
Sustainable finance in entrepreneurship: perspectives of ventures and investors on mission scope and sustainability risk
The grand challenge of addressing environmental and social sustainability issues through entrepreneurship has garnered significant global attention. Scholars across disciplines have responded to this pressing issue, leading to a surge in research studies aimed at exploring and understanding the complexities involved. This growing body of research underscores the urgent need for collaborative efforts to tackle grand challenges through entrepreneurial endeavors. This dissertation focuses on the intersection of entrepreneurship, environmental and social sustainability, and financial resources in three essays. Essay 1 provides a comprehensive overview of the research landscape of the emerging substream of sustainable finance in entrepreneurship (SFE). An interdisciplinary approach is adopted to cover a broad spectrum of literature on sustainable finance in entrepreneurship, extending to sustainability-oriented crowdfunding, microfinance, and socially responsible investing. By surveying the development of the literature on SFE, knowledge gaps are identified, and recommendations are offered on the theoretical scope and boundary conditions, addressing the “what, who, where, and when,” and outlining a trajectory for SFE research to advance into the academic mainstream. Essay 2 responds to one of the recommendations in Essay 1 to enhance the understanding of the temporal dynamics of SFE by conducting a longitudinal study. The study focuses on the perspective of entrepreneurs, specifically the resource-receiver side of the crucial investor–entrepreneur relationship in SFE. Drawing on the theoretical foundation of the attention-based view (ABV), I propose a non-linear relationship between the mission scope of early-stage ventures influences the acquisition of philanthropic financial resources. Essay 3 responds to the call in Essay 1 for more research on sustainability risk mitigation in entrepreneurship, rather than merely focusing on social value creation. The study examines the perspective of investors, focusing on the resource-provider side of the investor–entrepreneur relationship in SFE. I investigate how early-stage investment professionals respond to the environmental and social sustainability risk issues of their portfolio companies at the post-investment stage. This study contributes to stakeholder theory by highlighting nuances in investor influence strategies and advances SFE literature by providing insights into sustainability risk mitigation and the impact of personal beliefs.Doctor of Philosoph

Deep reinforcement learning for resource allocation in wireless networks
The advent of Internet of Things (IoT) generalizes the accessibility towards various kinds of
IoT sensors, e.g., smart cameras, temperature sensors, and hence enables intelligent services to
improve human quality of life. Building upon IoT, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) instead
focuses on improving productivity in industrial processes by interconnecting industrial devices
such as sensors to infrastructures such as Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) servers. This allows
for the interconnection between the different devices in the IIoT network. This paper explores
a novel approach that dynamically switches between policies such as Zero Wait (ZW) and
Continuous Update (CU) using Deep Q-Network (DQN), Duelling Double Q-Network
(D3QN) and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) based Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL)
method. This approach takes in real-time metrics such as server utilization rate, payload size, and acknowledgement packet size to reduce the Peak Age of Information (PAoI) violation

Resistance without precedent: rethinking the moral imperative to act
The selective retelling of past historic movements not only distorts historical narratives but confines contemporary resistance within predefined moral and political boundaries. This active process of selection, what I term as canonisation in this paper, is not a passive act of recollection. In elevating certain movements as moral exemplars, we are influenced in the way we understand principled resistance today. In turn, this selective process affects how we perceive our own moral obligations, creating an epistemic burden that obfuscates our capacity to recognise the moral imperative to resist. A game design with AI
A promising solution for adherence towards physical rehabilitation in recent research has been the usage of exercise-based serious games, or exergames, as a tool for self-driven exercise to benefit older adults’ physical and mental capabilities. However, older adults may feel a sense of frustration from exergames due to difficulty-related anxiety or boredom. In this work, we suggest that dynamic difficulty adjustment can be implemented to improve older adults’ player experience. To achieve this goal, we design a large language model-based dynamic difficulty adjustment algorithm. A pilot study involving 12 participants from all age groups show a high self-reported engagement score, which indicates that this approach toward dynamic difficulty adjustment can improve the older adults’ player experience.Bachelor's degre

This study describes an Automated File Conversion System designed to simplify document
format conversion within Nanyang Technological University's (NTU) digital environment.
Converting documents between formats such as Excel, Word, and PDF is a common yet
time-consuming task that frequently requires manual effort or third-party programs, which may
pose security concerns. To address this issue, the project used cloud automation to create a
secure, efficient, and fully integrated file conversion workflow that was designed specifically for
NTU's existing Microsoft 365 platform.
The Automated File Conversion System employed a serverless architecture to seamlessly
connect document storage with processing services, removing the need for manual interventions
while complying with NTU's data security rules. Performance testing demonstrates it saves
significantly more time compared to traditional conversion methods while maintaining high
dependability and formatting accuracy across a wide range of document types. Furthermore, the
system is designed for scalability, making it ideal for university-wide adoption without requiring
technical knowledge from users. This solution effectively addresses process bottlenecks,
resulting in immediate benefits for students and faculty members by automating document
conversions and enhancing overall productivity in academic and institutional operations.Bachelor's degre
Low-temperature preparation of SiO2-TiO2 superhydrophilic coating with multifunctional properties
Superhydrophilic coatings can rapidly spread a droplet of water, preventing the
build-up of tiny water droplets and helping to clean surfaces of contaminants and
dust particles. Such coatings can achieve anti-fogging and self-cleaning abilities.
While many studies have successfully fabricated long-lasting superhydrophilic
coatings, they incorporate complex processes and expensive equipment.
Additionally, the use of high temperature prevents the coating from being applicable
to temperature-sensitive materials such as polymer.
In this study, a simple superhydrophilic coating with antifogging and photocatalytic
self-cleaning properties was prepared using the sol-gel method and low-temperature
drying at 80°C. The coating solutions were prepared by using tetraethoxysilane
(TEOS) and titanium (IV) n-butoxide (TBOT) as precursors. A layer-by-layer dip
coating technique was employed. The dipping time and cycles were varied to explore
their effect on the long-lasting ability of the coating. The coated samples were
characterised by contact angle goniometer, digital microscope, atomic force
microscope (AFM) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Functional testing for antifogging and
photocatalytic self-cleaning abilities as well as adhesion test by crosshatching were
performed. This study demonstrates the potential to prepare transparent long-lasting superhydrophilic
