Introduction
1. A brief history of the theory of ordered rings
Numerous mathematical themes with classical roots and enduring math-
ematical significance come together in the theory of ordered rings. Interest-
ingly, many of them have a common origin in Hilbert’s work [Hi] on the
foundations of geometry. For example, non-Archimedean ordered fields were
first introduced into the mathematical literature in order to show the inde-
pendence of the Axiom of Archimedes. Another prominence in the landscape
of ordered rings is Hilbert’s 17th problem, which originated in the context of
Hilbert’s work on problems concerning geometric constructions—see [PD]
for a discussion; and of course it was in working on the 17th Problem that
Artin and Schreier developed the theory of real closed fields.
Mathematical themes mix, evolve and transform as the research groups
that develop them encounter one another, exchange ideas and collabo-
rate. Since it was the purpose of the 2007 Conference on Ordered Rings
(“ORD07”) to continue this process, it is meaningful to look back toward
the sources and original springs in order to trace the flow and mix to the
present. What one views as the main stream is always somewhat subjective.
We shall present our thoughts and associations with regard to the histor-
ical development, up to the point where currently active research can be
identified.
In 1907, H. Hahn [Ha] published path-breaking work on the structure
of non-Archimedean ordered abelian groups and fields—the first significant
step in studying non-Archimedean ordered systems after Hilbert. In the
1950s, Paul Conrad simplified this work in his dissertation, and later, with
his students Harvey and Holland, he generalized the Hahn Representation to
lattice-ordered structures. Conrad and his mathematical descendents have
been the major contributors to the purely algebraic theory of ordered struc-
tures in the U.S.A. Ever expanding their horizons, these researchers have de-
veloped detailed structure theories for lattice-ordered groups (both commu-
tative and non-commutative), a great body of knowledge on canonical exten-

sion of Archimedean lattice-ordered groups and numerous results on lattice-
ordered rings and fields. There have been significant inputs/exchanges from
universal algebra and lattice-theory (areas shaped by the work of Garret
Birkhoff) and from logic, and important relationships with Russian research
groups working on ordered structures. A good guide to much of this work
is Darnel’s comprehensive textbook [D]. The conference proceedings [M89],
[HM] and [M02] provide a glimpse of the activity in this area in the last 20
years.
A second major source for the theory of ordered rings has come from
work on rings of continuous functions, initiated by Hewitt in 1948 and fur-
thered by the influential 1960 textbook of Gilman and Jerison [GJ]. Mel
Henriksen is widely recognized as the unnamed third author of this ba-
sic reference. During the 1980s, it became clear that certain themes from
this work had deep relevance to problems arising in the study of extensions
of Archimedean lattice-ordered groups. In this context, Hager developed a
major research program of constructing and classifying functorial closure
operators of Archimedean lattice-ordered groups with weak unit, using the
Yosida representation as an important tool. An early step was to show that
every such object has an f -ring canonically associated with it. For the past
two decades, Hager and collaborators Ball and Martinez as well as others
have been elaborating this work. As a spin-off, Schwartz and Madden trans-
ferred the entire program to the context of real algebraic geometry in [SM].
Other important developments have involved the use of frames (i.e., locales
or “pointless topologies”) in place of traditional spaces for representations,
and large parts of already developed theory have been greatly streamlined
by this.
The connection between real algebraic geometry and ordered structures
comes about as follows. Consider the collection of subsets of real affine space
that one would have to consider in attempting to describe the real solutions
of a system of real polynomial equations. These would be, in the first place,
the zero-sets of polynomials and then, in addition, all sets obtainable from
these by means of union, complementation and projection. By Tarski’s elim-
ination theorem for real closed fields, this collection coincides precisely with
the collection of all sets defined by polynomial inequalities—the so-called
semialgebraic sets. Thus, one is forced to consider order relations in order
to study the real solutions of systems of polynomial equations. This funda-
mental idea can be elaborated in an amazing number of ways. In parallel
to complex geometry, where classical elimination theory leads to the Null-
stellensatz, Tarski’s real elimination theory leads to a Real Nullstellensatz,
which provides a systematic correspondence between semialgebraic sets in
real affine n-space and ordered residue rings of the ring of real polynomials

in n variables. In abstract real algebraic geometry, related ideas lead to the
notion of the real spectrum, introduced by Coste and Roy around 1980.
(This construction, it turns out, was actually anticipated in certain ways
within the theory of representations of -groups and f -rings by researchers
in Ordered Algebraic Systems.) In real algebraic geometry, relations to valu-
ation theory have been very important, since each ordering of the coordinate
ring of a real variety gives rise to a real place; see [L]. Mathematical logicians
took the idea in a different direction, abstracting the most basic features
of the system of sets definable by polynomial inequalities and in this way
forming the idea of an o-minimal structure, which today is an exceptionally
fertile area of research.
Possibly one of the most interesting unsolved problems in the intersection
of the three areas listed is the famous Pierce-Birkhoff Conjecture (PBC),
which asserts that every continuous semialgebraic piecewise-polynomial func-
tion on real affine n-space can be expressed as the supremum of infima of
polynomials from a finite collection. It was first formulated in the way just
stated by Henriksen and Isbell in the early 1960s. At present, only the n = 2
case has been proved. The difficulty is associated with the singularities of
the “pieces”, where by “piece” we mean a subset of n-space where the given
piecewise polynomial coincides with a single polynomial. The PBC may
be the most important “challenge problem” currently being worked on in
real algebraic geometry. It is a severe test of the conceptual apparatus we
presently possess.
2. A reminiscence of Melvin Henriksen, by James Madden
Mel Henriksen passed away on October 14, 2009, in Albuquerque, New
Mexico (USA) at the age of 82, after a brief illness. Mel taught me topology
in my first year of graduate school at Wesleyan University, and he has been
a guiding figure in my mathematical career ever since. I last saw him in
Las Cruces, New Mexico in August 2009 at the Conference on Boolean
Algebras, Lattice Theory, Algebra (algebra of logic and universal algebra),
Set Theory and Topology (set theoretic and point-free): “BLAST,” hosted
by New Mexico State University. He was fully engaged in the mathematical
activities, attending and making thoughtful comments on all the lectures—
or at least those held during the days that I was able to be there—and
obviously enjoying the camaraderie of the many mathematicians who shared
his passions. Along with his many offspring and friends, both in and out of
academia, I will miss him.

3. Overview of this volume
This volume contains 12 carefully refereed articles by participants in
the Conference on Ordered Rings (Ord07) at Louisiana State University,
in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA, April 25–28, 2007. That conference was
dedicated to Melvin Henriksen, on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
The 17 (co-)authors who contributed to this volume were among the 39
mathematicians from France, Germany, Tunisia, and the United States who
participated in the conference.
This volume contains both expository papers and original research pa-
pers on topics such as -groups, -rings, f -rings, real holomorphy rings, clean
rings, SV-porings, rings generated by units, Hilbert’s 17th problem, and the
Pierce-Birkhoff conjecture.

Sur les quotients discrets de semi-groupes complexes

RÉSUMÉ. — Soit X = G/K un espace symétrique hermitien irréductible
de type non-compact et soit S ⊂ GC le semi-groupe associé formé des
compressions de X. Soit Γ ⊂ G un sous-groupe discret. Nous donnons
une condition suffisante pour que le quotient Γ\S soit une variété de
Stein. En outre nous démontrons qu’en général Γ\S n’est pas de Stein ce
qui réfute une conjecture de Achab, Betten et Krötz.
ABSTRACT. — Let X = G/K be an irreducible Hermitian symmetric
space of the non-compact type and let S ⊂ GC be the associated com-
pression semigroup. Let Γ ⊂ G be a discrete subgroup. We give a sufficient
condition for Γ\S to be Stein. Moreover, we show that Γ\S is not Stein
in general which disproves a conjecture by Achab, Betten and Krötz.
0. Introduction
Soit X = G/K un espace symétrique hermitien irréducible de type non-
compact et soit S ⊂ GC le semi-groupe associé consistant des compressions
de X. On démontre dans [ABK04] que le quotient Γ\S est holomorphique-
ment séparable pour tout sous-groupe discret Γ ⊂ G. De plus, ils conjec-
turent que ce quotient est une variété de Stein et ils vérifient cette conjecture
dans le cas où G = SL(2, R) et Γ ⊂ SL(2, Z).
Dans ce travail nous donnons une condition suffisante pour que Γ\S soit
de Stein.

Théorème 2.4. — Soit X = G/K un espace symétrique hermitien irré-
ducible de type non-compact et soit S ∈ GC le semi-groupe associé formé
des compressions de X. Soit Γ ⊂ G un sous-groupe discret qui agit librement
sur X. Si X/Γ est une variété de Stein, alors Γ\S est de Stein aussi.
Après avoir présenté les fondements nécessaires de la théorie des espaces
symétriques hermitiens et des semi-groupes de compression dans la première
section, nous démontrons ce théorème. Notre preuve utilise essentiellement
le fibré GC → GC/KC → Z (où nous notons par Z le dual compact de X)
et des techniques qui ont été développées dans [Mie08]. Dans la dernière
section nous montrons que, si G = SL(2, R) et si G/Γ est compacte, alors
Γ\S n’est pas de Stein ce qui réfute la conjecture générale dans [ABK04].

1. Le semi-groupe de compression associé à un espace
symétrique hermitien
Dans cette section nous parcourons les parties de la théorie des espaces
symétriques hermitiens non-compacts X dont nous avons besoin afin de
définir le semi-groupe de compression associé à X. Pour en savoir plus nous
prions le lecteur de s’adresser à [Hel01] et [HN93].
Soit X = G/K un espace symétrique hermitien irréducible de type non-
compact. Nous pouvons supposer que G est un groupe de Lie réel connexe
simple sans facteurs compacts qui est plongé dans sa complexification uni-
verselle GC et que K est un sous-groupe maximal compact de G qui est
défini par l’involution de Cartan θ ∈ Aut(G). Nous dénotons par g = k ⊕ p
la décomposition de l’algèbre de Lie g de G par rapport à θ∗ ∈ Aut(g).
Puisque X est une variété complexe sur laquelle G agit par des transfor-
mations holomorphes, il y a une structure complexe J sur p invariante par
l’action adjointe de K. Nous étendons J comme un operateur C–linéaire à
pC. Puisque les valeurs propres de J sont ±i, on obtient la décomposition en
somme direct pC = p+⊕p−. On peut démontrer que p± est une sous-algèbre
commutative de gC et [kC, p±] ⊂ p±.
Soient KC et P± les sous-groupes analytiques de GC dont l’algèbre de
Lie est donnée par kC et p±. Alors KC et P± sont des sous-groupes fermés
et complexes de GC. De plus, l’ensemble Q± := KCP± est un sous-groupe
fermé complexe parabolique et isomorphe au produit semi-direct KC P±.
L’espace complexe homogène Z := GC/Q− peut être identifié au dual com-
pact de X et l’application X → Z, gK → gQ−, définit un plongement

holomorphe de X comme un ouvert de Z. Ce plongement est connu comme
le plongement de Borel. Désormais nous regardons X comme l’orbite ouverte
G · eQ− ⊂ Z.

s’appelle le semi-groupe ouvert complexe de compression associé à X.
Il suit immédiatement que S est un sous-ensemble ouvert et (G × G)–
invariant de GC où l’action de G × G est donnée par z → g1zg−12 . De plus,
S est stable par rapport à la multiplication de GC et par conséquent un
semi-groupe. Ce semi-groupe de compression est un cas particulier d’un
semi-groupe d’Ol’shanskĭı (comparer chapitre 8 dans [HN93]).
Théorème 1.2 ([Nee00]). — Le semi-groupe de compression S est un
domaine d’holomorphie hyperbolique au sens de Kobayashi dans GC. En
particulier, le groupe G × G agit proprement sur S.
Le quotient Γ\S est une variété complexe pour tout sous-groupe Γ ⊂ G
qui agit par multiplication de gauche sur S. Le théorème suivant est un cas
particulier d’un resultat plus génèral de Achab, Betten et Krötz ([ABK04]).
Théorème 1.3. — Soit Γ un sous-groupe discret de G.

2. Si G/Γ est compact, alors les fonctions holomorphes bornées séparent
les points de Γ\S, i. e. Γ\S est hyperbolique au sens de Caratheodory.
3. Si G = SL(2, R) et si Γ est contenu dans SL(2, Z), alors Γ\S est une
variété de Stein.
La preuve de ce théorème utilise la théorie des représentations de S.
Enfin, nous notons l’observation suivante qui se trouve sans démonstra-
tion dans [BR01]. Pour l’aise du lecteur nous en donnons une démonstration.
À l’egard de la théorie des ensembles réel-algébriques et semi-algébriques
nous renvoyons le lecteur à [BCR98].
Lemme 1.4. — Le semi-groupe S est un sous-ensemble semi-algébrique
de GC.

Démonstration. — Soit A:GC×Z → Z×Z l’application (g, z) → (g·z, z)
et soit pGC :GC ×Z → GC la projection sur la première composante. Il n’est
pas difficile de montrer que l’on a :

De plus il est bien connu que GC porte une unique structure de groupe
linéaire-algébrique et que GC agit de façon algébrique sur la variété pro-
jective Z. Puisque G est réel-algébrique dans GC, le théorème de Tarski-
Seidenberg implique que l’orbite X = G · eQ− est semi-algébrique. Par
conséquent, son complémentaire Z \ X et son adhérence X sont également
semi-algébriques, donc A−1(Z\X×X) est semi-algébrique. Enfin, le théorè-
me de Tarski-Seidenberg implique que GC \ S et par conséquent S sont
semi-algébriques. 
2. Une condition suffisante pour que Γ\S soit de Stein
Nous continuons la notation etablie dans la section précédente. La com-
plexification de l’espace symétrique hermitien X = G/K est par définition
la variété complexe homogène XC := GC/KC. Puisque KC est fermé dans
Q− ∼= KC  P−, l’application naturelle p:GC/KC → GC/Q− est un fibré
holomorphe dont la fibre est donnée par P− ∼= Cdim X et dont le groupe
structural est le groupe complexe connexe Q−/I où I est le sous-groupe
maximal de KC qui est normal dans Q−.
Il est connu que l’application gKC → (gQ−, gQ+) est un plongement
ouvert de XC dans GC/Q− ×GC/Q+. Il s’ensuit que nous obtenons que le
diagramme

est commutatif.
Soit π:GC → GC/KC le fibré principal de groupe structural KC. Nous
commençons par montrer que l’image π(S) est une variété de Stein. Un
théorème de Matsushima et Morimoto assure que π(S) est de Stein si et
seulment si SKC est de Stein.
Proposition 2.1. — Le domaine SKC ⊂ GC est de Stein. Par consé-
quent, π(S) ⊂ GC/KC est de Stein.

Démonstration. — Puisque S est invariant par rapport à la multiplica-
tion à droite de K, on obtient une action holomorphe locale par KC sur S.
Par [Hei91] il y a une variété de Stein S∗ munie d’une action holomorphe
de KC et un plongement ouvert holomorphe K–equivariant ϕ:S → S∗ tel
que S∗ = KC · ϕ(S). De plus, S∗ est universel ce qui implique l’existence
d’une application holomorphe KC–equivariante Φ:S∗ → SKC tel que Φ ◦ϕ
cöıncide avec l’inclusion S ↪→ SKC. Il s’en suit que Φ est surjectif et lo-
calement biholomorphe. Donc il suffit de montrer que Φ est une application
finie. Dans notre situation c’est le cas si et seulement si les fibres de Φ sont
finies.
Pour z0 ∈ S nous définisson l’ensemble

Or, S est semi-algébrique par Lemme 1.4 et KC est un groupe linéaire
algébrique, donc KC[z0] est semi-algébrique. En particulier, le nombre de
composantes connexes de KC[z0] est fini. Nous allons démontrer que #Φ−1(z0)
est borné par le nombre de composantes connexes de KC[z0].
Soit z ∈ Φ−1(z0). Alors il y a un élément k ∈ KC tel que k · z ∈ ϕ(S).
Par conséquent, nous avons Φ(k · z) = k · Φ(z) = z0k−1 ∈ S, i. e. k ∈
KC[z0]. Comme Φ|ϕ(S):ϕ(S) → S est biholomorphe, nous concluons k · z =
ϕ(z0k−1), ce qui est équivalent à z = k−1 ·ϕ(z0k−1). Comme réciproquement
tout élément z ∈ S∗ de la forme z = k−1 · ϕ(z0k−1) avec k ∈ KC[z0] est
contenu dans Φ−1(z0), nous obtenons une application surjective
KC[z0] → Φ−1(z0), k → k−1 · ϕ(z0k−1). (2.1)
Si k ∈ KC[z0] est contenu dans la composante connexe de l’élément neutre,
nous avons ϕ(z0k−1) = k·ϕ(z0). Cette observation implique que l’application
(2.1) est localement constante, ce qui montre la proposition. 
Remarque. — La variété S∗ est la globalisation universelle de la KC–
action locale sur S au sens de [Pal57].
La proposition 2.1 nous permet de donner la condition equivalente suiv-
ante pour que Γ\S soit de Stein.
Proposition 2.2. — Soit Γ ⊂ G un sous-groupe discret. Alors Γ\S est
de Stein si et seulement si Γ\π(S) est de Stein.
Démonstration. — Si Γ\S est de Stein, alors la globalisation universelle
Γ\S∗ de la KC–action locale sur Γ\S est aussi de Stein. Comme KC[Γg] =
KC[g] pour tout g ∈ S, le même argument qu’au-dessus implique que
Γ\SKC est de Stein, ce qui montre que Γ\π(S) est de Stein.

Réciproquement, si Γ\π(S) est de Stein, alors Γ\SKC est aussi de Stein.
Puisque Γ\S est plongé comme ouvert dans Γ\SKC et localement de Stein,
l’affirmation découle d’un argument à la Docquier-Grauert (comparer Propo-
sition 4.7 dans [Mie08]). 
Soit p:GC/KC → GC/Q− le fibré holomorphe et considérons X ⊂
GC/Q−.
Lemme 2.3. — On a π(S) ⊂ p−1(X).
Démonstration. — Soit g ∈ S. Comme les applications π and p sont
GC–equivariantes, nous en déduisons que p ◦ π(g) = g · p ◦ π(e) = g · eQ−.
À cause de eQ− ∈ X, la définition de S implique que gQ− ∈ X. 
La restriction p: p−1(X) → X est un fibré holomorphe de fibre P− et de
groupe structural complexe connexe Q−. De plus, le groupe G agit par des
automorphismes de fibré sur p−1(X).
Le théorème suivant donne une condition suffisante pour que Γ\S soit
de Stein.
Théorème 2.4. — Soit Γ ⊂ G un sous-group discret qui agit librement
sur X. Si X/Γ est de Stein, alors Γ\S est également de Stein.
Démonstration. — Comme le groupe Γ agit par automorphismes de
fibré, nous obtenons le fibré holomorphe Γ\p−1(X) → X/Γ (comparer
Proposition 6.1 dans [Mie08]). Comme X/Γ est de Stein, la fibre P− est
de Stein, et le groupe structural de ce fibré est complexe connexe, nous en
déduisons que Γ\p−1(X) est de Stein. Puisque π(S) est de Stein et Γ\π(S)
est un ouvert dans Γ\p−1(X), nous concluons que Γ\π(S) est de Stein et
donc que Γ\S est de Stein. 
Exemple. —
1. Soit G = SL(2, R) et soit Γ ⊂ G un sous-groupe discret qui agit
librement sur le demi-plan supérieur H tel que la surface de Riemann
R := H/Γ est non-compacte. Dans ce cas R est de Stein, donc le
quotient Γ\S est de Stein aussi. Cette observation donne une nouvelle
démonstration du Théorème 1.3 (3).
2. Si X = G/K est un espace symétrique hermitien quelconque de type
non-compact et si Γ ⊂ G et cyclique, alors X/Γ et donc Γ\S sont de
Stein par [Mie08].

Démonstration. — Par la proposition 2.2 le quotient Γ\S est de Stein si
et seulement si Γ\π(S) est de Stein. Nous avons vu que π(S) contient une
hypersurface G–invariante Levi-plate F ce qui implique que Γ\π(S) contient
l’hypersurface compacte Levi-plate Γ\F . Soit f une fonction holomorphe
quelconque sur Γ\π(S) et soit z ∈ Γ\F un point dans lequel la norme
absolue de la restriction de f sur Γ\F prend son maximum. Comme Γ\F

du maximum implique que f doit être constante sur cette feuille. Nous en
