    The Impact of Lack of Resources on Declining Students’ Enrolments in Design and Technology in Botswana Junior Secondary Schools

    Lack of resources has resulted in declining students’ enrolment in design and technology in Botswana junior secondary schools by up to 6% per year over 10 years, despite positive encouragement by the government. Based on the PATT (pupils’ attitude towards technology) theoretical framework this study indicated how a lack of resources in Botswana junior secondary schools impacted upon students’ attitudes towards design and technology. Research from most parts of the world indicates that attitudes toward technology is increasingly becoming an important area of research as the impact of technology on society increases. Technological impact on society has resulted in a shift of perceptions about the role of technology education the world over. Views of students expressed during focus group interviews and analysed through a hybrid of a data driven inductive approach and deductive a priori template of codes approach indicated that lack of resources impacted upon students’ enjoyment and performance of Design and Technology

    Collaboration within Student Design Teams Participating in Architectural Design Competitions

    This paper investigates design collaboration with reference to convergent and divergent idea generation processes in architectural design teams entering a design competition. Study of design teams offer a unique opportunity to investigate how creativity is fostered through collaborative work. While views of creativity often relate creativity to individual originality, collaboration requires different designers to work together towards one common design idea and consider as many different ideas as possible. In collaborative design, it would be easier to offer a variety of ideas but equally difficult to establish a consensus on a single idea. To investigate the role of convergent and divergent thinking in the design process, we interviewed three groups of architecture students who participated in competitions as a team. Interviews were analysed thematically to investigate how the teams overcame spatial, temporal, conceptual, and technological barriers. We conclude that the barriers and roles of members in design collaboration interact with convergent and divergent concept generation

    The Impact of Social Software in Product Design Higher Education

    It is difficult to ignore the impact that Web 2.0 and the subsequent social software revolution has had on society in general, and young people in particular. Information is exchanged and interpreted extremely quickly and in ways that were not imagined 10 years ago. Universities are struggling to keep up with this new technology, with outdated intranet systems and limited research into its application within the higher education sector. The aim of this paper is to firstly develop a greater understanding of the use of social software by students in product design education and the impact of blogs, wiki’s, Facebook groups, Flickr images, Myspace pages, RSS feeds, Tweets and YouTube video posts on their learning processes. The research for the project involved a number of discrete methods over a four year period, initially involving a review of the technological platforms and the e-learning software available to product design academic staff and students and the effect this has had thus far on teaching practices. Product design academic staff were then asked to rank existing platforms against a number of criteria. This was followed by the examination of case studies of successful applications of social software within the writer’s institution with a view to establishing if these technologies could be better integrated into higher education and current pedagogic practices in order to provide an enhanced learning experience for the student product designer. The first phase of the research culminated in a literature review to establish the state of play in the wider academic community and beyond. This preliminary research fed into action research which consisted of the formulation and design of a blog and information website for the institutions product design programmes. Semi-structured interviews were then conducted to establish the views and opinions of the blog from key stakeholders including university marketing directors, academics and the student cohort. Questionnaires followed so that qualitative and quantitative data could be analysed. The paper concludes with a description of the perceived validity and possible future developments for the blog and social software as a whole in the product design higher education sector

    An investigation into the use of cognitive ability tests in the identification of gifted students in design and technology

    This study examines whether MidYIS and YELLIS cognitive ability tests (CATs) are appropriate methods for the identification of giftedness in Design and Technology. A key rationale for the study was whether CATs are able to identify those students with the aptitudes considered of importance to identifying giftedness in Design and Technology and their use in connection with target setting. A review of the literature on CATs in relation to giftedness reveals support for their use in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) fields. A review of the general literature on giftedness suggests methods other than CATs should be used for identification purposes in D&T. The study recommends greater use of Design and Technology specific assessments for the identification of giftedness and target setting. Consideration is given to the use of creativity and the nonverbal element of CATs as alternative methods of identification

    Teaching of Cultural Concepts in Botswana Junior Secondary Schools Design and Technology Curriculum

    This research explored the extent to which cultural concepts stipulated in Botswana Design and Technology curriculum are taught by teachers at junior secondary schools, a topic on which there is little previous research. The pinnacle of good product innovation is when it is grounded on sensitive cultural analysis of the society’s culture. However, it has been observed that teachers have not yet been able to encode cultural concepts in teaching Design and Technology. A qualitative case study was conducted to assess the extent to which teachers teach and examine cultural concepts in Design and Technology. This data was analysed using the qualitative method of textual content analysis. The findings show that teachers do not teach this cultural component due to lack of relevant reference materials and other resources. The study concludes by proposing strategies that could be used to teach cultural concepts in the Design and Technology curriculum at secondary school level
