    State-space systems as dynamic generative models

    A probabilistic framework to study the dependence structure induced by deterministic discrete-time state-space systems between input and output processes is introduced. General sufficient conditions are formulated under which output processes exist and are unique once an input process has been fixed, a property that in the deterministic state-space literature is known as the echo state property. When those conditions are satisfied, the given state-space system becomes a generative model for probabilistic dependences between two sequence spaces. Moreover, those conditions guarantee that the output depends continuously on the input when using the Wasserstein metric. The output processes whose existence is proved are shown to be causal in a specific sense and to generalize those studied in purely deterministic situations. The results in this paper constitute a significant stochastic generalization of sufficient conditions for the deterministic echo state property to hold, in the sense that the stochastic echo state property can be satisfied under contractivity conditions that are strictly weaker than those in deterministic situations.     Stakeholder perspectives in resolving challenges to implement security technologies for high-security installations in Singapore

    It is essential to examine the benefits of physical security technologies for adversary threat detection and prevention to identify challenges that impact the cost and operational aspects of the users. There are limited scholarly articles on implementing security technologies, and they are paltry in the Singapore context. Therefore, this paper reviews articles related to user concerns on security and technology issues, then critically evaluates the viability of the perspectives derived by drawing relevant articles, in particular, keywords akin to the theme such as "Security Challenges", "Security Technology", "Technology Risk", and “Technology Project Management”. Furthermore, the research engaged security practitioners in Singapore through a quantitative survey with selected individuals for further qualitative interviews based on outlier responses to determine their challenges in implementing security technologies, such as long-term cost sustainability, technology complexity, and project management competency. Eventually, the paper draws the users’ perspective on the potential solutions to the identified challenges, such as proper requirement design to determine the outcome and manage cost, proper stakeholder management to improve communication and align expectations to minimise system complications.     Are we BTO-kay?: An exploratory study into citizen perceptions of Singapore public housing.

    Public housing in Singapore is hailed as a success with one of the highest homeownership rates in the world, however such metrics are based on broad, objective measures that veil the subjective realities faced by those who engage with the housing process. This study investigates the factors that influence young Singaporeans’ satisfaction with the BTO scheme. Using a qualitative design comprising fifteen semi-structured interviews, the study investigates perceptions of housing affordability, accessibility, and normative attitudes towards housing. The results show that accessibility is a key concern; while there are regular opportunities to apply for housing, supply is often outstripped by demand and the existing balloting system can inadvertently leave some couples trying for multiple years without success. Several strategies are outlined to reduce the friction associated with the BTO process and to improve accessibility to housing.Bachelor's degre

    Misty robot

    This project is inspired by and aims to improve on a former project done by Mr Karishein Chandran, project number SCSE23-0859. Following in the footsteps of Mr Chandran, this project has similarities in terms of it also being a customer service and QR recognition one. However, an offline approach was taken to make this Misty robot and Raspberry Pi (RPi) combination a standalone system that can be used anywhere regardless of internet connection. This project still employs fundamental built-in capabilities of Misty coupled with a RPi to provide customers with an interactive registration experience. However, given the offline restrictions placed on this project, the Misty-RPi system’s resources are utilized maximally and efficiently to provide an experience not dissimilar to having an internet connection. This project involves the following components: a Misty II Robot, a HTTP website to interact with Misty and keeping track of customers’ registration status and an SQLite3 database for storing customers’ information. This project provides an opportunity for event planners alike to deploy in areas even without internet connection. Furthermore, this project holds the foundation for future development of this Misty-RPi system which can be extended and scaled to fit the situation as needed.Bachelor's degre

    Enhancing campus lost and found: a full-stack prototype solution bridging official systems and student initiatives

    This is a final year implementation-based project for a full-stack solution application for handling lost items in the campus of Nanyang Technological University(NTU). The project and report cover a comprehensive analysis into the current status quo of how missing items are handled in Singapore’s University campuses on the official level, as well as student-led initiatives on the student community level. From there, unaddressed gaps are analyzed and translated into functional and nonfunctional requirements that best suit the needs of students and staff. The application includes a fully functional prototype, consisting of frontend, backend, scalable cloud storage solution, caching system and authorization & authentication mechanism etc. The report also goes into detail of each design consideration, as well as more theoretical concepts like database read/write patterns, the traditional relational vs non-relational schema considerations as well as caching strategies when designing the application. Other good software practices and related software testing concepts are also introduced as part of usability testing. The project serves as a prototype that could be adapted for broader institutional use, offering a seamless and effective solution for lost-and-found item management.Bachelor's degre

    From pixels to persons: cultivation through video games

    In recent decades, the video game industry has experienced gargantuan growth, outsizing both the music and film industries. Yet, concerns about its value within society have endured, with critics such as Nozick, Caillois, and Baudrillard targeting the transient and fictional nature of video games, which defenders including Grant Tavinor rebuff, asserting the intrinsic and instrumental video games bring to individuals. This thesis expands on this discourse by proposing a tripartite of value categories of video games – tests of skill and character, education, and social community. Case studies ranging from Minecraft to Call of Duty will assist in not only justifying these value categories, but also in addressing its potential objections that draw on the alleged correlation and causation to real-world violence, which too are questionable. A framework for identifying highly valuable video games based on key metrics like social involvement, in-game consequences, and real-world opportunities, will be offered, while stressing the increasing challenge of age restriction enforcement that highlights a parallel increase in parental responsibility in fostering healthy engagement with video games. Ultimately, this thesis elucidates the irreplaceably unique potential of video games to be a catalyst for growth, not only individually, but societally, through promoting controversy, introspection, and discourse.Bachelor's degre

    Exploring the impact of doubly selective fading channels for communication systems

    This dissertation investigates the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems under doubly selective fading channels. Standardized and custom multipath fading models were simulated to reflect realistic high-mobility environments. Several pilot-aided channel estimation and equalization methods—Least Squares (LS), Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE), as well as Linear MMSE (LMMSE) with singular value decomposition (SVD) truncation—were evaluated under both block-type and comb-type pilot schemes. Simulation results demonstrate that combining LMMSE estimation with interleaved comb-type pilot insertion yields reliable performance while reducing complexity. Additionally, an interleaved comb-type pilot structure was proposed and shown to enhance robustness against severe multipath and fast fading conditions.Master's degre

    Decentralized inertia emulation and stability analysis in AC/DC hybrid microgrids

    As the integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) like wind and solar power continues to rise, the system inertia provided by traditional synchronous generators (SGs) decreases. This reduction in system inertia causes significant challenges to frequency stability in power systems. As important indices for evaluating system stability, frequency and rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) are very important. To address this challenge, many methods have been proposed, such as energy storage systems (ESS), virtual inertia control methods, and so on. First, a decentralized inertia emulation method in a hybrid microgrid is proposed. This new method can provide virtual inertia without communication between the AC and DC sides. This method can calculate the AC side's RoCoF information based on the information from the DC side. In this section, traditional frequency regulation is analyzed. Then, the system structure and virtual inertia principles are discussed. Next, a mathematical model of the control strategy of this new method is analyzed, including its control strategy and its controller design. Finally, simulation results prove the effectiveness of this method. This thesis discusses the impact of AC and DC distribution lines on system stability based on the proposed method in a hybrid microgrid. The principles and several mathematical models of distribution lines are discussed in this section. Then, a mathematical analysis of the proposed method considering the DC distribution line is discussed. Simulations considering the parameters of 500- meter AC distribution lines and 500-meter DC distribution lines are shown and analyzed respectively. Overall, this thesis focuses on inertia emulation and stability analysis of a power system. Finally, this thesis discusses future work.Master's degre

    Is the extended mind hypothesis plausible?

    In this paper, I consider the Extended Mind Hypothesis (EMH), and argue that it is plausible. I first introduce the EMH as argued by Clark and Chalmers, which proposes that part of the mind, and therefore cognition, can be constituted by factors external to the body, and explain why it seems to be true. I then introduce two objections to the EMH, which claim that external factors cannot constitute cognition or produce cognition. Next, I refute these objections, as the processes performed by external factors can be cognitive if they fulfil Rowlands’ criterion of the cognitive. Afterwards, I explain an objection which demonstrates the criterion’s inadequacy in proving one’s ownership of external factors, and its excessive liberalism in accepting objects as a part of the mind. I then concede that the EMH in its current form, being grounded on liberal functionalism, cannot be shown to be plausible. I proceed to propose that the EMH is plausible when argued from the basis of traditional functionalism. I argue this with a thought experiment involving a sufficiently advanced information processor. I finally refute Searle’s potential challenge to my proposal, and conclude that the EMH is plausible when based on traditional functionalism.Bachelor's degre
