Abstract
For ϕ a normalized positive definite function on a locally compact abelian
group G, let πϕ be the unitary representation associated to ϕ by the GNS construc-
tion. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the vanishing of 1-cohomology
H1(G, πϕ) and reduced 1-cohomology H
1(G, πϕ). For example, H
1(G, πϕ) = 0 if
and only if either Hom(G,C) = 0 or µϕ(1G) = 0, where 1G is the trivial character
of G and µϕ is the probability measure on the Pontryagin dual Ĝ associated to ϕ
by Bochner’s Theorem. This streamlines an argument of Guichardet (see Theorem
4 in [7]).

Résumé
Soit ϕ une fonction de type positif normalisée sur un groupe localement com-
pact abélien G, et πϕ la représentation unitaire de G obtenue par construction
GNS. Nous donnons des conditions nécessaires et suffisantes pour l’annulation de
la 1-cohomologieH1(G, πϕ) et de la 1-cohomologie réduiteH

1. Introduction
The Gel’fand-Naimark-Segal construction (see [1]) provides a cor-
respondence between positive definite functions ϕ on a locally compact

group G and cyclic representations πϕ on Hilbert space. This allows one
to construct a dictionary between the functional-analytic and algebro-
geometric pictures of ϕ and πϕ. For example, ϕ is an extreme point in
the cone P(G) of positive definite functions on G if and only if πϕ is an
irreducible representation; or, there exists a constant a > 0 such that ϕ−a
is again positive definite if and only if πϕ has nonzero fixed vectors (see
[4]).
In view of their importance for rigidity questions and Kazhdan’s prop-
erty (T),1 it seems natural to try to fit 1-cohomology and reduced 1-
cohomology of πϕ in that dictionary. Two examples show that the answer
will depend heavily on the underlying group G: if ϕ is the constant func-
tion 1, then πϕ is the trivial 1-dimensional representation 1G of G, and
H1(G, 1G) = Hom(G,C); the vanishing of this group depends on the struc-
ture of the abelianized group G/[G,G] (e.g. if G is compactly generated,
then Hom(G,C) = 0 if and only if G/[G,G] is compact). For a second
example, assume that G is discrete, and let ϕ = δ1 be the Dirac measure
at the identity; then πϕ is the left regular representation λG of G on `2(G),
and H1(G,λG) = 0 if and only if G is non-amenable with vanishing first
`2-Betti number (see [2]).
In this paper we consider the case where G is a locally compact abelian
group. This assumption makes the question more tractable and gives us a
powerful tool, Bochner’s Theorem: ϕ is the Fourier transform of a positive
Borel measure µϕ on the Pontryagin dual Ĝ (see [5]). Without relying on
the cohomological machinery available in the literature (see [8, 1]), we
achieve by completely elementary means the results of this paper, namely,
we show that the existence of nontrivial 1-cohomology is determined by
two factors: the existence of non-trivial homomorphisms from G to C and
the behavior of µϕ near the trivial character 1G. This is all delineated in
a precise way in Theorem 1.

2. Statement of results
For G a locally compact group and π a unitary representation of G on a
Hilbert space Hπ, recall that the space of 1-cocycles for π is

of 1-cocycles by the closure of the space of 1-coboundaries, i.e.

Our main result is:
Theorem 1. Let ϕ be a nonconstant, normalized positive definite function
on a locally compact abelian group G.

i) H1(G, πϕ) = 0;
ii) Both of the following properties are satisfied:
a) µϕ(1G) = 0 or Hom(G,C) = 0;
b) 1G /∈ supp(µ⊥ϕ ).
Then (ii)⇒ (i), and the converse holds if G is σ-compact.
2) The following are equivalent:
i) H1(G, πϕ) = 0;
ii) µϕ(1G) = 0 or Hom(G,C) = 0.
This result will be proved in Section 4. It is essentially equivalent to
Theorem 4 in [7], but we emphasize the fact that our proof is direct and
based on explicit construction of cocycles and coboundaries. Theorem 1 is
sharp in the sense that the implication (i)⇒ (ii) in Part 1 fails in general
if G is not assumed σ-compact (see Example 1 below).
3. Proof of Proposition 1

ous algebra homomorphism with dense image (a consequence of Stone -
Weierstrass). Now compose this homomorphism with the continuous in-
clusion C0(Ĝ) → L2(Ĝ, µϕ) : h 7→ h.1. Since continuous functions with
compact support are dense in L2(Ĝ, µϕ), this inclusion has dense image.
Since the map L1(G)→ L2(Ĝ, µϕ) : f 7→ ρϕ(f).1 is the composition of the
previous maps, it has dense image, meaning that 1 is a cyclic vector for
the L1(G)-representation ρϕ. Then 1 is also a cyclic vector for the unitary
G-representation ρϕ by a Dirac sequence argument (see [4]).

4. Proof of Theorem 1

analogously for H1. As B1(G, π0ϕ) = 0, we see that H1(G, π0ϕ) = 0 if and
only if H1(G, π0ϕ) = 0, if and only if either µϕ(1G) = 0 or Hom(G,C) = 0:
this proves the implications (i) ⇒ (ii)(a) in part 1 of Theorem 1, and
(i)⇒ (ii) in part 2 of Theorem 1; moreover, it reduces the main result to:

on a locally compact abelian group G.
1) If 1G /∈ supp(µ⊥ϕ ), then H1(G, π⊥ϕ ) = 0. The converse holds if G is

Remark: As was pointed out by the referee of a previous version,
when G is separable, combining Corollary 1 and Proposition 2 in [6], one

Example 1. In Part 1 of Theorems 1 and 2, the converse implications
are false when G is not assumed to be σ-compact. Indeed, let G be an
uncountable abelian group with the discrete topology, and take ϕ = δ1.
Then πϕ is the left regular representation λG on `2(G), while µϕ = µ⊥ϕ
is the Haar measure on the compact group Ĝ. Since µϕ has full support,
in particular 1G lies in its support. On the other hand H1(G,λG) = 0 by
Proposition 4.13 in [3].
To prove the implication “⇒” in part 1 of Theorem 2, we will need:

Abstract
La manipulation d’une trajectoire géométrique au-dessus d’une fonction à
valeurs dans Rd est moins aisée dans le cas d = 2 que dans le cas d = 1, notamment
car le produit tensoriel n’est pas commutatif pour d > 1. Afin de contourner
cette difficulté dans le cas d = 2, cette note introduit une notion de trajectoires
géométriques pour les fonctions à valeurs complexes, aussi simple à manipuler que
dans le cas d = 1, en remplaçant le produit tensoriel par le produit (commutatif)
usuel sur C dans les définitions. Le lien avec l’intégrale des trajectoires rugueuses
dans le cas d = 2 est étudié, et une application du théorème de Cauchy est proposée.

Résumé
Working with a geometric rough path over a Rd-valued function is more difficult
for d = 2 than for d = 1, because the tensor product isn’t commutative for d > 1.
In order to bypass that difficulty for d = 2, a notion of geometric rough paths for
C-valued functions, easier as for d = 1, is defined by replacing the tensor product
by the usual (commutative) product on C in definitions. The link with the rough
integral for d = 2 is studied, and an application of Cauchy’s theorem is provided.

1. Introduction
Il est proposé dans ce travail d’utiliser l’analyse complexe pour simplifier
la manipulation des trajectoires α-géométriques au-dessus de fonctions κ-
höldériennes de [0, T ] dans R2 ; T > 0 et α, κ ∈]1/3, 1/2] tels que α < κ.
Afin d’étudier des équations différentielles stochastiques dirigées par le
mouvement brownien fractionnaire (mBf) analytique, S. Tindel et J. Un-
terberger ont introduit dans [6] une théorie des trajectoires rugueuses com-
plexes en adaptant l’approche par incréments de M. Gubinelli [3]. Dans ce
contexte, les auteurs ont notamment construit une trajectoire géométrique
prolongeant les propriétés probabilistes du mBf analytique, y compris pour
des valeurs de l’indice de Hurst inférieures ou égales à 1/4. Ce n’est pas le
cas de la trajectoire géométrique construite par approximations linéaires
au-dessus du mBf à valeurs dans Rd ; d > 1 (cf. P. Friz et N. Victoir [2],
Theorem 15.33).
S. Tindel et J. Unterberger [6], ainsi que B.M. Werness [8] sur les évo-
lutions de Schramm-Loewner, illustrent l’intérêt d’une théorie des tra-
jectoires rugueuses complexes, notamment pour résoudre des problèmes
d’analyse stochastique.
Dans le cas particulier mentionné au début, le présent article se concentre
sur une relation entre l’intégrale des trajectoires géométriques et l’intégrale
des trajectoires géométriques complexes. Un théorème de Cauchy rugueux
est ensuite démontré. Enfin, l’existence de l’intégrale des trajectoires géo-
métriques pour une classe de champs de vecteurs ne satisfaisant pas les
conditions habituelles est établie via le théorème de Cauchy rugueux.
Ce travail se concentre donc sur l’apport de la théorie des trajectoires
géométriques complexes à l’intégration des trajectoires géométriques. Les
approches des trajectoires rugueuses employées sont celles de T. Lyons (cf.
p.ex. T. Lyons et Z. Qian [4]), ainsi que P. Friz et N. Victoir (cf. p.ex. P.
Friz et N. Victoir [2]).
