    No full text
This paper tries to explore the differences and convergences between language acquisition and translator training. The differences will be observed from the competences acquired in both classes, the methodology, and the history of the approaches used by both. The convergences will be seen from the shift of focus in teaching, the use of context, the teaching of reading and writing, the use of dictionaries, and the use of Task-Based Approaches. These differences and convergences are expected to give better ideas on how to teach both language and translation

INTEGRATING CULTURAL AWARENESS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING MATERIALS

    No full text
Over the past few years, English has increased itself as a lingua franca of international community. Due to this fact, various problems have arisen in English Teaching. They regard to several aspects of English, e.g. grammar or vocabulary. In this paper, I shall discuss the importance of Integrating Cultural Awareness in English Teaching Materials, which I think is one of the most complex problems in teaching English as an international language. \ud To me, culture is inseparable with language. For instance, when my students and I are discussing houses, we also talk about cultural differences regarding houses and the furniture. Americans, for example, do not use a “gayung” when they take a bath. I explain the cultural differences and tell the students that not all words in Indonesian can be translated into English because of the cultural differences. Also, the meaning of rooms designed in an American’s house is different. In Indonesia, the meaning of living room could be “ruang keluarga” whereas it is actually “ruang santai". \ud To sum up, the materials used for English teaching should cover cultural awareness as the speakers of English not only come from the English-speaking countries, but they are also from the non-English speaking countries. \u

Over the last three years the number of students choosing Bunda Mulia University as a university choice has steadily increased. Studies have demonstrated that university preference at the time that students enter university may be significantly associated with their ultimate choice. The investigation is based on the results of a study that was undertaken to determine factors that influence choices that senior high school students make decision to enter university. This research examines this phenomenon in the context of students’ choice of a university. What is the relative influence that various sources of information have on students' choice of university? How does the influence of friends and family members compare to the influence of non-personal media? How do high-touch tools like campus visits compare to high-tech tools such as social media sites? Results of a survey of students showed that parents, along with other family and friends, were the most influential sources of information. Outside of personal contacts, students' visit to campus was also highly influential. Moreover, students who chose Bunda Mulia University were much more likely to demonstrate a societal orientation. Several factors appear to drive students to choose Bunda Mulia University, most notably having a societal orientation and a desire for a varied scope of influences. Emerging peer-to-peer social media communication, and the role of influential peers, is changing the way that marketers communicate with prospects and students to choose universities. \ud Factor analysis is a precise method to perform this research, since factor analysis will generate factors that demonstrate acceptable internal consistency and describe the important influences in shaping university preferences. The correlations between the factors and Bunda Mulia University as first university choice are in the expected directions of this research and provide evidence for construct validity of the questionnaire. If the factors that influence students to choose Bunda Mulia University can be identified accurately, then it may be possible to use such a model to change Bunda Mulia University admission policies so that the number of students choosing to enter Bunda Mulia University can be increased.\u
