Paraguayan mission in Spanish archives as a space for the formation of cultural and intellectual networks
The objective of this article is to make visible the documentary search missions to Spanish archives as a space for the circulation of knowledge and the construction of cultural, intellectual and political networks between Americans and Europeans at the turn of the century. The Paraguayan mission carried out by Blas Garay, between 1896 and 1897, is analyzed. This case should be considered as an example of the many missions that occurred between 1860 and 1930 by Americans to various European collections to search for documentation to resolve boundary issues or to write History. National. The research focuses on showing Garay’s strategies for the construction of cultural and intellectual networks carried out during the mission. The work of searching, copying and legalizing documents required time, financial resources, and especially trained personnel for the task. It is in this context where the formation of networks to facilitate the work is essential. These networks, which initially function to fulfill the objective of the mission, are those that subsequently facilitate access for American men of letters to privileged spaces on the old continent and vice versa. In the context of consolidation of the American States, search missions are a fundamental object of analysis to understand the cultural and intellectual relations between Americans and Europeans during the first decades of the 20th century. Justice and moral economies in “Modular, Adaptive, and Decentralized” (MAD) water systems
Corresponding author. E-mail address: [email protected] (M. Beresford).“MAD Water” systems (modular, adaptive, decentralized infrastructures) will expand to meet human water needs under future climate change, migration, and urbanization scenarios. Yet the use of MAD systems often undermines water justice. Here we argue that identifying and analyzing moral economies for water can allow scholars to understand—and possibly predict—when and why justice in MAD water systems is upheld, breaks down, or becomes unstable. Moral economies are institutional arrangements in which shared understandings of justice normatively regulate the distribution and exchange of basic resources. We review the moral economies concept, explain an operational framework for analyzing moral economies, and use this framework to illustrate how moral economies function to uphold justice (or not) within three types of MAD water systems today: water sharing arrangements, informal water vending markets, and small-scale water commons. We show that when moral economies are embedded and operating successfully in MAD water systems, they can create check-and-balance mechanisms against injustice. But when moral economies are absent or failing, water injustices often prevail. The moral economies framework therefore provides not only a tool for theory building and analysis, but also a possible language and pathway for communities to organize for justice. We conclude by outlining key areas for future research.Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologí

Unveiling the hidden impact : wildlife roadkill assessment in the Paraguayan Chaco
Corresponding Address: Goossen-Lebron, Thomas. Email Addresses: [email protected] incidence of wildlife roadkill significantly threatens the persistence of wildlife populations and disrupts the ecological functionality of ecosystems. This study investigates the impact of roadkills on wildlife in the Paraguayan Chaco, focusing on a 250-km segment of Route 9 ‘Dr. Carlos Antonio López’ between Villa Hayes and Pozo Colorado. We conducted a road survey for 15 months and recorded 2338 carcasses, identifying 87 species, with mammals (41.3%), reptiles (32.3%) and birds (19.8%) being the most observed groups. The species most frequently killed included Cerdocyon thous, Caracara plancus, Thamnodynastes hypoconia and Procyon cancrivorus. We also recorded species with conservation concern. Additionally, we estimated mortality rates by accounting for sampling errors such as carcass removal and searcher efficiency, revealing annual roadkill rates of 5183 mammals, 19 402 birds and 5020 reptiles on the 250 km per year. Spatial analysis using Ripley's K statistic and HotSpot Identification highlighted significant variation in roadkill distribution across different taxonomic groups and seasons, with 51 km of road identified as hotspots when analysing all groups together. Notably, there was minimal overlap in hotspot locations between seasons and taxonomic groups, emphasizing the need for targeted mitigation strategies. Our findings challenge previous macroecological assessments suggesting low roadkill rates in Paraguay, underscoring the importance of local studies in accurately assessing ecological impacts. This study provides critical baseline data for conservation efforts and calls for further research to develop and implement effective roadkill mitigation strategies in Latin America, especially in Chaco region. Optimal control of fractional punishment in optional public goods game
Punishment is probably the most frequently used mechanism to increase cooperation in Public Goods Games (PGG); however, it is expensive. To address this problem, this paper introduces an optimal control problem that uses fractional punishment to promote cooperation. We present a series of computational experiments illustrating the effects of single and combined terms of the optimization cost function. In the findings, the optimal controller outperforms the use of constant fractional punishment and gives an insight into the period and size of the penalization to be implemented with respect to the defection in the game. E-mail: [email protected] frogs are exclusively aquatic anurans distributed across much of South America. They have been the subject of several phylogenetic studies, but the results of these studies are contradictory regarding the monophyly of PseudisWagler, 1830 and the validity of some species, including Pseudis platensisGallardo, 1961. Using two mitochondrial and three nuclear genes, together with a comprehensive sampling of Pseudis species and an extensive outgroup, we aimed to assess the monophyly of the genus and investigate the systematics of P. platensis. The results of distinct phylogenetic reconstruction analyses based on different optimality criteria recovered conflicting topologies regarding the clade containing Pseudis minutaGünther, 1858 and Pseudis cardosoiKwet, 2000. Therefore, we propose synonymizing Lysapsus Cope, 1862 with Pseudis to maintain taxonomic stability. Additionally, our results revealed previously unrecognized diversity within Pseudis paradoxa Linnaeus, 1758 and P. platensis. Both species comprised multiple well-supported clades in phylogenetic inferences using different approaches. Notably, P. platensis consisted of three clades, one of which included the topotype of the species. Conversely, the topotype of the subspecies P. paradoxa occidentalis, currently considered a synonym of P. platensis, was nested within one of the clades of P. paradoxa. Identification of magnetization inductance for six-phase induction machines driven by modulated predictive control in field weakening zone
Corresponding author: Magno Ayala ([email protected])Society Section: IEEE Power & Energy Society SectionFinite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) has achieved superiority in managing multiphase induction machines due to its quick dynamic response, control flexibility, and overall good performance. Its advantages, including simplicity, computational efficiency, compensation for system perturbations, and effective handling of multivariable problems, have made it a competitive alternative in various industrial applications. Nevertheless, FCS-MPC has some limitations. It is highly dependent on the accuracy of the predictive model’s parameters. Unfortunately, the estimation of magnetizing inductance, the most critical factor, especially in the weakening field region, has not been studied yet. Focusing on this gap, this article proposes a technique to estimate the magnetizing inductance in the field weakening zone for a six-phase asymmetrical induction machine driven by the FCS-MPC. Experimental tests have verified the effectiveness of the proposed method, considering stator currents and rotor speed tracking, as well as a reduction in the ( x−y ) currents. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection and risk behavior in vaccinated and non-vaccinated paraguayan young women
Correspondence: [email protected] article belongs to the Special Issue Latest Advances in Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Research.Cervical cancer is a global health concern and ranks fourth among the most prevalent cancers in women worldwide. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a known precursor of cervical cancer and preventive measures include prophylactic vaccines. This study focused on sexually active Paraguayan women aged 18–25 years, exploring the intersection of HPV vaccination and sexual behavior. Among 254 participants, 40.9% received the Gardasil-4 vaccine, with no significant differences in sexual behavior between the vaccinated and unvaccinated sexually active groups. However, a notable decrease in the prevalence of HPV among the vaccinated women highlights the efficacy of this vaccine in reducing infections. The prevalence of any HPV type was 37.5% in vaccinated participants compared to 56.7% in unvaccinated participants (p = 0.0026). High-risk HPV types showed a significant difference, with a prevalence of 26.0% in vaccinated women compared with 52.7% in unvaccinated women (p < 0.001). Although a potential decline in genital warts was observed among the vaccinated individuals, statistical significance (p = 0.0564) was not reached. Despite the challenges in achieving high vaccination coverage, the observed reduction in HPV prevalence underscores the importance of ongoing monitoring, healthcare professional recommendations, and comprehensive risk management. These findings contribute to dispelling concerns about HPV vaccination influencing sexual behavior, advocating further large-scale research to explore the impact of vaccines on various HPV types and potential cross-protection.
